My body is still operating Nigerian time, which means I'm having a bit of trouble getting quality sleep. Also it's still bright by 8pm but by 9.30pm it gets dark. Anyways I usually wait till 12am or so before going to bed but I'm usually up by 4am (which translates to about 9am Nigerian time) and I find it difficult resuming sleep as it gets bright pretty early. All this will change when winter comes.

Anyhoo, yesterday I decided to stroll around early in the morning and on returning, I saw one neighbor outside smoking. He waved at me, I waved back and decided to approach him.
Turns out he's a Nigerian (either born there or came in as a child). We got talking and it struck me how different people's perspectives can be.

This guy was longing to move to Nigeria. He had this romantic (and unrealistic) notion of Nigeria. Believe me when I say I was quite attentive but at some point, I had to puncture his bubble. We talked a lot about government, he has a white baby Mama and two kids but he says he's not impressed with their women, rather he likes African women.

He felt the system was unfair to him, cheating him and depriving him etc. I had to tell him a few stories about Nigeria. He literally has no idea apart from one or two anecdotes. He said he likes Davido, Wizkid, PSquare (he doesn't know Tuface), but said Sunny Ade is not his thing (and he actually sang some lines). He's yoruba but doesn't speak, not even pidgin.

Anyway, I encouraged him to get a Nigerian passport as the first step and travel down and look around. He's into construction, has two cars, a truck and a nice Chrysler. Said he had his own construction company and offered me a job on the spot. A roofing job at 15/h.
I told him I'd think about it but I'm not likely to take it. It however reinforced the things I'd read online about networking. I mean this was someone casually offering me a job.

Now, he told me he grew up on the streets of Toronto and that between 17-25 he had been in and out of jail. He said he's trying to straighten his life out now and he's in college making straight A's.
In his mind, when he finishes he will come to Nigeria and start to make a difference in the country. I didn't know where to start from. I simply told him that many people in Nigeria wish to leave the country for a number of reasons which I tried to outline.

It's easy to take something for granted if you do not have another perspective. I wish him luck and I hope he's able to visit so he can decide what he really wants.

Oh and he asked me at some point where I was from in Nigeria. I told him and then my people, he did it. He actually asked me if I knew this person, and that person, and that person. He was sure I'd know this one because he's a chief. How about that one. I got tired of telling him that there are hundreds or thousands of people with that same name. Finally I gave him an idea of the population size by states. I think he got the picture after that but I believe he'll do it again.

You're lying. Anyone who lives in Canada knows this story is nonsense. I fail to see what you're trying to accomplish with this lie. You were born in Canada. You NEVER suffered like this guy or lived the true Nigerian life.

Good day to all the gurus on this thread working to help put us through and answer our questions. I just started this process and a friend of mine also wants to commence hers too. Now shes in a dilemma and I want to seek your opinion on her case.
She just started a thriving business here in Nigeria and it's really thriving for her. Her husband also just started a company with great prospects. However, she wants to apply for skilled worker program because she doesn't know what the future holds and she also doesn't want to wait incase this program is cancelled in the nearest future in order to avoid regrets. So the question is cam she apply for these skilled workers program and not live permanently in Canada. Can she be going in and out. We googled it and it days one has to have spent a total of 1000 days to be eligible for citizenship in a period of 5 years. But we dont know if its continuous period of 1000 days. Can someone with a pr status live in an out of Canada and still be eligible for citizenship. Thanks

It's not continuous. Just within that 5 years. As long as you meet those days you should be fine.

You gave a very good reply, one that I couldn't agree any more with... though with the exception of the bolded. The earlier respondent may have been wrong but that doesn't make him an enemy of progress, that's too serious an accusation to just fling at someone. One may argue that the matter at hand is too dire to pardon misinformation but hey that's a risk you sign up for when soliciting advice on forums. The whole purpose of posting answers on a forum is to help checkmate such ill advise, as it is bound to happen no matter how informed we are. Having people answer questions in the open allows a peer-review(like you did) that normally wouldn't be possible with private message. Knowing this, if someone has any intention of sabotaging another, do you think he would be foolish enough to do it in the open? It may be that he hasn't lived in Ottawa, so it is possible his advice was based on hearsay. In such a case, that can only mean he wasn't cautious to indemnify himself, doesn't make him an Enemy of progress.

If someone asks you for advice and you're extremely ignorant about the situation. Yet not only do you give the person advice, you tell them not take the opportunity. Isn't that enemy of progress?

Good morning folks. Please I have a good problem and I'm losing sleep over it already.

I'm currently in Calgary, staying with my cousin for about 2 months now. Just recently, I got a job here in Calgary and I'm expected to resume tomorrow. Let me also say that the pay is quite good too. However, last week thursday, I got another job at Ottawa and the difference in salary is about 18k (gross)

Both jobs are of the same category, Senior IT Security role.

Now to the main point: I'm seriously contemplating relocating my wife and son to Ottawa but my cousin feels the increase in salary is not material enough to offset the cost of living @ Ottawa in short and long term. He's of the opinion that staying close to family and friends in Calgary will be beneficial to me in the long run.

Please for folks living in both cities, which do you think is the best choice at this point in time? Should I stay in Calgary or move to Ottawa?

P.S My wife is also into IT Security but she's yet to get a job in Calgary yet.

Thanks

Bros jump on the next plane with your family. To begin with Ottawa is a cheap city to live in. It's a small city (a bit over a million) with big city amenities. Taxes in Ontario is a bit more, but that extra 18k gross will more than offset it. An extra 18k gross a year will net you at least an extra 9k in your pocket easily. You'd be crazy to turn down an extra 9k in your pocket yearly. This narrative that Ottawa is way more expensive than Calgary is a lie. I've lived in both cities. Lastly with Ottawa being the capital, a lot of government agencies are looking for someone in your field. I feel there's more opportunities in Ottawa for you. Not to mention you already got a job that pays 18k more. People should be careful of people who are enemies of progress. Canada is yours to explore. If things don't work out trying to explore X then you can always return to Calgary. I can live with making a mistake, but not regrets.

I don't know what country you are talking about with small roads but in the county I live in the roads we have are far better than the ones I saw in the USA for sure. Then Again I saw a lot of second hand accidented cars in the US, here we use straight from the factory brand new cars that's for a country that produces lots of Cars and exports to other parts of the world.
A lot of you just come to type with your imaginations. If you haven't travelled between at least 3 great countries within the EU, Schengen and the USA you have absolutely no right to comparison.

Which country do you live in ? My friend other than the amazing social benefits most western European countries offer, Europe is trash. Everyone knows it. A foreign language other than the U.K., small roads, small houses, etc. The world revolves around North America and its culture. We all know it deep down.

You can apply anytime but you'll be denied. You must show ties to Canada specifically financially. Just let the conference go this time.

The Canadian government is very strategic. They know what they're doing believe me. The country has the most secure and controlled border in the world. Due to them being surrounded by the ocean in the east and west, then America in the south. Nobody is sneaking in easily. And the few bad Nigerians are dealt with immediately. Only the sane, educated, law abiding Nigerians are let in. The influx of Nigerians coming in are only making the country better actually.

7 out of 10 asylum cases from Nigerians are denied. It doesn't matter if you claim homosexuality, Bokoharam or domestic violence.
If someone tells you they know people who have done it, do not believe them, there's a 3 year backlog for asylum cases.

I know a few people going through the process. To begin with a claiment gets a work permit for those 3 years, and children would have access to free schooling and healthcare. For those 3 years, any person who has sense can find a way to stay. So maybe marry someone and give them belle. If Canada rejects their claim for example, they can appeal on compassionate grounds; saying it'd be punishment to separate a man from his pikin and wife. With a 3 year span to brainstorm, a true hustler can find a way to legalize themselves. And after the appeal, it can even take a year plus to hear the appeal; further giving a person more time to hustle the system. I know a few who have got papers this route.

Oga, abeg. What details do you want? How she laid down three times to get pregnant or what exactly? What is your business with that? If you really needed the details why didn't you ask right away? You just wanted to bash the lady without knowing her story, a story which she's not even obliged to share with you. You could have just remained quiet. We must not hear your spew out insensitive comments on people all the time. She's a baby mama and so what? Did she kill anyone? I'm just angry about your downright rude and insensitive comment.

I didn't want to address this but I will. Nigerians who live in Nigeria. NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES/SITUATION. In the west people are not really judgmental about your personal life. As long as you stay in your lane and don't get in the way of someones life/money, the next person doesn't care about you. EVERY TIME I come on here, I constantly have to decode posts. After decoding a posts, I then say to myself "oh he/she is trying to do this. Why didn't they just say that ?" If the way you're trying to get into Canada is illegal and you want to legalize yourself for example, just say that. Someone reading your post may have been in that situation and found a way to legalize themselves. But when you're constantly taking in codes, they may not understand what you're trying to ask and not help.

For example she said this:" my problem is that I have 3 children who are bearing their father's surname and am like a single mother cause their father went to Europe when they were small and we didn't do traditional marriage or wedding all we did was normal introduction to our parents" What the fvck does this have to do with her question or migrating to Canada ? Is she ashamed to being a single mother ? You think the Canadian government gives a damn why you're a single mother ? All she had to say is that I'm a single mom of 3 trying to migrate to Canada under the caregiver program. Whats with the long talk my sista ? Ironically I have tried to get my cousin to Canada through the same route with a lawyer. I could have given her some advice/personal experience. Everyone should just be honest and direct with your questions. After-all, these are strangers on here. Who cares if they judge you.

Guys pls I need urgent ans ...am migrating to canada through the newly lunched caregiver program ....I have gotten a job remaining to apply for visa .....my problem is that I have 3 children who are bearing their father's surname and am like a single mother cause their father went to Europe when they were small and we didn't do traditional marriage or wedding all we did was normal introduction to our parents ...pls how am I going to prove to Canadian immigration that am the mother of the 3 children since we're are not bearing same surname .

So you're a baby mama wanting to bring your pikin with you to Canada under the caregiver program ? Call it what it is. Canada can prove they're you're biological children. But I don't think you'd qualify under that program if you decide to bring your kids with you. Nigerians barely get a visa for that program. In fact I've never met a Nigerian who has.

Good day people.

Please i have some questions on my mind to help me settle in proper on arrival in canny. I studied French language in the university and have been teaching it ever since(over 5years) but I'm considering a career change in Canada because i want something more liberal and stuff that will give me the ability to relate more with people i.e adults. Although i wouldn't using French skill as well.
I like the media i.e radio n TV (i also have some experience in it but no certification).
Please what do you advise? What kind of careers are currently in high demand? Is media OK? What about HR? I just need general advise based on the present situation in Canada.
Thanks a lot.

Teaching French with the school board is a good profession. I'd carry on with that. If you don't want too I'd try working with the federal government doing something like communications. But continuing teaching would be very lucrative. Specifically with the school board.

What's the difference between salary paid job and hourly paid job and which one is better?

Thank you all in advance

Salary you get x amount of dollars each pay regardless of how many hours you work. Hourly you get x amount of dollars each hour, and after a certain amount of hours, then overtime pay. If working on salary they'll work you to death. Hourly is much better.

Hello all,

I would require your advise learned and experienced people, is landing during winter (Jan) a good idea? I am concerned that we may end up spending 3 months being indoors when we land because of the weather. It may make more sense to retain our jobs in Nigeria and land afterwards. I will appreciate your views please.

1. Any advantages of landing in winter?

2. Would one be able to get a job at the time or would you advise we wait until after the harsh weather?

Thank you!

Avoid landing during winter at all costs. Go to a deep freezer and stick your hand in it. Imagine trying to navigate a new country with such a weather. Respect yourself.

My wife is currently pregnant, and we are yet to get PPR.so it is obvious we will get PPR after almost wen she is about

Will I be paying all bills for her delivery. Kindly educate me so I can know how to go about it.

Research if the province you'll be landing in will give you health insurance right away. If Not, and your wife will be delivering around the time you won't have insurance, you'll have to pay out of pocket. These are your only options really.

Good morning house,
Pls I'm asking for a friend.
She will be landing in a few days and she wants to get health insurance from here for a family of 4.

Pls should she go ahead and do it from here? I think ethopian air travel insurance , heard it covers the 1st 3months after landing.

Or is there any other way to get insurance before the Canadian one kicks in (considering it takes roughly 3months)? Or should she wait till she arrives Canada? She has small kids 2& 8yrs . Although they are not sickly, but shes just trying to be cautious.

What's your take pls.?

Depends on the province she'll be living in. If the province she'll be going to requires a 3 month wait, I'd rather buy health insurance in Canada.

Hmmm...and why is that?

I learnt that there's a number of affluent Asians communities in Canada...especially in the Vancouver area of British Columbia province .

So what is the excuse of the Blacks presently living in Canada...even if their population is low?

Those blacks think and act like black Americans down south. They have a victim mentality.

There's a few affluent Asian communities in B.C. they're into money laundering from China. They don't count. Most legit Asian aren't better off than blacks.

It's like counting the Nigerians who do 419 as a affluent African group. And racism towards blacks is worse than any other visible minority group here.

You know, come to think of it...the UK is not an immigrant country as compared to the US.

I want to believe that the UK just seems to show some kind of accommodation to foreigners out of showing it in a superficial way to promote diversity.

The US on the other hand has to allow diversity because of its history and how the country came to be in existence.

A better comparison would be between the US and Canada as to why there are no affluent black communities in Canada compared to the US.

I disagree. Blacks make up 2 percent of the Canadian population and probably at best half of that 2 percent aren't even first generation. Black influence in Canada is at it's infancy. The black Americans who crossed the border during the American civil war don't count I feel.
