The Federal Government Monday urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to issue a bench warrant for Innoson Nigeria Limited’s chairman Mr. Innocent Chukwuma and two of his employees. They were charged in a fraud case before Justice Ayokunle Faji. The Police charged them with an alleged N2.4billion shipping fraud, but the Attorney-General of the Federation later took over the case. Others named in the charge are Charles Chukwuma, Maximian Chukwura, Mitsui Osk Lines and Anajekwu Sunny. The prosecution is praying the court to order the arrest of Innoson Motors Chairman and his staff for failing to turn up to take their plea in the criminal charge. Yesterday, Chukwuma and his staff were absent. Prosecuting Counsel Mr. Julius Ajakaiye moved an application urging the court to order the absent defendants’ arrest. He said the charge was served on them through a court-ordered February 8, 2016 substituted service following the AGF’s take-over of the case. Ajakaiye said since then, the third and fourth defendants had been coming to court, while the first, second and fifth defendants “have refused, failed and neglected to appear in court till date”. Consequently, he said the defendants were yet to take their plea and should therefore be compelled to appear. He added that an April 12, 2016 amended charge could not be served on the absent defendants. Ajakaiye urged the court to grant his application by ordering their arrest. But defence counsel Chief George Uwechue (SAN) Prof. C. Mbadugha prayed the court to dismiss the application. They argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to issue the warrant against the defendants “because they were not properly before the court”. They said the application offends Order 6 of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules, adding that there was no proper service on their clients. The prosecution accused the defendants of conspiring to unlawfully falsify shipping clearance documents. They were accused of “uttering” (presenting) the allegedly falsified shipping documents as collateral to Guaranty Trust Bank Plc to allegedly obtain a loan of N2.4billion. The Federal Government claimed that the defendants committed the offence at Apapa wharf on October 10, 2013. The alleged offence is contrary to sections 1(2) (c) and 3(6) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap M17, Laws of the Federation 2004. Justice Faji adjourned until July 3 for ruling. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2019/04/15/breaking-fg-orders-arrest-of-innoson-motor-boss-two-others/ |
Car manufacturers lobby governments to limit imports of used cars – Top car manufacturing brands have identified importation of used cars as a major challenge threatening sales in Africa’s potential 3-4 million car market. At the edge of Nairobi’s Ngong Forest, thousands of used cars glitter in the hot sun on a dusty field, waiting for buyers. Imported from Japan or the Middle East, they offer an affordable route to vehicle ownership in Kenya and have dominated the market for decades. That is an obstacle big carmakers must overcome if they are to crack Africa, a market promising rapid growth as trade tensions threaten sales elsewhere. African consumers also still need conventional engines just as demand in more traditional markets is curbed by restrictions on carbon emissions. Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Nissan and others have joined forces to lobby governments for steps that would reduce the imports that have made sub-Saharan Africa notoriously difficult terrain and allow local production to flourish. “The question on Africa isn’t, ‘Is it a market of the future?’” Mike Whitfield, Nissan’s top executive for Africa, told Reuters. “It’s a case of when.” Four years after forming the Association of African Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM) their efforts are starting to bear fruit. Carmakers that set up local assembly plants could get tax holidays of up to 10 years and duty exemptions in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana, according to government plans seen by Reuters. Thomas Schaefer, who heads Volkswagen’s Africa business, said there is a potential market in sub-Saharan Africa for 3 to 4 million new cars, up from just 420,000 in 2017. But that will require addressing the well-entrenched interests of second-hand car dealers, smugglers and lowering the price of new cars. “It will largely depend on how successful the African governments are in limiting the amounts of second-hand imports and how price-competitive new vehicles can be with their tariffs,” said Craig Parker, Africa research director at Frost & Sullivan, a U.S.-based market research firm. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2019/04/12/car-manufacturers-lobby-governments-to-limit-imports-of-used-cars/ Mynd44, OAM4J |
Nigerian govt bans Boeing 737 Max planes from country’s airspace – The Nigerian federal government has banned Boeing 737 Max airplanes from flying into Nigeria’s airspace following a fatal crash in Ethiopia over the weekend. FINANCIAL WATCH gathered Hadi Sirika, minister of state, aviation, disclosed this to state house correspondents at the end of the federal executive council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari. “Regarding Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9, that has been in the news recently, there is no cause for alarm as there is no operator in Nigeria that is using that type of airplane,” he said. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, whose mandate it is to issue advisory, has already issued advisory that nobody should fly into Nigeria or out of Nigeria using Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9, pending the determination of the actual cause of the crash in Ethiopia and also pending the outcome of the response of the manufacturer, which is Messers Boeing. “Regardless of the enormous safety records of this plane 737, it has caused concern in the world of aviation and you know aviation is universal, whatever affects one affects the other because aircraft will be flying in and out. So, we have issued directive that no operator with Boeing 737 Max 8 or Max 9 should operate into and outside our airports and this is being carried out.” The 157 persons on board the ill-fated aircraft were killed. Two Nigerians: Pius Adesanmi, a professor, and Abiodun Bashua, an ex-diplomat, lost their lives in the incident. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2019/03/13/breaking-nigerian-govt-bans-boeing-737-max-planes-from-countrys-airspace/ |

Delta State deserves a power shift from PDP to APC. I am from the state and i can tell you that should PDP continue to rule, the state will be under a lot pressure to use half of her resources to fund PDP for the next 4yrs plus the "chop i chop" share the money Delta PDP is known for. Besides PDP has been rigging since 2003 and for good measure the time is ripe for them to have a taste of their own medicine! #Oteri #Ozugo #Oteno |

The national working committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has suspended Ibikunle Amosu and Rochas Okorocha, governors of Ogun and Imo states receptively, from the party, TheCable can report. The NWC has also recommended their expulsion from APC to the national executive committee (NEC). The decisions were taken at the NWC meeting on Friday afternoon in Abuja where allegations of “anti-party activities” were levelled the governors. Amosun and Okorocha were both elected senators on the platform of APC on Saturday but they are backing different candidates for the March 2 governorship election. https://ranthq.com.ng/breaking-apc-nwc-suspends-amosun-okorocha-recommends-expulsion/ OAM4J, Mynd44 |
