Tom and George used to be part of the same group until they fell out and George joined a faction of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), one of the more active rebel groups in the delta.

MEND said in an e-mail to Reuters that George escaped "alive and well" from an attack on his hotel on Thursday, but several aides were killed by troops firing rockets and machine guns.

The group threatened reprisal attacks from midnight unless the government halted the military operations.

Honestly, this seems to be the worst news I've heard about Nigeria in recent days. Fighting with dollar is not the solution to the economic travails of Nigeria.

All these your rantings will not stop my boys from blowing up any pipeline carrying gas from our lands to an enclave called Olokola. I will personally spearhead the mission to blow up that pipe. Don't doubt this: the day Alamiyeseigha returns to Bayelsa, there will be dancing in the streets from Yenagoa to Wilberforce Island, congratulatory messages in the media, a 21-gun salute by the combined forces of ethnic militants and kidnappers of the Niger Delta., and the media so complicit in this matter will report it all with relish and flourish. This is the sad thing about our country: on every score, in every matter, we find it so expedient to strike the recursive note.
