Rivers ANPP Chairman killed Unidentified gunmen have killed the Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Rivers State, Elder Julius Nwaofu at about 8pm in Port Harcourt. It was gathered that Nwaofu was shot dead within the Obiri-Ikwerre axis of the East-West as he was coming into Port Harcourt from the airport today. One of the sons of the deceased, Taleh Nwaofu, who confirmed the murder of his father , said the father was returning from a political meeting in Lagos when the incident occurred. Taleh further said the late ANPP chieftain was being driven by his wife when the hoodlums opened fire on the vehicle, killing him while the wife was not hurt. When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr. Benjamin Ugwuegbulem, said the killers drove off to an unknown destination after shooting and killing the politician at close range.Ugwuegbulem said men and officers of the command were working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous crime were apprehended. Meanwhile, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Rivers State has called for a full scale investigation into the gruesome murder of the state Chairman of the ANPP, Elder Julius Nwaofu. In a statement made available to in Port Harcourt, which was signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam, the ACN said it is only a full investigation that would dismiss the impression that there was on-going selective killing of opposition politicians. |

Nigeria sports minister Bolaji Abdullahi has told football authorities to revoke the contract of national technical director Tom Saintfiet. Back in March, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) offered the Belgian a four-year deal. But Saintfiet, who has previously worked in Namibia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia, has yet to sign a deal, citing difficulties in securing a Nigerian work permit. Abdullahi has now directed the NFF to appoint a local to do the job. JUlius Ogunro, special assistant to the sports minister, said in a statement that Abdullahi felt the decision was necessary. Ogunro added that there are many competent Nigerians who have strong knowledge of grassroots football in the country and are better suited for the role of a technical director. Meanwhile, the NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire confirmed that top officials met with the minister and discussed Saintfiet's role. "There's really nothing for us to say from our end but expect the board to make an official statement with regards this," Olajire told the BBC. "Yes there was a discussion between the minister and the NFF concerning the technical director role. "There will be an official statement from the NFF very soon." In a communiqué signed by NFF executive committee member Emeka Inyama, Saintfiet was expected to earn a monthly salary of US$20,000. As part of his brief, the 39-year-old was expected to oversee all the country's teams. |
