Nigeria’s chances of having Sidney Sam playing for the Super Eagles rather than the German national side appears brighter after the Bayer Leverkusen star hinted at the possibility of switching allegiance to Africa’s most populous nation. The Germany-born attacker has a Nigerian father and a German mother, and has featured for Germany at age-grade level but is yet to make an appearance for the European nation’s senior side. Former Nigeria coach Berti Vogts was the first to signify an interest in getting Sam to dump the white and black of Germany for the green and white of Nigeria back in 2008, and current handler Stephen Keshi a few months back expressed his desire to get the skilful left-footed forward to play for Nigeria. Reports credited to the Nigerian coach at the time suggested that Sam wasn’t keen on playing for Nigeria. But it appears the 24-year-old is now ready to feature for the Super Eagles. "I've already had contact with the Nigerian [Football] Association, when I was a child, because of my father,” he said in a report on Goal.com. “But at the moment, there is no talk. I focus on Bayer Leverkusen.” He added: “But generally, it would be interesting, I will be thinking about it.” The Bayer Leverkusen star also labelled Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben as his idol, and insists that his club have the ability to finish in the top five of the Bundesliga. "We didn't play the best that we can [at the start of the season]. We lost in Dortmund, and played out a 0-0 against Metalist Kharkiv. We're doing well, but missed the step up to the top," the former Germany youth international said. "I'm doing well. After my injury this summer, I'm getting more and more practice. The coach [Sami Hyypia], uses me more often as a substitute but I think I will be in the line-up again soon. "I think we have to be in the top five. But secretly, we hope for the top three. It's our duty to reach the international competition places, and we also want to impact on the Europa League. Sam also reacted positively to comments made by Jupp Heynckes, comparing the midfielder to Bayern star Robben. He continued: "That comparison means no pressure to me. I'm happy and motivated by it. Robben is a fantastic player and an idol for me. I hope to get where he is one day.”

There were more shocks on the second day of the second-leg final-round ties of 2013 African Cup of Nations qualifiers on Sunday. Seven ties were concluded on Saturday and among the eight to be played on Sunday, Cameroon were involved in a mighty upset as they fell to Cape Verde, who qualified for the tournament for the first time. Elsewhere, Ethiopia produced an excellent comeback to go through, along with Angola and Niger. Cameroon 2-1 Cape Verde (Agg: 2-3) The tiny Cape Verde Islands knocked out former World Cup quarter-finalists Cameroon to pull off one of the biggest shocks in the competition's history, despite defeat in Yaounde. Cape Verde - a country country with a population of about 500,000 - had claimed the first tie 2-0 and they strengthened their position after only 22 minutes of the return game when Portuguese-based striker Heldon scored with a free-kick. Cameroon were level minutes later through Achille Emana but still needed three more goals to overturn the aggregate deficit, a task that seemed beyond their dispirited performance. The hosts got their second goal four minutes into stoppage when 16-year-old substitute Fabrice Olinga came on to score at the end of a cross from Samuel Eto'o. The return of four-time African Footballer of the Year Eto'o and a change of coach ahead of the second leg did little to resurrect Cameroon's fortunes. They now miss out on the Nations Cup for a second successive tournament, suggesting the era of a regular role as one of African football's superpowers is at an end. Cape Verde, with a team drawn from their extensive diaspora in Europe, toyed at times with their much-vaunted hosts, passing the ball around at pedestrian pace in the second half to waste time. |
Ten foreign professionals have now joined the Super Eagles at the Metropolitan Hotel in Calabar for Saturday’s AFCON qualifier against Liberia. The 10 foreign-based players who joined the seven players from the Nigeria Premier League inlude; Austin Ejide, Vincent Enyeama, Nosa Igiebor, Ikechukwu Uche, Elderson Echejile, Ahmed Musa, Obiora Nwankwo, Efe Ambrose and Brown Ideye. Also in are three exciting youngsters, Ogenyi Onazi of Lazio, Inter Milan’s Joel Obi and Chelsea new boy, Victor Moses, whose girlfriend recently put to bed a bouncing baby boy in London. Three other professional players are expected to come on time yesterday before dinner so that they would participate in the morning and evening trainings today. There is a relaxed atmosphere in the training camp with Coach Stephen Keshi taking on Victor Moses over his newly born son. “Does the boy look like you or like the mother”? Keshi pressed on, and Moses replied, “Coach, he looks pretty much like me,” and the dining hall erupted in laughter. In the meantime, Eagles’ goalkeeper trainer, Ike Shorunmu, was excited yesterday morning when the team had their second training at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar. At the time of the session, Shorunmu was the only technical crew member that had his team of three goalkeepers complete, as Vincent Enyema, Austin Ejide and Chigozie Agbim were already in town, rearing to go. He promptly seized the opportunity of the keepers’ early arrival to drill them. “I’m happy with the form of all the three keepers and I must say any of them could be in goal on Saturday with what I have seen so far. All they need is a little pep up from the public perception of them and we are already getting results even on that,” he said. Shorunmu called on Nigerians to always support the team and not to put the blame at the doorstep of only the goalkeepers |

Duke-chimi:you dont know anything about football. |
i dont know why people expect us to go to leberia and win 5-0 , i think its a good result to take to the second leg with two away goals. |
I have watched this player for a while now i think will be a good addition to the Eagles to toughen up our midfield. Chinedu Ede (born 5 February 1987 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf) who plays for 1. FSV Mainz 05

Thirteen Nigerian footballers who have spent more than a month without work permits in Ukraine may soon be deported, reports in the eastern European country say. The players have not given up their hopes of playing for Ukrainian clubs but authorities say they are currently regarded as irregular migrants after they were found in an abandoned tourist camp in central Ukraine near Dnepropetrovsk. The camp’s personnel consisted of an old lady playing the roles of both administrator and guard, Ukrainian media report. The players say they arrived in Ukraine on August 1. The team’s captain says the players, all from top Nigeria Premier League clubs, came to Ukraine at the invitation of their manager, who promised to fix them up with local clubs, as such players are in great demand there. “One of us went with our manager to Donetsk and signed a contract with Olympia. Three other players left to try their luck, but I do not know where. We have played two games – with Obolon and Arsenal Kiev. I wonder why no one is taking us and why are we still here?” says Onome Simiyo. The players, the oldest of which is 24 years old, live in austere conditions. Their rooms are empty, and in some even the doors are missing. They take water from the nearest river. The Nigerians have some pocket money, around $25 each, which their manager gave them before leaving. They occasionally buy food in a nearby village. The players are holding on to their hopes, however. All of them are willing to stay in Ukraine and play football. In order to stay fit, they practice on a rural field every day. Meanwhile, local police and immigration control officials paid a visit to the camp and found out that their visas had expired, and that chances are the players crossed into Ukraine illegally. “They have to leave the country by September 15 or they will be deported,” explains immigration officer Sergey Chicher. |
