The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos yesterday, stripped Ibinabo Fiberesima off her position as the president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN. Ibinabo is facing a 5 year prison term for accidentally killing Dr. Giwa Suraj in a car accident. In a statement issued by the National Secretary of AGN, Femi Durojaiye, the actress who is the current president will step down while Emeka Ike takes over as the new president. The statement released: “The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, this morning 23/3/2016 at the application and argument of Counsel to Actors Guild of Nigeria, Barr. Peter Andor Oboyi, struck out Ibinabo’s and BOT suit challenging the nullification of her election to the Presidency of AGN and also challenging the legitimacy of the Presidency of Emeka Ike and his Exco. The implication of this judgement is that Engr. Emeka Ike led Exco remain the only authentic and lawful leaders of Actors Guild of Nigeria," "The Honourable Court vehemently reiterated the position of the judicial authority that, Ibinabo, her purported exco members and the Board of Trustees vacate forthwith the office of AGN both at the National and State level and accordingly surrender all AGN assets at their unlawful possession to the incumbent Engr Emeka Ike’s Government.” http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/court-sacks-ibinabo-fiberesima-as-agn.html cc: lalasticlala |

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture says his view on a radio station in Abuja about President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of the Nigerian economy has been twisted and distorted. He is at a loss as to why his views were distorted and the motive of the twisters, according to a rebuttal issued today by his special adviser, Segun Adeyemi. “On Saturday morning, I appeared on a Radio show here in Abuja at which I spoke extensively on the issues affecting our country, especially the economy “To my surprise, my views were twisted and I was reported to have said that the economy of our country is beyond the control of the President. “This is a gross misrepresentation of what I said. I could not have said our economy is out of the control of our President or the administration he heads. As a matter of fact, this Administration has decided to turn the economic disaster that we inherited to a blessing by diversifying our economy. “I don’t know the reason behind the gross distortion of my comments on the radio today, but whatever the motive is, Nigerians should disregard such distortion and continue to support our President and his Administration to take our country out of the woods” http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/i-did-not-say-buhari-cant-control.html cc: lalasticlala |

Igwe was docked before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos today. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by the magistrate in the sum of N20, 000 with one surety in like sum. In a fresh interview with Al Jazeerah, President Buhari says he has not failed in his war against Boko Haram despite some recorded incidents of attacks by the sect members in some parts of Nigeria “I have not failed. When we came in Boko Haram was effectively in 14 local governments. Nigeria has 774 local governments. They hoist their flags and they said they had a certain caliphate but today they no longer to hold any local government. They have reverted to improvised explosive devices blowing soft targets, and that will be a kind of terrorism which will be difficult to eliminate because it is technological, but they cannot hold any local government again. They are using technology but they cannot carry out organised attacks, overrun police post, attack military installations, they cannot do that now.”he said http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/i-havent-failed-against-boko-haram.html |

Nigeria is fast winning the trophy for being the country with the “most dangerous roads to travel,” and this is not unrelated to the number of lives that are lost daily on the nation’s roads. According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), over 150,000 lives are lost annually all around the country as a result road-related incidents, and these range from – - Traffic accidents - Armed robbery - Open gullies - Police traffic checkpoints - Unmarked corners - Unlit roads - Abandoned broken-down vehicles Some of the most dangerous roads to travel in Nigeria are as following – i. Abuja-Lokoja-Okene-Kabba: If you have travelled from anywhere in the Southwest of Nigeria to Abuja through the Lokoja-Okene road in Kogi State, then you will understand that this is a road of death. Not only is this road bad, it is a haven of armed robbers. Thousands of passengers travelling the Lokoja-Okene road to Abuja or to Ondo State have been waylaid by armed bandits and dispossessed of their goods. The same can be said of the Ilorin-Kabba-Lokoja road and the Lokoja-Obajana-Kabba road among others along that same axis. ii. Lagos-Sagamu-Ore-Benin road: An analyst noted that “If there is any road in the country that has portrayed successive governments in the country in bad light as failed governments in the last two decades, it is the Lagos-Sagamu –Ore –Benin road.” This road is not only bad and terrible for motorists, it is also a den of robbers where unfortunate passengers have been robbed and raped if their vehicles break down along the road. Travelling through the road is like travelling through the valley of the shadow of death. iii. Lagos-Ibadan expressway: Constructed in 1974, the 120-kilometre highway is the only major road linking Lagos to Ibadan and other states within and beyond the Southwest of the Nigeria. The FRSC reported that in 2012 that 775 people died in 2,075 accidents along this road. The main dangers along this major expressway linking other states to Lagos is that of unmotorable road and frequent accidents, largely caused by oil tankers and overspeeding vehicles on the expressway filled with potholes. iv. Okigwe-Umuahia road: The ever-busy Enugu Port Harcourt expressway has always been a death trap for commuters. While road contractors hired to repair and maintain the road had abandoned it due to funds not being released by the government, the roads have fallen into terrible disrepair and become a death-trap for motorists and passengers alike. v. Otukpo-Otukpa road in Makurdi: It is true that Otukpo and Otukpa roads are both within Makurdi in Benue State, this is a major road where craters, gulley erosion, potholes, and even dare-devil robbers rule the road. From Otukpa to Otukpo, the ancestral home of Idoma kingdom; you’d be forced to dance along with your vehicle to no rhythm for close to four hours in the journey, which ought not to last for about one or 2 hours. A columnist wrote that “For regular travelers, the thought of venturing on Otukpa-Otukpo road is the beginning of a journey into uncertainties, eternity or the easiest way of booking appointment with fate and grave, nay a way of bring money for nearby coffin makers.” vi. Enugu-Awka-Onitsha road: The deplorable state of the highway linking Enugu, Awka, and Onitsha has forced hundreds of motorists to abandon the road and reroute via the old road from Udi to Awka. Several people have died in traffic accidents occurring on this road, and it continues to be a serious headache to passengers and motorists alike. vii. Kaduna-Abuja road: The Kaduna highway links many states in the north of the country to Abuja but boasts of over 400 potholes. In fact, the state of the road bears no image of a channel that links major states in the north to the Federal Capital Territory. An 18-seater Hummer bus was once involved in a ghastly motor accident that caused the loss of 14 lives along this road – they were all burnt to death beyond recognition. The vehicle had been coming from Kano State to Abuja. A British-born Nigerian was removed from an Easyjet flight at Luton airport after a fellow passenger read a message that mentions 'prayer' on his mobile phone and alerted cabin crew, who raised alarm with the police. Laolu Opebiyi was using WhatsApp to arrange a conference call prayer session with friends, as the Amsterdam-bound flight was waiting to take off at Luton airport on Thursday February 25 when a passenger next to him questioned him about message that included the word 'prayer' asking "What do you mean by prayer?" The 40-year-old Nigerian-born business analyst from London explained to the passenger that he was preparing to pray with friends. Few minutes later, he was pulled off the flight by two firearms officers. It is thought the man misread the name of Mr Opebiyi's prayer group “ISI men” – which stands for "iron sharpens iron” from a Bible quote – as Isis. Mr Opebiyi said: "That guy doesn’t know me and within two minutes he’s judging me. Even if I was a Muslim, it was pretty unfair the way I was treated. If we keep on giving into this kind of bigotry and irrational fear, I dare say that the terrorists will have achieved their aim." Mr Opebiyi was taken into questioning by police and quizzed about his Christian faith and where he attends church. He was forced to hand over his phone and password so officers could check his communication. He was eventually freed and allowed to catch another flight about three hours later. Seven other passengers reportedly got off the flight fearing a terror threat and also took the next plane, Guardian reports. A spokeswoman for Bedfordshire Police said: "Officers attended and a passenger was removed from the flight as part of the enquiries. Officers notified easyJet that they were satisfied that there was no concern around the passenger travelling." A spokeswoman for easyJet who apologised over the incident said: "Easyjet can confirm that following concerns raised by passengers, the captain of flight EZY2151 from Luton to Amsterdam requested the assistance of the authorities who took the decision to disembark and question the passenger. The safety and security of its passengers and crew is our highest priority which means that is a security concern is raised we will always investigate it as a precautionary measure. After questioning by the authorities, the passenger was cleared to complete his journey so easyJet arranged a later easyJet flight for him. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to the passenger" The officers cleared Mr Opebiyi for flight but the pilot refused to let him on and he was made to wait a further three hours to board the next flight to Amsterdam. He said that he is aftraind that he is on a terrorist watchlist. "I stand in uncertainty about my freedom of movement in the UK" he said. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/nigerian-man-removed-from-uk-flight.html
