Family / Re: Wedding In Absentia Using Pictures: Your Take by marabout(m): 4:45pm On Aug 23, 2012
It depends. in some naija cultures, it happens for many reasons.

One reason is for example a man and woman meet in USA and have just done white wedding there. Assuming the lady or man's status needs to be sorted (as one is a citizen there)and documents are with authorities. Meanwhile bride price has not been paid in Naija. Getting status sorted is more important in the short-term than traditional marriage.

Then the lady's dad dies in Naija.

The father-in-laws' family will not accept the man's contribution to the funeral (something no daughter wants to happen), except the traditional marriage is done quick. But both cannot go. The best option is to do it in absentia.
I have seen a few similar cases like that from South-South.

Yes if you are in Naija marrying your childhood sweetheart and your parents are all there, you may never know this.

Travelling abroad has thrown up many situations that require flexibility.

You are both right really. It's the gateway between East & West. Though turks feel more European. If they were a majority Christian country, most would easily call them Westerners.

Not everybody understands global politics like you do. Some just talk of weapons and what not. Israel would rather not be fighting every neighbour if they can avoid it.
Being war-ready everytime costs money. Even Israeli girls must do military duty. Israel pays a heavy price.

na2day!:

War is not as easy as you think, we are not talking about weapons now,
Are you aware the same America that is arming Israel with advanced weapons is also arming Egypt?
Sane Governments do their best to support neighbors that will be friendly to them and go out of their ways to undermine those who won't.
If Morsi have his way, Israel will become a giant Bull's eye pinned to the wall.

If you think Ibos are the one soiling or soiled Nigeria's name and not people like Bank-Ole, Ibori, Abacha, Patricia Etteh, Akingbola, Bode George and Farook Fackrook, Mutalab and Boko Terrorists, while not let Ibos Have Biafra? Let the Edos also go and have their own country. Afterall, Gambia has less than 2 million people.

That way Western and Northern Nigerians full of saints can have a dream country "Odu-Arewa" Naijeriya. Bankole, Abacha's children, Iyabo OBJ and IBB kids can take turns to rule. What a great future. grin

Fact is it depends on what you do in Naija. If your condition is poor in Naija, you are better off here: free eduction, free healthcare for your kids and some chop money for your kids- all kids whether parents poor or rich. If you earn 250k and above monthly in Naija and own your own house, no need coming here. Except for post-grad education or visit.

You cannot deny that if 50% of Naija are absolutely poor, maybe only 5% are absolutely poor here.

Most Naija athletes are already based abroad anyway or have no problem getting visa to any country, so why run away?

Don't be surprised that the camerounians who ran away only got into the team through corruption and are not even athletes at all.

But curious that the Igwe has a senior brother. In most ancient African ruling houses, the first son becomes king. That prevents fighting over the stool. With so much dispute over kingship these days... hmmm.

edicolove:

In 1914, Oba Ovworamen, who is known as one of the most powerful Obas in history, was deported to Calabar by the british and nothing happened. I was born and grew up in Benin and I know the Oba is highly respected. But the moment you start meddling in politics, you loose that respect. First problem is that your subjects become split and that's where it begins. I insist that Osiomole is doing well but the Oba should stear clear off politics. He will mess himself up sooner or later. Nothing is permanent in any human society.
.

For the record Oba Ovonranmen Nogbaisi was deported to Calabar in 1897. He joined his ancestors in 1914.

Glad that you're Benin-born and bred. But there's perhaps some history you don't know.

The Iyase of Benin is the traditional Prime Minister (chief political officer of the kingdom). Sending him to receive a political leader (GEJ) is an appropriate step. He would have also initially received the Portuguese in the 1480s, especially if they came during the traditional period of fasting and reflection called AWE.

The Iyase of Benin has existed in Benin many centuries before the post began in any Western country. Cardinal de Richlieu "L'eminence rouge" under King Louis XIII of France (appointed on 13/08/1624) was the first western Prime minister. He features prominently in "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas.

The British Prime minister position was only created by the German king of England George I in 1714 so that he could spend most of his time in his native Hannover (Germany).

Whatever the Iyase said, he did so as a political officer of the Kingdom and has for some 800 years been allowed to do so. The King never by himself made any such statement. To say he spoke for the king is akin to saying that David Cameron only says what the Queen of England wants him to say.

Now about the Iyase of Benin: it is not necessarily a hereditary position. The Binis worked it out long ago that such a high political office should be occupied by the best pair of hands of Edoid origin or royal ancestry/connections at least.

This in theory gives the king the latitude to chose from a large pool of sagacious, savvy and competent people. In THEORY, the Iyase, apart from Edo people, can be from some families in Lagos Island, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa and certain areas of Rivers state. Even Onitsha.

Around 140 years ago, the Oba of Benin appointed a son of the traditional ruler of Brass, now in Bayelsa state (of Benin royal origin by the way) as the Iyase of Benin. His descendants are prominent Bini people today like the Otokitis.

Because we Africans hold ourselves at such low esteem, we refuse to learn of the indiginous political/administrative advancement we made before colonialism. Tribalism in modern Naija has also contributed to ignorance.

If best practices are adhered to, I think 6% getting 1.1 is ok. At our graduation in UK (University of London) ages ago, about 6-7% of our co-hort got 1.1, I think about 23% got 2.1. But you work really hard for 1.1 and 2.1. With good facilities in a boarding school environment and students mostly from richer backgrounds (no money worries), it's plausible.

Billyonaire: Giving Cheiftancy Titles are one of the tools used by royalties to collect money from politicians and even the wealthy from any field of successful endeavor. I can not say that many royal fathers do not also receive money to support candidates. I will not say thats the case with the Bini Oba, but to avoid messing up the palace, like what happened in Calabar, when Donald Duke, the then governor, used court action to dethrone a sitting King of the Efik Kingdom, it was not unconnected with political royalty, I can not say same can not happen in Bini if a crazy Abacha-like fellow take over affairs of state....So cultural and royal heads....should set up machinery that persuades elected office holders to fulfill their electioneering promises and not play to the gallery.

My brother, it's obvious you're not familiar with Bini tradition/history. The British tried to install another Oba while Oba Ovonramen was in Calabar. They couldn't. So from 1897-1914 the Oba ruled in exile. No Benin man will dare to take that throne except the crown prince and only after his father is gone. So to preserve a monarchy/dynasty from circa 1169 AD till now in same family by male premogeniture only is not a joke.

As far as I am concerned Nigeria and its FG and its president is a joke.
A failed experiment waiting to disintegrate. And we all know it. Nigeria will be no more. The Benin Kingdom will survive like it always has and so will its monarchy and people, who have always been there for each other. Fighting off enemies successful except for British invasion using sophisticated weaponry.

Even if you combined all the mad dogs like Saddam, Gaddafi, Hitler etc, they will still not succeed.
Maybe where you come from just anyone can become your king if your president/governor thinks so. Not so in Benin.

Billyonaire: Personally I do not care who wins, and I have no reason to take sides. But a Royal Kingdom is not supposed to meddle in partisan politics, by supporting one, he vetoes the other. It leads to division, what happens if the person he did not support wins, the rest is for you to imagine......These so called Sultans, Obas, Obongs and the rest of them do not help fight kidnappings, terrorism or oil theft etc, infact if they die today, innocent citizens will be killed for human sacrifices on their burial. I rest my case.....
.

While Oba of Benin is usually neutral in politics, he has a moral duty to tell politicians about their failures. His people expect that from him.

If you were in Edo State for the 8 years of Lucky Igbinedion's misrule, the Oba did not mince words about condemning his non-performance. This was interpreted as the Palace being against Lucky Igbinedion. If you think of it, it would have been easier for the palace to collect money and look the other way and let Lucky continue his corruption. But The palace confronted him. In some parts of Nigeria, the King would have granted Lucky Igbinedion a chieftaincy title, no minding his mediocrity. I heard that even Patience Jonathan is collecting Chieftaincy titles all over Nigeria now.

Billyonaire: I was a fan of Oshiomole in his days in the NLC, I want the best man to win, but for an unelected Oba to take sides in Politics automatically vetoes all other candidates, meaning, if another candidate wins, the loyalty of state is divided. All these so called royal figures and ancient Obas have no values in scheme of things, you hardly hear of them helping in fighting corruption or kidnapping, but during elections after exchange of millions, you see the potbellied figures coming out to take sides. Its a shame on democracy....
.

The Benin monarch is too versed on protocol to ignore the C in C. Remember he ran the cabinet office in Gowon's regime as parmanent secretary. People should re-read the article. THE OBA SAW THE PRESIDENT ALONE IN PRIVATE. The Iyase (traditional prime minister) made the public speech. The Oba is about 86 years old now. Though very fit and athletic as a young man, an 86-years old man is still fairly old and may for various reasons not give public audience daily.

While it is fashionable for some monarchs to troop to Abuja to congratulate any new president, a Benin monarch doesn't do that. Any monarch should seek for the upliftfment/development of his Kingdom. Any central or state government that has contributed nothing to a kingdom (like PDP governent since 1999), any representative of such a party deserves a lukewarm reception at the very least. I would rather a monarch stick up for his people than go and collect money from Aso Rock to support the FG or their local non-performing stooges.

This is election time. Various people will interprete things for their own benefit. Presidents/politicians come and go. Oba ghator kpere, Ise!

The man who killed Head of state Gen. J T Aguiyi Ironsi in Ibadan (2nd Nigerian coup in July 1966).
He's currently one of Naija's richest men. Has crude oil blocks. He was former defense minister and former head of advisory council to Goodluck Jonathan among others. Married to one fine lady called Daisy from Edo State.

Bone that one! My friend's wife is a stay-at-home mom, they have one 2 year old and she's pregnant. The hubby is still looking for a way to cheat, saying he was coerced into marriage to one prospective gf (nope, he swore that he wanted to marry, met his wife and married 6 months after, she wasn't pregnant). When a man wants to cheat, he will use his dead grandfather to justify his behavior. I've seen men accuse their gfs that they cheated because the babe na virgin (see laugh!) As if they didn't know it. They were all wrong, but the guy doesn't sound remorseful, so let her pack into her family home, and let him decide what he wants, wife or housemaid.

A cheat will try to cheat BUT he may not have the chance to actually do it. One fine Ekaette bending over to serve Oga at 8pm alone in the house when his wife is who knows where. Aah dat na big temptation oo. He may have resisted it for several weeks and later succumbed.

Some women never allow a housemaid to serve the husband food. There is something very important(nurturing behaviour, an ur-instinct)about it. It's a wife's role. Ditching tradition in the name of modernity is all good but has consequence.

Well, the man may be tired of his absentee wife already and cares no more. In Africa people marry and expect a baby in a year's time. Here's a woman who can't because of her job and a maid who can. O tan.

If she can't accept polygamy, then divorce him. Ten year's time she can marry one 70 year old rich man when she's finally ready. She can chose money & career over family now. Afterall people like Arunma Oteh are still single. Even Oprah & Condi Rice.

Religion / Re: Religious Experiences: A Result Of 'The God Chemical' In The Brain? by marabout(m): 4:45am On Jun 17, 2012
A part of the limbic system (necleus accumbens) has been well-established to be associated with pleasure, emotion and addiction (among others)-the heavenly feeling people have when they take reacreational drugs or the sense of reward you have after investing in a Gucci bag/shoe for example. Not to forget sex.
Because the limbic system is probably the oldest part of the brain to develop, its structures have many functions as mentioned in the poster's write up. The system simply had to multi-task.

Also remember that the limbic system acts on the autonomic nervous system (fright, fight or flight regulator). If you also consider other primitive functions like mating, smell, regulating BP and heart beat and more advanced ones like building up a database of memory and processing new stimuli/information, it's not surprising that it has a profound effect on religious experience.
This does not mean that the experience itself is not real or that it is real.
Just maybe the need to be religious or believe in something/someone is a quintessential and basic human need that is almost as old as humanity itself considering that the oldest part of the brain controls it.

Nubiaan Queen: Hi

Its painful I can't deal with this..I have been diagnosed with
premature menopause at age 30 and it is a nightmare..I had to break up
With my boyfriend of 3years simply because I love him so much
And believe he deserves all the best in life including kids
I love him so much and can't stand seeing him with someone else
apart from the fact that I will never smell or touch a baby of my own
But I pray hard cause I know my God won't fail me..
Baby Dust for all of you!
God Bless
.

Dear Nubiaan Queen,

Please don't take your decision to end it with your man in a hurry. Great that you love him so much. But don't just assume that you're going to help him by leaving him. What if he loves you just as much as you love him? And he wants you both find a solution together? Whatever the case explain fully to him what the situation is (if you haven't yet). In this day and age, a man and woman have to take joint decisions. In fact he should be right there with you in the hospital/at doctor's if circumstances permit
What if the current diagnosis is wrong? If you are going through stress and not eating well/lost weight, it can affect your ovulation. At 30, it's pretty early. The youngest I have seen is menopause at 34. Is there any history of prem manopause among women in your family? Please get other experts to have a look. A teaching hospital is one place to go for a second opinion.
Don't shoulder everything alone. Don't give up and pray.

People are now not ready to suffer to the sins of others (with whom they increasingly feel they have less in commom).

Naija is becoming more of a geographical expression. A peaceful divorce would be a good way forward.
