The Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF) on Sunday called on Ndigbo to boycott the general elections scheduled for March 28 and April 11, 2015. BZF said its call became necessary in lieu of the refusal of a Federal High Court sitting in Enugu to grant bail to 11 pro-Biafra activists, who are standing trial for treason. Speaking with journalists in Enugu, the National Chairman of BZF, Comrade Cyril Onyia said any harm done to the detained BZF members was harm on Ndigbo in general. He, therefore, called on the entire people of South-East not to participate in the election as a show of solidarity to the detained activists. “They have been in prison custody not because they are pursuing a selfish course but for the singular reason that they are demanding the liberation of Ndigbo. “To this end, we urge all worthy Igbo sons and daughters not to participate in the forth-coming elections. This is the only honour they should do to these great patriots” Onyia said. Faulting the reasons given by the court to deny the BZF detainees bail, Onyia noted: “it is indeed very surprising that the court refused them bail on the grounds that they may cause security breach within this period because the BZF does not believe in violence, neither does it associate with any violent group. “We can never disrupt any election, even though we shall abstain from voting”. “So, we are calling on the Federal Government to urgently intervene and see that these harmless freedom fighters are released. “In our fight for freedom, we have never and will never take up arms against the State. Everything we are doing is within the ambit of all international laws and treaties”, Onyia said. He called on the Amnesty International and the United Nations to urgently intervene into what he called ‘the use of Federal might and power against lawful Biafrans’. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/02/biafra-group-calls-ndigbo-boycott-election/ |

Ahead of the March 28 and April 11 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has procured about 20,000 backup card readers and 35,000 backup batteries. The procurement of the backup devices is part of the precautionary measures by INEC to forestall challenges that may arise during the accreditation process of the elections. Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES. Mr. Idowu said the Commission had learned from the Ghana experience where card readers for election could not work due to battery problems In the case of Nigeria, although the card readers could work for 12 hours when used continuously where as accreditation process is to last for only five hours, he said, yet the Commission has procured about 35,000 spare batteries, “so that if, for whatever reason, there may be a challenge with the battery, one can replace it”. Further, he said several integrity tests for the machines had been carried out in the United States, saying they don’t fail easily and are of highest quality. “In spite of that, we have bought nearly 20,000 spares, in addition to 152,000 active card readers, so that if for any reason the card reader malfunctions and can no longer continue, the spares would be deployed at the wards for the exercise,” he added. Similarly, Mr. Idowu noted that if a card reader cannot be replaced before the time for accreditation is over that day, the exercise would be repeated the following day. He said this option is preferred to reverting to manual accreditation by political parties because human error would always arise in such an arrangement. He also said poor mobile connection would not be a challenge as the card readers make use of sim cards, adding that the machines are designed with built-in memory due to poor network coverage that may be experienced in some areas. Mr. Idowu said there were no challenges of data manipulation and use of fake permanent voter cards. He said all the cards are preconfigured for respective polling units and added that after the accreditation of voters, INEC’s central server would receive real time information on the exercise, including the number of accredited voters before the casting of ballot proper would commence. The process, Mr. Idowu said, will check over voting. While briefing the Senate Wednesday, Mr. Jega had said wherever total vote casts are higher than accreditation figure, election would be cancelled in such polling unit. Mr. Idowu further ruled out data manipulation as a challenge, explaining that INEC would receive real-time information on the accreditation exercise and that the system is full proof. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/177304-inec-procures-additional-20000-card-readers-35000-batteries.html?share=email&nb=1 |

The dust raised by the alleged leakage of secret recordings by a senior military officer of how the presidency influenced the June 21, 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State is yet to settle as stakeholders have expressed concerns over the matter. A military intelligence officer, Captain Sagir Koli, who leaked the controversial tape, had alleged that the presidency had arm-twisted the deployed personnel to work for the victory of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, while members of the opposition, the All Progressives Congress (APC), were constantly harassed. The APC candidate in the disputed election and former governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, hinted that some military officers have agreed in principle to appear in court to authenticate the veracity of the clips. He said: “We are already taking appropriate constitutional steps on the matter. In fact, there are soldiers who are ready to testify in court. “There are many Captain Sagir Kolis who are willing to give evidence in the court of law. I am just appealing to all Nigerians to be patient as events unfold”. Fayemi lamented that it was unfortunate that Ekiti was used as a sacrificial lamb for the new rigging technique, saying it failed in Osun because the plot blew into the open with an alleged plot to deploy Momoh to Osun to re-enact Ekiti feat. But, the winner of the poll, Governor Ayo Fayose, described the allegation as one of the familiar antics of the opposition party. Fayose challenged Fayemi and his party to approach the court and tender their evidences against him, if they have any. Commenting, former chairman of the PDP in Ekiti State, Bola Olu-Ojo, dismissed the audio clip describing it as fake. He explained that there was nothing for the legislators to investigate, stressing that the victory of his party in the election was real and genuine. According to him, if the Assembly must investigate it, then it must look for voice experts, but for its none issue. Olu-Ojo, however, said the military could go ahead and dig into the matter if it had time to waste. “For me, I don’t believe in the audio clips. But, if the National Assembly wants to investigate, then they must look for voice experts. Some people cannot concoct something and begin to make noise about it.” In what appeared to be a confirmation of the allegation, Fayose said contrary to the notion that the military worked for the PDP, he was actually blaming the supervising military officer for undue romance with the APC in the recording. The former chairman of Association of Local Government chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON) in Ekiti State, Toba Daramola, in his reaction, urged the National Assembly to commence investigations without further delay. “I think it is just cause. Like the Yorubas used to say, there is no smoke without a fire. “If the military is culpable, then the law must take its course and that will also serve as a deterrent to other politicians who might to abuse their offices and positions to influence polls”. Daramola, an APC chieftain, said since the allegation came to the fore, the image of the country has once again been put to question. He stated that if on the other hand the whole story or allegations is found to be incorrect, it will also put the matter to rest, but insisted that ignoring the matter may send a wrong signal to the outside world. Also, Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Tunji Ogunlola, supported the idea of investigation, saying it would check further harassment of the opposition. Ogunlola, also a member of Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), explained that the deployment of the military may not be totally out of place, but past experiences had shown that the powers-that-be would always use them against the opposition. “So, I think the National Assembly should get to the roots of the matter”, he added. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/02/rigging-tape-ekiti-indigenes-differ-calls-probe/ |

This added 6weeks mehn! You can see how GEJ is trying all his best to please Nigerians. Commissioning this and that, here and there. boko Haram insurgents getting their deserved treatments and so on. I won't be surprised if he offers his eyeballs to a blind Nigerian to gain public sympathy and be re-elected. ..And I am sure if he had not seen the readiness in pple to kick him out, he would never think of doing most of these things..That's just the beauty of democracy for you... Buh its a pity he still believes 6weeks is enough for Nigerians to have a change of mind after learning enough lessons for 6years..."A FOWL THAT IS DESTINED TO DIE MAY RUN FROM "OTUEKE" TO "SAMBISA FOREST" AS IT PLEASES, BUT WILL STILL END UP IN A POT OF SOUP OR DIE IN THE PROCESS OF RUNNING, AS GOD PLEASES"

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday continued his consultations with traditional rulers from the South West with visits to three of them drawn from Lagos and Oyo States. His first port of call was the palace of the Alara or Ilara Epe, Oba Akeem Adesanya, who is also the Chairman of the Epe Divisional Council of Obas. The second leg of the visits took him to Oyo State where he met the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III. Jonathan’s message at the three palaces were the same: that the monarchs should support his re-election in the forthcoming general elections so that his government can consolidate on its achievements. At the palace of the Soun of Ogbomosho, Jonathan asked the monarch to compile the list of Federal Government’s abandoned or ongoing projects in the town and hand them over to the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, for onward transmission to him. “We promise that we will do our best to move Nigeria forward. Oloye Akinjide will collect the list of abandoned and ongoing projects from you (the monarch). When you send us back, we will complete them. We may not do much between now and election time,” he said. Jonathan said while his administration had done much, it shall consolidate on its achievements if he was reelected in March. He listed the areas his administration had achieved a lot to include agriculture, education, power and health among others. He said only the Peoples Democratic Party government can implement the report of the national conference, while other parties would lock it up inside a cupboard. The President reiterated his position that with his administration’s power reforms and full privatisation of the sector, Nigerians would take power supply for granted within the next few years. http://www.punchng.com/news/jonathan-meets-alaafin-two-other-yoruba-monarchs-promises-to-implement-national-conferences-report-olalekan-adetayo-abuja-president-goodluck-jonathan-on-saturday-continued-his-consultations-wi/ |

barristerMDGs:My friend, the summary of what I can say is "GOD KNOWS BEST"...these points you raised are almost the same as what came to my mind after my previous comment..
