PoliticsCOUP: Nigeria Cuts Power Supply To Niger Republic by ManirBK(op): 5:41pm On Aug 03, 2023
Nigeria has disconnected the supply of 150 megawatts, MW of electricity
daily to Niger as part of efforts by the Economic Community of West
African States, ECOWAS, to restore democracy in that nation.
The disconnection was effected by the Transmission Company of
Nigeria, TCN, directly involved in the transmission of power on Tuesday
night.
The managing director/CEO of TCN, Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, did not
respond when Vanguard called repeatedly, yesterday.
But a source in the organisation, who pleaded anonymity, said: “It is true
Niger was disconnected from the national grid last night based on the
instruction of the government. Nigeria used to supply 150 megawatts,
MW of power to Niger.
“It is total disconnection in line with ECOWAS moves to restore
democracy in that country.”
Military intervention in Niger ‘last resort’, says Defence Chiefs.
Meanwhile, Military chiefs from the ECOWAS regional bloc on Wednesday
said a military intervention in junta-ruled Niger was “the last resort”.
“(The) military option is the very last option on the table, the last resort,
but we have to prepare for the eventuality,” said Abdel-Fatau Musah,
ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security.
An ECOWAS team headed by former Nigerian leader Abdulsalami
Abubakar was in Niger to “negotiate”, added Musah, speaking at the start
of a three-day meeting of the grouping’s military chiefs in the Nigerian
capital Abuja.
UK supports ECOWAS
UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, said yesterday his country was in
support of the position taken by the Economic Community of West
African States, ECOWAS, on the military coup in Niger Republic, which led
to the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum.

PoliticsWhy Former Emir Sanusi’s Portrait Was Reintroduced At Coronation Hall by ManirBK(op): 6:25pm On Aug 01, 2023
The government said the photo ought to have been there permanently.

Kano State government on Monday explained the reason for the reintroduction of a portrait of a former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, in Coronation Hall, domiciled in the Government House.

The clarification followed speculations that the new administration in the state was poised to dissolve the five emirates council controversially introduced by the immediate past administration of Abdullah Ganduje.

Mr Ganduje, in March 2020 dethroned Mr Sanusi as the sole emir of Kano and introduced five emirates in the state, he accused the Emir of insubordination and disrespect to constituted authority.

Subsequently, the portrait of Mr Sanusi who is the 14th Emir of Kano, was removed from Coronation Hall and was replaced with the portraits of the five serving emirs in the state.

The Kano governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, said Mr Sanusi was the first emir to be coronated and presented with a staff of office at the hall built by a former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, thus, his photo ought to have been there permanently.

“The history of the coronation hall is synonymous with the 14th emir of Kano Malam Muhammadu Sanusi because it was built for his presentation of staff of office after he was crowned as the emir succeeding late Alhaji Ado Bayero in 2014 during the administration of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

So traditionally, his picture shall remain there forever. Bringing back the picture of the 14th emir is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to give the Coronation hall a facelift”, Mr Bature said.

Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has directed the payment of N10,000 each to students of Kwara origin in public-owned tertiary institutions.

The governor also approved a stipend of N10,000 each for some categories of security agents defined as the first line of defence.

The chief press secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye announced this in a statement on Tuesday.

Ajakaye said that the monetary palliative would be disbursed through the Kwara State Social Investment Programme (KWASSIP) Office.

He added: “The approval for students’ support, described as one-off in its scope, is a departure from the previous bursary award, which covered only final year students of tertiary schools.

“The special support will be coordinated by a government committee to be headed by Prof. Shehu Raheem Adaramaja, chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB). He will be supported by officials from the Ministry of Tertiary Institution, bursary department, Ministry of Finance, and a representative each from the National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS) and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Kwara State.

“The committee will publish a web link through which all students eligible for state bursary would apply for the support within dates to be announced, filling required information and documents.”

Hulala. Royal Rumble 2023 Kanu vs Ekpa now. Who winshuh
CrimeIPOB Confirms Kanu’s Letter, Says Power-Drunk Simon Ekpa Shouldn't Torture Igbos by ManirBK(op):
The People of Biafra, IPOB, has
confirmed the authenticity of Nnamdi Kanu’s
handwritten note to Finland-based separatist
agitator, Simon Ekpa instructing him to end
his “infamous and reckless sit-at-home.”
IPOB in a statement by its Media and Publicity
Secretary, Emma Powerful on Saturday said
the last message in his handwriting was the last
straw and every Biafran must understand the
importance of the letter.
The statement reads: “The global family and
movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra
(IPOB) confirms the authenticity of the
handwritten note of our Leader penned to the
Finland infiltrator and crime minister instructing
him to end his infamous and reckless sit-at-homes.
“It is pertinent to make the message disassociating
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB from the senseless
enforcement of sit-at-home public to avoid
consequences on innocent citizens.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in his wisdom,
communicated the message to the infiltrators
through the right channel and a source they
should trust. The claims that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s
handwritten note is fake is part of their mischief
to continue in their contract to blackmail IPOB and
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with the violent enforcement
of the infamous sit-at-homes used to terrorise our
people.
“We understand that a power-drunk crime
Minister with his inconsequential kangaroo
defacto government in exile will ignore the order
for the fear of deflating his over-bloated ego.”
He explained that IPOB leadership initiated the
Monday sit-at-home in protest of the abduction
and rendition of their leader and to make sure
that the Nigeria government arraigned Mazi
Nnamdi Kanu openly, in a public court where they
could see him.
“But our leader instructed that it be suspended so
that we don’t torture our people.
“In line with the principle of command and
control, we obeyed, and the sit-at-home order was
suspended. However, infiltrators who don’t believe
in the principle of command and control, which is
a core value of IPOB, ignored the order from our
leader.”
He said Mazi Nnamdi Kanu had sent messages
through his visitors at the Department of State
Security (DSS) detention camp to the infiltrators to
stop the reckless sit-at-home several times, all to
no avail.
“Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe tabled this message in
the red chamber of the Senate, what Mazi Nnamdi
Kanu told them when they visited him in the DSS
custody with Ohaneze Ndigbo delegates in the DSS
headquarters Abuja, where he was illegally and
unconstitutionally detained in DSS solitary
confinement since June 2021.
“When our leader called for complete peace in
Biafraland and to protect our people instead of
killing them in one of his court appearances, he
was referring to the infiltrators to stop their
infamous enforcement of sit-at-home orders and
enforcement. That call went on deaf ears. This last
message in his handwriting is the last straw.”
He said every Biafran must understand the
importance of the letter.
“If you are a lover of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, you must
listen to him. Moreso, we must stop giving
credence to the enemy of Ndigbo and Biafrans
claiming to be Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple but
has gone ahead to make himself a Prime Minister
while his supposed leader is in solitary detention.
“Every Biafran must stop observing any sit-at-
home order from the infiltrators. The reckless
enforcement and abuse of sit-at-homes is an
opportunity for criminals to kidnap, murder,
maim, and snatch cars from innocent citizens.”

Foreign AffairsAU Gives Niger Military Junta 15 Days To Return Bouzam To Power by ManirBK(op): 7:06am On Jul 30, 2023
• Tinubu prepares to host ECOWAS emergency meeting

The African Union has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the junta in Niger to reinstall the country’s democratically elected government.

The ultimatum coincided with a meeting the coup leaders had with senior civil servants to discuss how they would run the country and as the U.S. and the European Union threatened sanctions against the regime.

Brig-Gen. Mohamed Toumba, one of the soldiers who ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on Wednesday, told state television that the junta met with civil servants on Friday and asked them to continue their work as usual, following the suspension of the constitution.

“The message given was not to stop the processes underway, to keep on with things,” said Brig. Gen. Toumba.

“Everything that must be done will be done,” he said, signaling the intention of the regime led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, who also goes by Omar, to remain in power.

After its meeting on Friday, the African Union Peace and Security Council said it was concerned by the “alarming resurgence” of coups that undermine democracy and stability on the continent.

It asked the soldiers to “return immediately and unconditionally to their barracks and restore constitutional authority within a maximum of fifteen (15) days.”

Bazoum, whose condition and that of his officials remains unknown since the government was overthrown, should also be released immediately and unconditionally, the AU said.

Failure to do so, it said, would compel the bloc to take “necessary action, including punitive measures against the perpetrators.”

On the streets of the Nigerien capital Niamey on Saturday, things appeared to be returning to normal, though many in the international community were still on lockdown with hotels full of foreigners, many given instructions not to leave.

Locals say they’re waiting to see what unfolds, with many still in support of Bazoum who has not yet resigned.

“I’m with him, he does a good work. (But) what can we do?” said Mohamed Cisse, a street seller. “This is (the new leader’s) time, Bazoum’s time is over,” he said.

Tchiani, the junta leader and commander of Niger’s presidential guard, is close to former Nigerien president Mahamadou Issoufou, who stepped down in 2021 after a decade in office.

Tchiani’s takeover of power will reinforce speculation that Issoufou is behind the coup, said Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel program at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a German think tank and consultancy.

President Bola Tinubu is billed to hold a special meeting of the authority of heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja today.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties Communication and Strategy, Mr Dele Alake, on Friday said the special meeting had been called to deliberate on the situation in Niger Republic.

President Tinubu is the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS Commission.

The governments of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe have started taking steps to contain the hike in transportation caused by removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the state governments, which operate own transport companies, have continued to ensure that their fares remain lower than what obtains in motor parks.

In Borno, Governor Babagana Zulum had approved the release of 50 buses to address the situation.

According to Mallam Isa Gusau, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, the buses will be added to the fleet of the state owned transport outfit, Borno Express Corporation.

Gusau said that 30 vans were also provided to provide farmers, particularly those residing inside Maiduguri, free ride to outskirts of the state capital where their farmlands are located.

A University of Maiduguri student, Mustapha Abdullahi, and a government worker, Ali Modu, who patronised government buses that were picking passengers at N50 per drop, lauded government for the intervention.

“I patronise Borno Express buses every day, paying N50 from Post Office to University of Maiduguri as against N150 being collected by taxis and tricycles,” Abdullahi said.

In Adamawa, the state government had constituted a special committee on mitigating the effects of subsidy removal with Dr Amos Edgar, the Chief of Staff to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, as chairman of the committee.

Edgar revealed plan by Adamawa Government to purchase shuttle buses for workers and inter-local government transportation at subsidised rate.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed shock over the coup d’etat that ousted ex-Niger Republic President, Bazoum.

This was as Buhari expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s ability to resolve the crisis.

Buhari prayed that Tinubu would be able to reverse the situation and ensure the safety of Bazoum and his family.

Tweeting, Buhari wrote: “As to be expected, I, like millions of other Nigerians, am shocked by the latest turn of events in Niger Republic.

“Concerns have been raised about the fate of democracy as a system of government in the country and in the wider sub-region, and equally so, about the safety of President Mohammed Bazoum and his family.

“I and my family are as much concerned about these as is everyone else.

“It is heartening to note that the ECOWAS, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is already dealing effectively with the matter, and our hope and prayers are that the unwanted situation will be completely reversed, and the safety and wellbeing of President Bazoum and his family ensured.”

PoliticsReport: Nigeria’s Petrol Subsidy Removal Biting European Refineries by ManirBK(op): 3:58pm On Jul 28, 2023
Nigeria’s fuel subsidy removal is affecting refineries far
away in Europe and threatening to squeeze European
refiners, Reuters is reporting.
The average monthly West African (WAF) gasoline
imports fell by 56 percent in the second quarter
compared with the first, according to Refinitiv Eikon
data.
North America and West Africa, with Nigeria at the top,
historically have been the top two destinations for petrol
exports from Europe (which produces more petrol than
it uses), Reuters said.
So far, benchmark profit margins for gasoline in
northwestern Europe have hovered at around $27 a
barrel, Reuters said, citing Refinitiv Eikon data.
“They have been supported by demand from North
America, a shortage of high quality blending materials,
disruption caused by low water levels inland and local
refinery outages,” the report reads.
“But analysts say the reduction of flows following the
upheaval in Nigeria will increase pressure on European
refiners, and any winners are likely to be newer Middle
Eastern refineries.”
‘ONSHORE PETROL STOCKS ROSE AFTER
SUBSIDY REMOVAL ‘
At the end of May, President Bola Tinubu announced
that the petrol subsidy regime was over.
Petrol demand in response fell by 35 percent, according
to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum
Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
According to Jeremy Parker of the CITAC consultancy,
which focuses on Africa’s downstream energy industry,
onshore petrol reserves in Nigeria have increased to
960,000 tonnes from an average of 613,000 tonnes
between January and June, signalling a decline in
demand.
“Meanwhile, the black market for smuggled subsidised
Nigerian fuel in Togo and neighbouring Benin and
Cameroon has collapsed, further reducing demand for
shipments via Nigeria,” Reuters said.
“There is no reliable data on how much fuel was
smuggled out of Nigeria under the subsidy regime, but
a comparison of estimates from official and
independent sources indicate more than a third of petrol
could have left state oil firm NNPC’s depots every day
to be sold illegally abroad.
“Without the subsidy, the financial incentive for
smuggling disappears.”
“The key point is demand from West Africa is drying up,”
Reuters quoted Raj Rajendran, Refinitiv lead oil analyst,
as saying.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest crude oil producer, relies heavily
on imports because of its inadequate domestic refining
capacity.
“Imports, however, are increasingly unaffordable as
Nigeria’s naira has weakened to record lows since the
central bank removed currency restrictions in June. At
the same time, inflation is near two-decade highs,”
Reuters said.
“The huge, much-delayed Dangote refinery was
designed to address the domestic supply shortfall, but
full 650,000 barrel per day production is unlikely before
the second quarter of 2025, CITAC estimates.”
Regardless, it is possible that the demand for petrol
would not fully recover in the country, Analysts told
Reuters.
