Ahead of his first anniversary in office on May 29, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has received an affirmative endorsement by the leadership of the Labour Party (LP) in the state and 17 local government areas.

Rising from an enlarged meeting which had in attendance the Governor, the entire party hierarchy in the state, all political appointees in the Executive Cabinet, elected members at the National and State Assemblies, and senior stakeholders, the Party unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Governor Otti, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said in a statement.

Representative Hon. Obi Aguocha, Ikwuano-Umuahia Federal Constituency, who moved the motion to pass the vote of confidence, said Governor Otti, within 11 months of assumption of office into a four-year tenure, has made the party proud as he had surpassed all expectations, the statement added.

Aguocha, who moved the motion while giving a vote of thanks to round off the meeting convened on Sunday at the Governor's residence, was supported by the member representing Obingwa-Osisioma-Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency, Hon. Munachim Alozie, who seconded the motion. The Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, put the decision to vote, to which the meeting roared unanimously in approval.

The meeting, according to stakeholders, was called, primarily, for the party hierarchy in the state and the local government areas, to familiarise themselves with the various appointees of government, including members of the State Executive Council and local government Mayors.

Governor Otti, who was pleasantly surprised at the show of solidarity and confidence by his party leadership and other stakeholders, expressed gratitude to God that people had taken note of the "modest" achievements recorded by his administration in less than one year in office.

"We must thank God that some few modest results are showing. We could have worked hard, like we have done in the last 11 months, without anything to show," Governor Otti said.

The Governor informed the meeting that he met Abia at a sub-zero level, negative, contrary to some widely held view that the state was at ground zero. According to him, it would have been better if the administration had met the state at ground zero, "but we were coming from negative. If you have to come from negative to ground zero, you have to work very hard.

A Delta State High Court in Effurun has awarded N30 million damages against popular Nigerian blogger, Linda Ikeji, for a libellous publication against the Neo-Black Movement (NBM) of Africa.

The lawsuit had Registered Trustees of NBM of Africa, Ese Kakor, Felix Kupa and Mayor Onyebueke as the Claimants against Linda Ikeji as Defendant.

In a ruling on Monday, in Suit No: EHC/210/2021, Presiding Justice Roli Daibo-Harriman, also ordered the absent Defendant, to pay N300,000 as being the cost of litigation.

The Defendant was further ordered to place a publication on her blog and national dailies retracting the libellous publication for which the NBM dragged her to the court, just as she is restrained from further damaging publications against the Claimants.

The NBM of Africa took to court action after she failed to honour a letter by the Claimant demanding retraction and apology over the libellous article published on her blog on Oct. 19, 2021.

The blogger in her publication of 19 October 2021 allegedly labelled the NBM of Africa as a dreaded cult group, , and criminal organisation among other names.

The Claimants approached the court, praying for N1bn damages and an unreserved apology to be published on her blog and two national dailies among others.

Justice Daibo-Harriman, in her ruling, described the tags, including dreaded cultist group, and criminal organisation as used in the Defendant’s publication as all defamatory.

Counsel to the Claimants, Kelvin Agbroko, noted that the ruling, “Will serve as a lesson to bloggers that it is not every item you publish. It is good to verify information before making a publication.

He said, “NBM of Africa is a legal organisation duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The publication made by the Defendant against my client has been cleared that it was a damaging publication.

“NBM is good to go, we are going to take all necessary steps to enforce the terms of the judgment against her. It was an erudite judgement that is all-encompassing and will be difficult to fault.”

President of the NBM of Africa, Ese Kakor said the outcome of the case had been on for about two years.

He said, “What Ikeji did was just to sell in a bid to defame the character of NBM of Africa. It is very wrong.

“I advised other bloggers not to follow the same steps as they may also face similar litigation. Do not try and defame peoples’ character. NBM has nothing to do with cultism, . It is not a criminal organisation but a well-registered organisation.”

Dr. Chimezie Okwuonu, the Chief Medical Director of Abia Specialist Hospital, has been conferred with the esteemed Fellowship of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to kidney care.

The Abia State All Progressives Congress (APC) Organizing Secretary, Chief Obinna Atuonu is dead. He died at the age of 65.

He died on Sunday during a church service in Aba, the commercial capital of the state where he was addressing the congregation, ABN TV gathered.

His Only brother, Dr. Chiedozie Atuonu told ABN TV that on the fateful day, he got a call to rush to Aba from Umuahia where he was. According to him, the caller told him that his late brother was feeling critically ill.

A two-man robbery gang which allegedly specializes in robbing passengers of their belongings, popularly called one-chance has escaped being burnt alive in Umuahia, Abia State capital, ABN TV reports.

According to sources familiar with their modus operandi, the suspects who operate with tricycles, better known as keke usually hypnotize their victims or threaten them with sharp objects, before robbing them of their belongings.

They are also alleged to engage in phone hacking which gives them access to transfer victims' money through the banking application stored in their phones.

Luck however ran out of them around the popular Golden Guinea Breweries along Aba road in Umuahia when past victims upon boarding their keke raised alarm, attracting the neighbourhood.

ABN TV gathered that this attracted them a merciless beating, even as their tricycle was fatally destroyed.

Observing that they stood the risk of being set ablaze by the angry mob, the suspect allegedly confessed their crimes and started begging for mercy, a resident said.

A renowned security expert and former Director of Operations of the Department of State Services (DSS) Chief Ray Nkemdirim, has called for a revolution in the usage of artificial intelligence (AI) in Africa to curb the continent’s rising security challenges, ABN TV reports.

He made the call at the National Institute for Security Studies Abuja on Tuesday, while addressing participants of Executive Intelligence Management Course 17.

The nine-month course for top-level security chiefs and management staff of strategic agencies, draws participants from Nigeria and other African countries including Ghana, Gambia, Niger, Chad, and Rwanda.

In his paper titled “Artificial Intelligence and Intelligence Gathering: Challenges and Prospects”, Chief Nkemdirim, advised that Nigeria and indeed other African countries should key into the enormous benefits of the fast-expanding global phenomenon of artificial intelligence (AI).

He said that if meaningful progress was to be made in the fight against terrorism, kidnappings, banditry, and other violent crimes, AI was the sure antidote.

He said reliance on traditional security practices and tactics alone will not produce effective results, as criminal elements were now adopting more sophisticated methods to commit crimes.

He therefore enjoined security agencies to be proactive in their operational approaches by adopting AI–driven measures to counter the worsening crime situation.

Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has described as reprehensible and repugnant the murder of Abia-born businessman, Emmanuel Okocha by a police officer in Aba on Saturday.

He therefore demanded a thorough investigation into the unfortunate incident, insisting that the police officer must be made to explain his aberrant behaviour.

Okocha, a native of Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of the State was reportedly gunned down on his way to the village by a police corporal, Obagi Njok attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) within the Aba Division for refusing to give ₦500 bribe to the police after going through his vehicle papers on demand at a checkpoint along Aba-Owerri road.

Incidentally, the Abia State Police Command has since announced the arrest of Njok.

Reacting to the unhealthy development through a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu on Sunday, Kalu who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State in the National Assembly said that the police authorities must ensure that justice is served in the matter.

He said that the officer involved must be brought to face the law and the corresponding punishment if found culpable, wondering why he jettisoned professionalism and the rules of engagement.

The Deputy Speaker said that the Nigerian laws are against the twin offenses of bribe and murder alleged to have been committed by the police officer while on duty.

A 500-level student of Abia State University (ABSU) Uturu, Emmanuel Victor attested for the murder of a fellow student, Emmanuel Uche in front of Miracle Lodge has confessed to the crime.

He along with others arrested for various crimes in Abia State was paraded at the police headquarters in Umuahia on Sunday, ABN TV reports.

He said he killed Emmanuel Uche because both of them belonged to two rival cult groups.

According to Victor, while he belongs to the Vikings cult group, the late Uche was a member of Aiye.

He said a day before the killing of the late Uche, he (Uche) along with members of his gang had gone looking for a member of his (Victor) gang but could not see him.

According to him, Uche and his gang members accosted another member of the Vikings and collected his phone, then took it to Miracle Lodge, the same place where Uche was killed.

The suspect along with members of his gang mobilized for reinforcement the next day and Miracle Lodge and the ensuing fracas led to the killing of Uche.

A 27-year-old man identified as Daniel Otuechere has been arrested by men of the Abia State Police Command over the alleged murder of his neighbour, 23-year-old Hope Chinedu Prosper.

The father of the deceased Hope Oluoha, 52, who resides in Agbo Emede Ibeku Umuahia had earlier in the week reported to the police that the accused person took his son to an unknown destination and returned home with his lifeless body.

An anonymous source told ABN TV that the body was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead.

Detectives from the Command have visited the scene and the body of the deceased has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

An officer of the Nigeria Police Force responsible for the killing of Abia businessman identified as Mr. Emmanuel Okocha has been arrested.

Abia State Police Command in a statement made available to ABN TV on Saturday signed by the PRO, ASP Maureen Chinaka gave the name of the suspect as Police Corporal Obagi Njok.

He was attached to Abayi Police Division under Abia State Police Command and had shot at Mr. Emmanuel Okocha along Aba-Owerri Road, the statement said.

A businessman identified as Mr. Emmanuel Michael Okocha has been killed by a police officer seeking bribe along MCC Abayi-Aba, Abia State commercial capital.

The late businessman, a native of Abiriba in Ohafia local government area of the state was killed by the police officer, of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) unit of the Nigerian Police Force.

A source said the bereaved who had a complete vehicle license had refused to offer bribe to the policeman, incurring his anger.

An eyewitness who was with the victims when the incident happened said they drove all the way from Abiriba on Wednesday, 17th day of April 2024 and entered Aba through Osisioma flyover.

On approaching opposite Abayi Girl's Secondary School, a team of Police Officers stopped them and demanded for the car documents and driver's licence of Mr. Emmanuel Michael Okocha which he quickly availed them.

According to him, after the check, the police officer returned the documents and started demanding for a tip. The late Emmanuel replied the Officer that he hadn't nothing to give him after wasting his time and started moving his car to leave the check point.

It was at this point that another policeman standing in front decided to shoot at him without provocation.

Mr. Emmanuel Michael Okocha was hit by the bullet and he was shouting that he has been shot and the Police Team ran into their car and drove off.

Policemen serving in Abia State are currently threading with utmost carefulness as the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie has vowed a decisive action against those extorting money from Abians, ABN TV reports.

The police boss handed the warning during a meeting with the Management Team, Area Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Team Commanders on Thursday.

The CP emphasized that professionalism among officers and men of the command must not be compromised.

He frowned at extortion and vowed to take drastic actions against erring officers.

CP Onwuemelie urged officers of the command to be steadfast and proactive in ensuring that all Abians are safe at all times. He stated that it is better to prevent crime than to detect it.

The council boss made this known when he played host to members of the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (OMPAN) Abia Chapter who came on a courtesy visit in his office in Umuahia.

He said the local government is working so hard to depend less on Joint Allocation Committee (JAAC), by reviving the agriculture sector.

He assured that he would support the Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria(OMPAN), as the government needs the media to optimize its functions.

Continuing, he revealed that he has international partners who were very willing to synergize with the Council to achieve that his vision, and added that plans were on the way to grade Uloma Farm Settlement to make it very accessible.

High Chief Ikeji said on his assumption of office as the Mayor, he was conscious of the past image of the State and, hence determined to change the narratives of governance by embarking on many transformative projects.

Ikeji described himself as a media-friendly person, and assured that his administration would continue to partner and engage the media in the area of information and communication.

He mentioned some of his achievements since his assuming office to include, restoration of electricity and water in the Council, grading and refilling of about 27 roads in the hinterland of Umuahia North using about 200 trips of sand, desilting of drainages and evacuation of over 200 trucks of sand, training of about 36 Youths on ICT and artificial intelligence, reviving of agriculture sector, relocation of transport parks to places that will be conducive for them, installation of street lights in Okigwe park, building of Public convenience for those in Okigwe park area, flagged off 120 Youths skill acquisition program for both indigenes and residents of Umuahia North, which he promised empowered them after the training, especially those who would take the training seriously.

According to him,"I intend to carry out a complete renovation of the entire Umuahia North and I am already designing it. The Council is going to witness a tremendous transformation. I can assure you that there will be tremendous improvement under my watch.

"We are getting enough funds to do projects and enough cooperation from the Governor.

"The Governor has even challenged us to bring mega projects to embark on for the Governor to fund them.

"The Governor does not owe salaries, any Civil Servant that says he is not receiving salaries is lying," he said

A veteran movie star, Digidi Dunhill has frowned over the recent death of a Nollywood actor, Junior Pope, saying his death was avoidable.

He lost his life during the shooting of a movie titled, “The Other Side of Life” in Asaba, Delta State. A boat he and the cast and crew were travelling in capsized, leading to his death along with three others.

Reacting to the development, Dunhill while featuring in ABN TV’s ‘Talk Make I Talk,’ said the producers of the movie did not do enough to cater for the welfare of the cast and crew.

According to him, the budget for the shooting of a full movie now was used for the payment of one artiste in his days, saying movie producers now have killed the industry with poor welfare.

“What happened to Junior Pope is very painful, It’s very annoying. Anyway, you don’t blame the dead,” he stated.

“During our time, nobody can enter boat without a life jacket. We will tell the producer, the executive producer that without life jacket, nobody is shooting. There were few of us who were like the police of the industry, once there is a little lack of welfare of artists, we won’t shoot your movie, once there is no security, we will mandate you to provide it.

“Now, they shoot at 2am and 3am and there is no transport, they will expect you to go to your house,” he added.

A final year student of the Accounting Department of Abia Polytechnic killed in a fatal accident near the school gate is set for burial.

Miss Mary Ogechi Ezekiel, will be buried at her country home on 18th April 2024, in Ndi Ogbu Amakwu, Igbere, Abia State.

She was one of the brightest students in the school and was recently been recognized as the best student in her field.

A burial arrangement released on behalf of the family by Ezekiel Abel Uko said her body will leave St Francis Mortuary, Aba-Owerri Road, and proceed to her hometown where it will be laid to rest.

A candlelight procession has earlier been held in her honour at her Omuma Road, Aba Abia State.

The 27-year-old had visited the school on Tuesday, the 5th of March 2024, to collect her final results. Little did she however know that this would be her last journey.

She was feared dead while crossing the road near the school gate when she was fatally crushed by a fast-moving heavy truck. The impact of the accident was devastating, leading to her untimely demise.

She was preparing for her upcoming National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, a dream that has been cut short.

Members of Okwuta-Ibeku community in Umuahia North local government area of Abia State have called on the state government to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the son, an Air Force Cadet, Emmanuel Onyeomereneche.

The National Defence Academy student was last week Tuesday found dead in the swimming pool of the Damgrete hotel, a death the people of the community say is suspicious.

ABN TV had last week broke the news of the death of an Abia-born military trainee who had till July this year to be commissioned.

Women of the community, adorned in back attires during a peaceful protest to Government House Umuahia on Tuesday had carried placards with different inscriptions.

Some of the inscriptions read, "So Damgrete (sic) is another otokoto in Abia", "Obeji Valentine is this the meaning of a friend" and other inscriptions.

Members of the community said they do not believe that Mr. Emmanuel Onyeomereneche with his training as an upcoming naval officer could have drowned in an ordinary swimming pool and accused the friend, one Valentine Okpechi, and the hotel management of complacency.

They described the death of their son is a huge loss to the entire community.

In their speeches earlier, the Public Relations Officer of Okwuta-Isieke Autonomous Community, Mr. Chibuzor Onwukamuche, the head of the family, Prince James Onyeomereneche, and the woman leader, Mrs. Happiness Ebere said that they came to register their grievances to the Governor over the death of their son.

Receiving the protesters, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander Macdonald Uba (Rtd.) assured them that investigations would be thoroughly carried out to unravel the cause of the death.

Abia State Government has vowed to investigate the death of Emmanuel Onyeomereneche, an Abia-born Cadet Officer, who was found dead in the swimming pool of the Hotel Royal Damgrate, Umuahia recently.

Addressing the people of Okwuta-Ibeku in Umuahia North LGA who came to protest the death of the deceased who is their son, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Navy Commander Macdonald Uba (Rtd.) assured that investigations would be thoroughly carried out to unravel the cause of the death. He said, whoever that was found culpable would surely be brought to book.

Navy Commander Uba, who described the incident as unfortunate said he would bring the matter to the Governor while sympathizing with the immediate family and entire people of Okwuta -Ibeku over the death.

ABN TV had reported that an Air Force Cadet, Mr. Emmanuel Onyeomereneche had lost his life under controversial circumstances in the hotel. In response, his colleagues in the military launched an investigation, arresting the F&B manager of the hotel and others. In the course of investigation, he was tortured to death by the military.

The Special Adviser commended the protesters for not taking laws into their hands. He urged them to remain law-abiding, assuring that the outcome of the investigation would be made known to them.

"It is unfortunate that a cadet officer of the Nigeria Defence Academy was found dead in a swimming pool in Damgrate. We know how much it takes the federal government to train one cadet officer.

"We have listened to your complaints. We will take measures to brief His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Abia State on the matter. Whatever has happened has happened. We leave it to God but proper investigation will be carried out to ensure that if there were perpetrators of this act, it will be unraveled.

"This incident has caused other ripple effects thereafter. We will thoroughly investigate the matter, at the end of the day justice will be served. I know how you feel. I was once a cadet, and I know how it would have been for my village if something like this happened.

"I enjoin you to remain law abiding until we revert the outcome of the investigations, including the death of the manager of the hotel. We will investigate all these things and get back to you."

An Abia State High Court sitting in Umuahia has adjourned till June 5, a case of defamation instituted by a former Governor of the state, Senator Theodore Orji, against a Board of Trustees (BOT) and national caucus member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Benjamin Apugo.

Senator Orji who filed the case on September 9, 2020, claimed that Prince Apugo defamed his character by publicly saying he (Orji) looted Abia funds when he was governor.

During the last hearing of the case earlier in the year, it was adjourned to April 16, for the continuation of the pre-trial hearing.

At yesterday’s hearing, the court presided by Justice A.C Chijioke observed that the statement of defence filed by the defence counsel, Oliver Amuzie could not be traced in the court’s file.

Based on the agreement reached by both the claimant and defence counsels, Justice Chijioke adjourned the case to June 4, for the statement of defence to be traced and for the continuation of the pre-trial process.

Speaking after the adjournment, the defence counsel, Amuzie said the crux of the matter was that his client made a statement the claimant said he was referred to as a looter, that he looted the funds of Abia State when he was governor.

Amuzie said his client had no apologies to make to the claimant since what he said had already been published in various media outlets and as such was in the public domain.

The defence counsel said his client only made a fair comment based on what was already in the public domain.

Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja has ordered the investigation of killing a hotel manager in Abia, Mr Achimugu James Etubi by officers of the Nigerian Army.

This is contained in a statement on Sunday signed by the Director Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu.

ABN TV has reported that the hotel manager was killed when the army officers were investigating the alleged death of their colleague, Air Force Officer Cadet Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyemereche in the hotel where he worked.

The Chief of Army Staff says those found culpable in the death of the hotel manager will face the full wrath of the law.

The statement reads in part, "The NA extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased Manager Mr Achimugu James Etubi and the Nigerian Air Force Officer Cadet Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyemereche and assure the public that every effort will be made to ensure that justice is served. ABN TV had reported that an Air Force tarmac four Cadet identified as Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyeomereneche with registration number NDA 13257 has lost his life in Hotel Royal Damgrete, months to graduation from National Defence Academy where he is a student.

He died on Tuesday in the swimming pool of Damgrete Hotel under controversial circumstances.

One account has it that he had intentionally dived into the swimming pool with his trunk to swim during a hangout with his friends.

Worried by the death of their colleague, the military in the state arrested some staff and the hotel and took them for an interrogation.

In an interview in Umuahia, Dr. Steve Ihedigbo, Chairman/CEO of Hotel Royal Damgrete said after the interrogation of three of the hotel staff, including Mr. Etibu, a senior female military police officer ordered for a corporal punishment of his staff.

According to him, when the victim was rescued, there was nothing to suggest that he was drowned, saying his stomach was flat and water was not found in his system.

While suspecting a foul play, the Chairman alleged that one of the Cadet officers who had visited the hotel along with the late Onyeomereneche when the incident happened was brought before the military as a prime suspect.

He however expressed surprise that during the corporal punishment, he was among those detailed to beat his staff, alleging that during the punishment, he personally hit the F&B manager on his head to ensure he dies, apparently to conceal the circumstances behind the death of Onyeomereneche.

According to Ihedigbo, the late F&B manager was at the scene when everything happened and was in the right place to give testimony on what led to the death of Onyeomereneche, insisting that the colleague of the deceased has a question to answer.

On where the diver of the hotel was when the incident happened, he the chairman said he closed at 6pm, before the late Onyeomereneche and his friends visited the hotel.

He insists that his staff and the hotel are not complicit, urging for a thorough investigation on the death of the late Cadet.

Speaking virtually on the special edition of "Ben Kalu's Mandate", a call-in radio programme of FLO FM and ABN Radio, Umuahia, Abia State on Monday, the deputy speaker posited that the parliament, heeding the calls of Nigerians for its intervention in the matter will adopt a win-win approach in resolving the issues thereto.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu stated that Kalu's reaction however followed an inquiry from a call-in listener, Okafor Chinedum from Umuahia who sought to know the position of the parliament on the matter.

The Deputy Speaker said: "It's a general problem. While I was on my holidays, one of the things I was bothered with was a letter sent to me by the majority leader of the House on the need for us to intervene in a matter involving the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital power supply. They were disconnected because of this hike and they don't have the money to pay. We said it's an essential service. Something should be done about it while we look at other details.

"I can assure you that when we resume, it's one of the things we are going to look into. We will look at the both sides of the coin to know a win-win approach to it because we cannot suffocate also the investors, and also we cannot allow Nigerians to suffer unduly. So, it is one of the things we will look at by the time we resume and we will find a way to solving it."

Also responding to the second leg of the question by the same caller about the possibility of giving Nigerians a brand new constitution, leveraging the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Kalu said that it behooves the people to lead the debate and provide a practicable template for the national assembly to consider the merits and demerits.

"Yes, some school of thought has expressed view that they want a new constitution, drop the old one and pick up something new. Some elders known as The Patriots are also asking for a brand new constitution. But as you know, we are the people's parliament. You are our bosses. Whatever the people decide for us to do when we have our public hearings and all these engagements, when we move around because we are going to go to every zone, most local government areas or senatorial or geopolitical zones to engage (is what we will look at.

"If the people have a general consensus that this is what Nigerians want and the template of what they are asking for; what is wrong with this one that you want to change? How would the new one look like and what do you have in mind? We will be able to factor that in.

"I am happy that you are conscious of the move for the amendment of the constitution. I like it when people call to discuss that. It shows there is a very key awareness. It's only when you are aware that you can engage and make the right impact. So, I appreciate you. This is the time to lend your voice to this", he said.

Aguocha in a chat with ABN TV on Saturday described Kanu as a political prisoner, urging Tinubu to release him immediately.

The lawmaker accused Buhari of having a personal hatred and vendetta against the Igbos, urging Tinubu not to toe this path.

Despite several court orders for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, former President Buhari denied the IPOB leader bail.

He said while the court process is ongoing, he is hopeful that Nnamdi Kanu’s release will end up in a political resolution.

Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Sunday, explained why he believes the Biafra agitator can’t get a fair trial.

Ejimakor explained that Kanu can’t get a fair trial while he is detained by the Department of State Services, DSS.

He noted that a defendant can’t get a fair trial if there is no equality of arms between him and the prosecutor.

Aloy Ejimakor, Lead Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Sunday explained why he believes the Biafra agitator can’t get a fair trial.

Ejimakor explained with Kanu can’t get a fair trial while he is detained by the Department of State Services, DSS.

He noted that a defendant can’t get fair trial if there is no equality of arms between him and the prosecutor.

Posting on X, Ejimakor wrote: “A defendant can never have a #FairTrial if there is no EQUALITY OF ARMS between him & the prosecutor. The truth is that this equality of arms will never happen whilst #MNK is detained at the DSS.”

Kanu has been in the custody of the DSS since 2021, when he was arrested in Kenya and forcefully brought back to Nigeria to continue his trial.

He was first arrested in 2015, in Lagos, shortly after he entered Nigeria on a visit and was later arraigned in 2016, alongside four others on offences bordering on treason.

However, the trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, of the Abuja Federal High Court in 2017, admitted him to bail in the sum of N100 million and three sureties in like sum on health grounds to enable him to prepare adequately for his trial.

The bail was however revoked in 2019 and a warrant of arrest issued against him, for jumping bail in late 2019 and abandoning his trial.

The traditional ruler of the Azumini autonomous community in Ukwa East LGA, HRM Eze Edward Ebere Eule, has been removed by the Abia State Government, ABN TV reports.

A press statement signed by the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, said that Governor Alex Otti has approved the withdrawal of staff of office and certificate of recognition from Eze Eule.

The press release said that the withdrawal of the staff of office and certificate of recognition was because of the alleged refusal of Eze Ebere Eule to comply with the directives stipulated in a letter of suspension given to him on February 23, 2024, in line with the provisions of sections 12, 14 and 20 of the Abia State Traditional Rulers and Autonomous Communities Amended Number 2 Law 2018.

According to the statement by the commissioner, the removal of the traditional ruler was a result of allegations of misconduct brought against the former traditional ruler, for which the Abia State Government set up a panel of inquiry to investigate him.

The panel, the statement affirmed, indicted Eze Edward Ebere.

Sen. Kalu in a viral video sighted by ABN TV dismissed the alleged crisis between the party and El-Rufai, saying it is too early for the former governor to dismiss the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.

He therefore reaffirmed his belief in the capacity of Tinubu to make a significant difference in the governance of the country despite current economic challenges.

The immediate past Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu has informed members of Abia State PDP caucus that he has no plan to leave the party but will rather stay with others to rebuild it, ABN TV reports.

Speaking during a well-attended caucus meeting held at the new party secretariat at Onyerubi Crescent, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia, Dr Ikpeazu, who called for unity of purpose among members of the party in the state to ensure that the party quickly returns to winning ways, stated that the exit of some of his former aides to other political parties remains their personal choice.

“We must all take individual responsibility for our performance in the 2023 elections even as our party is going through self-cleansing at the moment. I will remain in PDP and will never be found wanting in my responsibilities to our party and its rebuilding process.

"Those who want to leave will leave no matter what you do but loyalty is also about the realization that at some point this party has been good to you. It is now time for sacrifice, especially from those who previously benefitted from our party in one way or another as we must all join hands to reposition it," he said.

Earlier in his address, the state PDP Chairman, Rt Hon Asiforo Okere thanked members who have remained steadfast in supporting the party, especially after the 2023 elections, and reminded members that the party still maintains a majority at the state House of Assembly even when the election was conducted same day with Governorship election that the party lost.

He announced that the National Working Committee of the party has extended the tenures of elected ward executives by 3 months in acting capacity and the constitution of 3 committees to handle Peace and Reconciliation, Way Forward and Finance.

Also speaking, the Senator representing Abia Central, Col. Austin Akobundu, stated that while people were free to leave and join a political party, the PDP in Abia State is a movement that nobody can kill.

On his part, elder statesman and member of the PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu called for unity and stated that the time for blame game is over as there were no factions in the party, and that leaders and members have learned from the 2023 experience and must be ready to bounce back. According to him, “It is now time to reposition the party and ensure that young members find comfort and space to contribute to the party and leadership in the state."

Super Eagles football star, Samuel Chukwueze has lost his grand mum, Catherine Onyegbule, ABN TV reports.

She died after a brief illness on March 17, 2024.

Chukwueze's mother, Mrs. Sarah announced this in an interaction with ABN TV.

She described her mother as a godly woman who lived a sacrificial life for the good and happiness of others.

Mrs. Sarah also denied rumours of her death, saying it was her mother who passed away.
