For some reason, some of you are bent in ignoring the big, destructive elephant in the room while chasing after rodents! The Nigerian Federal government is the largest, single importer of petrol and other refined products of crude oil and these imports are denominated in USD! While it seems quaint or politically correct to castigate those who want luxury gadgets and items like phones, clothes, etc; the government has consistently and deliberately failed to plug this major hole!

The same government orders vehicles in 10s and 100s from Toyota, Mercedes etc for its officials using the same scarce dollars. All their wards and dependants study abroad with access to the scarce USD yet you only want to accuse Nigerians of having foreign tastes. Where is the effort of the government to support and patronise home grown car manufacturers for instance? What is the effort towards making our higher institutions viable, attractive and competitive enough for their own children? Let's not talk about health tourism by the same government officials! Buhari, Tinubu and co are wholly sponsored by government funds for their almost monthly health checks abroad!

Manufacturers still have to import some raw materials; with the inability of the government to maintain a healthy availability of forex at strong,competitive rates they are forced to the black market. What does that then translate to? Do the maths!

nooo, let's blame the masses. Buhari wears foreign made shoes, clothes and everything but we have locally made alternative. But it's election time, it's the people who wear okirika that killed our local currency. How many people who will stand in the sun to vote have ever bought a shoe worth $1,000 or worn wrist watches worth $5,000.

How easily can you earn $1 in USA that's what you should be concerned about. Minimum wage is 30k here and a liter of petrol is 200 plus subsidy. Which means that your minimum wage will buy you only 150 liters.

Meanwhile in USA, it's $1250 and a liter of petrol is $1 without subsidy. So if you get 1250 liters with the minimum wage in USA. That's how you should calculate it.

It's election time and this type of misinformation is expected.

You don't check how much something is sold abroad and convert it to Naira and when I compare Naira to Dollar rates, you ask me if I spend dollars

I'm building a 4 bedroom bungalow with a gateman house. Presently spent about 28m aside Land purchase and work never finish. The work left are Water tank, wiring, outside plumbing pipes, compound flooring and others.
Spanish tiles for parlos, passage and ante room, Nigeria tiles for all rooms, Spanish tiles for kitchen floor and all toilet walls, Nigeria tiles for kitchen walls. All room doors, toilets, kitchen and entrance doors are Turkish. There's a lot of money to spend on finishing based on the taste.
With the present cost of materials at the moment, I don't think the 12m budgeted amount can finish the building.

Buhari was forced into signing that law by our ignorant Senators. That's why he rushed to court immediately after signing it , while the mumu Senators that was forcing him didn't even read the content. When the public started explaining the content to them they rushed to amend it but Buhari refused to sign the amended one too. All I can is God confused the enemies of Nigeria!

This is frankly one very funny perspective to this whole affair. Much as there's a bit of simple logic attached to it, the bigger picture disagrees.

Let me paint you a quick scenario:
You are a politician vying for an electoral office in 2023 and you have 1 billion naira stashed away in Nigerian currency for the execution of your political ambition, then in comes the apex bank's plan to redesign and dispose of the same old notes you have, at a given date. Will you simply sit on your hands and watch your money go to waste?

No, is the simple answer.
How to fix this problem? Easy. Walk to the headquarters of your bank, sit with the manager as per the rich man that you are, offer the manager 5 million naira and he'll gladly sell you all the hard currencies in the bank's vault in exchange for your old notes. Of course that won't be enough to dispose of a billion naira. In comes the Bureau de change mallam! Those ones will gladly sell you hard currencies at their disposal.

Now not only have you succeded in disposing your expiring Nigerian currencies, you have mopped up the dollars and pounds that legitimate Nigerian businessmen will have accessed for importation to drive the daily economy.

Conclusion? You have just added to the scarcity of foreign currencies which in turn adds to the worsening rate of inflation.

Now, please tell me the wisdom in this particular Buhari/Emefiele brand of economics just when elections are around the corner?!

you can deposit billions today, you can not withdraw same amount in two weeks. The banks will not have enough cash to give you. There's a reason you the politician stashed away the funds in the first place.

You know how difficult it is for you to get those funds on impromptu. Remember that while funds are dispensed to politicians, ordinary people like me and you will also be needing cash.

Think about it like obtaining mint funds. The new notes will be more scarce. Don't expect CBN to reprint all the funds that are returned immediately. The CBN is also using this as a form of inflation control. There's insane amount of money outside the banking system, this will curb it

not enough time to withdraw. Banks will run out of cash if everyone withdraw their funds and before you opened account with banks, you signed that a certain amount of your funds will be retained
