Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan is out of the country. According to aviation and presidency sources, the First Lady left Abuja for Europe a few hours ago. Dame Patience Jonathan’s trip, according to Presidency sources, is for medical reasons. “Madam went overseas for medical reasons and nothing else. She is not well and had to go see her doctors.” Daily Post asked the source if the doctor’s appointment was made previously or if it was an emergency. The source simply replied: “I do not know. I have told you all I know.” The First Lady’s departure was not without some mild drama. At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport where she departed from an Immigration officer was alleged to have been threatened by one of the First Lady’s bodyguards. According to sources at the airport, one of the First Lady’s bodyguards had taken her passport to be stamped at the Immigration desk. The Immigration officer observed that certain documents did not accompany the passport. Also, the State Security Service (SSS) should have stamped the passport before being presenting it to the Immigration desk. The officer informed Dame Patience’s bodyguard to get the proper documentations and stamp before presenting the passport to her. Daily Post was told that Dame Jonathan’s bodyguard insisted that the passport should be stamped immediately by the officer. When the Immigration officer refused to yield, the bodyguard allegedly pulled out a service revolver and ordered her to stamp the passport. It is not known when the First Lady is scheduled to return from her trip. Airports in Nigeria have not been operating normally due to the on-going nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to protest the removal of fuel subsidy. http://elendureports.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2616&Itemid=0 |

The recent discovery of an illegal National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp within the premises of Kin Kin Primary School, Minna, Niger State, has once again confirmed reports of the existence of such fake NYSC camps across the country. Officials of the State Security Service (SSS), who smashed the fake camp, said victims of the scam were mostly graduates of part-time programmes run by some of our universities. The victims, 21 females and 13 males, allegedly paid the syndicate running the scam various sums of money ranging from N120,000 to N350,000 each to participate in the illegal national service. One of the operators of the camp was arrested by the SSS. The existence of fake orientation camps such as the one in Minna is a fallout of the desperation of some Nigerian graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme even when they are not statutorily qualified for it. Laws governing the operation of the NYSC programme bar persons over the age of 30 and graduates of part-time programmes who are naturally expected to be workers over the age of 30, from participating in the scheme. However, the problem of unemployment in the country has fueled desperation of both qualified and unqualified persons to take part in national service as a stop-gap measure to cushion the harsh effects of unemployment. The dearth of jobs for fresh graduates, and the preference of many employers for young graduates with NYSC Discharge Certificates have made the acquisition of the certificate a compulsive affair for some older graduates. These older graduates, ordinarily, should just collect NYSC Exemption Certificates and look for permanent jobs, but the jobs are not there. So they try to bribe their way into the NYSC, often ending up as victims of fraudulent schemes such as the one that has now been discovered in Minna. We commend the SSS for smashing the illegal camp. The operator of the camp arrested during the raid should be properly grilled to unearth his collaborators in the devious scheme. It is possible that similar illegal orientation camps exist in the country. The SSS should sniff them out and ensure they are closed down. It is also highly unlikely that an illegal NYSC camp could be operated right in the capital of a state without the knowledge and connivance of some persons within the NYSC. Both the NYSC authorities and the SSS should therefore conduct thorough investigations to bring any person either closely or remotely connected to the illegal operation to book. In addition, the authorities of the primary school that was used for the fake camp should be made to shed light on their operations. They should, for instance, know who they released their premises to before doing so. Indeed, their role in the ugly episode needs to be properly understood and evaluated. The NYSC has a responsibility to get to the root of this scam because it could cast a slur on the integrity of the scheme. The organisation must also consider the possibility that the illegal camp operators may have been issuing out genuine Discharge Certificates fraudulently obtained from its office. One fact that is clear from this illegality is the need for the government to speed up job creation efforts, especially for young graduates. A situation in which graduates are desperate to enhance their chances of securing jobs via participation in the NYSC by foul means should further bring the scope of the employment crisis in the country to the authorities. Henceforth, all security agencies in the country should work in concert to bust illegal NYSC operations throughout the country to preserve the integrity of the scheme. |

Shooting Stars Sports Club have been disbanded by the Oyo State government, who own and finance the club. Mutiu Adepoju, who was until the disbandment, the Chief Executive of the club, told KickOffNigeria.com that he received the information on Tuesday morning. "I was informed by the club's Administrative Secretary that the commissioner of sports directed him to let the players and officials know that the club has been disbanded," Adepoju, a former international, told KickOffNigeria.com. However, Adepoju says he is yetr to receive formal written notification. "That may come later, but as far we know, all the players and officials have been asked to go. "I don't know what the next step for the club will be." The first of that next step will be to pay up outstanding debts of around N160 million owed to players, officials, other clubs and hotels. "We are owing debts of between N150 million to N160 million," Adepoju told KickOffNigeria.com. "It includes outstanding sign-on fees and salaries to players, clearance fees to other clubs, and unpaid hotel bills." This will mark the second time in their history that the club, one of the oldest in Nigeria, will be disbanded. The first was in 1984, when a team comprising some of the finest local talent available, lost the CAF Champions Cup final to Zamalek on home soil at the National Stadium, Lagos. Colonel Oladayo Popoola, Military Governor of Oyo State at the time, was so riled he promptly disbanded the team. Revived later, Shooting have fallen on bad times in the twenty years, enduring a yoyo existence up and down the Premier League. Last season, the club escaped relegation only on the last day of the season. A disgraceful state of affairs for a club which has won the Nigerian title a record five times, although their last triumph came in 1998. http://www.kickoff.com/news/25790/shooting-stars-sports-club-have-been-disbanded.php |
Contractors handling various projects, especially roads for the Imo state government have threatened to abandon their sites following the failure of government to release money to them One of the contractors (names withheld) who narrated their ordeal in the hands of the state government told Nigerian Horn that the state Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha asked them to go to work and that he will pay them fully instead of paying them in bits. According to him, Governor Okorocha told them to mobilize and start work fully if they are to receive their money. He also said that they were assured that they will be paid 25% mobilization and that the remaining 75% has already been guaranteed at the banks by the state government. Continuing, the contractor stated that based on the assurance by the state government, some of them borrowed money to hire equipments and mobilized their workers to site at both Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe. According to him, for over two weeks, they have been working in earnest. He however lamented that since they mobilized and began work, they have not been paid any money by the state government. He also disclosed that no contract paper was given to any of them. Expressing worry over the non release of money by the state government, the contractor said they are currently experiencing serious hardship. According to him, some of them came to Imo State from Abuja, Lagos and other parts of the country. He said they can no longer afford to pay their hotel bills, hire equipments nor pay their workers. Furthermore, he stated that they agreed to start work without payment because the state government assured them that it has reserved N65billion for road construction. While appealing to the Imo State government to bail them out through release of money, the contractor said that they will abandon work if nothing is done over their plight by end of next week. http://nigerianhornnewspaper.com.ng/ |
