Crime65 Motorcycles Stolen In Sokoto Market Fire By Thieves Disguised As Rescuers by ManirBK(op): 12:58pm On Mar 20, 2024
The Chairman of Sokoto State Motorcycles Marketers Association, Garba Muhammed, on Tuesday said 65 motorcycles were unaccounted for after fire gutted part of the Sokoto central market on Monday.

Daily Trust reported that the fire which was said to have emanated from a refuse dump site gutted a section of the market where motorcycles and bicycles were sold .

Speaking during a condolence visit by Governor Ahmed Aliyu few hours after the inferno, Muhammed said 21 stores and 41 permanent shops were destroyed by the fire which started around 4 am.

He added that 110 temporary shops were razed down by the outbreak.

The chairman further stated that they lost 65 motorcycles and 10 new engines to thieves who disguised as rescuers.

He appealed to the state government to provide financial assistance to the victims, saying some of them have lost all their goods

Responding, Governor Ahmed Aliyu said a committee would soon be constituted to ascertain the remote cause of the fire and the level of damage it has caused.

“I assure you the government would do something within its limited resources,” he said.

The governor, however, directed the management and the market communities to evacuate the refuge that caused the fire within three weeks or risk its closure.

Politics72hrs After: Niger Republic Maintained Their Borders Entry Points Closed. by ManirBK(op): 9:49am On Mar 16, 2024
Days after the reopening of the Nigeria-Niger Republic
land and air borders by the Federal Government of
Nigeria, Nigerien authorities have not said anything, even
as they maintained their entry points closed.
Nigeria announced the reopening of its borders with Niger
Republic on March 13, 2024.
While security operatives like the Nigeria Customs Service
(NCS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have
eased movement along border communities, their
counterparts across the borders have remained adamant.
This is as residents of border communities, especially on
the Nigerian side, on Thursday expressed optimism that
with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to
reopen the borders with Niger Republic, life would be easier
for them and their neighbours, especially in terms of
trading.
President Tinubu’s directive was in line with the decision of
the Economic Community of West African States
(ECOWAS’) Authority of Heads of State and Government at
its Extraordinary Summit on February 24, 2024 in Abuja.
The Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Kemi
Nandap, had in a follow-up to what Tinubu said, directed
that restrictions on movement at Nigeria-Niger borders be
lifted.
Nandap gave the directive through a statement signed by
the acting Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Kenneth Kure
on Thursday in Abuja.
She directed all comptrollers stationed at states and border
commands along the Nigeria-Niger Republic border to
comply promptly and lift all restrictions on human
movement.
The border closure was part of sanctions to restore
democratic order after the military intervention in Niger that
ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
The two countries heavily relied on each for economic and
social activities, among others.
The Niger–Nigeria border is 1,608 kilometres, stretching
from Sokoto through Kebbi, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe and
Borno states.
After the reopening of the land borders, our correspondents
in the affected states monitored the situation around the
boundary areas. Their investigations revealed that on the
Nigerian side the borders have been reopened in majority
of the areas, but it is a different story on the Nigerien side.
Residents who spoke with our correspondents said if the
two neighbouring countries reached a common ground, it
would be mutually beneficial as it would revive economic
activities in the border communities.

Long way to go in Katsina

In Katsina State, residents of the border town of Kongolam,
which is less than 20 kilometres from Daura, said security
forces on the Niger Republic side blocked their own part.
Lawan Secretary, who spoke to our correspondent said,
“Shortly after we spoke with you about the border
reopening on the Nigerian side, the Nigerien police brought
three of their operational vehicles and blocked the pathway,
using stones and sand.
“They told our people who were about to cross that they
should go back as the border had not been reopened on
their side,” he said.
Secretary, who said he was not happy with the
development, added that whatever the situation was, there
was the need for understanding between Nigeria and Niger.
“Just remember that it is not only about business
transactions, we have marital ties with the people of Niger.
“Also, remember that our people have been importing and
exporting certain commodities with extreme difficulty
through illegal entry points, spending a lot of money to find
their way.
“That alone has helped in raising the cost of commodities
because whatever you spent along the way must be
reflected in the selling price,” he said.
Corroborating the earlier response, Alhaji Lawal Planner
Kongolam, said the road that leads to Niger Republic was
blocked by the Nigerien police, cutting short the happiness
of affected persons on both sides.
He said the items mostly traded across the borders in their
axis included dates, soap and other confectionary products,
as well as grains and cattle. He added that with the high
rate of foreign exchange with regard to the CFA, cattle had
become more expensive.
He, however, expressed confidence that if there would be
mutual understanding between the Nigerian and the
Nigerien authorities, there would be gradual return of
trading activities; and hopefully, the exchange rate of the
CFA would come down.
At Jibia town, also in Katsina State, residents were in a
joyous mood, saying their lifeline would soon be restored.
Al-Mustapha Danye said many people were forced out of
business as they had eaten up their capital, but with the
latest development, there was hope for a new life.
“Our markets used to be frequented by traders from
neighbouring communities from Niger Republic. On our
part, we used to import farm produce, such as tiger nuts,
dates and beans.
“We also have other commodities that pass through Niger
on transit from Cotonou. We believe that if normalcy
returns, prices of these commodities would crash and life
would be easier for us,” he said.
Haidar Lamama, a trader and resident of Magama in Jibia,
said the border there had been opened by both Customs
and Immigration officers on the Nigerian side.
He expressed optimism that prices of all commodities
would fall and life would become easier for the people of
the area and the country in general.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Nigeria Customs
Service, Katsina Area Command, T. Y Balarabe, said the
border in Jibia was reopened following the president’s
directive.

Niger border at Maigatari still closed

Our correspondent reports that the Maigatari border in
Jigawa State was reopened on Thursday at exactly 6am,
according to high-ranking security officials in charge of the
area. However, the Niger Republic’s security operatives
have kept theirs closed.
“They have refused to open theirs, but they are not asking
anybody not to cross over into their land by foot.
“All items that are legally allowed will now be transported
through the border following the right channels. But items
that are banned remain banned. Things like beans, if you
pay duty you would be allowed to bring it into Nigeria,” one
of the officials who did not want his name mentioned
because he was not authorised to speak said.
On their part, residents of Maigatari and environs have
expressed hope that once the borders on both sides are
fully opened, the development would yield positive results.
Speaking on behalf of the community, the representative of
the district head of Maigatari, Yakubu Aminu Wakili said,
“We thank God that the border has been opened, and as
directed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, all seized
items have been returned to us.
“We now move freely but without cars. But from Niger
Republic side, they are yet to open their border. It is still
manned by security operatives.
“We cannot say anything on the reason they are yet to
reopen the borders because we also just opened ours. But
we are hopeful that they would reopen theirs.
“For business activities, we are still where we were since
the border was closed. The changes are still minimal but
we are optimistic that everything will come back to flourish
like before.”

Nigeria/Niger borders in Kebbi still shut

Similarly, despite the presidential directive that the borders
between Nigeria and Niger Republic be reopened, the
international borders in Kebbi State are still shut on both
sides as at Thursday, March 14, 2024, which was 24 hours
after the directive by President Tinubu.
Daily Trust Saturday reports that the borders at Kamba,
Kangiwa and Bachaka in the state were yet to be opened
despite the directive.
A resident of Kamba, Musa Hussein, told our correspondent
that the border was still shut and its environs isolated for
months.
He said, “They are yet to open the borders. I was there this
afternoon. What the Customs at the border told us was that
they were yet to receive a memo to open the borders.”
Our sources at Customs and Immigration commands in
Kebbi State said some top officers of the two services
were summoned to Abuja for further briefing on the border
issue.

Sokoto’s Illela border communities laud FG

Residents of Illela town in Sokoto State have expressed
happiness over the reopening of the Nigeria-Niger borders,
recounting that life was unbearable while the sanctions
lasted.
Daily Trust Saturday reports that majority of the residents of
border communities were into one form of cross-border
trade or another before the closure.
A community leader, Alhaji Musa Sarkin Alaru, said the
announcement of the reopening brought relief to many
residents.
Recounting their ordeal after the closure, he said 70 per
cent of their youths were rendered jobless and had left to
other places for greener pastures.
“But I am sure they will all come back now that the border
is reopened and continue with their trans-border trades,” he
said.
The chairman of the Marketers Association in Sokoto State,
Chika Sarkin Gishiri, also expressed optimism that the
border reopening would lead to crash in prices of some
imported commodities in the country, saying there were
many goods meant for Nigeria, which could not come into
the country because of the closure.
But one of the livestock traders in the state, Murtala Arkilla,
wondered if the reopening could lead to crash in the prices
of livestock.
Sokoto receives most of its livestock from the neighbouring
Niger Republic.
A security agent at the border post, who spoke on the
condition of anonymity, said all the security agencies there
had complied with the directive of the federal government.
“The border is now open for human and vehicular
movement,” he said.
During the official reopening, the area comptroller in charge
of Sokoto and Zamfara command, Kamal Muhammed,
charged security agencies at the border station to
collaborate with one another in the area of trade facilitation,
information and intelligence sharing for safe, efficient and
effective service delivery at the border.
He further commended Customs licenced agents and the
Illela community for their patience and cooperation during
the seven-month border closure.
Border reopening won’t change anything – Borno, Yobe
traders
In Yobe State, Adamu Kanamma, a trader who crosses to
Niger through Maino-Sorroa border in Yunusari Local
Government Area, said reopening the border would not
change anything.
“We maintained the good relationship we had with the
people of Niger even after the border closure, but a lot of
things happened within that period.
“To say that the price of food items coming into Nigeria
from Niger will drop is not possible unless the value of CFA
franc crashes to N1,500 or less because, as at yesterday
(March 13, 2024), it was N2, 570 equivalent.
“We are now buying a bag of foreign rice at N73,000 from
Niger, so how much can we sell it in the Nigerian market?”
he asked.
Another transporter from Machina town, also in Yobe, said
the number of people passing through the border had not
increased yet.
“It is like Nigeriens have become used to the sanctions,
they no longer come into Nigeria like before. It is our
traders that are taking the goods to them. Also, we face a
lot of strictness in dealing with authorities in Diffa, Maino-
Sorroa and Maradi, all in Niger,” he said.
A fish trader, Labbo Mustapha, said Nigeriens were
demanding taxes from Nigerians more than before.
“You will not sell fish in their country, and you must pay tax
for passing through their country from the Lake Chad.
“One of the disturbing situations is that they don’t collect
naira and will not give you CFA franc. But they will pay on
whatever transaction you do with naira. They have
succeeded in making their currency a scarce commodity,”
he said.

As Muslims observe the Ramadan (fasting) period, the Kebbi State Government has opened 69 feeding centres across the 21 Local Government Areas.

Special Adviser to Governor Nasir Idris on Religious Affairs, Malam Imran Usman-Abdur-Rahman, made this known during a briefing in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.
He said, “Governor Idris has authorised that three feeding centres for Ramadan breakfast be opened in each of the 21 local government areas of the state, beginning from the first day of the Ramadan, to assist people.”

Usman-Abdur-Rahman said the governor also released funds for
complete renovation of Sheik Abbas Jega Jumu’at Mosque at Rafin Atiku, Birnin Kebbi, including internal furnishing and installation of security lights.
“The governor had wanted the work to begin immediately, but the Iman of the Mosque suggested that the action be deferred until after Eid-el- fitir, because of the ongoing Ramadan Tafsir,” he said.

PoliticsBREAKING: Tinubu Directs States To Implement Wage Award by ManirBK(op): 9:28am On Mar 14, 2024
P resident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to state governors
to start paying the wage awards pending the determination of
the new minimum wage to reduce the hardship of the
economy on the people.
The president implied that if the states had implemented the wage
awards, it would provide much-needed relief without causing
inflationary pressures.
Speaking in Minna at the flag-off of the agricultural mechanization
revolution for food security and the commissioning of the remodeled
domestic terminal of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in
Minna, the President stated that all states need to adopt the wage
award saying that the National Executive Council would also adopt it.
He said: “If all of you, the sub-nationals have been paying the wages
award, pending the determination of the new salary wage. Let all the
states start paying the wages award. Whatever they are taking now
plus the wage award would relieve the public.
“Please, I am not giving an order, I am appealing to you states, start
paying the wages awards, let everyone start paying it. It is a relief to
the people. The mechanism is the fact that it won’t be inflationary if
we announce the new salary wage in a few weeks or months, they
would have gotten used to the basic wages of N30,000 plus the
wages award, and it will have a dampening effect on the market.
Please get sub-nationals together and NEC should adopt this.”
The President assured that the student loans and other economic
measures would soon commence as steps are being taken by the
government to relieve the people of hunger.
“The student loan programme will commence, there will be
unemployment benefits for our graduates, and the social security
programme for the elderly and vulnerable will commence, we are
fine-tuning all these areas. We will relieve people of hunger.”
Tinubu also outlined plans for a comprehensive programme to
address the challenges of violent attacks, cattle rustling, and other
related issues pledging to organize an inauguration of the Livestock
Change programme in Nigeria within the next few weeks, aiming to
transform the current challenges into economic opportunities.
“Give me two to three weeks. You will be part of the inauguration of
the livestock change in Nigeria. I know what it means to economic
sabotage for roaming cows to eat up the crops and vegetation of our
lands, it could be painful but when we reorient the herders and make
provision for cattle rearing. The Governors should provide the lands
and as the President, I am committed to giving you a comprehensive
programme that will solve this problem.”

Politics10 States Paying Wage Award To Workers by ManirBK(op): 9:20am On Mar 14, 2024
*Ogun gives students, pupils, N50,000, N10,000

Not less than ten states are paying wage award to their workers, findings by The Nation have shown.

Lagos, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Adamawa and Jigawa are part of the 15 states surveyed by our correspondents yesterday.

Niger State yesterday approved payment of N20,000 each to its workers.

Following the withdrawal of petrol subsidy and the attendant pains, the Federal Government among other cushioning policies, began payment of N35,000 wage award to its workers. It has paid for five months.

On Monday, the President admonished governors, who had yet to pay the wage award to start, pending the conclusion of work by the Tripartite Committee on New Minimum Wage.

He made the appeal while inaugurating agricultural programmes initiated by Governor Umaru Bago in Minna, Niger State.

Since the removal of petrol subsidy, federal revenue has grown significantly. Last month, all the federating units shared over N1trillion.

Bago announced yesterday that workers in his state would from this month get N20,000 as wage award.

His Ogun counterpart, Dapo Abiodun, whose administration has been paying N10,000 monthly award to civil servants, added primary and secondary school pupils to the list.

About 100,000 indigent pupils are to receive N10,000 each from the government.

Payment of N50,000 to 20,000 students who are indigenes of the state in tertiary institutions will be completed this week.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, who announced the plan in Abeokuta, said it was one of the strategies by Governor Abiodun to provide succour to parents in the face of biting economic challenges.

He said: “Given the economic realities in the country, the governor decided to provide succour to the people of the state using a multiplicity of approaches to achieve this.

“He believes that a strategy never used by any government is the health and education sectors. Through the education sector, you can truly reach out to those who need the palliative.

We have over 2, 000 primary and secondary schools in all the four divisions of the state, and 100,000 learners in these schools would receive N10,00 each.

“As we meet and give the parents the governor’s message, they are receiving the alert for payment.

“The governor’s gesture is to support the parents in meeting their children’s needs.

In the tertiary level, we are giving out N50,000 to each student. We have captured 50,000 students from all the tertiary institutions whose details have been submitted to us after we wrote to their vice-chancellors, rectors and provosts.

We are paying directly to the students to ensure that the money get to them.

We started payment last week, and we have paid over 10,000 students, and before the end of this week, we will have paid 20,000.”

Lagos and Ondo states pay the highest wage award of N35,000 to their workers while Oyo and Enugu are second with N25,000.

Ekiti and Osun pay N15,000 while Jigawa, Adamawa and Ebonyi pay N10,000.

Some of the states have also extended the payment to local government employees and pensioners.

The Federal Government is reviewing the offer of foreign assistance in the battle against kidnapping and other high-profile crimes.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the United States and other countries, which he did not name, have offered to assist Nigeria.

He spoke with reporters at the State House, Abuja, after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the minister, the President reiterated his directive that security agencies must ensure the safe return of all kidnap victims.

Incidences of kidnapping, especially in the North, spiked in the last few weeks.

Last Thursday, 287 pupils were abducted from the Local Education Authority (LEA) primary school in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna.

No fewer than 61 people were abducted by suspected terrorists who attacked the Buda community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna on Monday.

Also, bandits in Sokoto kidnapped 16 Qur’anic students.

In Borno, some women were reportedly kidnapped from their Internally Displaced Peoples (IDP) camp.

The incident remains controversial as there is no official confirmation.

Many Nigerians have been calling on the government to seek external support, if necessary, to end the rising insecurity, especially the mass abduction of pupils.

It was the first time the government would inform Nigerians that some foreign countries had offered to assist.

According to Idris, President Tinubu was emphatic that no ransom would be paid.

On foreign assistance, the minister said: “We’re aware that it is not just the U.S. that has offered to help.

“Other countries have also offered to support Nigeria.

“But what we can tell you is that the government is still reviewing these offers and the position of government will be made known.”.

According to the minister, security agencies are working to rescue those abducted as soon as possible.

He said: “Mr. President reiterated his directive to security agencies and the Ministry of Defense to ensure that our kids are brought back to their homes safely.

“The security agencies are working around the clock.

“These children and people that have been abducted by criminal elements will be brought back to safety pretty soon.

“Mr. President has also directed that no ransom will be paid by the government to any of these criminal elements.

“So it’s important to underscore that the government is not paying anybody any dime.

“The government is optimistic that these children and other people that have been abducted will be brought back to their families in safety.”

RIYADH: Monday will mark the first day of Ramadan
in Saudi Arabia, the Supreme Court announced on
Sunday evening.
The crescent moon was sighted on Sunday evening in
Sudair and Al-Hariq.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar
during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset,
abstaining from food and drink.
The holy month is a period of introspection and
community, when Muslims read the Qur’an more than
usual, perform taraweeh prayers, and increase their
good deeds including charitable giving.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to inaugurate an
agricultural processing zone with equipment and the
remodelled Minna International Airport on Monday.
Governor Mohammed Umaru-Bago of Niger State, who said
this while inspecting the projects on Saturday, said about
2,000 hectares would be utilised for the agro-processing
zone project.
Also on the inspection team was the President of the
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo.
Bago said about 1,000 hectares would be utilised for drip
irrigation and greenhouses while an additional 1,000
hectares was specifically for processing dairy products.

He added that the remodelling of the International Airport in
Minna had reached 99 per cent completion.
“Niger State sells an average of half a million cattle to
Nigerians and people outside Nigeria daily.
“We don’t need to transport these cattle by road at all, you
can take the meat that is frozen from the airport to
anywhere and it will create employment, enhance the value
chain,” the governor added.
On the agro zone, the governor, who said the project would
be executed with foreign partners, said water would be
piped from Shiroro Dam for use by farmers at the site.
“We are constructing about 140 kilometres of water
irrigation channels to this place from Shiroro dam,” he said.
The NUJ president commended the governor for the
initiative, adding that the airport would compete with others
in Africa.
“Coming here today to see the massive transformation that
is ongoing in this place speaks volumes about the
commitment of the present administration in the state,” he
said. (NAN)

Politics2024: Northern Senators Allege N3trn Budget Padding by ManirBK(op): 3:07pm On Mar 10, 2024
The chairman of the forum, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), disclosed this during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service yesterday. He alleged that what the Senate debated and passed as budget for 2024 was N25 trillion and not the N28 trillion being implemented by Tinubu. Ningi said the forum would probe the “added sum of N3 trillion” and other inclusions in the budget that were not known to the Senate.
He also stated that there was another budget that was “done underground” which he said the lawmakers did not know. He said the forum had engaged consultants, for the past three months, to review the budget and work on it line by line. Ningi said the forum had seen in the budget, “the huge damage” done to the North and the entire country. President Tinubu had presented N27.5 trillion budget proposal to a joint session of the National Assembly on November 29, 2023. The Senate had passed N28,777,404,073,861 budget after increasing it by N1.2 trillion. Ningi also alleged that the Senate was not aware of the N3 trillion which was he said added to N25 trillion. He also said that the Northern Senators’ Forum would come up with a report and engage Senate President Godswill Akpabio and President Tinubu on the matter. Ningi said: “This is true. For the past three months, we have engaged consultants to review the budget for us. We have some experts that are working on it line by line. “We have seen the huge damage that was done not only to the North, but the entire country in that budget. We are supposed to sit with the Senate president to inform him about what we have observed. “We want to show him what we have seen in the budget that is not acceptable. We will not accept them and we don’t want the country to continue spending money on those things. “Apart from what the National Assembly did on the floor, there was another budget that was done underground which we didn’t know. “The new things we have discovered in the budget were not known to us. We haven’t seen them in the budget that was debated and considered on the floor of the National Assembly. “For example, it was said that there was a budget of N28 trillion, but what was passed was N25 trillion. So, there is N3 trillion on top. Where are they? Where is it going? So, we need to know this. There are a lot of things. We are coming up with a report and we will show the president himself and ask him if he is aware or not. This is what we intended to do. We are to meet the president,” he said. Ningi said the forum would also talk to Tinubu about the Mambilla Power Project, Ajaokuta Steel Company and the River Niger dredging. “We will talk to him about the Niger Republic. Recently, they said they would construct a dam, this is not good for us,” Ningi added. He also said Tinubu’s administration was not living up to the expectations of the North. He said, “The most painful thing is that northerners stood for him and did all they could to bring him to power, but unfortunately, there was no agreement between them and the president on what should be done to the North and the northerners. “Especially taking into consideration the importance and significant projects that the North has been yearning and aspiring to get for a long time. For example, the Ajaokuta project, the Mambilla power project, the dredging of river Niger and other notable projects. “What mostly disturbs my sleep is that we had a budget in 2013 and 2014 in which we earmarked billions of Naira, but it was neglected by President Goodluck Jonathan. When President Buhari came, we thought it was one of the projects he would pay attention to, but unfortunately, it wasn’t possible for over eight years.” No infractions–Senate spokesman Reacting, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, in a chat with our correspondent last night, dismissed the allegations by Ningi. He said: “The National budget is a public document which expressly states the expected revenue and the expenditure of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Senate, under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio, is not aware of any varied execution of the 2024 appropriation mandate, as approved. “The budget presentation and approval processes were made in the public glare, while the presidential assent was also in a public ceremony. Any infractions would have been brought before the Senate, if any. “The general public should be at rest assured that there is no budget padding anywhere and we are confident that the 2024 appropriation law shall be strictly executed under strict legislative oversight.”
