The Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy has been blamed for the delay in the payment of allowances and bonuses of players and coaching crew of the Dream Team VI in Rio.A statement issued by Ademola Olajire, theNigeria Football Federation (NFF) Assistant Director of Communications quoted the federation’s President Amaju Pinnick as saying so when he communicated with the team’s handler Samson Siasia, on telephone.“I just finished a long telephone discussion with Siasia and I explained to him the situation the NFF is in and why he has not received his salary.“As I explained last week, we received some money from CAF and I directed that the money be used to offset the salaries ofthe U-23 team coaches and also for the Super Falcons’ coaches.“The money has come into the NFF account but it has to first go into our Treasury Single Account (TSA) before we can access it and then use it.“The vouchers for the payment have already been done,’’ the statement quoted Pinnick as saying.It further quoted Pinnick as saying that the NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and the Minister of Sports Solomon Dalunghad also intervened at different points to explain the football house predicament to Siasia.“Siasia confirmed that before I spoke to him, the NFF General Secretary had also called him to explain the situation to him.“We are not unmindful of what our coachesare going through in this challenging period and we praise them for their patriotism and hard work despite all these.“I want to specially appreciate the Honourable Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung, who had already dispatched accountants to the U-23 team hotel to pay the allowances of players and officials before I called the team.“The Honourable Minister instructed the accountants to also pay the four alternate players, who are not accredited for the Games; we commend him for his efforts,” the statement also quoted Pinnick as saying.Dalung and Pinnick have moved quickly to douse feelings of discontent in the Nigeria U-23 team camp, ahead of Saturday’s Men’s Olympic Football Tournament quarter –final clash with Denmark.The Nigeria’s Dream Team which won the event in 1996 were scheduled to have a feel of the Arena Fonte Nova, venue of the Olympics football quarterfinal match with Denmark, on Friday evening.The Danes lost 0-4 to Brazil in their final group match on Wednesday, while Dream Team topped Group B in spite losing 0-2 toColombia in the last group game. The Youth and Sports Development Minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung will not stop stewing in controversies as membersof the Olympic football team said they have accepted his apology for their traumatizing experience in Atlanta, USA.
[b]Some members of the team revealed to Sports Vanguard that contrary to reports inNigeria that the minister visited the team inAtlanta where he reportedly asked team captain, John Mikel Obi to take charge of the team, he never visited them.“Where did he visit us? We never saw him while we were in Atlanta. I think they just issued a press release that he came to see us, we never saw,” one of them said.[\b]The source however, said that “we have accepted his apology and happy that they paid us our camp allowance for 11 days. We were in camp for more than a month in Nigeria and Atlanta so they should pay us all the allowances as well as the bonus for the two matches we have played.”Another demand by the team was the payment of the five months salary owed the coaching crew but it was not clear if that is part of the money the sports ministry or the NOC would settle as it is theresponsibility of the NFF.Meanwhile, the minister’s office said yesterday that the players were each paid$1,650 being allowances for 11 days as they are entitled to $150 daily camp allowance.According to a press statement from the minister’s office, the minister said the upfront payment was to ensure that the players are focused and well motivated as he promised that all entitlements will be begiven to all athletes even before the Games end.“All your camp allowances have been budgeted for. There will be no story-telling during these Games. You will get all your allowances and entitlements as we don’t want any distractions. We want you to remain focused . You have established thatyou’re great men and determined to conquer, despite all odds. There can’t be any other sacrifice more than this”, the press statement quoted Dalung as saying.
