Health / Re: Why Patients Lie During Medical Consultations? by marabout(m): 6:36am On Mar 10, 2012
I think there should be more public education on health. Instead of all this idol, that celebrity program, on tv.

The ministry of health and GMDC can do more to spread awareness and reduce stigma.

In our conservative society where some still see illness as a punishment from God, a generational curse or whatever, concealing or playing down symptoms (even when doctors can see obvious signs) is not unusual.
Health / Re: Why Patients Lie During Medical Consultations? by marabout(m): 11:44pm On Mar 09, 2012
Onyx76,

Many reasons:
(1) To avoid labelling (alcoholic, substance abuser, prosmicuous, etc). No Naija guy ever caught zakwa.
(2) Fear: some don't really want to hear the true diagnosis and hope doctor will find nothing.

(3) Lack of awareness: most don't know that the doctor's diagnosis about 80% of the time (at least in UK) is said to be based on medical interview. Many think your stet of sphyg are more important. This dokitor just dey tok tok, when e wan do the test sef?

One that always surprises me is family history: among our African people nobody in their family ever had any disease. All dey kampe. Diabetes, mba. HTN, such don't run in my family. Stroke, lai lai. Cancer, aah na dem oyinbo disease be that gan.
Don't just mention mental health issue at all. Nobody dey accept am.
Another one is an educated person telling you he doesn't know what his father died of 10 years ago. " The man just died suddenly, i think he died around age 60 or 65, I was still in Nigeria then". Then he suddenly says that the doctors at UCH said his father needed to be washing his blood in the machine thrice a week (dialysis) but it was too expensive.

White people are more open about those information.

@ Ceasy, Perx's loved ones & NLers: my condolences.

Thanks NLers for your outpouring of grief since this sad news broke.

Perx will be smiling up there knowing how much love you all showed her in her last months with us.

Thank you NLers for your love towards her. How we wished all her efforts to get better had a happier outcome.

Nonetheless, TeHn did a great job and this sad news should not deter or discourage from contunuing the good work.
If anything, it should remind us that we can our little bit to try and fill some of the huge vacuum left by our uncaring and corrupt leaders.

RIP Princess.  We will miss you and your witty posts.

Is there light/electricity around these plots?

What documents do the number (3) plots have. i.e the 300K plots?

What's your best price for the 900k plots?

@Idowu.

Don't mind Missy-B, she's just a bit rude. Because this forum is anonymous, some people have no respect. I doubt if Missy-B can say such to my nieces face to face.

@Idowu, you advised me to open a new thread for Akudo but I have not because I have not been able to independently verify it. I live far away from home. Just to avoid false accusations like that of Missy-B here of yahoo-yahoo, I didn't carry on. Not yet. I was hoping that a Lagos-based NLer could go to LUTH to verify it.

In my professional life, Kidney and Liver transplants are two major specialisations (National referal centres) of my humble office. I even discussed it with a  colleague, a brilliant surgeon.

Knowing the consequences of delay in Akudo's case, I had to share it.

@ Missy-B,
As for Perx, apart from the fact that she's probably my kinswoman, I doubt if you have given more than other people here towards helping her. For you to say that asking for help for a dying young woman is derailing Perx's case is ridiculous. Peace.

^Dude I might sound mean but it would be best to open a thread for dat link, to much going in one thread would divert our campaign (no offence)

Dat said,I must commend you for starting dat blog,May God multiply ur blessings as you continue to reach out for help on behalf of Akudo.

P.S- I await ur thread wink smiley

@Idowu,
Thanks but I cannot take the glory for it oo. I didn't do the blog. However, I would like to extend your request for God's blessings to those who actually did the blog and Akudo herself.

I just bumped into the blog and wanted to share it with our noble and kindhearted fellow NLers. Akudo clearly needs any support and publicity she can get.

@Vitorado,

Thanks very much. Several sources have told me that on site hollowed block makers don't do a good job. That they are too soft and break easily. But factory made ones are better.

Your experience is obviously and glaringly different. Mr Umoh may be needed. I will see.

Thanks again.
Properties / Re: Cost Of Building A 5 Bedroom Bungalow In Benin-city. by marabout(m): 2:50pm On Jan 11, 2012
@ Marabout. It really depends on the number of labour your builder is planning to deploy to site for the job. Ideally, i was made to understand when i wanted to start mine that it is usually on contract basis and this also depends largely on the negotiating power of the builder with the labourers.  By and large, i think that amount quoted is a bit high. i advice you negotiate a bit further down.

nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

@ Vitorado, thanks for your reply.

I will do a bit of comparison first. Did you buy the hollowed blocks you used for your foundation before molding in situ? If yes, how much per 1000?
Properties / Re: Cost Of Building A 5 Bedroom Bungalow In Benin-city. by marabout(m): 12:53am On Jan 11, 2012
@Vitorado,

Is labour cost of N215,000 a reasonable quotation for 2 flats foundation (4 rooms and 2 rooms) for digging, foundation and up to dbc? Just for bricklayers and diggers. Location is by Sakponba Road.

@Sweetedge,

How much is the estimate for 2000 blocks by Mr Umoh. I mean sum total: cement, sand, labour and all. Hollowed blocks I presume.
Romance / Re: Children Produced From Green Card Marriage How Do They Feel? by marabout(m): 9:09pm On Jan 07, 2012
Sade was born in Nigeria. That her dad used her mum for residence permit is news to me.

I those days, Nigerians didn't need work permit in UK. Even when it became mandatory, it was easy to get. In any case, most Brtish-educated Nigerians (like Sade's dad) quickly went back home to work as there were plum jobs waiting.

I grew up around mixed race kids whose dads typically returned with a European wife after studies abroad. When they divorced in Naija, some of the naija dads got custody of the kids. This kind of prompted some white mums to stay in Naija (obviously in a different house) while the kids were still young and some returned to Europe.

Of course most the mixed race kids moved abroad typically after Uni

Please check your facts.

The issue of using for green card/residence permit is more complex  than people think. The issue of anbandonment is even more complex. After divorce, some women use the kids a tool to punish the man. Some men just give up.

Vitorado,

I was telling a friend  yesterday who's on the verge of buying something at ugbiyoko to consider Amagba.

Are they selling single plots, 50 by 100 in the area you're building yours?
Would the community, crop and youth fees be the same as for 100 by 100 or 100 by 200?

140k for community fee would be a bit steep for the guy.

Politics / Re: Why Are Nigerian States Mostly One-city States? by marabout(m): 9:19pm On Dec 18, 2011
Poster,

What does it really matter if you call a settlement a town or city?
The problem in Nigeria is underdevelopment. A person living in Ikot, Jalingo, Lagos, Kano, Aba, Ibadan all have the same proplem of poor water and electricity supply.

Gemany is one of the most developed countries. Someone  living in Essen, Munich, Berlin, Wiesbaden, Hamburg,  Paderborn or Freising  can be sure of basic facilities of high quality. Now these Cities and towns vary a lot in population and size but living  standard is high all over.

So we should focus on how to develop the whole country, then it wouldn't bea big deal if  city or town.

Big Smiles Charity Organisation (BiSCO) kind of sounds cool.

Well any plans to officially register the organisation? In UK /USA as well as in Naija?

We don't want to be breaking any laws if we don't officially have tax exemption.

I have no doubts you guys have already thought about these things.

Kudos.
Nairaland / General / Re: Nairaland Charity Organisation- E-Helpers Network by marabout(m): 9:54pm On Dec 07, 2011
Rudebwoy:

I think it will be a good move if we can have the organisation in zones or states. Where every zone will tackle the needs of their area while there will be a general co-ordinator that will stand as the president. Then there will be periodic online meetings with all the zones to submit reports on the achievements of a given period. Just my opinion. Meanwhile i work in the media. When i read about the man that was living under a bridge, i wanted to publish Nairaland Charity's intervention. I sent a personal msg to Seun on twitter and facebook to get his consent but he did not respond. I may not be an active poster but i live and die on NL.

Thanks guys for your noble efforts!

I personally second the idea put forward by RUDBWOY to consider  running this organisation at least in ZONES if not states. Even successful churches do same. This will enable NCO to have it's tentacles nationwide.

The central committee is fine but local zonal volunteers are also needed. Since nobody is paid to do this, there is no issue of staff costs associated. I live abroad and so I cannot be part of it myself.

The other matter is that some people may be more inclined to donate to causes in certain zones more than others. This may not be palatable to some people but it is reality.
We need to show that it is really a nationwide thing, not just a Lagos-orientated one.
We complain about the FG not running a true federal system, let us better. Yes, wherever two or more people are gathered together (physically or virtually) for any reason, there is politics involved.
