The Abia State JUSUN Secretary, Comrade Chibueze Nwachukwu, reiterated their position, saying, “Despite previous assurances, the minimum wage and associated benefits have not been implemented for judiciary workers. The Abia State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has announced its decision to join the nationwide industrial action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), ABN TV reports.

This development comes in response to the alleged non-implementation of the national minimum wage for judiciary workers in Abia State.

Speaking with ABN TV, the State Secretary of JUSUN, Comrade Chibueze Nwachukwu, confirmed that judiciary workers in the state would commence the strike on December 4, 2024. The action aligns with directives from the NLC and JUSUN’s national leadership, which mandated all affected state branches to enforce the strike.

Comrade Nwachukwu explained that judiciary workers in Abia State are yet to benefit from the new minimum wage and other salary adjustments under the Consolidated Judicial Salary Structure (CONJUSS). He noted that while other civil servants in the state, who are paid under the public service salary structure, may have started receiving adjustments, judiciary workers remain excluded.

"We are yet to receive the minimum wage adjustments meant for judiciary workers. This is why we are obeying the national directive to embark on this industrial action," Nwachukwu stated.

He also highlighted that the union had previously suspended a similar strike following assurances by the state government to address their grievances, including the implementation of the minimum wage, wage awards, and payment of arrears. However, these commitments remain unfulfilled.

Nwachukwu stressed that the strike is not a local decision but a directive from the JUSUN national headquarters, making it binding on all state chapters.

"Despite the promises made during our earlier meetings with representatives of the state government, nothing has been implemented. As a branch of the national union, we are obligated to comply with directives to advocate for the rights of judiciary workers," he said.

The decision to join the strike has sparked contrasting opinions among judiciary staff in the state. In a separate interview with ABN TV, Architect Onyekachi Ndukwe, a staff member of the judiciary, criticized the strike as unwarranted.

According to Ndukwe, the state government has fulfilled its obligations to judiciary workers by approving their salary demands, including the implementation of the CONJUSS structure.

"The government has complied with the judiciary's demands. Embarking on a strike now is unnecessary and amounts to sabotage," Ndukwe argued.

He further suggested that any disruptions caused by the strike could undermine the progress made in resolving the disputes between the government and the judiciary.

The state chapter of the NLC had earlier claimed that the Abia State Government had complied with the minimum wage implementation for civil servants. However, Nwachukwu clarified that this compliance only applied to public service workers, leaving judiciary staff under the CONJUSS structure unaffected.

"The state NLC chairman's statement about compliance does not cover us in the judiciary. We are paid under a separate salary structure, which has not been adjusted," he said.

The law firm of Chief Gabriel Emperor Ogbonna & Co., acting on behalf of their client, Mr. Samuel Chukwu of Amaokwe Item, has responded to allegations circulating on social media that he murdered his pregnant wife, Mrs. Jessica Olua Chukwu (24).

In a detailed statement, the legal team described the claims as "malicious falsehoods" and outlined steps to seek redress.

The allegations, initially published by popular platforms including Linda Ikeji Blog, and individuals like Christian Onumajuru, Daniel Ukanwata, and Fada Oluoma, have caused widespread outrage and distress to Mr. Chukwu. Social media posts, which included graphic images, suggested that he had beaten his wife to death. Mr. Chukwu's legal representatives categorically denied the claims, stating that he was in Lagos when the tragic incident occurred in Aba.

The firm revealed that Mrs. Jessica Chukwu, a member of the Faith Tabernacle Congregation, had traveled to Aba at her mother's insistence to give birth under her family’s care. During her two-month stay, Mr. Chukwu reportedly provided all necessary support from Lagos. On the day of the incident, Jessica gave birth to a baby girl at her parent’s home but tragically passed away 30 minutes later.

The statement highlighted Faith Tabernacle’s known stance against the use of medications and medical interventions, implying potential negligence on the part of Jessica’s family. Mr. Chukwu was informed of her passing via phone call and traveled to Aba to inquire about the circumstances. Upon arrival, he and his brother Chidiebere were reportedly attacked by Jessica’s family and had to be rescued by the police.

The law firm emphasized inconsistencies in the narrative propagated online. They questioned why no autopsy was conducted before Mrs. Chukwu’s burial, which took place yesterday in Amaokwe Item. “If she was murdered, how could the burial proceed without forensic investigation?” the statement asked.

They also pointed out that Mr. Chukwu had filed a police report at CPS Aba and is listed as the complainant rather than the accused in this matter. Additionally, Jessica’s newborn baby is currently in Mr. Chukwu’s custody, handed over by her mother, further contradicting claims of foul play.

Screenshots of WhatsApp conversations between the couple—some of which were shared with discretion—allegedly depict a loving relationship with no evidence of discord. The firm announced that these messages, along with other evidence, would be presented in court.

Chief Barrister Gabriel Emperor Ogbonna criticized those spreading unverified allegations, describing the situation as a calculated attempt to tarnish Mr. Chukwu’s reputation. The law firm is demanding that all defamatory content be taken down immediately and announced plans to initiate both criminal and civil proceedings against the identified individuals and platforms involved.

“It is unfair to circulate such damaging falsehoods without verification. This case highlights the importance of responsible reporting,” the statement read.

The legal team called on the public to await the outcome of court proceedings before concluding. In the meantime, they have appealed for calm and assured that justice will be pursued to its fullest extent.

Mr Samuel Chukwu, who was accused of beating his wife, 24-year-old (not 25-year-old) Jessica Olua Chukwu, to death, has denied the claim, saying it is a false narrative to tarnish his image.

Mr Chukwu is a forensic auditor who hails from Amaokwe Item in Bende LGA of Abia State.

He said the wife died as a result of the alleged negligence and deceit of the mother-in-law in depriving the daughter Jessica Olua of proper prenatal care during pregnancy labour and delivery.

Jessica Olua Chukwu was said to have passed away in Aba during childbirth as a result of complications of the placenta only, arising from poor medical watch during the period of her pregnancy labour and child delivery

Speaking with ABN TV, Mr. Chukwu, who was married to his wife in March 2023, said there has not been any form of spousal abuse in their union.

Narrating what happened, Mr. Chukwu who resides in Lagos said immediately after their marriage, he took his wife along with him to Lagos and even invited her mum on January 2024 to stay with them to look after her during her first and second trimesters.

According to him, when she was taken in, he registered her at a renowned medical centre in Lagos, where she was undergoing antenatal care with clinical attention.

He claimed to have paid in full throughout her pregnancy and antenatal period along with adequate care he gave her.

He narrated that a point, Jessica's mother sometime in May 2024 before her return trip to Aba where she lives, demanded that her daughter be brought home, when the pregnancy was at its 7th month (which fell on June 2024) so that she could take adequate care of her.

Mr. Chukwu said he was reluctant to let her embark on the journey to Aba to meet her mother, but later obliged and supported the request by making all necessary arrangements and even accompanied her to the inlaw's house in Aba. The journey was made through GUO Jibowu branch transport service. The journey was made on 28 June 2024.

While she was in Aba, he said he ensured that he took care of her by providing the basic things she needed. She stayed in Aba within the period of 28 June 2024 until 21 August 2024.

“I sent feeding money monthly, amounting to ₦47,000, which can be verified through bank statements. I also sent toiletries and body health products in bulk from Lagos,” he explained, emphasizing his commitment to his wife even while she was at her mother's house for child delivery.

TRAGIC CHILDBIRTH

On August 21, 2024, Jessica entered into labour as her due time for delivery of her child had come. However, it was not at the hospital, but at her mother's home. Even though I sent N25,000 to Jessica Olua as a transport allowance to convey her to where she would deliver her child. Due to the deceit and negligence of my mother-in-law, both she and Jessica Olua stayed back at home for delivery.

Complications, however, arose as reports had it that the baby's placenta refused to come out.

According to Mr. Chukwu, his wife Jessica, had not disclosed that she was in active labour throughout their phone conversations the previous night, which was 20 August 2024. Apparently, this was done to conceal their intention of not utilising the transport allowance for the intended purpose.

He was surprised to hear that she was dead shortly after delivery. This was the only information he received from his inlaws

He insisted that he had no quarrel with the wife and could not have been beating her from Lagos while she was in Aba from the month of June to August.

“All our communication before her death showed no signs of conflict or distress. I have WhatsApp chats and call logs as evidence, and they will be presented in court,” he said.

“Jessica and I had a peaceful relationship. There were no issues of violence or abuse (you may verify this from the tenants where I reside in Lagos). My wife’s passing was a tragic medical event, not a result of my foul play,” he maintained.

He wondered why an autopsy was not requested and conducted by his inlaws before her burial.

Following Jessica’s death, Mr. Chukwu said he travelled to Aba to seek answers to the circumstances surrounding his wife's death.

He met with hostility as the family of his late wife attacked him and his brother. “My in-laws attacked me and my brother. I sustained various degrees of wound, including profuse bleeding on the face, dislocation on the leg, and swollen skull. It was the Rapid Response Squad, Eziama division of the police who were alerted, and they intervened in rescuing us from what could be described as a near-death experience. Despite the pain of losing my wife, I have been accused of unfounded crimes,” he recounted.

After the tragic incident, Samuel and his brother went and informed the CPS Aba division of the situation and registered the case of attempted murder on Samuel Chukwu with pictorial evidence. It was the DPO who issued a police report for Samuel Chukwu to be treated at the hospital of his choice.

Mr. Chukwu has urged members of the public to ignore the narrative that he killed his wife, insisting that the allegation is false and unfounded.

He said his lawyer Chief Empero Gabriel Ogbonna & Co is gathering evidence, including medical reports from the hospitals where Jessica had her routine medical checkups, antenatal bookings and clinical investigations in Lagos, financial records, and communication logs, to present during court proceedings to prove his innocence.

“This loss has been devastating for me and my family. I loved my wife and invested in her happiness, health, education, personal development, and well-being. (I have all the bank statements proof to back up these claims)These accusations are not only false but also hurtful,” he stated.

Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ABN TV reports.

Chidoka revealed that he had submitted his resignation letter to his PDP ward in Anambra State earlier in the day. According to him, the decision to part ways with the party is rooted in his desire to dedicate more time to his non-profit organization, the Athena Centre, which focuses on governance and policy reforms.

“Earlier today, I sent a letter to my ward in Anambra State resigning officially from the PDP. I am leaving the PDP; I am leaving politics for some time. I am focusing on the Athena Centre,” Chidoka stated during the interview.

The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has called on the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other discontented stakeholders to reconcile and rejoin the party.

The embattled chairman has faced criticism from party chieftains over his controversial reelection at the Nnewi convention, which some stakeholders argued lacked inclusivity. This discontent led Obi, Otti, and others to establish a 29-member caretaker committee in July, headed by former Finance Minister Nnenadi Usman, to oversee an expanded election of new executives across all levels.

However, a recent victory at the Federal High Court in Abuja reaffirmed Abure as the legitimate national chairman of the Labour Party. Since the ruling, Abure has intensified efforts to mend fences with aggrieved members and restore unity.

Speaking on the party’s current state, Abure denied allegations of a crisis, stating, “I want to say there is no more crisis in the party. The court has said there is only one leader in LP. And if there is a dispute in the country or anywhere, the only place you can go for reprieve is the court.

“It was said that our national convention didn’t follow due process. That was why people went to court. INEC said we didn’t follow due process and we went to court. The court said the convention was in line with the party constitution, electoral act, and the constitution of the land. INEC has since obeyed it, and we are working very closely with the commission.”

He further urged all disenchanted members to reconcile with the party, emphasizing forgiveness and unity. “All those who feel offended should come back to the party. We have forgiven all those who perceived they had done us one thing or the other. I am not angry. We have put it behind us and LP is one big family,” he added.

Abure also highlighted the economic challenges facing Nigerians, urging both leaders and citizens to reflect and contribute to national development. He emphasized the need for electoral reform to ensure the emergence of competent leaders with integrity.

“Our country today is at a crossroads. It is a time for all of us to do a sober reflection. The problem is not just down to leadership. It also involves the followership,” he noted.

The heartbreaking story of Mr. Peter Ukaegbu has captured widespread attention following a tragic stampede at Christ the King Cathedral (CKC) in Aba, ABN TV reports.

Peter lost his wife, Emmanuella Igbokwe Peter Ukaegbu, and their young daughter, Onyinyechi Prisca Ukaegbu, in the devastating incident.

For Peter, November 30, 2024, was supposed to be a joyous occasion. He and Emmanuella had planned to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary in Port Harcourt. Instead, the day turned into a nightmare as he woke up to the news of their untimely deaths at the same church where they exchanged their vows a decade ago.

In a deeply emotional Facebook post, Peter recounted the tragic irony of their final moments. Emmanuella had begun her Sunday as usual, waking early to prepare meals and bathe their children before heading to the Corpus Christi procession at CKC. Unbeknownst to her, the sacred venue would become the site of her and her daughter’s demise.

“This double tragedy has devastated me, thrown me into mourning, uprooted my joy, and made me restless,” Peter wrote. His grief was palpable as he described the profound sense of vulnerability and fear consuming him. “I used to think I was courageous and strong, but I now realize I am lighter than a banana leaf. I don’t know where to start. The level of fear in me can’t be imagined.”

Reflecting on the bitter irony of the tragedy, he lamented, “It is unfortunate that the venue where you wedded was the same venue that consumed you and your daughter.”

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has arrested five suspects involved in trans-border gunrunning and recovered a cache of weapons, including 17 rifles, a revolver pistol, and ammunition, ABN TV reports.

The suspects—Adamu Noma, Matthew Audu, Andrew Poyi, Aminu Sani, and Aminu Talha—were apprehended on November 18, 2024, by operatives of the Force Intelligence Bureau Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT). A thorough search of their premises uncovered 10 locally fabricated AK-47 rifles, five Israeli-made AK-47 rifles, one revolver pistol, a pump-action rifle, 20 rounds of AK-47 ammunition, and a welding machine believed to be used for manufacturing weapons.

This operation marks another milestone in the NPF’s campaign to tackle crime and insecurity nationwide. A near-tragic accident disrupted the quiet of Lagos Street by St. Finbars Road junction in Umuahia, Abia State last night as a runaway truck wreaked havoc around 8 p.m.

According to information gathered by ABN TV, a big truck reportedly experienced brake failure and subsequently lost control, crashing into a high-tension electric pole. The impact caused significant damage to the pole, electric wires, and several nearby shops.

Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. However, the aftermath has left affected shop owners counting their losses, while residents in the area may face power disruptions due to the damaged electrical infrastructure.

Efforts to contact the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen, for comments on the incident have so far been unsuccessful.

Barely two weeks after his over N400m empowerment in his constituency, the member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Amobi Ogah has announced that his foundation will offset the WAEC fee of 500 students from the constituency.

A qualification exam has been fixed to take place where those who meet the minimum benchmark will be selected to benefit from the 2025 WAEC exam.

Residents of Adelabu Close, off Azikiwe Road in Umuahia, Abia State have begged the State government to reinstall the entrance gate to their area, which was demolished on Monday by an agency of the State government, Umuahia Capital Development Agency (UCDA).

The residents who spoke through Mr Ifeanyichukwu Christian said that the entrance gate was pulled down without a prior notice to the residents.

According to him, the area is a Close which terminates at Umuahia township stadium, and is inhabited by responsible residents whose data is maintained.

He added that the Adelabu Close has been peaceful without records of crime since the gate was erected some years ago and wondered why it was pulled down.

The spokesperson of the residents explained that the gate is only closed at night to provide security but is open during the day.

He further said that the residents of the area have been obedient to the administration of the present administration of Governor Alex Otti by maintaining a clean environment and also keeping records of those who live in the area.

Mr Christian said that his area is different from Adelabu Estate where similar demolitions were carried out, saying that

"Adelabu Estate is an open access road from Azikiwe to Bende Road. Nobody is against that but our own is a Close, that is why we are pleading with His Excellency who is a listening Governor to help us so that the entrance gate can be reinstated", the representative of the residents appealed.

Some Traders from the A-Line section of Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State staged a protest over the tragic death of their colleague, Ikem Uchendu, ABN TV reports.

Uchendu, succumbed to injuries after reportedly being stabbed with a bottle during an altercation. He was hospitalized for days before passing away.

The traders alleged that the attack was carried out by individuals sent by the developer handling the market's remodeling, Blessed Henken International Limited.

According to the protesters, Uchendu was targeted for reclaiming his lock-up shop, which had allegedly been reassigned to other individuals.

In their demonstration, the traders demanded government intervention to deliver justice for Uchendu’s family, end what they describe as ceaseless harassment in the market, and ensure that displaced shop owners regain their properties.

The protest adds to an ongoing conflict between the traders and Blessed Henken International Limited, which they accuse of disregarding directives from the Abia State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the recovery of government properties, funds, and related matters.

The affected traders had previously petitioned the state governor, alleging that shops in the remodeled buildings were being sold to wealthy buyers instead of being offered to the original owners, as stipulated in the MoU.

A devastating stampede occurred at the Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC) in Aba on Sunday, November 25th, resulting in the tragic loss of two women's lives and leaving several others injured, ABN TV reports.

The incident happened after the procession of Christ the King when a large crowd gathered at the venue. Security personnel blocked the entrance, causing the women to fall in the ensuing chaos. Despite being rushed to Mendel Hospital in Aba, they sadly succumbed to their injuries.

A young boy, Peter Clever, who survived the stampede, is currently receiving medical care at Victorious Hospital. He has made a heartfelt appeal for help in reconnecting with his family. Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti says his government has resolved to rejig the security architecture of the State, aiming to address escalated attacks on security personnel in the State, even as the Chief Executive said his government has decided to smoke out criminal elements jeopardizing the security of lives and property, ABN TV reports.

Addressing the press after an emergency security council meeting the governor said with actions being put in place, insecurity will be a thing of the past in Abia.

"We have all sat down to look at the security architecture of the State and I am happy that we have resolved to rejig the security architecture to ensure that something like these (attacks) will be a thing of the past.

"We also have taken a decision to smoke out all the criminal elements from wherever they are hiding.

"We are happy to assure you that we can deal with them accordingly. We have the commitment of the security agencies.

"We have also agreed to redouble our efforts in various areas where there are possibilities of attacks", a statement by a Government House Press officer, Divine Nwankwo said.

The Governor warned criminal elements sternly that Abia would not be safe for them.

"We want to give a notice. If you are a criminal in Abia State, whether you call yourself bandit or kidnapper, whatever you call yourself, this place will not be safe for you. So that is the warning". Gov. Otti declared.

The Chief Security Officer of the State, who said that the recent unfortunate attacks should not be taken as the current situation in Abia reassured Abia people, residents and visitors that the government is more than competent to deal with security challenges in the State.

He said he would not want anybody to be afraid assuring that the government would do everything possible to ensure the safety of lives and property of everyone living or visiting Abia State

Governor Alex Otti commiserated with the Nigeria Army and Nigeria Police on the unfortunate incidents and attack on their men at Ekenobizi, Ubakala and Ohafia and assured that such would not repeat itself and added that he would visit the families of the deceased.

A fierce gun battle is currently underway between the Nigerian Army and unknown gunmen in Mbata, Umuchima Village, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, ABN TV reports.

According to reports, the Nigerian Army deployed over 15 Hillux and armored vehicles to the area as early as 6 am today to engage the unknown gunmen, who have been camping in the village near the river bordering Abia State and Mbaise in Imo State.

Soldiers have taken over the junctions leading to and from the village, while others are facing off against unknown gunmen in the bush.

As of the time of filing this report, the sounds of gunfire can still be heard in the area.

This development comes amidst rising regional tensions, with similar incidents reported in recent times.

Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa on Wednesday led an operation along Asaga Road by Terry Key in Ohafia in Ohafia local government area of the state in a bid to apprehend hoodlums who ambushed and attacked officers on patrol duty in the early hours of the day.

ABN TV has brought you a report on the attack in the community by unknown assailants, targeting policemen on patrol duty.

ASP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the spokesperson of the police command in a statement on Wednesday said the hoodlums came under severe resistance from the police officers, causing them to flee the scene as the attack was repelled.

Chinaka said during the rescue operation led by the CP, one of the attack victims, ASP Etim Obungha was successfully rescued unhurt as well as Corporal Chukwu Odoemelam, who sustained bullet injury during the attack but promptly rushed to the hospital and is currently responding to treatment.

She added, "Tragically, the body of ASP Etet Uboulo who did not survive the earlier attack was recovered.

"In the course of the operation, some exhibits were recovered from the crime scene and Investigation is ongoing with the view to tracking down the hoodlums. Watertight security measures have been emplaced as tactical teams, operatives from Ohafia Area Command in collaboration with the army component from 14 Brigade, Ohafia are currently on patrol in the area."

The police boss in the state assured that all Abians that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be apprehended to face justice.

Popular Abia-born journalist and online publisher Ifeanyi Okali has called on the state governor, Dr. Alex Otti, to engage his predecessors and devise measures to solve the state's growing challenges.

In an open letter to the governor on Thursday, Okali decried the threat of insecurity in various parts of the state which he said has affected economic activities.

"I'm writing to you today as a concerned citizen of Abia State, urging you to prioritize the security of our great state. While you've made significant strides in other areas, security remains the cornerstone of progress. No city thrives under insecurity, and we must tackle this challenge head-on", he noted.

He therefore advised that Otti's predecessors, including Sen. Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Sen. Theodore Orji, and Okezie Ikpeazu, and other stakeholders should be invited for a meeting so that workable measures are adopted to reduce security threats in the state.

"I recommend putting aside party and individual differences and meeting with former Governors of the state to adopt some of the effective measures they implemented during their tenure (nobody knows all). By building upon past successes, we can curb the current security threats plaguing our state.

"It's crucial that media aides and government officials - new and old Abia refrain from politicizing security issues. Assigning blame amidst incessant security threats is a misplaced priority. Every Abian life matters, regardless of party affiliation or background.

Hon. Amobi Ogah, Member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, has strongly condemned the attack on Representative Ginger Onwusibe's motorcade in Abia State, which sadly claimed the life of a dedicated security aide.

The ambush by unidentified gunmen occurred on Sunday night at Ubakala junction, Umuahia South Local Government Area. Fortunately, Rep. Onwusibe was not in the vehicle at the time of the attack.

Ogah emphasized the need for a swift and thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety and security of leaders and their teams.

He also urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent such senseless violence from happening again.

The soft-spoken businessman who has made remarkable achievements in the oil and gas sector had thwarted the dream of Onyejeocha to get 20 years at the House of Representatives as representative of the people of Isuikwuato/Umunneochi federal constituency.

She spent 16 years in the House, which some constituents say left them with no impact.

Onyejeocha since she was defeated has reportedly taken Ogah to court three times, challenging his election victory and refusing to move on.

But determined not to be distracted and to reverse the years of poor representation, Hon. Ogah has done series of empowerment for his constituents since he assumed office.

To mark his one year in office last week, he rolled out what has been described as the mother of all empowerments, which saw the highly satisfied constituents benefit from the distribution of items worth over N400 million.

The items distributed include cars, mini-buses, tricycles, grinding machines, sewing machines, and bags of fertilizers.

At least one policeman has been feared dead and one seriously injured following an attack by gunmen in Ugwu Abba Asaga Ohafia in Ohafia local government area of Abia State, ABN TV reports.

Abia State police command has confirmed attack on the convoy of the member of the House of Representatives representing the Nsiala-Ngwa North/South constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe in which one policeman was killed while another escaped, ABN TV reports.

The command said the policemen in Hilux van had earlier dropped off the lawmaker in Umuahia but ambushed on their way going home.

In a statement made available to ABN TV on Monday signed by the spokesperson of Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen C Chinaka, she said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing assailants.

Narrating how the incident happened, she said, "On 17/11/2024, at about 20:30hrs, two police officers, from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 4, Makurdi Inspector Dunna Jatau and Inspector Bala Mohammed assigned to Honorable Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives representing the Nsiala-Ngwa North/South constituency, were ambushed by armed assailants while on official duty in Umuahia.

"The officers were in a Police Toyota Hilux vehicle after accompanying and dropping off the Honorable in Umuahia. On their way, near Umuahia South Local Government Area Secretariat in Ubakala, their vehicle was intercepted by armed men dressed in black attire, operating in a Toyota Corolla with tinted windows. The assailants blocked the path of the police vehicle and opened fire. Tragically, Insp. Bala Mohammed sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Insp Dunna Jatau and the driver escaped the attack.

"The area was immediately combed by officers of the command as comprehensive search operation was launched to locate the attackers. Tactical teams have been deployed to track down the fleeing suspects. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.

"The Abia State Police Command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. We urge the public to remain calm, stay security conscious, go about their activities, and report any suspicious persons or vehicles to the nearest police station."

Abia State government has decried increasing rate of violent crimes in the state, accusing the opposition of working with external forces to distract the government from its core objective of providing governance, ABN TV reports.

This is in response to an attack on the convoy of a member of House of Representatives, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe on Sunday night in which a policeman was killed.

In a statement signed by Special Adviser to Abia State Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the state government said the strategy adopted by the opposition started when they realized that churning out lies and fabrications against the government in pretentious posturing as “opposition” has failed to gain currency amongst Abia people.

The state government vowed a decisive action against anyone attempting to play politics with the lives and property of Abians.

The statement reads in part, "While the Abia State government is one that is known and acknowledged locally, nationally and internationally as a peace-loving government, devoid of involvement in politics of violence, division, and destruction, it must be noted that we will not yield to blackmail or intimidation. It needs to be understood that the government will not sit idly by and watch any person or group of persons unleash violence on innocent and peace-loving citizens of the state.

"Having sworn to an oath to protect the lives and property of Abians, including every inch of Abia territory, the government wishes to declare as follows:

"1. That those behind the attacks on security agents and innocent civilians, including the kidnapping of law-abiding citizens to create anarchy and instill fear in the minds of Abians and visitors, after their failure to use lies and propaganda to incite Abians should understand that the government will bring its full capacity and institutional forces to bear in order to smoke them out.

"2. That the state government led by Governor Alex Otti, is prepared and equal to the task of safeguarding the lives and property of people living in any part of Abia State and will execute this noble obligation to the fullest without let or hindrance.

"3. That a new counter-offensive has just been launched by the government to decimate every structure of terror erected or being erected in any Abia territory by criminals, hence citizens are enjoined not to harbour any person or persons they do not know, to avoid falling victims.

"4. All innocent and peace-loving Abia residents are enjoined to go about their legitimate businesses without fear or panic, as the government is determined to ensure their protection at all times.

"5. Kidnapping, armed robbery, ritual killings, and other criminal activities and heinous crimes are alien to the culture of our people, therefore, Abians should cooperate with the government and security agencies to get rid of all criminal elements who are desirous of polluting our land with their sacrilegious activities.

"6. The government wishes to strongly warn that anyone that attempts to play politics with the lives and property of innocent Abians should be ready to face the consequences, as the government will no longer tolerate such acts, no matter who is behind them.

"7. Community leaders and traditional leaders are enjoined to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the law enforcement agencies for appropriate actions

"8. Finally, the government wishes to call on parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and loved ones, in order to ensure they do not indulge in any form of criminal activities, as the government will not yield to any form of emotional blackmail or appeal in any matter of established criminality."

A policeman attached to the member representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe has been feared dead, ABN TV reports.

The incident happened around 9pm at Ubakala Umuahia South.

According to a police source, gunmen dressed in black and wearing police-style armor jackets had blocked the convoy of the House of Representatives member with a Toyota Corolla.

The lawmaker was not in the vehicle when the incident happened, but at least two police officers and a driver were.

The gunmen opened fire on the escorts after they identified themselves as police officers.

In the process, a police officer was killed, while another officer was injured.

The attackers fled the scene, and the police station at Ubakala responded with gunfire.

Engr. Augustine Uchenna Stephen, a former aide to Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, the immediate past governor of Abia State, has been kidnapped by gunmen, ABN TV reports.

According to sources, the kidnapping occurred on Thursday evening while Stephen was driving home from work. The assailants ambushed him, pointed a gun at him, and forcibly took him and his vehicle to an unknown location. His vehicle was later found abandoned along the Umuahia-Aba expressway.

Stephen, a native of Umuogo Ubakala in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State, is a prominent businessman and politician based in Port Harcourt and Umuahia.

ABN TV reports that He had recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Labor Party on March 1st, 2024, making his declaration official at his Umuogo Ubakala ward.

As of the latest reports, Stephen's abductors have not established contact. This incident raises concerns about the escalating cases of kidnapping, car snatching, and violent crimes in Umuahia and Aba.

Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs has extolled the virtues of the former Chairman of Abia State Council of Ndi Eze, HRM Eze Ezo Ukandu, the Enyi Na Obiangwu of Imenyi Kingdom.

Eze Ukandu, who was the 3rd Chairman of Abia State Council of traditional rulers and also, a prominent figure in the creation of Abia State, died at the age of 87 years.

Speaking at JAAC house in Umuahia when the body of the late monarch was received by Abia traditional rulers, the Director of Chieftaincy Affairs in the Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Nnamdi Elekwachi who spoke on behalf of the ministry, described the late Eze Ezo Ukandu as one of the most prominent traditional rulers in Igbo land.

The ministry recalled the late monarch's contributions to the development of Abia State and listed his various achievements in industry, education, transportation, employment, and community development.

Also speaking at the event, the present Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Nto Mba, said that the departed monarch was a role model for Abia State traditional rulers, setting a precedent worthy of emulation.

Eze Mba who said that the Enyi Na Obiangwu of Imenyi kingdom promoted love and peace among traditional rulers, said that his legacies would always be there for generations to see.

He advised the children of the former Chairman of Ndi Eze to live in peace and to maintain the good legacies established by their departed father.

Other traditional rulers including Eze Uwakwe Ukaegbu, Eze Nzeneata Mbakwe, Eze Nelson Mmerengwa among others, said that the death of Eze Ezo Ukandu was a great loss to the traditional institution in the State.

At least two soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force of Operation UDO KA were killed in an early morning attack on Wednesday, 13 November 2024 at a checkpoint, ABN TV reports.

The Joint Task Force accused the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate the Eastern Security Network (ESN) of being responsible for the attack.

The troops were attacked at a checkpoint along Umuahia - Owerri Road in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State where they were deployed.

Following a superior firepower from the troops, the gunmen fled, leaving their vehicles.

"During the attack, the gallant troops were able to repel the attack forcing the irredentist to withdraw in disarray with gunshot wounds, abandoning one Sienna and one Lexus Jeep vehicles that were used for the attack.

"However, in the ensuing firefight two soldiers paid the supreme price", a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu for the Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA said.

Therefore, the Joint Task Force is appealing to the people of South East especially Abia State with relevant, reliable, and credible information that could help apprehend the group's fleeing members to come up with such.
