Indeed, he confessed his personal reluctance to take over because of his ignorance of government; but insisted the boys were adamant and anxiously waiting outside.“Surprisingly, there was no stationery to write the agreement; and all the offices were locked while no official was around. Alhaji AGF Abdulrazaq, the Minister of State for the Railways (former NPC legal adviser), managed to secure a scrap paper on which he drafted a statement, which we endorsed. That was the so-called voluntary hand-over of power by the Balewa Government to Major General Ironsi! It was agreed that the statement would be typed and Dipcharima would sign it on our behalf. We were then asked to return home and await further instructions. I only got to break my Ramadan fast around 9.30p.m.”

THE REAL CHIEF OPE BADEMOSI YOU SHOULD KNOW

Ordinarily I wouldn’t have shared this story, but because the victim, Chief Ope Bademosi is gone I want to make certain secret disclosures to stave off future ugly occurrences. Since I left Nigeria for the United States in the 1990s, it took me almost ten years to visit my native land. I visited Nigeria again in 2010 for a project which involved the Jonathan Administration. In the course of meeting some prominent Nigerians, a pastor friend of mine introduced Chief Ope Bademosi to me. He was a Chief from Ondo City and I being from Owo in the same state, we hit it off so to say. He agreed to the business proposal we discussed and we met at a highbrow hotel in Abuja to perfect all the paperwork with our corporate attorneys present to tidy up the legal ends.

The first time I met Chief Ope, he was a nice man but lived a reckless life. He was with two prostitutes the very night I met him in Abuja. I expressed my dislike to his lifestyle, but my pastor friend said we should rather concentrate on the business instead of the man’s lifestyle. The second thing this man did was highly dishonest and dishonorable. He issued us a check for the sum of N50m- Fifty Million- in 2010 and assured us everything was fine. He introduced himself as an executive director of Wema Bank and we checked him out and we found that to be true because he had his picture and bio displayed on the banks website. More so, he was a product of the prestigious University of Lagos where I also graduated from and so took him for his words. To ensure we were into legitimate business, myself and my American business partners agreed we should use Wema Bank as our corresponding financial institution in Nigeria.

Folks, Chief Ope gave us a dud check. The so-called Chief Lotin of Ondo scammed us. He had no money in his account at Wema Bank even as an executive director. The man was a fraud. When we discovered his shady character, I called my pastor friend on what to do. We called Chief Ope and he became incoherent. I asked him why did he behave like that, he became defensive. Anyway, to cut the long story short, I was compelled to place a heavy curse on him. I lost all my investment in that deal and had to take care of my American biz partners who insisted we should involve the Nigerian
Police. Chief Ope Bademosi boasted that he was a big shot and a political honcho in Nigeria and threatened nothing would happen to him. I told him that I have placed a heavy curse on him and he would end his life violently and disastrously. He laughed it off.

This man was a womanizer, a morally debased man. Every Friday, he would leave Lagos for Ondo City and it would be fornication, sexual escapades and adulterous activities till Monday morning when he would return to Lagos. His wife or wives knew about his shambolic moral degeneration but I guess in Nigeria, morality is such at a terrible and ear-splitting discount that anything goes. As my American biz partners told him, if it were to be here in America, Chief Ope would have been in jail right now.

I wasn’t taken aback the least when I read his death and the way he was cut down. He had his just and well-deserved comeuppance. And by the way, I still have a copy of the dud check he issued to my company with me here in Texas. Chief Ope bit the dust and he finally went to where he eternally belongs at the age of 67. His death or murder should serve as dire warning to those Nigerians who think they can step rough shod on others and get away with their atrocities. The law of retribution as laid down by the True Lord God Almighty has not been abrogated.

It was Oje who stopped him. “ Mr President, I think we’ve run into a snag. Maybe it would be better if you heard it directly from the horse’s mouth.” Still unsuspecting, Babangida turned to me. Oh, Professor, I am sure we can sort out whatever difficulties there are. Is the Stockholm date clashing with ours?” I studied him very carefully, eyes glued to every gesture and motions of his hands and face. This was perhaps the most absurd test I ever set myself, attempting to decide, even within those first seconds, whether I was seated before an unconscionable killer, or simply an innocent drawn into some fatal survival struggle that had been engineered by his subordinates. This was a soldier to whom killing was no stranger, a schemer who had had a hand in several coup d’ etat………………………………… “Yes, Professor? Is there anything we can do from here to sort out the problem?” I kept my eyes on me, my voice dispassionate (I hoped) as I said, “I’ m afraid things have gone beyond any solution. First University Degree in relevant fields (in Insurance, Actuarial Science, Statistics, Economics or any other numerate degree).
Advanced knowledge and practical experience with Underwriting and Statistical methods for data analysis;
4-5 Years of experience in a similar role;
Relevant work experience in the Insurance and/or Reinsurance industry will be an added advantage.

D. MAIN COMPETENCIES REQUIRED FOR THIS POSITION:

ATIKU AND $5,000 - A ROMANCE WHICH BEGAN IN 1999.

By the constitution, I had to inaugurate or prorogue the National Assembly on June 4 1999. The most important officer in the National Assembly is the Senate President and that office had been zoned to the South East. And here was where Atiku Abubakar, my Vice President, first showed his hand and his character. Without seeking my view or aoproval, he started planning the installation of Chuba Okadigbo as the Senate President. I did a background check on Chuba including his past as a student and made enquiries about hin in the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) under Shagari and no one would recommend him for the post of Senate President. I left Atiku toho on his chase while I carried out a meticulous and detailed investigation and background check on each Senator from the South East. The one that appeared most appointable was Evan Enwerem. I canvassed the Senate across the board for his election and he was elected. Atiku did not expect it and he felt sore. He bagan to strategise for Enwerem to be removed and Chuba Okadigbo to be installed. His strategy worked because I was at Abuja airport to receive a visiting Head of State when news reached me that the Senate had mpeached Enwerem and elected Okadigbo. I was not perturbed. I came to understand from some Senators including Florence Ita Giwa, who later became my Special Adviser/ Liaison Officer to the National Assembly, that Atiku distributed US$5,000 each to some Senators to carry out the "coup". That was the beginning of bribing the legislature to carry out a particular line of action to suit or satisfy the purpose or desire of an individual or group. The National Assembly had tasted blood and they would continue to want more. From the day I nominated Atiku to be my Vice; he set his mind not for any good, benefit or service of the country, but on furiously planning to upstage, supplant or remove me at all costs and to take my place. That was what I brought him for, but he was impatient and over ambitious. He was not ready to learn and to wait. Pity!

His marabout, who predicted that despite being elected as Governor, he would not be sworn in as a Governor, which happened, also assured him that he would take over from me in a matter of months rather than years. All his plans, appointments of people and his actions were towards actualusation of his marabout's prediction. Once, I realised his intention and programme, I watched him like a hawk without giving any indication of what I knew and letting down my guard. I could not succumb to the distraction, diversion and malevolence of an ambitious but unwise deputy.

“Germany is a highly industrialised country. In such a country, many will think its people lead a luxurious life. When we arrived at Hamburg, my colleagues and I walked into a restaurant where we noticed that a lot of tables were empty. There was a particular table where a young man and woman were having their meal. There were only two dishes and two cans of beer on the table. I wondered if such simple meal could be romantic, and whether the lady would not eventually leave this stingy guy. There were a few old ladies on another table as I continued to make my observation. When a dish is served, the waiter would distribute the food for them, and they would finish every bit of the food on their plates.

“As we were hungry, our local colleague ordered more food for us and by the time we were done eating, there was still about one third of unconsumed food on our table. But as we were about leaving the restaurant, the old ladies spoke to us in English, making it very clear that they were displeased about the fact that we were wasting so much food. ‘We paid for our food, it is none of your business how much food we left behind,’ my colleague who hosted us told the old ladies who appeared to be furious.
“At that point, one of them brought out her mobile phone and made a call to someone. Interested in what she was doing since we committed no crime, we tarried a while. Not long after, a man in uniform, apparently from a social security outfit given his uniform arrived. Upon knowing what the dispute was, he issued us a 50 Euro fine.

“When we asked for what our offence was, the officer told us in a very stern voice, ‘always order only what you can consume. The money you spend is yours but resources belong to the society. There are many people in the world who are facing shortage of resources so you have no reason to waste resources.”

Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, remains one of the most focussed public administrators Nigeria has ever had. On Thursday, he became the first governor to present his 2019 budget, giving priority attention to education and health. He pledged that his administration would complete all the projects it started and pay up all its contractual obligations before the end of the year. I also remember that he was the first to nominate commissioners in 2015 — even attaching their CVs and portfolios to the list he sent to the house of assembly. You may not be a fan of his politics but you cannot deny that he understands how government should run. Kudos!
