Nigeria moved to 144th from 148th in Transparency International latest corruption perception index worldwide, that also saw the United States dropping four notches out of the top 20 countries in the world. However, Nigeria made the four notch jump without improving its score of 27 out of a possible 100 as recorded in 2017. Africa’s most populous country is tied with Kenya, Comoros, Guatemala and Mauritania. And it is ranked better than Cameroon put at 152nd. Botswana remains Africa’s most transparent country with a ranking of 34, followed by Namibia, Mauritius and Senegal. The United States slid to 22nd in the world from 18th last year, dropping out of the top 20 countries for the first time since 2011, Transparency International said in a report that cited growing threats to democracy worldwide. The group said its latest report on business leaders’ perceptions of corruption put the United States at 71, down from 75, on a scale of 0-100. That sounds a “wake-up call” about the need to tackle conflicts of interest, undue influence of the private sector and widening gaps between rich and poor, said Zoe Reiter, the watchdog’s acting representative to the United States. “This is a red flag because it’s really part of a pattern that we’ve seen since the 2008 global financial crisis of a loss of trust … in our public institutions,” she told Reuters. “People don’t see us as having adequate mechanisms in place to fight corruption and ensure the accountability of our elected officials.” Concerns were already mounting before the election of Donald Trump, although they have been highlighted by the actions of a rich president who defied precedent to keep his personal tax affairs secret and retain his business holdings in office. “Concerns around the Trump administration are quite serious, but this has been stewing for several years,” she said. “Conflict of interest wasn’t a new problem, but it was illuminated in its glory when you have someone who is basically breaking norms.” “Trump is a symptom not a cause. His presidency is illuminating some of the problems.” Denmark and New Zealand had the best scores on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) again in 2018, scoring 88 and 87, while Somalia, Syria and South Sudan remained at the bottom, with scores of 10, 13 and 13, TI said. Overall, more than two-thirds of countries scored below 50 on the 2018 index, and the average was 43, said TI, which has more than 100 chapters worldwide. The group said only 20 countries had significantly improved their scores since 2012, including Argentina and Ivory Coast. Sixteen others, including Australia, Chile and Malta, declined significantly in the same period. The average score for EU and western European countries held steady at 66, while sub-Saharan Africa scored just 32, TI said. A score of 100 is considered “very clean”, while a score of zero is highly corrupt. TI said its analysis showed a clear link between having a healthy democracy and fighting public sector corruption, and cited declining scores for Turkey and Hungary, in connection with challenges to the rule of law and press freedoms. Hungary’s score dropped by eight points to 46 over the past five years, amid troubling developments including the forced departure of the Open Society Foundation and Central European University, founded by philanthropist George Soros, TI said. Turkey’s score dropped by nine points in the same period to a score of 41, as the country was downgraded to ‘not free’ on a democracy ranking, TI said. “Corruption is much more likely to flourish where democratic foundations are weak and … where undemocratic and populist politicians can use it to their advantage,” said Delia Ferreira Rubio, who chairs the global civil society group. https://www.financialwatchngr.com/2019/01/29/breaking-nigeria-makes-progress-in-ti-anti-corruption-ranking/ OAM4J, Mynd44 |

The fact check team at Nigeriandefender.com has spotted a report currently trending among residents of Lagos alleging Beans sellers in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State has been using sniper to preserve beans. The News Agency of Nigeria confirmed that there have been concerns among residents of Lagos over the allegation that beans sellers were using sniper to preserve the commodity. The Federal Government on Monday also confirmed the report when it declared that Nigeria is in a real crisis as a result of the use of harmful chemicals for the preservation of agricultural produce by farmers and dealers in the sector. It disclosed this following the recent discovery where a trader who sells beans was seen using a poisonous chemical, Sniper, to preserve the commodity. The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service has also expressed fear over the use of sniper in the preservation of beans. Beans sellers deny report Following the report alleging beans sellers are using dangerous substances to preserve beans, traders in Iyana-Ipaja area of Lagos State have refuted the allegation, that they are using, an insecticide, called sniper, to preserve their commodity. Beans traders aired their opinions on the alleged news of sniper when the Multimedia team of NAN visited the market. One of the traders, Mr Chigozie Okoye, said his customers had asked questions since the news of sniper as preservative went viral but it had not really affected his sales. “People come and ask questions that they are scared of buying beans these days with the news they have heard and different other things. “But I do not think it has really affected a lot. “It has not really affected a lot. “But they buy it in lesser quantities now because everybody is waiting to know what will happen,” Okoye said. On his part, Mr Isaac Ifeanyi said some customers are sceptical about purchasing beans but the integrity of the sellers overtime have kept them coming. “We have gotten a lot of complaints about the sniper stuff. “Actually, it has not really affected sales because we preserve our own (beans) very well. “We have our customers and they still come. “We do not really have complaints about the news itself. “It just borders on integrity; they want to know and be sure that we are not doing the same thing they hear in the news. “We just make sure we assure them that everything is ok,’’ Ifeanyi said. Another trader, Malam Adamu Bello, also said the allegations were lies, aimed at ruining the traders’ business. “One of my customers told me he heard some news on radio about the use of sniper as preservatives in beans but it is not true. “This is not true; they spread this news to ruin our trade. “The Malams’ pushing wheelbarrow sell at a cheaper rate than those who own shops. “Those in the shops sell costlier but those who hawk with wheelbarrows sell lesser. “They do it to ruin the hawkers’ sale but I insist the news is not true. “I can chew our beans raw without fear because there is nothing inside. “It is a lie; such preservatives are not used in our beans. “My sales have not dropped despite the news, I still make the same sales,” Bello said. Is the report true? Considering the concerns from the public and the federal government as well as Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, it is hard to dispute the authenticity of this report. The News Agency of Nigeria also confirmed that there have been concerns among residents of Lagos over the allegation. Nigeriandefender.com strongly advises consumers to use their discretion on where they buy the commodity carefully observing the product before and after buying. Although we cannot confirm authoritatively that sellers are actually using sniper to preserve beans, in the same vein we can neither dispute the report. Former Nigeria’s President Dr Goodluck Jonathan has released his book which he titled “My Transition Hours”; as expected the book is generating a lot of reactions from stakeholders across the country. The book which costs N10,500 per copy has so many facts and claims as can be expected from a book written by a former president. The fact check team at Nigeriandefender.com brings to you some disputed claims ever since the contents of Jonathan’s book were made public. Kindly note that we at Nigeriandefender.com are not making any conclusion based on what others say about some claims in the book, we are only drawing a list of stakeholders who disagree with some claims. Some of the top shots who did not agree with certain aspects of the book include politicians, ex-ministers who served under Jonathan, state governors, ex-governors and other stakeholders who are in the know of the events highlighted in the book. Some of the disputed facts are listed below: Ex-ministers who served under Jonathan says he Lied about Concession Speech According to a report published by thecable.ng, some ex-ministers who served under Goodluck Jonathan has reacted angrily to some of the claims by him in his book, ‘My Transition Hours’, released on Tuesday. While Commenting on his acclaimed concession call to President Muhammadu Buhari while the final results of the 2015 presidential election were yet to be announced, Jonathan said he rebuffed advice from ministers and an aide not to concede. Let him enjoy the euphoria of his book launch first, but those he has defamed will surely respond in due course,” the former minister said, adding that Jonathan, by his latest claims, may finally demystify himself over the concession speech “which had elevated his status internationally”. Another former minster who spoke with the TheCable but also refused to be identified described Jonathan’s version of events as “most unfair and petty”. “The impression the former president is trying to create is that the people came to tell him not to concede. In truth, Jonathan was being persuaded by a former south-south governor not to concede, so some ministers were quickly invited to come and counter the plot,” the former minister said. “What would Okonjo-Iweala, Adoke and Chidoka be doing at the villa at that time if not that something was going wrong? Is Jonathan trying to say he was not involved in Elder Godsday Orubebe’s attempt to disrupt the announcement of the results? Is Jonathan trying to claim innocence of a plot to secure a court injunction to stop INEC from further announcing the results? Jonathan needs to be a man of honour.” Borno State governor, Ibrahim Shetima called the book An Elementary Book of Fiction The governor who is in the center of the insurgence in the North-East completely disagreed with the whole book which he described as “An Elementary Book of Fiction”. He said the book, ‘My Transition Hours,’ by the former president was a clever attempt to sweep incontrovertible facts on the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls under the carpet. He also tongue-lashed the former president, who in the book among other allegations, says Shettima and the rest of the All Progressives Congress conspired in the kidnapping of the Chibok schoolgirls. Shettima said it was clear to him after reading the former president’s book, that “he still lives with poor understanding of issues under his presidency.” You can read more about this story on a story published by the punch titled “Jonathan’s My Transition Hours an elementary book of fiction –Borno gov”. Jonathan’s book omitted probe panel report on Chibok abduction – Shettima Again Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, more specifically accused former President Goodluck Jonathan of cleverly omitting in his book, an investigative report on the April 14, 2014, Chibok abduction submitted to him in June by the presidential facts-finding committee constituted in May. According to him, this is a clever way, by the former President, to sweep under the carpet incontrovertible facts surrounding the abduction. Shettima spoke in reaction to allegations contained in chapter four, titled “The Chibok school girls affair” in the book, My Transition Hours, authored by Jonathan and launched on Tuesday in Abuja. The former President had indicated that the schoolgirls’ abduction was a product of conspiracy by the then opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in connivance with Borno State government. He also accused the Borno government and then President Barack Obama’s administration in the United States of undermining efforts to rescue the Chibok girls in 2014. However, Governor Shettima, in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Communications and Strategy, Malam Isa Gusau, yesterday, said while the truth was that Jonathan never believed there was an abduction until rescue efforts were late, the former President’s book fell short of the courage required of him to publish findings by his own panel in chapter four of his book. This claim is published on Vanguard Newspapers. Yoruba group disagrees with Jonathan on state of economy A Yoruba group, “The Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum” disagreed with former President Goodluck Jonathan on his assessment of the current state of the nation’s economy in his book ‘My Transition Hours’. The forum says the economy is better under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The Yoruba Socio-Cultural group expressed its reservation to Jonathan’s allegation in a statement signed by Akin Malaolu, its Secretary-General on Wednesday. According to Mr Malaolu, such claims should be completely ignored. “Ex-President Jonathan’s claim that the present leadership of the country under Buhari has worsened the condition of things for Nigeria and Nigerians should be ignored completely because they are false and inaccurate. “During the last administration, our foreign reserve stood at 22 billion dollars when the price of a barrel of crude oil was above 100 dollars per barrel. “That is a clear indicator that Ex-President Jonathan was present but wholly absentminded in savings. “Today, our foreign reserve stands at almost 50 billion dollars even at a time the price of crude oil was below 50 dollars per barrel. “As crude oil recently appreciated in price, there is positive desire on the part of Buhari government to make the nation better and steady by bringing back investors who fled the country,” he said. You can read the rest of the story as published by premium times with the caption “Book Launch: Yoruba group disagrees with Jonathan on state of economy” The Arewa Consultative Forum says Jonathan’s claims on 2015 election odd The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) described as odd the statement credited to former President Goodluck Jonathan that northern leaders and socio-political groups worked against his ambition in 2015. The national publicity secretary of the forum, Muhammad Ibrahim Biu, in a statement on Wednesday said it’s on record that Jonathan contested the 2011 and 2015 against the zoning arrangement of his party that zoned the presidential slot to the North. The ACF spokesman said Jonathan’s assertions that Northern leaders and socio-political groups in the North worked against his presidency is rather odd, considering the circumstances at that time. “Yet he won the Presidency in 2011 and the ruling party also secured 25% in some states of the North in the 2015 presidential elections. “It may interest you to know that his party has since admitted the oversight in the party’s 2015 winning game plan. This clearly means that leaders should always honour their words with deeds if they want to earn the respect of their followers,” he stated. This is published on Daily Trust with the caption “ACF reacts to Jonathan’s book launch, says comment on 2015 odd” Nigeriandefender.com will be monitoring the reactions as more facts come in. Last Sunday the independent national electoral commission, INEC declared campaign open for candidates contesting in 2019 general election; as politicians device means of convincing electorates for votes, sometimes lies are been told which in turn generate a lot of false reports. The fact check team at Nigeriadefender.com will be monitoring the words of politicians to separate truth from lies. Nigeria Defender recently spotted a false claim by the candidate of the people’s Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar when he allegedly said he grew up as an orphan in a bid to relate well with the poor masses. Did Atiku actually say he grew up as orphan? Various sources reported that the former vice president said he grew up as an orphan selling firewood, according to Pulse.ng, Presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, highlighted his rags-to-riches story as he unveiled his plan to fix Nigeria if elected. “I started out as an orphan selling firewood on the streets of Jada in Adamawa, but God, through the Nigerian state, invested in me and here I am today”, Atiku said in a 9-minute broadcast that was streamed live on Facebook. “If Nigeria worked for me, I owe it as my duty to make sure that Nigeria also works for you,” he said. The report was also published by thecable.ng as well as other top media houses. Did Atiku really grow up as orphan? According to Wikipedia, “Atiku Abubakar was born on November 25, 1946 to a Fulani trader and farmer Garba Abubakar, and his second wife, Aisha Kande, in Jada village of Adamawa State. Atiku Abubakar became the only child of his parents when his only sister died at infancy. Atiku’s father and mother divorced before his father died in 1957 and his mother remarried. Eventually, his mother died in 1984 of heart attack”. This was also mentioned in his 2013 book titled “MY LIFE”, page 30 of the book confirmed his mother died in 1984. Atiku is about 72yrs now, this means that he was already 38yrs old when his mother passed away. Why does it matter? Does it really matter if Atiku grew up as orphan? Ordinarily it doesn’t matter, but it matters now because he falsely claimed it to be so. Fake news begins with a single lie and if not nipped in the bud it metamorphoses into widespread misinformation and that is why our fact check team at Nigeriadefender.com is waging a war against fake news.
