PhonesYou Should Never Sell Or Recycle An Old Cell Phone by mcevans1(op): 1:28pm On Aug 27, 2012
I recently read an article that proclaimed you should never sell or recycle an old cell phone. It was based on a security researcher who said it is incredibly easy to get personal information off of a phone, making identity theft and credit card fraud a snap. But when you can get upwards of $100 for an old smartphone, and the environmental impact of recycling is so positive.

The standard recommendation for getting rid of an old phone is to do a factory reset first. This restores all the original controls, deletes added apps, and supposedly wipes the phone clean of data. But is this good enough? To find out, I started with three old phones: my own iPhone 3GS, a used Droid, and a used Samsung feature phone. I did a factory reset on the Droid and the iPhone (you can find this option under Settings). The feature phone we used didn't offer that option, so instead I tried to manually delete as much info as I could.

At this point, I mailed the phones to forensic computer analyst Steve Burgess. He used a variety of programs to try and pull info off each phone — and the results were mixed.

iPhones
On the iPhone, all the personal data was unrecoverable, Steve explained: "With an iPhone, when you do a factory reset, it removes all of the encryption keys, which is the same as wiping it, unless you have something like a supercomputer." Steve says he tried a number of programs to get around the encryption, but was unable to extract anything.

Blackberries
Blackberries also possess superior security features, and Steve says that once reset and left for 30 days, the data is definitively gone.

Android Phones
For the Droid phone, the data was much easier to access. Hitting the factory reset on phones running the Android operating system doesn't technically remove or write over data stored on the phone. It just masks the location of that data. Steve explained that with forensic software or some basic hacking skills, that data could be accessed. One other security issue is the SD card in many of these phones; the card is the most vulnerable point for information harvesting. These cards can be erased, but widely available software can easily pull up much of the 'erased' data. At a minimum, Steve recommends pulling the SD cards from any phones you sell or recycle.

Feature Phones

For feature phones, the issues are a little more complex. To access deleted data, the phone has to be physically connected to a computer. As anyone who's tried to do this can tell you, many feature phones have proprietary cables, so finding the right one is the first complication. Sure, a thief could scour eBay to find the correct cable, but this extra hurdle may make it less likely for identity thieves to bother.

But if the new owner of your feature phone is successful connecting it to the computer, Steve tells us that extracting data with forensic software is usually possible. On the other hand, feature phones often hold much less data — just contacts, call duration, and texts. These are not the treasure troves of mobile banking info, passwords, and email that today's smartphones are.

Forensic Expert's Bottom Line
"If you've got a million dollar credit limit, and Homeland Security information, and naked pictures of your girlfriend or boyfriend, then you may not want to get rid of that phone." But for the rest of us… "I'd say if you do a factory reset on your phone and take out the SIM card and take out the SD card, that you're probably fine. The guy on the other end is probably not going to find much of anything. He's probably not going to be a forensics guy. And even if he is a forensics guy, it can be pretty tough to get stuff off of phones because there are such a variety of them."

Any Nigerian who stays in Bauchi State for seven years or more becomes an indigene of the state with all attendant rights and privileges, Governor
Isa Yuguda assured yesterday as he vowed to uphold the provision of the Nigerian Constitution which confers such rights on non-indigenous inhabitants of states in the country.

Speaking during a courtesy visit, the Governor boldly declared that there are no non-indigenes or settlers in Bauchi State because even those who have not stayed for up to seven years in the state are regarded as being “in transition” to indigenous status.

PoliticsBoko Haram Denies Dialogue With Govt by mcevans1(op): 4:18pm On Aug 24, 2012
Maiduguri — The Jama'atu Ahlis Sunnati Lidda'awati Wal Jihad, aka Boko Haram, has debunked reports that it has accepted to dialogue with the Federal Government, and wondered why the media was giving publicity to what it described as unfounded claims.

A statement signed by Abul-Qaqa, which was emailed to newsmen, said the group recognized only two attempted dialogue offers in 2011 even though both of them failed midway.

The moves, according to the group, include the time it sent one of its leaders Abu Dardaa for talks with government agents, but was arrested by security forces in Kaduna, while the second time was when the group was approached by Dr. Ibrahim Datti Ahmed through an Abuja based freelance journalist. Qaqa said any other claim that the group was approached by anybody or group is not true and warned media organizations against conspiring with government officials to mislead the public.

"There is no difference between those who fight us with guns and those who fight us with their tongues and pens. All of them are our enemies and we would not be merciful in dealing with them. This is a very important, it is a response to the news we heard in the media alluding to the fact that we (members of the group) have renewed dialogue talks with the Federal Government. We want to use this opportunity to send strong warning to the following: The first group is the media (both print and electronic). We want to remind them that the reason why we earmarked some media houses for attacks, including Thisday is because they have not been fair to us and are extremely critical about our cause of promoting Islam," the group said.

coninse: I live in Malaysia and I want you guys to know that Asians are f**king racist. They don't want you near them. If you enter a lift, they prefer you go alone in that lift. They will cover their nose immediately they see you. Their media always portrait black Africans as animal, criminal and poor. You'll never read anything positive about Africa in their media. They are bloody racist, I tell you. I read a newspaper couple of weeks ago where one of their Minister stated that "our economy growth may be slow but we are not hungry like Africans". I was so mad when I read this.

If you are dating any Asian lady in that country, you are in poo. Just looking at their faces on street, you will know they are not happy with you. They want you dead!

There are a lot to write about but to cut long story short, ASIANS ARE F**KING PIGS AND RACIST. The best thing for Africans is to develop our continent. If we do this, nobody will care about those ignorant racists.

tweener: I'd say nigeria, especially lagosians...becauz a typical lagosian especially us yorubas would treat an hausa man like trash,nd dat is actually tribalism, but i tink dat racism and tribalism r d same.
Personally i think tribalism and racism are two very different things but some beg to differ
TravelRe: What Are The Most RACIST Countries? by mcevans1(op): 3:04pm On Aug 22, 2012
1) Considering that both are negative, what is the exact difference between racism and tribalism? use simple words only.

the main difference is that of slavery which happened over 400 years ago. slavery has ended but mentally people are still being enslaved.tribalism however says that one tribe is inferior to another but the person is still acknowledged as a Nigerian for the common good.

2) Nigerians are racist: true or false?

some nigerians can be racist just like any other people but largely i would say no. its hard to be racist in a country where u are part of the minority. u wont get far

3) Nigerians are tribalistic: This one is true, but I am an exception. If you believe that Nigerians are not tribalistic, let me hear your reason.

i agree with you here but its not entirely our fault. it was as reason of being jumbled together when the white men came to africa. a country that has over 300 languages[and dialects] has to have friction as the beliefs, norms, ideas and all intertwined.in the UK it happens as well. the english look down on the Scots and vice-versa

4) Can you be racist without being tribalistic and vice versa? pls give an example.

it is possible for a black man to hate all white men but embrace all black people regardless of where they are from. no example springs to mind.

5) I believe religion is highly responsible in this tribalistic wahala, what do you think?

as i said earlier it resulted from jumbling different cultures together and calling it Nigeria. religion or an interpretation of religion may have added but it isnt the principal cause. Even the British when leaving also passed the mantle to the Hausa's and made them the ruling class.till 2012 it is still the case.

claremont: The OP asked for countries where racism is rife, I wonder how and why some people on here are mentioning Nigeria. How can a Negro race be racist against its own kith and kin?!
Just so you know, racism can only occur between two different races, and NOT WITHIN an individual race!

If you want to argue about Tribalism and Ethnicity in Nigeria, you can go ahead and argue about it; those are issues very different and separate from an argument on racism.
I am beginning to wonder as well. I wasn't talking about Tribalism and Ethnicity in Nigeria.
