Akunyili, youths clash at sister’s burial •Police, monarch avert crisis

Written by Sam Nwaoko, Awka
Sunday, 18 July 2010
THE prompt intervention of the police in Anambra State and the traditional ruler of Isuofia community in Aguata Local Government Area of the state, Igwe Okpara Unegbu, saved what would have marred the burial of the elder sister of the Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, the late Mrs. Gloria Uzoamaka Ezenwanne, at the weekend.

Sunday Tribune gathered at Umeze village in Isuofia that angry youths had gone to the venue prepared by the minister to host her guests after the burial of her sister and dismantled the predominantly white canopies mounted at the place.

The deceased was also an in-law of the former Central Bank Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

According to sources, the youth were displeased by what they alleged was the impropriety of the parallel reception arranged by the minister since she was allegedly not in talking terms with the woman, who was the mother of Dr. Nonye, the wife of Professor Soludo, until her death.
Community sources also said that the youth expressed displeasure with Professor Akunyili over what they claimed was an act against their custom and that she should have joined hands with the sister’s family to host a reception.

Following the confirmation that the minister was planning to host a parallel ceremony at the home of the neighbours of the Ezenwanne’s, youths of the community gathered and dismantled the canopies in the early hours of the day as the relations of the late Mrs. Ezenwanne went to retrieve her body from the mortuary.

The act incurred the wrath of the two mobile policemen and soldiers said to be in the advance team of Professor Akunyili.

The two mobile policemen, Ajih Ahmadu and Levi Adekwu, and three soldiers were said to have caught up with four of the youth dismantling the canopies and allegedly beat them to stupor, thereby heightening tension in the community that morning.

Information got to the Aguata Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Illiya Madaki, who was said to have arrived promptly at the area in company with some senior police officers.

While the requiem mass was going on at St Theresa’s Catholic Church, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover, arrived at the church and consulted with Mr. Madaki, on ways to resolve the matter before the end of the church service to avoid crisis during the reception.

After getting some community leaders together inside the church premises, Oshodi-Glover allegedly consulted with the monarch of the town for guidance on the tradition of the people on such issues.
Sources told Sunday Tribune that Igwe Unegbu told Glover that whenever a married woman died, her immediate family comprising the husband and children would be the chief mourners and therefore host all other relations and friends who would all be guests to the family.

He declared that Dora Akunyili, who hails from Nanka with the deceased but married in Agulu, had no business trying to host her own guests in a parallel tent, saying traditionally, Akunyili and other sisters and brothers of the deceased were supposed to witness the internment of their sister and later go back to Agulu or anywhere else to host their guests if they so desired.
Following this, an announcement was made that Professor Akunyili’s guests would be hosted at their father’s compound in Nanka, about 10 minutes drive from Isuofia.

Reacting, Professor Akunyili denied that she was not in speaking terms with her late sister, pointing out that she had chosen the venue for convenience, saying there was nothing wrong in hosting her own visitors at a venue of her choice.

The minister said the story was being spread by somebody to tarnish her image politically.

She said she wouldn’t know why the canopies at the venue she chose were dismantled by the youth, adding that she did not know what happened there between her security aides and the youth.

In his sermon at the funeral mass, Bishop Amatu described Madam Gloria Ezenwanne as a virtuous woman who lived in the service of God and prayed for the repose of her soul in eternity while the Information Minister said she was deeply pained when she was told of her sister’s death and thanked Dr. Nonye and her husband Professor Soludo for taking good care of the deceased while she was alive.

In his own remark, Soludo lamented the poor medical facilities in the country, disclosing that several Nigerian hospitals gave the deceased a clean bill of health until they took her abroad to discover that she had a serious health challenge. He said that though he was an in-law to the deceased, having married her first daughter, Madam Gloria had been his de-facto mother for over 20 years because he lost his own mother while he was just eight years, while Emeka, the Chief mourner said his mother gave everything she had to the service of God and humanity.

Among the dignitaries that attended the occasion were two former vice presidents, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State and his deputy, former governor Chris Ngige, several senators including Annie Okonkwo and Emma Anosike and House of Representatives members from Anambra and other states of the nation.

Others include Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other party leaders among numerous others.

Politics / Ibadan: Alao Akala's Aides, Late Adedibu's Wife Launches Ibb Campaign by metalgong5(m): 10:38am On Jul 04, 2010
Written by By Banji Aluko
Sunday, 04 July 2010

In furtherance of the presidential ambition of General Ibrahim Babangida, the Oyo State and local governments’ campaign executives of the former military president were yesterday inaugurated in Ibadan.

The well-attended occasion, which took place at K.S. Motel in Ibadan, had in attendance a chieftain of PDP in Oyo State, Alhaji Azeem Gbolarumi; wife of the late strongman of Ibadan politics, Alhaja Bose Adedibu and some close associates of Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State.

Alhaji Gbolarumi, who is the coordinator of the Oyo State IBB Campaign Organisation, said the annulment of June 12 presidential election should not stop IBB from contesting the 2011 election because IBB had done many positive things for Nigeria in the past.

“We in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have seen the qualities embedded in the man and we identify with him in his quest to become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria come 2011. So much has been said about the man IBB and his leadership credentials. Permit me, therefore, to say that most of these are fallacies and a creation of a class of elite, who are bent on denying Nigerians of quality leadership”, he stated.

Alhaji Gbolarumi also spoke on what he called the ‘six imaginary’ sins of IBB, which are consistently raised as factors that disqualify IBB from contesting. He said the ‘imaginary sins’ were: the Dele Giwa’s murder issue; the refusal of IBB to appear at the Oputa Panel; the excess oil proceeds; the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP); why IBB secretly enlisted Nigeria as a member of Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC), and the annulment of the June 12 election.

On June 12, Alhaji Gbolarumi said the annulment should be seen in the mould of the continued existence of Nigeria.

Other notable people who graced the event include the chairman of Oyo State T.C.T.C., Alhaji Shina Alabi; Major Salawu;former chairman of Akinyele Local Government, Mr. Yemi Aderibigbe; the chairman of the Lagos State executive of the IBB Campaign Organisation, Mr. Ebunola Martins, and representatives of the Hausa and Igbo communities.

On her own, Alhaja Bose Adedibu said there were answers for people who did not believe in the presidential ambition of IBB if only they would believe in fate. Different speakers took turns to extol the virtues of General Babangida.

Alhaji Sidi Ali, who represented General Babangida at the occasion, said IBB had presented himself to Nigerians, hence it was left for Nigerians to decide on him.

Katsumoto:

I agree that a governor should attempt to address some of the issues that have plagued a state but it shouldn't affect future developments. Also, Udezue, what if other states did/do not have the same issues as Anambra? What if Lagos and Rivers do not have pensions problems? All states do not have the same problems. Past governors in Nigeria have spent funds on projects that was beneficial to them and their cronies. Each state should attempt to address its problems and not attempt to window dress.

The question is, 'do governors only have resources to tackle one or two issues during a four year term'? I ask because Obi can not be judged on pensions alone. Fashola is rated as being the best governor because you can feel his presence in every facet of life in lagos state. Also, building good durable roads is necessary in every state for development. Like I said previously, I don't know much about Obi to knock him but there is a reason why he isn't perceived to be one of the best governors and it has nothing to do with not playing to the gallery.

OnlyTruth just used the pension payment example because it was the latest  news about Anambra government he got from Vanguard news. The truth is that governor Peter Obi has surpassed most of his colleagues in terms of multi-sectoral development and also judging by the state's monthly revenue.

If you have been following recent news, you should have noticed that most states, including some oil producing state like Bayelsa, and other South Western states except Lagos are finding it difficult to pay their workers talkless of paying monthly pensions. Some are now burdening their future generations with debts by issuing bonds whereas Anambra government under Governor  Peter Obi is in good financial shape even as he is developing all sectors of Anambra economy.

Fashola seems to be a nice man, but I dont think that he is the best governor. Lagos being the state with the most concentration of multinational companies has to be performing far better than the dummy being sold to us by some quaters of the media. Infact, if he is really a progressive as some people say, then why is he using the court to obstruct the investigation of the  financial allegations levelled against him by the True Face of Lagos. It shows that he wants us to know that he is not accountable to the citizens so long as he has built one modern secondary school in Ajegunle and places the news on the front page of THE NATION.

I can not knock Obi because I don't know much about how he is running his state but I do know that he is not generally considered amongst the best governors in Nigeria. You are bound to be biased because APGA is Ojukwu's party and we all know of your unflinching support for him.

Since you don't know how Obi is running Anambra state but definitely know that he is not considered amongst the best governors in Nigeria, Please can you tell us those governors that are better than Peter Obi. Also can you name the so called progressives amongst them.

Russian mathematician wins $1 million prize, but he appears to be happy with $0

By Marc Kaufman
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 2, 2010
Who would turn down a $1 million prize for solving a math problem?
Perhaps the smartest man in the world.
Three months ago, a famously impoverished Russian mathematician named Grigori Perelman was awarded the prestigious $1 million Clay Mathematics Institute Millennium Prize for his groundbreaking work -- having solved a problem of three-dimensional geometry that had resisted scores of brilliant mathematicians since 1904.
Thursday, the institute announced that Perelman, known equally for his brilliance and his eccentricities, formally and finally turned down the award and the money. He didn't deserve it, he told a Russian news service, because he was following a mathematical path set by another.
The president of the Clay Institute, James Carlson, said that Perelman was a mathematician of "extraordinary power and creativity" and that it was he alone who solved the intractable Poincaré's conjecture. "All mathematicians follow the work of others, but only a handful make breakthroughs of this magnitude," Carlson said.
Still, while he had been hopeful that Perelman would take the prize, he was hardly surprised that he did not. Perelman had already turned down several of the world's top awards in mathematics. And when he solved the Poincaré conjecture, he ignored the peer-review process and simply posted his three-part solution online. That was in 2003.
It took other mathematicians two years to determine that he had indeed solved the problem.
"The community knew about Perelman, and that's why they took him seriously," Carlson said. "But what he did is definitely not the way things are normally done."
Immediately after his postings, Perelman was invited to lecture at several top American universities, and did so with aplomb. Speaking in fluent English, he wowed his math colleagues and, after returning to Russia, continued to communicate via e-mail with some about his work. Within several years, however, he stopped responding and left the math world, Carlson said.
"I went to St. Petersburg almost two years ago and I did get him on the phone," Carlson said. "I told him I'd like to meet, but he said it 'wasn't necessary at this time.' "
Perelman lives in a bare-bones apartment in St. Petersburg with his elderly mother; a poor and reclusive man with long, wild hair and, in his photos, a look of fierce pride. Carlson said that when he spoke with Perelman, the man had quit his research and teaching job at Russia's top institute and did not appear to have other employment.
The Poincaré conjecture, named after prominent French mathematician Henri Poincaré, involves a complex problem in the field of topology -- an important area of math that studies the enduring properties of objects that are stretched or otherwise deformed, but not torn or otherwise reconstituted. Scores of prominent mathematicians tried to solve it over decades but failed, leading to its characterization as the Mount Everest of math.
The $1 million prize was to be the first of seven Millennium awards given out by the Cambridge, Mass.-based Clay Institute to mathematicians who master long-unsolved problems. The program was established in 2000 and an award will only be made if one of the seven selected math problems is resolved.
Perelman, 43, did not show up for the early June ceremony in Paris where his prize was to be awarded. Author Masha Gessen, who wrote a book about Perelman, told the prize committee earlier this year that Perelman would not attend the Paris event, but said he had not decided whether to accept the prize money.
The Poincaré conjecture was updated over the years and one of its modifiers, William Thurston, said at the ceremony in Paris that "Perelman's aversion to public spectacle and to riches is mystifying to many. I have not talked to him about it and I can certainly not speak for him, but I want to say I have complete empathy and admiration for his inner strength and clarity, to be able to know and hold true to himself. . . . We have learned from Perelman's mathematics. Perhaps we should also pause to reflect on ourselves and learn from Perelman's attitude toward life."
In 2006, Perelman turned down another coveted award in mathematics, the Fields Medal, which honored "his contributions to geometry and his revolutionary insights into the analytical and geometric structure" of topology. The journal Science credited Perelman with the scientific breakthrough of 2006, the first time a mathematician had been recognized.
Still, Perelman was quoted by the Interfax news service this week as saying he believes his contribution in proving the Poincaré conjecture was no greater than that of American mathematician Richard Hamilton, who first suggested a pathway toward the solution.
The Clay Institute was founded in 1998 by Boston businessman Landon T. Clay and his wife, Lavinia. Its mission statement says the institute was formed "to increase and disseminate mathematical knowledge." On its Web site, the institute says its leaders will make an announcement this fall about how the prize money will be used to benefit mathematics
