The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a stern warning to loan app companies and telemarketers over their unauthorised usage of telecoms subscribers’ phone numbers for commercial activities. The commission, in a public notice released on Thursday, said anyone caught in the act would be arrested and prosecuted. The telecom regulator considers the use of people’s phone numbers without the subscribers’ express consent to be a violation of privacy. It continued by stating that the telemarketers’ claims that they obtained the numbers from the NCC and the national database of registered SIMs were bogus. The commission, however, urged telecom customers to use the Do-Not-Disturb (DND) Short Code, which was issued by the NCC to manage their subscription to Value Added Services and to opt out of unsolicited text messages and other telemarketing pitches. To do this, send the word “STOP” to the short code 2442 for FULL DND. Additionally, it advised telecom customers who witness such unlawful telemarketing practices to report such incidents to the commission by calling the NCC Toll-Free Number 622 so that the appropriate enforcement measures can be taken. The notice reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has been drawn to the criminal activities of telemarketers who illegally access the telephone numbers of telecom subscribers for their commercial activities and gains. “These telemarketers also falsely claim that they obtain telecom consumers’ phone numbers from the Nigerian Communications Commission. Otherwise, they claim that the Commission gave them access to the numbers through the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration Database. These claims are not true. “The Commission fully abides by the principles and rules guiding the protection of privacy as a right of all consumers and users of telecommunications services. “Therefore, no service provider or telemarketer is authorized to invade, harvest, or use subscriber data in any form or guise without the express approval of the consumer, except otherwise provided by law. “The protection of the data of telecom subscribers by the Commission is guaranteed in Section 35 (1) of the Consumer Code of Practice Regulations, 2007; Section 9 (1) of the Nigerian Communications (Registration of Communications Subscribers) Regulations, 2022; and Section 4.2 (a) &< (b) of the NCC’s Internet Code of Practice. “Therefore, any telemarketer involved in harvesting telecom subscribers’ phone numbers and other personal details through dishonest means and using such for commercial purposes without regulatory approval is hereby strongly warned to desist from this illegal act, as anyone found guilty shall be arrested and prosecuted in keeping with the law.” https://leadership.ng/ncc-bans-loan-app-from-illegal-use-of-telecoms-subscribers-phone-numbers/ mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun nlfpmod FOD dominique puskin naijacutee |

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, commended Indian investors for significant investment pledges amounting to nearly $14 billion US dollars. The commitment was made during the Nigeria-India Presidential Roundtable and Conference in New Delhi, India. “We are ready to give you the best returns for investment possible, there’s nowhere else like our country. Nigeria offers the best returns for investment today, so invest now,” he said. A statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), informed that Indorama Petrochemical Limited pledged a new investment of $8 billion in the expansion of its fertilizer production and petrochemical facility in Eleme, Rivers. It said Jindal Steel and Power Limited, one of India’s largest private steel producers, has committed to investing $3 billion in Nigeria, following discussions with President Tinubu on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in New Delhi, India. The statement added: “Founding President of SkipperSeil Limited, Mr. Jitender Sachdeva announced that, following President Bola Tinubu’s personal intervention, he is investing $1.6 billion U.S. dollars in the establishment of twenty 100MW power generation plants across the states of Northern Nigeria, amounting to 2,000MW of new power within the next four years. “Additionally, the President has approved finalization on a new $1 billion U.S. dollar agreement to bring the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to 40% self-sufficiency in local manufacturing and production of defense equipment in-country by 2027 through a comprehensive new partnership with the Managing Arm of the Military-Industrial Complex of the Indian Government. “Another Indian firm, Bharti Enterprises, which is a major first- generation corporation in India with interests in telecom, space communications, digital solutions, insurance, processed foods, real estate, and hospitality, has expressed its commitment to invest an additional $700 million in Nigeria, with work set to begin immediately. “Emphasising that under his pragmatic leadership, agreements must now manifest in industries and jobs on the ground in Nigeria, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to all Indian companies and individuals who have responded positively to his administration’s efforts to improve Nigeria’s macroeconomic and investment climate.” According to the statement, Tinubu urged investors not to delay, assuring that all observed impediments will be resolved. “Do not procrastinate. Don’t be frightened about investments in Nigeria. Bring it on. Ask your questions and make your requests. The trade and investment opportunities are enormous. I have a team, and I am the captain of that team, and I assure you that we solve problems,” the President affirmed. The statement added that the president informed prospective investors that in Nigeria, there is no free lunch or shortcuts, but that he has “good economic policy for the investors as well as able men and women in leadership and on the ground, who can drive the goal of broad prosperity through investment and infrastructure.” Tinubu stated: “I will captain and lead the course of investment, development, and prosperity for the largest democracy in Africa and for investors from the rest of the world.” He reiterated that Nigeria is open for business with intelligent, innovative, capable, and highly committed individuals in government, who are ready to drive the largest economy in Africa to destiny. The President also told the Summit that “he is proud” that the Nigerian stock market had broken records in its consistent bullishness since he assumed office. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who addressed the roundtable themed, “Building Partnerships with Renewed Hope for a Diversified and Prosperous Economy,” thanking Mr. Naveen Jindau, Chairman of Jindal Steel and Power Limited, for the new $3 billion investment in iron ore processing and steel development in Nigeria. Commending the Tata group and so many others who have immediately responded to President Tinubu’s moves to correct the major systemic faults in the macro-economic and investment climate in Nigeria, the Finance Minister noted, “I also wish to thank Mr Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, for his continued commitment to invest in the first phase at least $700 million dollars more in Nigeria,” Mr. Edun said. Edun further used the opportunity to explain the underlying principles of President Tinubu’s eight-point strategy, emphasizing that his agenda aims to promote growth and job creation, poverty reduction, food security, improved access to capital, inclusivity, business and citizen security, and fair play on a foundation of rule of law and anti-corruption. Speaking on behalf of investors, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal told the President, “You have unified the FX market. You have freed up crucial capital to upgrade your public infrastructure. Now, you have just dropped your prepared remarks and have spoken from your heart. Our investors have heard from a leader who is doing everything possible to attract capital to Nigeria for the benefit of Nigerians and our companies. Mr. President, we will bring these investments to Nigeria, and with your inspiring leadership style, we can only do more and more.” Also, at the event, Nigeria’s Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, and his counterpart from India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Co-operation in the field of Sharing Successful Digital Solutions, to be implemented at total population scale for digital transformation. The Minister also signed an MoU with Central Square Foundation for Co-operation in the field of Sharing Successful Ecosystems, which involve interventions relating to education technology, to be implemented at population scale for digital economic transformation. A third MoU on Infrastructure Development was signed between the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria Limited (InfraCorp) and Invest India, the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency of India, which helps investors looking for investment opportunities and options in India. Nigeria’s Industry, Trade and Investment Minister, Dr. Doris Uzoka- Anite, supervised it. Closing the interactive session, Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee, the Director-General of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), noted that the Presidential Roundtable serves as a robust foundation for Indian businesses looking to engage with Nigeria and would encompass cooperation across key areas, such as capacity building, skills development, agriculture, and the enhancement of digital and physical infrastructure, among others. “Under the determined leadership of President Tinubu, the CII is prepared to dispatch a high-level delegation to Nigeria, and we are keen on establishing a second presence in Africa, with Nigeria as our target destination,” he concluded. The Presidential roundtable, attended by President Tinubu, also had in attendance Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy; and Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment; along with industry leaders from both India and Nigeria. Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi, on Tuesday ordered the immediate payment of annual leave grants to all categories of workers in the state. He gave the order while receiving the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Kebbi chapter, who paid him a courtesy visit at Government House in Birnin Kebbi. Signing the order in the presence of the union leaders, the governor instructed that payment should commence on Wednesday, insisting that all categories of workers from State, Local Governments and LGEAs must be paid a uniform of 10 per cent of their annual pay. Idris lamented that as an insider, he knew that previous administrations used to pay seven to eight per cent to some categories of workers while only few got 10 per cent. On palliatives, he admitted, “nobody could deny the fact that people are hungry,” saying that he iis a member of the presidential committee which had already rolled out modalities on how to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal. The governor said that he had so far received N2 billion from the N5 billion promised by the Federal Government. Idris promised that the state government and its 21 Local Government Councils would add between N3.5 and N4 billion to buy grains for onward distribution to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal. He assured the unions that NLC would be given its fair share separately for onward distribution to its members, advising: “I don’t want you to assume but believe that this is your government.” Idris reminded them that the present administration had already started projects that have direct bearing to the lives of the common people, adding, “works to give the state capital a befitting outlook just like any other state capital in the country are on course.” https://guardian.ng/news/kebbi-gov-idris-orders-immediate-payment-of-leave-grants-to-workers/ mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun nlfpmod |
The most performing Governor so far God bless you Zulum |
To cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, Governor Babagana
Umara Zulum, on Tuesday, presented a cheque of N2bn to the
Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Borno State for disbursement of
interest-free loans to eligible workers with repayment period of 24
months.
The presentation took place after a meeting between the governor
and officials of the NLC led by its chairman in the State, Comrade
Yusuf Inuwa.
The meeting took place at the council chambers of the Government
House in Maiduguri, the state capital.
Zulum asked the NLC to finalise talks with state’s Ministry of
Finance to determine category of workers to be entitled to the
loans as well as the loan recovery modalities through monthly
deductions of not more than one-third of salaries.
The governor also announced 100% increase in monthly releases
for the payment of backlog of gratuities.
The payment was increased from N100million monthly, which
equals N1.2billion annually to N200 million monthly, which will now
amount to N2.4billion.
The gratuities were lumped sums paid to workers who retire from
public service, even as they become entitled to monthly pensions.
For many years, retired workers in Borno State were owed gratuities
for which Governor Zulum has released about N20billion to
drastically reduce the backlog even though more workers retire
every year, making more of them to be owed gratuities.
Although many were owed gratuities, Governor Zulum has since
introduced a policy of automatic migration of retired workers from
salaries to pensions. Before the policy, it took retired workers
months to complete documentation before getting monthly pension
while they wait for gratuities, which takes longer waiting time.
Also, as part of the outcome of his meeting with the NLC, Governor
Zulum on Tuesday in Maiduguri announced the allocation of 30
buses to be dedicated to conveying workers in the metropolis at
subsidized fares.
The buses are to be managed by the Borno Express Transport
Corporation but to be deployed at pick-up points along major routes
to move workers to the Musa Usman State Secretariat in the
morning and return them by evening from the secretariat to where
they were picked up in the morning.
Still as part of the outcome of his meeting with the organised
labour, Governor Zulum has directed the state’s Ministry of Finance
to clear backlogs of promotional benefits owed workers whose
names were omitted during earlier payments.
The workers were those still being owed 2016, 2017 and 2018
promotional benefits after their names were omitted during
payments approved by Governor Zulum in 2019.
Zulum directed that workers owed 2019 and 2020 promotional
benefits should all be paid while those owed from 2021 to date
were to be paid based on the outcome of a recent promotional
examination which they participated in.
Before Governor Zulum’s pronouncemente, chairman of the NLC in
the State, Comrade Yusuf Inuwa, had tabled some demands, most
of which the governor approved.
The NLC chairman said the NLC demanded loans for workers who
may want to practise agricultural and other businesses or acquire
some assets.
He also said the NLC demanded allocation of buses and clearing of
promotional benefits.
Inuwa also said the organised labour demanded increase in the
monthly allocation for payment of pensions.
The NLC chairman later thanked Governor Zulum for meeting most
of their demands, hoping that the labour will continue to engage the
government for more demands to be addressed for the welfare of
workers at the state and local government levels. https://leadership.ng/subsidy-zulum-approves-n2bn-loan-to-borno-workers/ mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun nlfpmod |
