Please stop �what long way, my brother if you don’t know seek knowledge many of these things are made right here in Nigeria. We argued some of these stuffs last year. Here we go again, just like tiles, pvc pipes, pop cement, W’c ceramic, Led lights switches, electrical distribution boxes, best of its all Nigeria electric cables still one of the best in the world till date. I can go on and on guys with many many more items designs and manufacture here. Stop being deceived with those Foreign labels

here's the difference between the aforementioned goods and doors, while educated and rich people with exposure handle the former, you see making of iron doors, it's still left for crude,semi literate and unexposed people.

Just the other day, someone came to my shop arguing it is better to use hand saw to cut pipes instead of angle grinder. I tried to tell him otherwise and he reminded me he started this job long before I knew it existed.


Having said that, there was at least ₦500 price increase in price of materials I work with yesterday. Like every individual iron increased by at least ₦500. Some were as high as ₦700. I don't know where we go from here and what happens to quotes already submitted

However, this change has mostly to do only with the services demanded by customers and the way to deliver the service. Product quality, identity, and functionality stay the same.

For example, 1982 Benz is the 'same' as 2021 Benz. What "changed" are the features (services) demanded by 2021 customers - padded, internet connection, sat-nav, electric engine, sleek design, eco friendly, etc. But a person born in 1982 who went into a coma and came to in 2021 will still recognize a Benz even from a distance.

Another example, Savings Account in 1982 with passbook is the same in 2021. What "changed" are computers, the internet, and app. But savings account na savings account. This is recognized as PRODUCT IDENTITY. Some call it an instrument. What have all these got to do with you and your aggrieved client? Plenty.

You need to have PRODUCT IDENTITY. You cannot supply a 3.5ft (for example) door to Mr A and call it a 3ft door and supply a 2.5ft door to Mrs B and call it a 3ft door. No identity. A 3ft door is a 3ft door. A 4ft door is a 4ft door. Period. It is not your responsibility or prerogative if it would fit. That's the customer's prerogative. You are essentially a manufacturer who manufactures to measure. If the customer says please give me 3ft door; you price your product appropriately and give them 3ft door. Shikena.

I bought a house in South East London that needs modernization. I need to install a footpath wrought iron (garden) gate. So I went online. See the attached photo. This will give you an idea of how these things are done. Look carefully at the photo, you will see the size (Dimensions) and even weight. This is called PRODUCT SPECIFICATION. Look carefully again, you will see where the suppliers said "Fits a post to post GAP of 762mm . So upfront, I know what I'm ordering. Now if the gate is delivered and the specification doesn't match my invoice, I will return the product for a refund at the cost of the supplier. It is not what I ordered they delivered. Any explanation that I need to knock down walls or choke any gap to make the product fit is not acceptable. This is the issue you are currently having.

I'm not expecting you to start drafting (drawing) products. This will be costly and if you pass on this cost to your customers, they will complain. But I'm expecting you to include the dimensions in your invoice and deliver exactly the dimensions so contained. And leave the rest for the customer.

So going forward, write down the PRODUCT SPECIFICATION in your invoice issued to customers and as customer service, you may add "this product will fit an opening of bla, bla, bla". Then deliver exactly the dimensions in the invoice. You will be good.

We are saying the same thing. Even if it is 2500mm x 2500mm, the exact measurements of the build should be defined.
"This is how it is done" is not an excuse. Unit of measurement is not an assumption.
Everyone building a house does not know "how it is done". They go with the S.I units of measurement which is a globally acceptable standard. But then, we learn as we go. If the quotation is for 4ft frame, just build and deliver 4ft frame. No ifs and buts. If there is any reason(s) why it will be less or more than the size, let the owner know before...and not after the build.

Michlins shouldn't take these things as personal attacks. It will rather help him get better at his quotations and estimates. Even the best corporations in the world have a litany of complaints against them.

I can see that from the client's post of the door sent as mounted on the provided space the mortar chalking space is about 2-3" on the left side and on the right it's lapping on the wall.
Please can you help read the dimension on the tape as shown on the pix as to where the door ends on it............

that should be 33" and 3ft is 36". That leaves a difference of 3" which is 1.5" on each side.

It's now obvious that there's an even distribution of stupid people.

Some years ago I did a renovation for my family house. When I removed the wooden toilet/bathroom doors and took measurement of door opening it came out full 1000mm.
I had previously asked the price for a toilet door without giving out any dimension/measurement. When I later sent the exact measurement to the GMP guy there was an increase in price and I had to pay. I only to do exactly what I gave him or give an allowance of 1" clearance on both sides of the door.

the same clearance is the matter here. It's 1.5" on both sides.

After watching the video, I think it’s safe to conclude that the Contractor didn’t do right.

The size of the door with frame is 2ft 9inches (33 inches) and not 3ft (36 inches) which was exactly what the client ordered.

For me there’s no justification for this error and I agree that the vendor should make full refund for this.

There are those who see you geninuely and there are others who don't. Because there are challenges in built environments, the most important obligation of a contractor is to satisfy the needs of the client. There are times it comes to near satisfaction but in this nearness it should be something that will not disrupt the client's sleep.

Just take all that's happening to be a learning process and try to know how you deal with every client ensuring you give them what will appeal to them delighting in every detail.

I am not holding brief for you and neither for the client. Reason is that judging by the pix posted by the client your fabrication with is in order except the client wants the frames hidden in block/mortar.

Another reason is that when a door is said to be of custom made and design it meets the exact size with little or no need for adjustments.

The above is one of the reasons I do a door opening of 1000mm instead of 900mm.

Even in the noise and distractions, here's what I promise my clients. If I tell you that this thing is white, that's what it is. Another thing is to do my best to satisfy the client.

What I can't do however is sell my self respect and dignity to appease someone. My goal is to deliver quality service while making honest living

I'm still trying to understand how a 3ft door will fit exactly in a 3 feet space. I think either the space is broken above 3 feet or the size of the door is reduced 'slightly'.

I won't be expecting an exact 3ft door that will make me break walls just to accommodate a door. Also, I don't think 1.5" reduction is an obstruction to passage of furnitures. I had to read over and over again to be sure I saw the 1.5" clearly and other reasons for the complain. May God save us all.

sir you won't understand. It wasn't that long that an engineer gave a client a measurement and I did same. Did the job to site and it couldn't fit. The engineer said I should have known better to reduce the sizes. In his words, "I should know better"

When you are fabricating a steel or wooden door from scratch then it can and should be made to order. Simples.

I don't about wooden doors but right now with the sizes of iron reducing daily with 12mm looking like 10mm, 3" pipes now 2.8", you can't make exactly 3ft doors without joining. Ask any welder around you. Rails, windows, standing tank and others are the jobs you can determine the sizes. Even H beans that used to be 40ft are now 37ft 10". You take it to site and you're scrutinized as if you are the one who cut off the rest. 18ft pipes are barely 17ft 6" now. I don't make these things, I just buy them just like everyone else

Here's another reason doors are getting smaller in size, the whole pan aren't even in size, so we trim off areas thereby reducing the already small size.

Without doing it, the job will be uneven and welding becomes a problem

Measure that pan, it's 2ft which is the size of pan. Everything about the job I did according to our agreement. Say I cut off 3", what will it amount to? Am I going to make another door with 3". Say that the size of materials are reducing from the producers whilst price keeps increasing.

I have been very detailed to you and asked you to get another anonymous welder to verify my claims. Go to your local market and measure the pans, they're 23.5". The manufacturers are creating all these issues while we the artisans answer the questions. To increase the size beyond what it currently is, I will add pipes in-between the doors and you won't like it. That's not alone, if I measure a job and it's 3ft,if I bring exactly same size to the place,it will never enter freely. You must break wall.

2-3" will never stop your household appliances. This is why I advise people to make all entry and exit points 4ft doors to avoid the issue of moving properties

If in doubt ask the customer, you do not assume for the person.

please sir, that's how doors are made. Even the prefabricated doors are smaller.

Here's how it goes. A sheet of pan is 8ft and when divided by four gives you 2ft plus 3" of the pipes. That's 30" then you add frames which is usually 1.5" on both sides. That's a total of 33".

This is the way it works. If you want to expand the size, you will have to add pipes in-between to increase it.

It has been discussed extensively here. She's quick to bring screenshots here. Do you know what she has said to me over the phone and how she has insulted me. Even a slave deserve a better treatment
