The Senator representing Anambra Central, Chief Victor Umeh has called on the federal government to end the marginalization of Ndigbo, saying it is responsible for the separatist agitation in the South East region, ABN TV reports. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU8wDFTQ8EI The lawmaker said the prolonged detention of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is needless, stating that youths from other regions of the country who deserve to be in detention are walking the streets freely. In an interview in Abuja, Sen. Umeh noted that the federal government has failed to treat Igbo youths same way their counterpart from Niger Delta, Northern region and other parts of the country were treated. While stating that negotiations is the way out of the agitation in the South East, Sen. Umeh said when the Niger Delta militants were agitating for equal opportunity, negotiations were opened and some of them who were in the creeks with chains of bullet were placated, with some getting oil pipeline surveillance contract worth billions of naira. According to Sen. Umeh, the insurgency in the northern part of the country is gradually going down as a result of mechanism being put in place to negotiate with Boko Haram elements, wondering why the federal government has not extended same opportunity to Igbo youths, with regards to the agitation led by the detained Nnamdi Kanu. Sen. Umeh who was once arrested for allegedly sponsoring the activities of IPOB by the DSS and whisked to Abuja by road from Anambra said Nnamdi Kanu’s case in a pathetic one. He said the proscription of the IPOB was an error, wondering why the federal government used a proscription order to douse an agitation instead of addressing reasons for the grievances of the people. The lawmaker expressed hope that the Supreme Court will in December make a favourable pronouncement on the release of Nnamdi Kanu. "So long as Nigeria does not give equal opportunities to everybody, it will be like the issue of cutting down the bamboo tree and another one will spring up. "This thing has happened in Nigeria across various zones. The Niger Delta militants, there was a time they held Nigerian oil facilities hostage. The government had to go and discuss with them and put in place Amnesty Programme. "People like Mujaheed Asari-Dokubo was was always on the creeks with chains of bullet around him, there was negotiation and the Niger Delta militancy went down", he said. "It is the approach the government needs to use and call the IPOB people on a roundtable and remove the plaque in their eyes and see the truth, that what is good for the goose is good for the gander", he noted. The week-long Centenary celebration of the Eastern Nigeria Union Conference (ENUC) of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church has finally come to an end with an advice to the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and his predecessor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to put aside their political differences and work in the interest of the state. This was according to the General Conference President of the church, Ted Wilson who spoke at the Enyimba Stadium in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state on Saturday during a church service to mark the end of the celebration. Both leaders have had a frosty relationship with regards to the administration of Abia State. It was further heightened when the Labour Party’s Alex Otti was declared winner of the March 18 governorship election in Abia, after which he set up a committee to recover assets belonging to the state government alleged to have been unlawfully taken away by officials of the Ikpeazu-led immediate past government. The Adventist Church World Leader who reminded Otti and Ikpeazu that they were also brothers of the same faith noted that both of them could work to bring more progress to the state if they should put away their political differences and reconcile “The former and current governors of Abia State are both Adventists. And to the two of you, my dear brothers, you are brothers in Christ. The high court had ruled that Gov. Alex Otti was not duly nominated by his party, the Labour Party to stand for the March 18 governorship election in which he defeated the PDP's Ahiwe. Ahiwe had on October 30, 2023, filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, despite its dismissal by the Appeal Court. Igbo youths under the aegis of Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) have warned against the plot to remove the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu from office, saying democracy in the country has come under threat. The group in a statement titled, "The Plot To Remove Senator Orji Kalu Over Allegation Of Not Supporting the Emergence Of Senator Godswill Akpabio As Senate President Is Coup Against Democracy" was responding to an alarm raised by the sacked Senator of Adamawa North, Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo. Abbo who was removed from office on Monday had said he along with Sen. Kalu and other Senators were penciled down for removal from office for not supporting the emergence of Sen. Godswill Akpabio as President of the Senate. COSEYL in the statement signed by Comrade Goodluck Ibem the President General and Comrade Okey Nwaoru, the Publicity Secretary said the beauty of democracy lies in divergent views, wondering when it has become an offence for people to have an independent view. The group said, "It is very unfortunate that the supposed giant of Africa that should live by example in adhering to democratic norms, principles and practice is the same country that is spearheading the destruction of democracy in our country. "Different and diverse views on issues has always been the beauty of democracy all over the world. Witch-hunting individuals with opposing or different views is dictatorial and a coup against democracy. "We want to know when it has become a crime for one to air his or her views or opinion on issues? We want to know when has it become a crime for one to support candidates of his or her choice under a democracy? "Certainly what is happening today is not the democracy our founding fathers fought for. The democracy they fought for was a democracy where the fundamental human rights of citizens are respected and protected and not the other way round. "The urgency at which the Court of Appeal within 4 days delivered judgement removing Senator Abbo from office is a clear pointer to the fact that the justices are just playing a scripts handed over to them by some influential individuals somewhere. "The judiciary should not allow herself to be used as an accomplice to destroy our hard-earned democracy which our founding fathers fought so hard to bring to us. We urge them to remain impartial and always stand for Justice and truth. Our democracy depends on the judiciary to stand and there will be no democracy without an impartial judiciary. "We want to state it categorically that we monitored the last National Assembly and Presidential elections in the entire South East geopolitical zone and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu convincingly won his re-election based on his performance and popularity among his people in Abia North Senatorial zone of Abia State. "The unprecedented performance of Senator Orji in just less than 4 months in office is a clear testament that he truly loves his constituents and they also love him in return which was why they voted massively for him on 25 February, 2023. "Senator Orji has always been a source of Joy and inspiration to the good people of Abia North and the mandate freely given to him is sacrosanct to his constituents who defied the rain and harsh weather to cast their votes for him. "We want the whole world to know that any plot against Senator Orji Uzor Kalu is a plot against the collective interest of Ndigbo and we stand solidly behind the mandate freely given to him by our people. Senator Orji is and has always been the voice of the voiceless in our society. Abia State government has denied report that it has directed Northerners, who live and conduct their businesses at the Lokpanta Cattle Market, located along the Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway by Umunneochi, to leave the state. The state government described the report as false, saying there was no iota of truth in the "fake news" as those Northerners "are the second and third generations of Igbos" living in Lokpanta. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Commander Macdonald Ubah (rtd), made this clarification while briefing Journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on Monday, a statement by Kazie Uko the chief press secretary to the Governor said in a statement. Uko quoted Ubah as noting that the Lokpanta-Uturu axis of the state has been under siege by criminal elements in the last couple of years, prompting the major steps recently taken by the State Government to eliminate the spate of kidnappings and other criminal activities in the area. It added, "He said preliminary investigation points to the Lokpanta Cattle Market as a major hideout for all kinds of individuals involved in different criminal activities, including kidnappings, organ harvesting, armed robbery, and other violent crimes. "The retired Naval Commander said ransom for kidnap victims around the Uturu-Umunneochi axis were paid in the market, a situation which prompted the government to, among other measures, carry out deliberate actions including demolition of brothels and shanties in the market. "Ubah, who described Governor Alex Otti, OFR, as a detribalised Nigerian, having appointed non-Abians into his cabinet, noted that most of the cattle dealers in the state are second and third generations of Igbos, and therefore the Governor Otti-led government could not have given such directive. "He said that the stand of government is that the market would no longer be residential, but a daily market. He maintained that government's decision to make the Lokpanta Cattle Market a daily market is in the interest of the citizens and the cattle dealers, adding that government will not rescind the decision.
