Just30:Go do a survey of Jamestown, ashaiman, even Sekondi houses and come tell us how many of them have toilets. But then again these are slumy areas, so... with the exception of Sekondi, which is not a slum but which still has a 'toilet problem ' from what I'm learning A significant number of Ghanaians use air conditioning? Are you serious? Majority of us live in the 'local' areas o, not the estates. And I've lived all over the place from Tema, Sekondi Takoradi, oda, Volta, central region etc and can literally count the number of private homes with air-conditioning on my fingers. What are you talking? Our compound houses where people would use all their money for rent advance and electricity and have nothing left over for furniture, TV, fridge is where they'd be having money for air-conditioning? You always exaggerate with your Ghana experiences I don't know which part of Ghana you live in 1 Like |

samorobo:True. I grew up, did my primary education in the twin city of Sekondi-Takoradi(about our 3rd city). My parents were transferred there. Every place we lived, about 9, except 2, had toilets. And these were not zongo areas. Some places would have space for toilets, they were never provided. And my friends had same problem. I know every corner of the town so this's a 'common' feature. Hopefully things have improved |

Just30:Same electricity that we play hide and seek with? That I know people who'd even remove their outside bulbs so they can afford prepaid? How many of us even use air conditioning in our very hot climate? There're different types of Nigerians and I know Nigerians who pay 'top cedi' for stuff here. I've Nigeria in laws and they pay 200 cedi every 2 weeks for prepaid for example. Aden? Yes Nigerians may eventually run Ghana down with crime, dru.gs etc BUT they'd give us good infrastructure, beautify our spaces etc. We should learn to beautify/properly lay out our spaces and someone like me i won't complain too much Small small we're getting there, where properly laying out our spaces would become commonplace. Growing up I thought it was normal to have houses without toilets, or roads without sidewalks because I didn't see these. We can't be having these basic problems in this modern era. What stops a DCE/MCE from insisting people have toilets in their homes? Let's do better, Ghana 1 Like |

vaxx:Why can't we compare ourselves with the best? With Europe? Or even the 'comparable' Asia, south America countries we've seen rise from poverty to riches? Like the Brazils, Singapores, Koreas, etc? In west Africa the big boys are 4, Nigeria, Ghana, cote d'Ivoire, Senegal in that order. You go by human development index, as it should be, Cape Verde is most developed followed by Ghana cote divoire TOGO Nigeria. Small less than 1million people c.verde is insignificant in the scheme of things so essentially, Ghana is the most developed in the subregion. No problem You go by GDP, we've fallen out of the top 10 in Africa. Cote d'Ivoire has overtaken us. In fact our position in a lot of rankings are PRECARIOUS to the extent that the least displacement, we'd be 'overthrown' If the Congos and other countries should get just a little serious with their lives, Ghana we may not feature favourably in a lot of rankings. Like how we age-cheated and dominated the under 17s but immediately scientific age checking was introduced, we're struggling to win laurels That's what you should be concerned about. Not on whether we're better than war torn Liberia/Sierra Leone, or 'poorer' Senegal, 'security-challenged' Nigeria etc. We've a decent population/land size, we've lake Volta, we're more homogeneous, we're not landlocked, we're HUMAN/MINERAL RESOURCE-RICH etc, BUT with FEWER PROBLEMS, so that we should EASILY become a DEVELOPED ECONOMY, not the piecemeal thing we're doing Here there's virtually no opposition to the mismanagement of our leaders. Look at European farmers block roads, disrupt society etc to protest poor agric policies. But here we'd be suffering and be quiet. And instead of our leaders to take advantage of this 'freedom' to do monumental stuff for us, no, they're busy either enriching themselves or doing MEDIOCRE stuff Etc etc. we should learn how to 'beautify' stuff, or we could have money but our spaces would keep looking ugly. Buildings/roads must be well laid out in straight lines etc. Tech for example has more modern beautiful buildings than Legon but legon's well laid out plan, uniform colour of buildings, greenery etc make Legon appear prettier in my opinion. That's how we should organise our spaces. Etc etc |

vaxx:The points you're raising are exactly reasons why Accra, Ghana should be doing wayyyyy better than we're currently doing. You don't agree? Because the ADVANTAGES we enjoy as a country are ENORMOUS. There's no BRT system in Ghana. We couldn't implement it. It requires creating dedicated roads on both sides of existing roads for ONLY BRT buses to ply to reduce traffic etc. we couldn't do it. We did trotro with the BRT buses, made losses because they're big and stop too often so people reverted to using the old smaller faster trotros and most of the BRT buses we imported are rotting away I can raise several points but it'd only prolong my comment. Sometimes I say give Ghana to even Nigerians and see how they'd turn it around. If we were a serious country we should be exporting electricity to Nigeria by now. That you and a lot of Ghanaians are 'content' with our mediocre performance is why we're where we are, when we can EASILY achieve more and become the eldorado we wish to be. Ivory coast suffered 2 civil wars, 2000 plus people died etc BUT they still held on to their number 1 cocoa producer tag. If it were us?... 'small' bawku conflict we can't solve, now the factions have resorted to shooting innocent passengers in bawku bound buses. imagine we had a boko haram? I could go on and on. There's a lot of nothingness/bareness/lack of leadership in our spaces, so don't act as if we're making anuly significant progress. With the ADVANTAGES we enjoy as a country, we should be doing wayyyy better. Go and see cocoa Produce Buying Company PBC, it's bankrupt and it's assets are being seized. Aden? We can't manage anything? And this 'mediocre' mindset reflects in even our black stars. See how other countries are 'killing' themselves to do exploits for their countries .But black stars would be lethargic, play as if there's nothing at stake etc. we'd be a goal up or down, Richard ofori would be so slow to start the game, wo dwene ho a wontease Etc etc. 'poorer' Senegal, go and look at the wonderful things they're doing. Doing BRT, running ELECTRIC train, building a new city etc. Whoever is running their space is visionary, and you can see it in their doings. Etc etc 1 Like |

Appisko:Abuja is planned Even with Lagos I see lots of beauty. Your taller structures, straight roads, the long bridges that span the lagoons, your beachfront structures, buildings in straight lines, the overhead rail etc all bring some beauty to Lagos Accra here even though we're a 'beach front city ' like Dakar, Abidjan, Lagos, our beachfront is not developed. The marine drive project which was to do that for us has never materialised. I've been saying we should convert our korle, odaw lagoons in the middle of Accra into waterways that people can ply into the interior of Accra for travel, pleasure etc, like pertains abroad, arch the bridges over them so watercraft can pass under etc, but no. Accra-tema rail line should be dualized, even electrified. Overcrowded Lagos is even running a Bus Rapid Transit system. We couldn't implement it here even though we sent delegations to Nigeria, Tanzania etc to understudy their BRT. We should be thinking of building a new capital city, or even just a completely new WELL PLANNED CITY but no, our leaders are concerned with other things. Etc etc 2 Likes |

popizaino:Our problem too is our leaders/city planners don't have eyes for beauty. That proper 'avantgarde' sort of beauty. I read somewhere that Nairobi is still following the master plan the British developed for the city. Ghana , Nkrumah abrogated the British master plan and used his own African master plan and successive governments threw that away and are building Accra with no master plan. Accra is not a planned city in the true sense of the word. So there's money here but our leaders are not taking any drastic measures to modernise Accra, and our spaces are looking ugly. Not to be political, but someone like Mahama has eyes for beauty and it shows in his e-block school designs etc. Nana Addo in his 1st term brought the master planner of Singapore to replan Accra but nothing came of that |

holyfather:The metrics have already been done, by the United Nations and that's the Human Development Index (HDI). You go by that objective metric, Cape Verde is the most developed in West Africa, followed by Ghana, then Ivory Coast etc. But someone like me I don't regard small less than 1 million people Cape Verde as a "big boy", so that leaves Ghana as the most developed in the subregion 4 Likes |
