Politics / Islamist Group Orders Female Genital Mutilation For All Women by McLuhan(m): 2:22pm On Jul 24, 2014
The United Nations says the militant Islamist group Isis has ordered all women and girls in Mosul, northern Iraq, to undergo female genital mutilation (FGM).

FGM is defined by the World Health Organisation as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female organs or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons." The health effects can include recurrent infections, chronic pain, cysts, an inability to get pregnant, complications during childbirth and fatal bleeding.

The UN General Assembly had approved a resolution in December 2012 calling on all member states to ban the practice.

One can only hope that Boko Haram, the ideological cousins of Isis, will not implement a similiar fatwa on the Chibok girls and in the villages and towns where they have recently hoisted their flag. May God help us!

After the shooting down of the M17 Malaysian airliner in Ukraine on Thursday, I am glad that the world has not woken up to another aviation tragedy today. Nowadays the news bulletins seem to consist of one tragic event after the other. It seems that everything that can possibly go wrong is going wrong these days.

Sometimes you ask yourself, what is it about Nigeria that bestialises people, that brings out the animal in them? Every now and then you find perfectly sensible people who behave impeccably when they are outside Nigeria's shores but who inexplicably succumb to the Nigerian craze immediately they return home. Is there an atmospheric spirit that lurks in the Nigerian airspace and possesses people like some incubus immediately they alight from their aircraft or breathe the Nigerian air? Or is it attributable to a genetic dysfunction in our DNA?

What a needless and utterly senseless tragedy! I cannot begin to imagine what his bereaved fiancée must be passing through. Just think of how it would feel to be so close to your happy day and yet so far away. It is for atrocities like this that God will punish Boko Haram and their sponsors forever and ever. It shall never be well with the perpetrators of this evil - not in this life and not in the life to come.

For me, the Rev Chris Okotie represents a curiousity, a strangely fascinating paradox, at once perplexing and exciting. Is he a pastor or is he an entertainer? Does he dignify the Christian faith or does he demean it? Is his hippiness a means of attracting the younger generation to Christ or is it an end in itself? In the atmosphere of unbridled exuberance and voluptuous flamboyance that permeates his church, what happens to morality and to the message of moderation and self-control which Christianity preaches? Is the quest for spiritual fulfilment and eternal security reducible to the razzmatazz of religious showbiz and rhetorical panache? I remain as perplexed as ever.

These tit for tat attacks must be condemned and both sides should be told to exercise restraint. However, I think it's important to remember that the fundamental reason for this violence - a factor which predates even the recent abductions and killings of youths on both sides - is the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the continued building of Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory. Even as someone who usually supports Israel and who loathes Islamist fundamentalism, I find the construction of settlements on seized land simply unconscionable, especially since the United Nations Security Council has on several occasions declared those settlements illegal. While I sincerely hope for a resolution to the age-old grievances between Israel and its Arab neighbours, I have no reason for optimism. As anyone who has studied the Middle East can attest, these are historical conflicts founded in the religions of these peoples and deeply ingrained in their psyche. Only God can deliver the children of the Middle East. May God deliver them.

From a purely aesthetic perspective, this is probably the best stadium in Nigeria and certainly one of the best in Africa, especially when viewed from the exterior. I guess this is in keeping with Governor Akpabio's persona. Whatever you have to say against him, you cannot accuse him of delivering substandard infrastructure. He always does things on a megalomanic scale. His projects may cost a bomb but he sure delivers quality.

Although I cannot vouch for the veracity of this story, I would have few regrets if Keshi were to resign. Admittedly, he won us the AFCON and deserves our commendation. But I think Nigerian football should have gone beyond the poor tactics and low technical output that I sometimes saw on display in Brazil. We cannot continue to bask in the AFCON glory, content on being local champions. A country of 170 million people has no business taking the like of Reuben Gabriel and Chigozie Agbim to the World Cup. Let's look for a tactitian who is well versed with the finer elements of the game and who is willing to scour the nooks of this nation in search of the very best possible talents available. Players should no longer be selected or dropped on the basis of whether they prostrated before the coach. May God help Nigeria.

My faith has found a resting place
Not in device nor creed
I trust the ever-living One
His wounds for me shall plead.

Refrain:
I need no other argument,
I need no other plea
It is enough that Jesus died
And that He died for me.

Enough for me that Jesus saves
That ends my fear and doubt
A sinful soul I come to him
He'll never cast me out.

My Great Physician heals the sick
The lost He came to find
Salvation through my Saviour's blood
Salvation in his name.

If APC is ideologically different from PDP, why should politicians be defecting from the latter to the former? Does it mean that parties no longer have ideologies? Can a Democrat such as Bill Clinton defect to the Republican Party and work with George W. Bush, or vice versa? Can a socialist be comfortable in a party whose manifesto glorifies cut-throat capitalism? If politicians are now crossing the aisle with such ease, are we to assume that Nigerian parties are one and the same? Does it mean that party names are now mere tags that mean nothing?

Furthermore, will the mere fact of defection transform these thieves and knaves into saints and messiahs? Can a leopard change its spots? Who can guarantee that a governor who stole his state's monthly allocation while in the PDP will not do same or even worse after defecting to the APC?

Politics / Re: Let The Truth Be Told Before It Is Too Late - EK Clark's Letter To Obasanjo by McLuhan(m): 10:58am On Jan 07, 2014
If Obasanjo had any sense of shame, he would have withdrawn from the public glare based on the sheer quantum of insidious revelations and opprobious accusations heaped on him by various persons, not least of whom is his own daughter, Iyabo. Personally, I am persuaded that Iyabo's categorisation of her father and Chief Clark's description of him are true, factual, and correct: Obasanjo is a scheming, self-centered, morally reprobate, and utterly corrupt egomaniac. For that reason, I am persuaded that Obasanjo's letter to Jonathan was not motivated by altruism but by a self-serving narcisism. Why are Nigerians not concerned about the sheer depravity of a man who (mis)ruled them for a combined period of more than a decade and now wants to control their lives again? Let Nigerians beware of Obasanjo's treachery. If he couldn't transform Nigeria when he was head of state and president, he can't do so now. To be sure, Jonathan is not perfect. In fact, for some people he might not even be an averagely good president. But we will have the opportunity to vote him out soon enough. Let's not allow the Obasanjos of this world to goad us into setting our country ablaze. Think of South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

Politics / Re: Jonathan Will Be The Catalyst Of Change In Nigeria by McLuhan(m): 4:38pm On Jan 06, 2014
Afam4eva:
People do different things for different reasons. Obasanjo supported Jonathan because he saw Jonathan as someone he could pocket but he was wrong. Do you think Obasanjo would have written that letter if Jonathan was still saying "Yes Sir" to him? I doubt that very much.
We need to ask ourselves certain tough questions: Is Obasanjo as fiendishly self-centred and as incorrigibly evil as his daughter Iyabo has alleged he is? If yes, is it therefore in Nigeria's interest for President Jonathan to do Obasanjo's bidding? What is the moral difference between a supposedly corrupt Jonathan government and an Obasanjo regime that failed to account for the murder of Bola Ige, Marshall Harry, Alfred Sekibo, and the countless innocents who perished in Odi and Zaki Biam? If, as we all assume, Jonathan's government is corrupt, what shall we say of a president who openly boasted that elections were a do-or-die affair, who appointed himself to the office of petroleum minister, and who granted arbitrary import waivers to various acolytes of his? Take note: I have no sympathy for Jonathan, whom I believe could - indeed should - have done more than he has done to improve the lives of Nigerians. But I also believe that Obasanjo is not and cannot be Nigeria's messiah. His recent open letter to the president smacks of brazen hypocrisy and is obviously motivated by selfish interest. That a man who sleeps with his daughter-in-law should suddenly become the conscience of Nigeria is surely the depth of moral turpitude. Let us think of ways of improving our democracy instead of listening to the jaded and discredited voices of moneyed oligarchs who pretend they are protecting our interest while protecting their nests. One way of improving our polity is to resolve here and now that we shall no longer play the sycophant nor sell our votes to any politician.
Romance / Re: Menses On Wedding Night? by McLuhan(m): 1:14pm On Jan 06, 2014
I find this fixation on sex and sexuality rather annoying. Must every discussion on Nairaland be connected to intercourse? The worst of all is that such threads often tend to objectify women and reduce them to mere tools for the satiation of male lust. As a man, I find this portrayal not only demeaning to women but also insulting to those of us who consider our wives equal partners with us. The idea of menstruation on one's wedding night as constituting some kind of sin or abomination is sexist, chauvinistic, and condescending.

It is called hypocrisy. Is this not the same Lagos State Government that prides itself as the champion of probity, transparency, and good governance? What is bad about the Freedom of Information Act that should make the Lagos State Government to reject it? Every liberal democracy in the world has its version of the FOI Act. So, if the supposedly corrupt and anti-democratic PDP government can enact such a law, why should an APC-controlled state government, which claims to be a paragon of equity, repudiate such a law? Although I do not support the PDP, I have often said that the APC may just be all hype and no substance.

Wealth has certainly made Oyakhilome more urbane and more "refined" in a rather sauve manner. However, I cannot say whether it has affected his spiritual life positively. There is something money can do to your sense of humility, your integrity, and your consciousness of absolute dependence on God. It is the very rare pastor that remains grounded after the private jets begin to arrive.
Politics / Re: Fashola's Government Is Not As Good As You Think by McLuhan(m): 11:42pm On Jan 01, 2014
Nigerians are the easiest people to govern on earth! If you hear them rhapsodise about Fashola's performance you'd think he has performed unprecedented miracles. The truth is that Fashola is only a perfomer by Nigerian standards! In terms of global best governance practices, no Nigerian state governor deserves special commendation, not even one! Just think of it: Is there any Nigerian governor who is not neck-deep in corruption? I mean the most egregious barefaced looting of state funds. Or are we rejoicing over the fact that they manage to construct some roads? Even Akpabio, who has presided over perhaps one of the most impressive infrastructural renewals in Nigerian history, is often accused of misplacement of priorities, a practice that has seen precious funds lavished on frivolities while leaving the state underfunded in some key areas. In some states such as Theodore Orji's Abia, one is forced to ask if there is a governor at all. Orji represents criminal ineptitude dressed up and sycophantically marketed under the annoying sobriquet "Ochendo". Other governors now make their home in Abuja, making frequent trips abroad on the slightest excuse, mostly using the alibi of scouting for "foreign investors", and only coming home to their states when some important dignitary, perhaps the president, pays a visit. So, if Fashola is a model, he is only a Nigerian model. In any case, a governor who has had the kind of conflicts he has had with medical doctors and who has managed to price university education beyond the reach of most common people in his state is not my idea of a model governor. That's my personal opinion anyway, and I don't necessarily expect others to agree with me.

cap28:

If Yoruba women experience the best treatment in marriage how come so many of them are divorced, living apart from their husbands or have simply been abandoned? Even the ones who claim to be married are forever hopping in and out of bed with other men.

I hope you are not insinuating that obasanjo was successful at running Nigeria because I can tell you in no uncertain terms that he was a categorical failure on all levels, is it the billions he handed over to the paris club for a phantom debt, or is it the massacre of innocents in zaki biam and odi, or is it the wholesale handing over of valuable govt assets to predatory foreign investors for a pittance, or is it the appointment of world bank puppet okonjo iweala who has assisted in the whole sale economic rap.e of Nigeria, I could go on and on.

sycophancy and ignorance are the twin diseases we have in Nigeria that will surely kill many of us.

charity as they say begins at home, show me a man who can not run a successful home and I will show you an all round failure.

You keep strings of women , you don't know how many children you have and yet you have the impudence to regard yourself as an elder statesman, why should any one respect someone with zero moral discipline, leaders are supposed to lead by example but in Nigeria its a case of do as I say and I will do as I please. Its a good job that 90% of Nigerians do not have properly functioning brains.

In a normal society this man would have been treated worse than a leper.

So you think women find sexual perverts who sleep with their own son's wives irresistible? do you think the women who sleep with him are going for him because of his charisma, charm and outstanding good looks or for his money and position?

Obasanjo is only relevant because he still has some remnants of power in Nigeria, this is the only reason why he has people defending him, the real people who will tell him the truth are his family members like his daughter and ex wife who he has treated shabbily.

One thing you can take from this is that arrogance does not pay, Obasanjo is arrogant and he is also a narcissist, he has such a high opinion of himself that he thought that he could continue to treat people like garbage and get away with it but look at what is happening to him now, his own flesh and blood are coming out to expose his nyash in public, talk about chickens coming home to roost!
Anyone who associates Obasanjo with good leadership does not know what good leadership is. For me, it is doubly tragic that Nigeria had the misfortune of being ruled on two occasions by that man. It either shows the paucity of good leaders in Nigeria or simply demonstrates that those who could perform better were not given the opportunity to rise to such positions. I am inclined to believe the latter.

Please note that I am no apologist for Goodluck Jonathan who, to me, represents incompetence and opportunism exalted by the fortuitous workings of providence. But in Obasanjo I see all that is quintessentially Nigerian, all that I regret about this country: a great promise dashed as a result of corruption, greed, impunity, hypocrisy, pettiness, ego, and every other form of avarice. That Obasanjo should have the impudence to write a sanctimonious letter about the affairs of a country he helped to wreck is the height of hubris. He should be hiding his face in shame!

BADNEAT: in as much as I'm not a fan of the Jonathan administration, I must say they used a good strategy here. ..by issuing the sack ultimatum and getting students and over 70percent of lecturers back to school, ,the ultimatum has achieved its aims...
Jonathan of all people knw there was no way he could sack and recruit new lecturers just like that..it'll take several month for them to fit in...he also knw that the sack threat was going to get most lecturers back to school. ...lecturers of which 80percent of them are no longer in support of the strike action needed nothing more than a reason to go back to school. .and Jonathan gave them that...with the sack threat..the ASUU chapters cannot firmly say they've been betrayed by the lecturers. ...JONAH USED HIS HEAD
Brother, use your brain. There is no such thing as "substantial compliance". Okupe is simply lying. No federal university has resumed lectures. Read all the major newspapers and news websites. If the threat had any prospects of succeeding, do you think the FG would have withdrawn it? It's a face-saving measure by a tactless and irresponsible government whose bluff has been called. Those figures you are quoting - 70%, 80% - are fictional. The questions we should ask ourselves are: Why is the FG refusing to sign an MOU on the resolutions it purportedly reached with ASUU during the famous 13-hour meeting? Does the FG's reluctance to formalise the agreement portray the government as responsible and sincere? Given its current antics and its antecedents with regard to implementing the 2009 Agreement, can this government be trusted to implement an unwritten agreement?

What a pathetic lie by a shameless government! Why not simply admit that your resume-or-be-sacked gimmick has failed? In which university has there been a "substantial compliance"? Just thank your stars that you and your principals were born in the cesspit of a country called Nigeria, for if it were in saner climes a tout like Wike would not even qualify to be an office cleaner in the Ministry of Education, talkless of ascending to the exalted office of Minister of Education, so as to have the effrontery of ordering professors to sign a register or be sacked! Such nonsense is only possible in Nigeria.
