Religion / Re: Lee Rigby Murder Trial: Michael Adebolajo 'a Soldier Of Allah' by McLuhan(m): 10:23pm On Dec 09, 2013
My dear brother, he actually said so. He said Allah asked him to do it and that he is a soldier of Allah. He expressed his love and admiration for Al-Qaeda operatives, who apparently are very nice people engaged in God's work. He stated matter-of-factly how he hit Rigby with a car and then got out and dutifully hacked him to death. He also indicated willingness to do it again if given the opportinity. But you can bet that this story will never make the frontpage on Nairaland. It is politically incorrect to publicise such news. If you do, you risk offending people who prefer to live in denial. So, don't tell anybody even though CNN, BBC, Aljazeera, Sky News, and all the world's major news media have reported it.

This is not news. I don't need anyone to tell me that Jonathan's government reeks of corruption. For me, this administration cultivates, nurtures, fertilizes, harvests, packages, and distributes corruption. What annoys me is that a member of the National Assembly is the one complaining - a Speaker of the House of Reps for that matter! Talk of a pot calling a kettle black. Who does not know that the National Assembly is one of the bastions of corruption in Nigeria? Heck, the racketeering that goes on there would put Sodom and Gomorrah to shame. Is there any confirmation of appointment or appropriation process that passes without money - I mean millions or billions of it - passing under the table? What about the obscene salaries and bogus allowances that they pay themselves? Is that not corruption? Is there any (dis)Honourable Member or (criminally) Distinguished Senator who does not earn higher wages than President Obama does? Please Sir, tell me another story. All of you are thieves, yourself and Jonathan included. Just wait for the day of reckoning, which is coming soon.

Don't you understand? The 'religion of peace' cannot harbour terrorists, neither do Muslims kill people. Some Christians just pretend to be Muslims and cut off people's heads, shouting 'Allahu akbar' while doing so. But they are not Muslims. You can't call members of Boko Haram Muslims, nor can you point to Islam as the motivation for these acts of violence, because Muslims have not been known in recent times or in the past to have killed people in the name of religion. Even Osama bin Laden was a peaceable easy-going farmer who was framed by America and accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks. Same applies to Farooq Abdul Muttallab, the innocent Nigerian lad wrongly called 'the underpants bomber'. He never intended to hurt anyone but was betrayed into the hands of the Americans by the Nigerian government. Furthermore, there is not one verse of the Quran that admonishes Muslims to fight against infidels, none, not one. Every verse speaks peace and blessing to all people regardless of faith. And, for your information, Prophet Mohammed(PBUH) was as gentle as a dove, and never killed or ordered the killing of anybody, never! So stop blaming Islam for Boko Haram.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Is Islam The Most Discriminated Religion In The World? by McLuhan(m): 6:55pm On Nov 29, 2013
AceLove: Today, of all the major religions of the world, Islam seems to be the most violent. The tortoise once said in a fable - 'I have learned that he who makes trouble for others, also makes trouble for himself'. This doesn't justify the stereotype and discrimination, but it does give a reason. I really pity the good Muslims who must prove their religion is not what a few has made it seem.
When adherrents of a particular religion storm a shopping mall and ask people who belong to their own religion to leave peacefully, while they proceed to massacre people of other faiths, one does not need a soothsayer to know that people will naturally despise such a religion!

How does this concern Gov. Akpabio? Aren't you aware that Uniuyo is a federal university? Should Akpabio have stopped the Uniuyo Governing Council from doing its job? Or is it Akpabio that imposed the levy?

Anyway, let's just hope that the circumstances that led to this surcharge will not recur. Meanwhile, my thoughts are continually with the family of the student who died during the fracas. I also pity the innocent indigent students who will have to find money and pay this compulsory surcharge. That is the unfortunate part of students' riots: the innocent ones also suffer the consequences.

Sacked? What will happen to the army of hangers-on who saw the Special Assistant as their conduit to the national feeding trough? What of her kinsmen and women who paid for newspaper advertisements and led delegations to thank the President for appointing a "daughter of the soil" to such an exalted office? Nigeria is indeed a joke, a country of warped morals where patronage is exalted above performance and ethnicity trumps excellence, a country where public office holders would rather die than resign.

Sometimes I wonder if Nigerians were created with a special capacity for self-delusion and absurdity. This is the first time in the world where an organisation charged with protecting civilians and assisting them in cases of natural disaster, war, or other emergencies, voluntarily abdicates that responsibity and constitutes itself into a prayer house for the purpose of prayer and fasting! Unbelievable! I wonder what churches will now do.

mediocre players everywhere. Mba that struggles in the club he plays is now one of Africa's best??
LOL
Truly, no Nigerian player of the current generation is as skillful as Jay Jay Okocha was in his heyday. That Okocha was denied the CAF African Player of the Year Award is one of the greatest injustices in the history of sports. Nobody can convince me that Moustafa Hadji, who won it in 1998, was a better player than Okocha. To my mind, no other African player has ever exhibited the same level of artistry that Okocha displayed - and with such consummate ease. For that reason, the yearly award ritual always rings hollow to me.

Unblockable: This' a good idea, because we are already aware that some political parties have sewn some fake military uniforms, which they would use to cause havoc on saturday.

The gallant soldiers should be able to know themselves, and the corps' members should also be able to recognize themselves.

The election should be a free and fair election, so that the usual people will not cry foul after the Ngige has been declared the winner, because we do not want any election higgledy-piggledy.

APC is known for their angelic behaviour during elections. Kudos to Ngige as he's returned elected come saturday
Is this a joke or what? Which Nigerian political party has ever been known for "angelic behaviour"? Who are the angels in APC? Is it Tinubu or is it Ikimi? I see nothing but thieves and looters, whether in APC or PDP or APGA or whatever. Quote me: there is not one politician contesting the Anambra gubernatorial elections who is not in it for his own pocket.
Politics / Re: Soldiers Are Terrorising Citizens In Agbor, Delta State. by McLuhan(m): 9:46am On Nov 14, 2013
Instead of terrorising Boko Haram militants, they are terrorising innocent civilians. Rubbish! It is only in Nigeria that soldiers leave their barracks and roam the streets with horsewhips, expecting motorists to clear the streets so they can drive around unhindered and daring anyone to utter a word in protest. Against the acceptable practice all over the world, Nigerian soldiers even arrest and detain civilians! They make a habit of preying on policemen, fighting them at every opportunity and killing them at the slightest provocation. They frequently clash with members of the other armed forces as well, as if they are enemy combatants at the warfront. Except government calls these errant soldiers to order, our society will became more and more lawless.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Lionel Messi Sidelined For Two Months With Hamstring Injury by McLuhan(m): 5:23pm On Nov 11, 2013
Jenkizo: Christiano Ronaldo is a better and complete striker to Messi anytime anyday though FIFA have been playing bias umpire all along by sentimentally handpicking Messi as world best which Sepp Blater recently admitted. That been said, if Messi and Christiano can exchange clubs, messi might not score up to 20 league goals in R Madrid but CR7 may end up scoring 100 league goals for Barca in a season. Barca is a collection of talents. CR7 should be voted the best in the game in 2013. Messi won world best when spainish team and Inter-milan won FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League respectively. CR7 deserve the prize.

You are right! Anyone who has followed world football for some time will agree that there is a lot of politics in the game. That Messi won the best player award ahead of Sneijder in 2010 was surely a travesty of justice. It is equally unbelievable that he was more deserving of the honour than Iniesta and Xavi, the two most illustrious pillars of the Spanish World Cup-winning team.

Are you suggesting, by any means, that you are more educated than he is? Or are you equating English language proficiency with intelligence? Aren't you aware that even native speakers of a language sometimes suffer the occasional slip of the tongue? I studied in universities in the UK (Exeter, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne) and the US (UC-Berkeley). I lived in the UK between the ages of three and 26 and in the US for about five years thereafter. So I should know what I'm talking about. If you are trying to discredit ASUU, think of some other arguments because, quite frankly, you are not competent to speak about matters of grammar.

Olumidzti: how many days do your senators sit per week? & how much do they get? Some people are so 'wise' they'll fight against people stealing hundreds from them & defend people stealing billions.
Nigeria is a hopeless country full of hopeless people. Have we bothered to ask Senator David Mark what he does to deserve the N88 million monthly basic pay he receives as Senate President? Since Punch newspapers reported the said amount as part of their exposé on the outrageous salaries earned by Nigerian legislators, has David Mark refuted those allegations? Have Nigerians been able to force a downward review of those scandalous, world-record salaries? When did Nigerians stage a serious demonstration to protest the unprecedented looting that is currently taking place in all - take note, ALL - the levels of government in this country? Politicians are stealing the nation blind, looting our coffers and mocking us as well, and all we can do is begrudge our university lecturers, the most learned people in our society, of the pittance that government pays them. "Why can't they return to their wretched classrooms and teach their God-forsaken students?" we ask. Well, sorry, the lecturers have said for once that they won't continue with the charade that our government misnames "university education". They are telling government: "Implement the agreement you signed, an agreement that can begin to salvage our universities. But if you insist that you won't implement the said agreement, then take note that no amount of blackmail by clueless market women or intimidation by zombie policemen or calumny from gullible members of the public can make us return to our glorified secondary schools!"

Politics / Do You Want Nigeria To Continue? by McLuhan(m): 5:11pm On Oct 30, 2013
Let's be frank: Sometimes I get tired of Nigeria. Well, that may be an understatement, for there are people who say they are sick of the country and that the place sucks. (Pardon the language, but some folks hold very strong views about this issue).

So, in the light of the proposed National Conference and the many contradictions inherent in Nigeria's corporate existence today, would you subscribe to Nigeria's continued existence as one indivisible entity? Or would you like the country to be balkanised like the former Yugoslavia? If yes, how do you think this should be done? If no, do you think the country can long survive as it is? What, or who, can save us? Share your candid views. No insults please!
Politics / Re: Governor Aliyu Pulls-out Of New Pdp by McLuhan(m): 4:54pm On Oct 29, 2013
First of all, I must note that this story is not exactly an epitome of good journalism. In my opinion, it is rather speculative, almost conjectural. No substantive source is named for the information volunteered in the story. Therefore, I think one should take it with a pinch of salt.

However, I have always viewed the purported creation of the New PDP as the huffing and puffing of disgruntled politicians, and their statements as the cackling of hens over a trough of maize. The idea that the seven dissenting governors are progressives bent on saving Nigeria is complete hogwash. Anyone who believes that the governors' motives are altruistic is either deluded or disingenuous.

Consequently, the argument as to who between the PDP and the opposition is more corrupt is irrelevant. It is like asking which wild animal between a tiger and a lion one would prefer to have as a pet. Tinubu as leader of Nigeria's ruling party would be just as corrupt as Jonathan - or even moreso! Amaechi as vice-president is a recipe for the most audacious and arrogant form of swaggering thievery! Is there any Nigerian governor today (whether from PDP, APC, APGA, or whatever) who would pass an impartial test of financial probity? So what are we debating here?

If we really want a change, we must begin to imagine the type of country we want. And then we must strive to found that nation of our dreams. We do not yet have such a nation. Our country is today wracked by the forces of corruption, ethnicity, and religious violence. We must resist these forces individually and collectively. And when we see mediocrity, we must be bold enough to call it what it is, whether it is exhibited by our brother or by someone else.

Dear friend, we have nothing to lose by seeking the assistance of countries whose security apparatuses are more advanced than ours. For so long we have been grappling with the menace of Boko Haram. Anything that can help rid us of this scourge is, in my opinion, fair game. As a matter of fact, I believe that religious fundamentalism and its attendant evils constitute the greatest challenge to global peace in the 21st century. To combat this threat, governments all over the world will need to overcome their differences and cooperate with each other in intelligence gathering, in judicial processes and the prevention of impunity, and in social work aimed at de-indoctrinating and de-radicalising former jihadists and fundamentalists. I only hope world leaders will appreciate the urgency of the situation.

While I can relate to the poster's comments, I cannot fail to note with dismay the depth to which our country's stock has sunk internationally, a fact exemplified by the barely disguised disdain with which many countries in Africa and elsewhere now treat our nationals. Why do they heap such contempt on us? They do so because:

1) In trying to flee from our politically inflicted poverty, our compatriots have become economic immigrants in places that once begged alms from Nigeria.

2) Nigerians are a garrulous and loquacious brood of noisemakers who, having become acculturated to a system of noisy dysfunction, cannot easily adjust to a serene normalcy.

3) Our repute - or disrepute - goes ahead of us. Nigerians are among the most religious people on earth, but some of them - I daresay, many of them - will not hesitate to fleece an unsuspecting business partner (a "maga" or "mugu" in the language of advance free fraud). They will then rationalise such crimes by claiming it is God's favour.

4) Nigeria boasts many exceptional talents in diverse fields. Think about the Soyinkas, the Achebes, the Kanus, the Okochas, etc. But we also boast some of the world's greatest evil genuises: people who have pulled off the most heinous credit card scams in living memory, political leaders who have stolen entire annual budgets, presidents who have ordered the massacre of whole villages and communities, and so on and so forth.

5) Last but not least, Nigeria continues to struggle with minor problems that other countries had long overcome. Today, Nigeria is among the three countries in the world where polio, the childhood killer disease, is still endemic. The others, Pakistan and Afghanistan, are countries that are either emerging from war or have suffered protracted instability. Electricity supply in Nigeria, like most other public utilities, is an unending lamentation. And then of course there is the emerging monster popularly called Boko Haram.

In short, it is amazing that other countries still issue visas to Nigerians. There is no other country on earth that holds greater promise but that has worked as hard to wreck that promise.

Don't pick and choose the quranic injunctions that you like. Consider the entire Quran and the hadiths holistically. Doesn't the Quran encourage Muslims to fight with unbelievers wherever they are found? Are violent Muslim jihadists not taught to expect 72 virgins in paradise? Can you mention any other religion today that produces as many suicide bombers as Islam does? Can you confidently say that the Taliban who recently shot Malala Yousafzai for promoting girls' education were not Muslims? Please stop trying to deceive people. All over the world, people are beginning to realise what Islam stands for, that is if they didn't know before.
