Less than two months after flagging off the reconstruction of the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Abiriba-Ohafia road, a major corridor linking the state capital with communities in the northern part of the state, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti on Wednesday signaled the commencement of construction of another strategic route linking three communities in Abia North. The 30km Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road is Governor Otti's solution to the long-held conundrum that there is no easy route to accessing Arochukwu from within Abia. For several years now, travellers to Arochukwu meander through communities within Akwa Ibom State before coming back to Abia, just to commute on a fairly good terrain, a release by chief press secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said. According to the statement, the Federal road that connects Akwa Ibom to Abia through Arochukwu to Ohafia, Bende and Umuahia, which would have solved the problem, has been awarded severally but never executed, while the road remains erosion-ridden and impassable. So also is the 67km stretch that connects Umuahia to Uzuakoli, Abiriba and Ohafia, now being reconstructed by Governor Otti's administration. Flagging off the construction of the Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road, Governor Otti promised that no part of Abia will be left behind in road infrastructural development as government is determined to open up every part of the state to boost the economy of the state. "Starting with some of the most strategic roads in Aba and Umuahia, we are now expanding the scope to cover roads that connect our agricultural zones to the urban areas in order to boost the State’s agricultural output and expand our economic corridors to create jobs for thousands of our young people while taming rural-urban migration. "It is on this note, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, that I happily welcome you to the official flag-off of the reconstruction of the 30-kilometre Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road. Coming just weeks after work began on the 67-kilometre Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Ohafia Road, the clear message is that no part of the State shall be left behind in our push to expand the frontiers of economic and social opportunities for individuals, families and businesses," Governor Otti affirmed. To achieve the quality of work expected, the Governor said the state government had continued to engage reputable engineering construction companies, who share its vision in road infrastructure delivery, adding that government was mindful of getting value for taxpayers money deployed in executing the projects. "From Port Harcourt Road in Aba through Ossah Road in Umuahia and across the over 30-road projects that are simultaneously going on in different parts of the State, we have painstakingly chosen civil engineering firms with excellent track records in project execution. Our most important consideration is to extract commensurate value for every kobo of taxpayers’ money spent. "The Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road will on completion in about 12 months, revive the agricultural and allied business ecosystem within several communities in Arochukwu and Ohafia LGAs and open an expanded economic window for those seeking to tap into the promises of the New Abia by investing here. "Fixing this road simultaneously with the Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Ohafia Road is a strategic initiative to guarantee that the stretch of road from this axis to Umuahia and Aba is in optimal shape, making the movement of people, agro and allied commodities from the northern part of the State to the urban centres hassle-free. "Beyond just boosting the economic endeavours of individuals and businesses, the reconstruction of these roads will also improve the social dynamics in the communities, making travel less risky and adding an extra layer of incentives for our kith and kin living in places far and near to visit home more frequently for social functions and engagements. "In committing so much to these road projects, we are looking to also strengthen inter-community bonds and create a new pathway for rapid development of the tourism sector. By the time the contractors complete their works, it would be easier for our friends and acquaintances to travel from wherever they are in the world to our communities to witness our cultural and traditional events as frequently as they wish," Governor Otti elaborated. The Abia State Government has announced a possible relocation of the motor parks along Milverton Avenue, Aba, to a more conducive area to allow for ease of movement. This is in response to a recent upsurge in fire outbreaks in the markets and some other business facilities. Governor Alex Otti declared the Milverton Avenue parks as a recipe for disaster, after inspecting the carcass of burnt vehicles, other items and parts of the building housing the bus terminal of Chisco Transport Company, which was gutted by fire Wednesday night, Kazie Uko, chief press secretary to the governor said in a statement. Speaking Thursday during an on the spot assessment of the fire incident, Governor Otti said the crowded nature of the Chisco park and all the other parks dotting the about one kilometre street, was a recipe for disaster. He stated that the government would look at other parks at Osisioma and Port Harcourt Road, with more space, with a view to relocating the parks at Milverton Avenue. "And I think it's time we relocated the parks to a more spacious place. We can't have everybody clustering in a place. This is a recipe for disaster, and I know that there are parks around Osisioma, part of Port Harcourt Road. We are going to go and have a look at them and ensure that we relocate a lot of these vehicles to the parks, so that it could be easy for us to move if there is any incident," he said. Governor Otti directed that henceforth, every business facility in the state should have fire extinguishers installed on their premises to contain fire outbreaks and disclosed that the enforcement of that policy would commence next week. The Governor announced that his administration had purposed to procure additional fire trucks to complement what is available in Aba. He described the fire incident at Chisco office as unfortunate and commended the men of the state fire service for mobilising and working hard to stop the fire. Governor Otti regretted that there have been several fire cases in Aba in the last few weeks, suggesting that there are things that are not being done right and pleaded with the people to be more careful in order to prevent future fire outbreaks. "I am happy that the Fire Service mobilised and worked very hard to stop the fire. If you noticed, in the last few weeks, there have been several fire incidents in Aba. That tells me that there are things we've been doing that we are not doing well. In the first instance, every facility must have fire extinguishers and we are going to enforce it from next week. "We will also try and get more fire trucks because I'm told that when the fire was going to overpower the service men, they had to seek back up from Umuahia and that's a distance," he said. He commiserated with the transport company over its loss and pledged government's support to "at least, take some of their loses." The Mayor of Aba South, Chief Uche Wogu, who, in company of the Mayor of Aba North, Chief John Udeagbala, joined Governor Otti on the visit, described the incident as most unfortunate and thanked God that no life was lost. He commended the Governor as well as men of the state fire service for rising to the occasion. "We thank God that no life was lost. We thank God that Abia is working. We thank God that we have a Governor that is very sensitive to the plight of the people. "The Fire Service is working. The day was saved by the Fire Service. It is unfortunate that in a small place like this, we have diesel dump which might have aggravated the fire incident. "There was a spark from the generator. It exploded, diesel must have aided it. When I got here yesterday, people were scooping diesel from the drainage which is unacceptable. You can't have diesel dump here. I also suspect that other transport companies might have the same thing. It is not acceptable," Mayor Wogu declared. Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has stressed the need for markets in the state to be properly designed and built to allow for ease of movement, especially in the event of fire outbreak or any other emergency. Governor Otti spoke Tuesday morning, when he paid an on the spot visit to a section of the Ehere Market, along Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba, occupied by timber dealers, which was gutted by fire Monday night, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kazie Uko said in a statement. Gov. Otti regretted that the way the market was built made it open to fire incidents and directed the Mayor of Obingwa Local Government Area, Dr. Eric Egwuibe, to immediately begin the process of rebuilding the market. "What we will do is to assess the level of damage. We will also through the Mayor begin the process of rebuilding this place. "I think the way the market is makes it susceptible to fire incidents. You know, where you have wood, you have sawdust; these are very expensive woods, and so we need to ensure there are fire extinguishers in all the shops around here. "We also want the shops to be properly built because the way it is, it is easy to conduct fire to other shops. Even the way the entire place looks, it is not very decent and very inviting. So I will like you to trade in a conducive environment," Governor Otti said. He added: "So I'm instructing the Mayor to assess the level of damage and begin the process of rebuilding, bring down all those ramshackle buildings and build proper shops for all of you." The Governor, who noted that on getting information about the disaster, he quickly alerted men of the Homeland Security and Fire Service to put out the fire, thanked God that no life was lost in the inferno, which consumed several shops. He assured that fire extinguishers will be procured and placed strategically in the market to enable traders to tackle such outbreaks in the future. Governor Otti said his vision is to ensure that traders operate in a conducive environment fit for trading and assured that the government will assess the level of damage to support them in replacing their lost goods. "The details of how it would be done would be worked out. One thing I can assure you is that if you do have a shop here, you will not lose your shop. We also know that this damage would have cost a lot of loss to the owners, by the time we do the assessment, we will see how we can support them," he added. However, on Wednesday luck ran out of the three suspects after they vandalized an equipment known as oil processing mill located in the plantation. They had stormed the premises with a van to cart away with their looted items. It was in the process of leaving that they were nabbed by soldiers on routine patrol. ABN TV gathered that the Abia State government had previously issued a letter, warning the vandals to stay off the property as plans were ongoing to rehabilitate it. Their arrest follows a tip-off by some hunters who reported to security agencies on the activities of the vandals. ABN TV gathered that the suspects have been handed over to Zone 9 Police Abia State and they are currently in detention while investigations are ongoing.
