Meaning taking one for the team at that particular part of the pitch would result in a red card and a penalty

Fantastic decision that made Rantie dribble him and he went to ground like a child playing in the sand (no disrespect meant)
was it inside the box or not?

Again you omitted Adi.

You still haven't mentioned that goalie o.
I am judging based on what I see. Heard Adi was in camp once and due to some issues with some NFF topwigs he was dropped, his career is probably going to go down the drain so I left him out. And even he is inexperienced about the African game, what we are looking for is experience AKA tested and tusted players who can still perform and teach the younger lads.

I said ANY goalkeeper we have is better than Akpeyi. Guy wait, is it that you didn't see the first bar that they hit? A simple cross and catch that GKs do all day in training and the imposter of a gk failed, how is that in anyway a good GK?

He tried what he could do and forced the player wide. I cannot blame Akpeyi a single bit. The fault still falls on the CBs, and not even Onazi, for being in a no man's land when they were on that offensive that led to that counter.

Please help us by naming that NPFL goalie or goalies that you feel is/are good enough to deputise for Ikeme.
CB kwa? You make me laugh. We were playing a freekick for Christ's sake and they are two of the tallest players we had, in every single team the DMF falls back. Even in Barca were Busquets is taller than Umtiti, Busquets still falls back, that's the DMF's work

Go back and watch the 2-2 we played against SA in Uyo in 2014. Watch how our idolized Enyeama handled the situation when he was one on one with Rantie for their second goal.

Please everyone should re-watch that video on YouTube.
you do understand that the goal was scored in the first half right? Of course that gives us ample time to respond, and if Enyeam pulled him down it would have been a penalty and another sure goal, fantastic decision making by Enyeama

The highlights of the NFF technical committee were as follows;
1.Coach Rohr match day squad will be vetted by the technical committee. He must give reasons why each player was selected.
2.Only after the technical comtee are satisfied with the match day squad before the match day squad team list will be made public.
3.Coach Rohr will make the match day squad team list public before journalist in a press conference.
4.Coach Rohr will answer questions raised by journalists in the press conference. He will defend why he selected his players.
5.A thorough search for better goalkeeper for all our national team has began. They are not satisfied with the choice of some gk when the need arises.
so we will now be making our first 11 public like SA? Poor poor decision by the technical committee

please we shld look ahead and let retired players rest they have done their best.
i agree that if someone retires we should leave them, but these two guys are still willing and capable. Even Osaze is still looking for a call-up. Let me repeat what I said, Osaze would have offered more than Moses Simon on saturday, and Martins would have offered more than Iheanacho, should we shouldn't invite them because they are 32? Does that make sense? The world up is next year not next 3 years, they will still be 33 next year

So if Akpeyi took the red card and Ikeme ruled out as usual. We approach Enyeama and he snubs Rohr and the NFF, who will be ur pick to mount goal?

Yes I understand that view perfectly.

But Osaze is already far spent. The experienced players we missed in that SA game were Balogun, Mikel and V. Moses. When they are back in our next game I believe our attack and defense will be fine again. I don't even think we need Ighalo and Ideye.

Rohr just needs to sort out that MF.

I personally believe Ndidi(DM) and Etebo(CM) would be a better pairing.

I still have believe in this team.
ok so if these three guys aren't availabe yet again? We will endure this rubbish again?! For someone who appreciates experience you are too quick to dismiss these players. Osaze to be quite frank would have offered more than Moses Simon, #Fact. Martins would have offered more than Iheanacho #Fact, so these people still have something to offer. Quite frankly I'd want Martins, Osaze and Hope Akpan back

A game you were already losing. If he collected the red we still would have lost.

If we were leading and needed to protect our 3points may be the red card could have been a worthy price.

Plus also Daniel Akpeyi is our most reliable goalie. Take that to the bank.
He is always available for action. If he received a red card, and knowing Ikeme's fitness level, you know we are in bigger trouble for our next game.

Akpeyi did his best to prevent that 2nd goal.
France just defeated England after receiving a red card, Akpeyi should have done the best thing there is to do, take one for the team! And he would have saved us the toture of having to see him in our next game

I think blaming Iheanacho borders on scandalous. We did not have a single shot on target, the coach takes all the blame in my book. Honestly Rohr made a poor call by removing Kelechi. He had been playing the boy for 90 minutes all this while and the first time there was pressure he removed him. Also that change had no effect because it was effectively the same setup we had on the field.
Nobody is blaming him for the loss, however we are pointing out that he was very very poor

What else did he do when the balls couldn't locate him? Nothing!

An above average forward will hustle his way through. Kelechi knew he didn't do enough, that's why he was livid with himself. But somehow you will find a way to defend him.

This reminds of the argument we had after Manchester City vs Leicester City. A game you were full of adulation for Kelechi, not until I posted his stats which recorded he only touched the ball 11 times before he was pulled off. I believe mickeal2 will remember this incident because I recall he was shocked how much you were praising a below average performance by Kelechi before I pulled that stat.

I'm not saying it is bad to love a player, but you should find a way to give a balanced assessment of the guy.
yeah I remember the argument. he was now sounding like Robert Huth was a defensive beast instead of just accepting that Iheanacho was poor, the exact same scenario is playing out now, me I am tired, everybody else saw what we both noticed during the match so I tire

Yes because most teams in Europe, especially the EPL are very compact. The marking of Nacho was so poor that he drifted into attack almost effortlessly and repeatedly. In the EPL, Nacho will not see such space. With players like Silva, De Bruyne and Gundogan, they will lace easy passes.

Due to the compactness, the attacker has to drop deep to help increase the number in the attack midfield and make build up play easier.
so you read what you just typed and it made sense to you? I agree, Iheanacho was perfect on Saturday, a performance worthy of the Balon D'Or

TheGoodJoe:
Please stop this. The striker drops deep to help build up play. In this case, build up was not a problem. Is that too hard to understand? If build up is right, then the player must be in position for the pass.

In what you are quoting, did you not see help in build up? If the build up is okay, does it need help to you?

Haaaaa.

Go and watch the game and see Iheanacho's runs when the overhit passes happened.
so your point is that our build up play was better than Man City's own hence it didn't need Nacho's help?

Another nice info that has bothered me since the appointment of Coach Rohr. His back room staffs from Nigeria. Most especially Alloy Agu and Salisu Yusuf. Rohr needs a tactician to work with him. Mourinho had Villas-Boas, Benitez had Pako Ayesteran, Rijkaard had Henk Ten Cate, Ancelotti had Paul Clemens etc.

My pick is Emmanuel Amunike because of his modern methods fits the pattern I feel Rohr intends for the team. With ball playing/passing defensive set up (including the defensive midfielder). Amunike actually played under such system and always coaches his team to play that way.

Although Siasia plays a similar brand of football, I am more comfortable with Amunike.

Rohr needed a simple advice. Iheanacho is making the runs when the pass is hit and always ahead of the defenders. We need someone in the hole to give him more accurate passes and we will tear the South Africans apart.

If we are maintaining the same formation, either Etebo or Onazi leaves (preferably Onazi),Etebo takes a deeper role and Iwobi takes the attack midfield position. Musa comes in for Onazi. We would have been stronger with the set up.

I thought Amuneke has a club? It would be difficult to get him right now. Salisu Yusuf is just not it, all he does is parade himself as the assistant manager but he has done nothing positive there.

I think we still had the right personnel to set up a 3-4-3 formation but the fear of Onazi and Echiejile shielding the left side would have led to another catastrophe. Maybe Onazi for Agu would have helped.

TheGoodJoe:
At least you are getting to see my Point but missed to highlight where the problem came. Let us start with what you said about Kayode being in good position but not getting a good pass. That was what I said immediately Rohr did the changes.

The problem was not in the striker. You admit this after a third time watch. That is why I kept saying watch the game again because most missed the problem.

Now to Iheanacho. You say he was standing in the exact spot. I have said that repeatedly. Watch when the ball is hit. He was not offside, moved for the ball but the ball was over hit. It was there for the taking. He was shoulder to shoulder with the defenders. Every time the ball was over hit barring the later one where he moved early to try to meet the over hit ball. The young man knew at that point he was not going to get a good pass with the midfield. Notice in that offside run, Iheanacho got the ball. With better timed passes, he would have gotten repeated clean chances to tear the South Africans apart.

Next time watch the failed final balls. That is the key. In those balls, with the runs Iheanacho made. You will see clearly the chances we had to wrap that game up in the first half and why the young man got frustrated.
See the problem I had with him was that I didn't really see his pace in that game. I was watching the match with my junior bro and even he was like of course everyone knows Iheanacho isn't pacy which made it difficult to operate against a high backline. I do not need to be a soothsayer to know that what the match needed was someone like Kayode to push the CBs backwards so that Iheanacho can do his thing without worrying about going offside. Iheanacho is a 9 no doubt, but this game wasn't built for him to play as A LONE FORWARD, he would have had a lot more joy if he played off a striker who would push the defenders back. I till now can't understand why Rohr subbed him but the way he left the pitch should be looked into, that was a poor poor show of sportmanship
SportsRe: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2027, 2028 And 2030 World Cup by Mickael2(m): 12:32am On Jun 13, 2017
After watching this match for the 3rd time just now there are a few things I noticed.

1) Whoever says that Ekong was average in this game needs to tell me the match he watched. None of the chances created came through his side of the defence, he literally shut down that side of the defence, nothing and nobody moved there, in fact he was awesome. When you watch that game again without tension or anger you will understand. Awaziem however needs to go back to training school, his clearances from the very first whistle were funny, he was swiping at the ball wildly, and he is no ball-playing CB. He was always afraid to carry the ball more than 20m beyond our box which shows lack of confidence and ball playing abilities.

2) watching Onazi was like a comic release. He was literally everywhere except where he should be. Most times it was as if he was playing as the LB, not that Echejile was out of position, I don't know if I should say that he just wants the glory or he has too much energy to burn. And then when Echejile will go forward thinking that Onazi has him covered, Onazi too will go forward thinking that a supernatural being has him covered as well.

3) Our fullbacks were poor. Where was that Echejile that scored a goal at the 2013 Afcon? The poor showing was exemplified by a particular passage of play in the first half, Iwobi had the ball on the edge of the box with only one defender ahead of him, he held the ball for 5 seconds thinking that Echejile was bombing forward to support him(like any good LB would) and by the time he realized that we had an imposter on the left side another SA player had already returned and a potentially dangerous situation was laid to waste. Shehu I cannot complain about, his side was balanced together with Ekong, brilliant player that boy but he needs to brushen up his ball playing abilities, needs to learn how to take on his man.

4) Simon is just what he is. He skinned both the LB and RB repeatedly and only if he could cross to save his life we would have scored a lot of goals. He was switching wings to devastating effects but the final ball was lacking. And the final ball has always been lacking in his game, he was our best forward/midfield player on the day. Iwobi however was literally kneeling down and begging for a passing partner with Echejile being totally non-existent. Iwobi wasn't poor, the system was poor, with a good LB Iwobi would perform well which is why I don't understand why someone would say that he isn't a wide midfielder, truth is if we are playing a 4-5-1 then nobody suits that position more than Iwobi, except we want to change to a 4-3-3.

5) Etebo needs to be dragged backwards. Killer passes just isn't his game, he should stamp down on that CMF position where all he needs to do is spray short passes and burst forward every once in a while, his decision making needs some work as well. Ndidi wasn't briliant and his strikes lacked their usual accuracy.

6) Who said Iheanacho was making runs? Iheanacho was standing in the exact same spot all match long. He was standing beside the LCB all match long, he didn't take up any other position and even when he dropped deep a couple of times to touch the ball, he lost it in both instances and even when Simon produced a nice cross to the back post that was begging to be nodded in, Iheanacho was not well positioned, that ball is what all strikers thrive on, that doesn't mean he isn't a good striker though just poor poor display from him, and that show of petulence should not go unpunished. Then watch what happened when Kayode came in, he actually took up two great goalscoring oppurtunities, one Etebo failed to pass but decided to shoot when Kayode was open, the next one he did receive the pass although he didn't hit the target but he gave the midfielders a passing option and they actually found him which shows that the midfielders actually know how to pass just that the striker wasn't giving them that opening. Promising display from him, if he had started that match he would have gassed out the two cbs and Iheanacho could pick the pieces but that's gone.

7) Let us now be plainly honest. Rohr is NOT A BRILLIANT COACH, he is a great man manager but far from a brilliant coach, no plan B nothing. I mean your plan B is a 3-4-3 formation but somehow the main player in your 3-4-3, you decide to leave out of the match day squad, makes no sense. No tactical tweaks during the game. IMHO, no team can outplay Sia1's team like that. I know he may invite his boys but they always deliver. If not for Moses we would have defeated Egypt, if not for Sadiq Umar we would have defeated Germany etc. The guy is a good coach but somehow we managed to tie down Rohr, but not that Rohr is bad but if we can get Sia1 as his assistant(not this Salisu guy), the combination would be perfect.

Oh and please BringBackOurEnyeama. Is Akpeyi a pro player?

Seriously! Did dis man watch the match? shocked

1, There was no time Iwobi moved to the wing to rescue the game. He was designated to play on the wings from onset. Likewise Iheanacho was designated to play the no9 role.

2, Etebor was designated to play as the ATM role from the onset but he failed woefully. Now, ya eyes don clear he is jack of all trades made possible by the Nigerian coaches. grin He is neither good as a CM. Play him as a left winger then you will see the American wonder in him. Take it to the bank.

3, Simon Moses was the only player opening the space but his crosses are for big strikers with ability on the air and he was the one that tested the keeper who made a fine save. As you can see, Iheanacho is not a complete striker. In short he is not a striker. Period. All analyst rated Moses highly but na for here I dey read different thing.

4, Iheanacho is not a starter for the no 9 shirt in the National team. He brings nothing to the table since he was moved to that position. If there is no space for him as a second striker then he must sit on the bench. Period. We can't continue with this try and error wey dey kill people.

5, Oga, Iwobi was not on the field when Kayode came in for Iheanacho. I no know where you saw Kayode played with Iwobi. When Kayode came in for Iheanacho, it was Ahmed Musa and Moses Simon on the flank and we saw we almost scored goals which was practically missing when Iheanacho was on the field. Ndidi and Etebor wasted those chances with their selfish play. Go and watch the match again with open mind and stop being confused.

Thank you.
oga is it that you cannot comprehend simple English?

He said Musa and Kayode linked up well, he said the SA defence confined Iwobi to the wide areas alone. Guy you are getting outta control I swear

This is a nice rendition of what transpired between the eagles and South Africa.

In addition to what you said, I think Rohr got it wrong trying to play all the big players at the once. This really unbalanced the midfield.

Breaking up the partnership of Onazi/Etebor like witnessed against Algeria at the Base of the midfield wasn't a smart move.
The team would have been in better shape if Onazi/ Etebo continued at the Base while Ndidi pairs Ekong at CB, Iwobi drops to the advanced midfield role while Kayode replaced Iwobi on the wings.

I don't know why, but I see Ndidi having the same trajectory as Kompany who started off as a DM.
Ndidi at CB would have definitely been a better choice than Awaziem. Until last year, Ndidi was a centre back and I've read Shakespeare tell the media he will try Ndidi in defence at some point.

Finally, I can't figure out why our full backs didnt get down the wings and added width to the attack. I belive their inability to get up and down the wings contrived to make our attacks predictable and easy to intercept by the SA defence. This greatly affected the delivery of Moses because there was always a spare man on him when got away from his marker.
Onazi/Etebo IMHO worked because of Mikel's presence, without Mikel, Onazi/Etebo would be worse than what we saw on saturday. I may be tempted to agree that Ndidi could have been used as a CB(although I don't see why Omeruo shouldn't be there) but in that case Agu or Ogu or some other person plus Etebo would work.

Then we have the secondary problem of figuring out what formation we are actually playing. Icon4s thinks we are playing a 4-3-3, the coach thinks we are playing a 4-2-3-1(4-5-1) and some of the players are understandably lost. For example when you are playing a 4-3-3, Iwobi needs to stay very close to the opponents box as a forward not close to the center circle as a midfielder and at times you could notice that Iwobi was lost, Simon on his own part did not know if he was playing as a WF or a naturally wide midfielder, I think the coach needs to address this issue. If we want to play a 4-3-3 then let it be a 4-3-3 and in that case Iwobi is NOT A WING FORWARD by any stretch of the imagination and should not be there. If we want to play a 4-5-1 then Moses Simon is NOT A WIDE MIDFIELDER by any stretch of the imagination and should not be there

5 Reasons Why Super Eagles Got Humiliated By Bafana Bafana

The Super Eagles lost for the first time in a competitive game to South Africa on Saturday in front of the Nigerian team's home fans in Uyo.

Completesportsnigeria.com's JOHNNY EDWARD, who was in Uyo to witness the hugely embarrassing Africa Cup of Nations qualifier defeat, outlines the major reasons for the poor result…

1. Iheanacho can't play as a false nine for Super Eagles
Kelechi Iheanacho has been the most prolific forward for the Super Eagles since he made his debut in 2016, scoring six goals in nine matches. But he has failed to click playing as a false nine. The Manchester City forward has thrived playing alongside a natural striker who could run into spaces for him to operate. Iheanacho sparkled in training for the Super Eagles because the Eagles had no recognised striker with pedigree playing with the senior national team. Since Rohr was taking a big risk of his young side he could have well taken the gamble on Kayode Olanrewaju or Victor Osimhen whom he listed on the substitutes bench for the Eagles.

2. The defence of the Super Eagles not organised enough
Chidozie Awaziem made his competitive debut for the Super Eagles and was average against South Africa. The Porto B defender did not form a good understanding with William Troost-Ekong who he partnered in the heart of the Eagles defence. Awaziem was caught off guard several times when the South African launched counter-attacks. He also did not also fill in for the left-back Elderson Echiejile when Echiejile joined the attack. Echiejile also was far from his best during the game. As the most senior player in the team, Echiejile failed to marshal his defence. The young Eagles defence were culpable for the first goal while they lacked the pace to catch up with South African full-back who got behind the Eagles defence at will.

3. Eagles lacked creativity in midfield
Despite the array of attacking talent Gernot Rohr had at his disposal, the Super Eagles lacked creativity from the midfield. The likes of Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho were off colour during the encounter and John Ogu who was left out of the squad for the game could have offered the Eagles some sort of attacking threat going forward when the Oghenekaro Etebo and Wilfred Ndidi fizzled out in the second half. There was no creative move orchestrated from the midfield and coach Gernot Rohr paid dearly for his overreliance on Iwobi, Iheanacho and Moses Simon in attack.

4. Gernot Rohr got his tactics wrong
Keeping a versatile player like John Ogu out of the the squad cost the Super Eagles quality substitution options during the game. The midfield trio of Ogenyi Onazi, Oghenekaro Etebo and Wilfred Ndidi fielded by coach

5. Lack of experience in the team
It was obvious that the Super Eagles lacked experience to maintain the pressure to break the resolute South African side who were determined to get something from the game. The big players like Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo and Victor Moses that missed out could have offered valuable options in midfield and in attack. There was no game calmer in the starting line-up neither was there any game changer.

half baked journalism. Iheanacho did not play as a false nine on saturday sef. If he had been instructed to play as a false nine he would have been dropping deep and he would have helped out the midfield a lot. Oga where do you even get all these rubbish assesments from?

goldfish80:
The organisation and positioning of the South African defence made it difficult for any through ball to find him.
Even when the balls came to him, he couldn't bring the midfielders into the game like a proper lone target man will do.

I've read reviews and ratings by various sources on this game, not even one gave Kelechi a pass mark. Why you're making excuses him beggars belief. Even if you're his agent, this blatant deceit is unacceptable.
I can't believe you are still arguing this with theGoodJoe of all people, I am tempted to ask if you are a newbie.

#Fact: Iheanacho's first touch has been poor since the match against Algeria, I think the boy seriously needs to start learning how to control the ball with a second touch in tight positions, I wonder what he is learning from Pep's drill if his first touch is getting worse by the day. Saturday wasn't an exception, he was making runs on the wrong side of the midfielders, you have 2 right footed midfielders apporaching from the DMF position, your runs should be in such a way that it would favour their right foot but he will be standing behind the last defender on the left side waiting for a miracle, and even when the miracle came he couldn't outpace a 35 year old GK like you said but the other day I said Kayode is faster than Nacho and some of them wanted to kill me.

TheGoodJoe always says that he wants Nacho to play more like Suarez, so do you think that Suarez would have stayed up top all match long looking for a lucky pass? When such conditions happen in Barcelona you see Suarez dropping deep, and he and whoever is there will start playing 1-2s from outside the box to unlock the defence and if Nacho did something similar, trust me Iwobi feeds on those kinds of play and he would have brought Iwobi into the game which makes me believe that even if Iwobi moved into the middle nothing would have changed because Nacho wasn't just great. There is a reason why Pedro and Willian score a lot for Chelsea because their lone forward brings others into play

forgiveness:
Dem don come again with unnecessary excuses. grin

So you mean only england voted? shocked

Abeg make I hear better word. grin

Not as if you can kick ball into empty net but you come here come dey tell us story. grin

Bros, the goals looks easy but I bet you don't know what is involved.

Tell me the the striker in the National team yesterday that has all that you mentioned. grin

If Solanke wants to sit on the bench, why did he refuse to sign contract with Chelsea? Think bros. grin
some things you are saying today are just...OMG. And what's with all the insults? You are making yourself look childish. Imagine saying stupid things like Chelsea bench is better than Man City bench, is it Costa that is better than Aguero? Or Bathsuayi is better than Gabby J(God forbid) but somehow Solanke is sitting on the floor not even bench but in your mind that is better than Nacho.

Do you think this is U20? Or you think that Venezuela team had something to offer? This U20 was totally devoid of talent, that Penaranda guy was showboating all game long, will you see that in a serious tournament? Compare this tournament to that of 2005 and you will see that the U20 is pure crap now but whatever keeps you warm at night Sir

somehow:
Please give me 2 activities iheanacho contributed to yesterday.

Secondly, you know little about the SE if you don't know the role and contributions of Ideye as a support striker. I employ you go watch out clips from when we won the nations cup against Burkina down to the last competitive game we played before yesterday.
I am guessing you don't know the difference between a double-9 system and a SS system. Ideye is not a SS, he is a 9, has always been and will always be.

Meanwhile watch Athletico Madrid vs Barcelona 2014, Messi was totally annonymous and even I wanted him to be subbed out but he did score a goal(that was wrongly ruled out), that's what football is all about, when you are looking for a goal you don't sub out any striker because you don't know who may score
