2016 turned out to be a high intensity musical year in Nigeria. Sounds and melodies juggled the air space as Nigerian artistes put out some really good songs. This brought bliss to majority of Nigerians who only would have had recession to talk about. The year allowed some brilliant new musical acts sell their craft to the ever-willing-to-listen Nigerian populace. This year, 2017 is new and Nigerian music lovers expect these breakout stars to reach further into the music space as they drop more fan-friendly music. The following artistes hold such immense promise in 2017: Johnny Drille: He was a Project Fame contestant in the season 6 edition of the prestigious music talent show. He took a while to find his feet in the industry; his first couple of releases laid the groundwork and he has built on his good debut. Since he dropped ‘Love Don’t Lie’ and ‘Wait For Me’ in 2015, it has been a climb of the rung for Johnny Drille. In 2016, he released some interesting songs of his own and had impressive collaborations with Niniola and Sister Wisdom; he even featured on Vector’s ‘Lafiaji’ album. On all of these songs, Johnny Drille did splendid. He continues winning over fans with every release. He boasts of a solid fan base and promises to continue satisfying their good music demand. It is safe to say, 2017 is definitely Johnny Drille’s year. Temmie Ovwuasa: This lady became the cynosure of the media only by signing for YBNL. At that point last year, it became foolproof that her music was going mainstream, early in fact. In 2016, Temi released two brilliant works, ‘Jabole’ and ‘Afefe’ and both songs enjoyed good circulation. Fans are expecting her to get busy dropping major songs this year, as it appears she has the focus of the YBNL team now that some artistes have left the label, whether for good or bad, time would tell. However, it can only be good influence on Temi’s nascent and promising career. Terry Apala: I call him my ‘surprise surprise’ of the music industry last year. This amazing artiste called our attention to an unpopular genre of music, Akpala-pop, and he made us love it. His ‘Champagne Shower’ was brilliantly composed and it got massive airplay. His forte only goes to show that the music industry appreciates ingenuity and new vibes; I don’t think that would change in 2017. Terry Apala definitely an artiste to watch this year. Wale Turner: An Instagram success story, Wale Turner’s music career is an interesting wonder. Started from skits to recording songs and then dropping a good video to set himself up as an interesting act in 2016. He even got the aka, ‘hottest’ to testify to the buzz he generates with his music. The Yoruba wordsmith dropped a song, ‘NO’ last year and music lovers went wild over it. Personally, I like the vocal experimentation and the humorous style of his music. Wale Turner does not give the indication that he has hit the brakes; he looks like he would be zooming into the 2017 music year. 2017 promises to be another year of music galore. As music lovers, we hope seriously that we are served a lot of quality music this year, even more than the previous years. Our eyes are fixed on the above listed artistes to deliver musical goodies this year, the thirst for quality music would definitely have us spreading our net but the artistes on this list sure have our attention. http://tushmagazine.com.ng/top-5-promising-musical-acts-2017/ lalasticala, mynd44, fynestboi, dominique

Buhari & his cabals at work. So Kano increased exponentially while Lagos is fixed at under 10million people. All these plans are geared towards 2019 election. Kano, Kaduna, Kastina in top 5. Do the calculations. |

Catherine Mayel Maku, known in the music industry as Cat Mayel is a Delta state indigene, a graduate of the University of Lagos and the eighth of nine children. “I usually call myself the black sheep because I am the one who causes all the trouble”, she says as she laughs. “I grew up in Lagos, and had all my schooling from primary to tertiary education in Lagos.” She lives and breathes music. Her passion for music can be felt in the energy and work she puts into making her productions to attain perfection. Watching her rehearse for her performance at her just concluded live session at Spinlet, I couldn’t help but wonder what drives her. Read more: http://tushmagazine.com.ng/cat-mayel-new-crush/

You have a problem. This is one of the reason Eazi is reluctant to claim Nigerian. Tell me which artiste in his category had a better year aside Tekno who allowed pride into his head. Say the truth and don't use "everyone is entitle to his own opinion" as an avenue for spewing trash. #ZagaDat GetUmad: |

Nigerians have come to realize that recession is not just a word, contrary to the statement of the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.“Recession” has slowed down capital and labour in the country. This has made decisions regarding finances to go through multiple and careful thoughts, especially for citizens running frugal budget. The advent of the current recession in the Nigerian economy has made quick-money schemes such as betting and lotteries enjoy massive patronage. The latest of the flock is the Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox widely referred to as – MMM. MMM operates in the form of payment of quick returns to the first set of investors from money invested by later investors. Investors are paid a certain percentage of the money they put into the scheme after a specified period. MMM has been in operation in Nigeria for a year now and a lot of Nigerians seem to have been blessed by this oasis in the desert. Many more Nigerians hope to join the ‘lucky team’ as testimonies about this program continue to spread. However, the prognosis on MMM tells that the scheme is bound to collapse. It has been said to be an unsustainable and terminal financial operation since its payments of investments and return of bonuses to investors depends on the payment of new of investors. If indeed, new subscription to this scheme steeps, where would the 30% bonus on investment come from? Since the money/ help rendered are not used for businesses with interest rate demand in return, how is the extra cash raised? These are important questions that MMM subscribers should ask. Questions about the validity of MMM are usually countered with the now popular saying “MMM pays”, but those who say this should be reminded that it pays only for a period and it is not a long-term stream of income. It should be noted that when it crashes, it buries people’s investment and the case of the Indians that committed suicide should serve as caveat emptor. Considering that the scheme reportedly crashed in other countries such as Zimbabwe and South Africa, it is rightly forecasted that it crash in Nigeria would is inevitable. The Nigerian government has since made attempts to warn Nigerians but beneficiaries would argue that the government is against this scheme because tax cannot be imposed on MMM operations. It is not a war between the governments and MMM administrators, but a valid warning to Nigerians against MMM to avoid the huge economic backlash that would ensue the predicted crash of MMM. The government of Zimbabwe and South Africa also made attempts to warn their respective citizens from participating. The Chinese government took even stricter measures against this particular program in their country. All these warnings and signs point to towards one direction, the coming crash of MMM. Although MMM is the “wonder-bank” of today, its days are numbered. |

Simisola Bolatito Ogunleye, known simply as Simi, is one of the foremost female artistes in the country. Her musical exploits has seen record hit songs with successful artistes such as Falz, Adekunle Gold, Praiz etc. She complements her music with a perky character. This has endeared her to a lot of fans across the country and beyond. Simi’s popularity grows concomitantly with her music and there is so much more to know about her. Here are some things you might not know about her: Simi is in a loving relationship but not with Adekunle Gold, Falz or YCEE: In an interview with Punch Simi cleared the air on her love life. She said,“there is no love triangle between Falz, Adekunle Gold and me. They are both great artistes that I work with and I enjoy working with them, that’s it. My account was not hacked when I tweeted that I was in a loving relationship with YCEE. People believe anything these days. We were obviously goofing around but some people saw it and believed. At the end of the day, I don’t think it is necessary to pay too much attention to it. Simi did not switch to mainstream music because of money: When she was asked, “you began your career as a gospel act. Why did you go mainstream?” This was her answer: “the first thing that comes to the mind is that I did it for monetary reasons. However music became about ‘more’; I wanted to have a broader purview. It was a tough decision for me to make at first. I wanted to explore music more. My faith in God hasn’t waivered because before I went mainstream, I prayed to God to bless my career if it was his plan for me. I also don’t see myself doing gospel music again.” Simi used to be a Tom-boy: In an interview with Punch she stated that,“while growing up, I was kind of a tom boy because I have three elder brothers, and from my mum I was the only girl and the last born.
