Shalom428:Kudos to you for what you have and the positive mindset too. |
Shalom428:There so many people on this forum that have multiples of N200m in their portfolio and they are still hustling for more because they dont see it as huge enough. Remember, the more the higher the taste. Reason why Dangote still dey find money ![]() |
EDGEof2MORO:Please give us a break and shut it! Which ''Christians in West Bank'' are you talking about? Judea and Samaria (aka West Bank) had more than 80% Christian in population when it was under Israel's control. Today, the Palestinians have marginalized and isolated the Christians to the extent that there is less than 20% Christians in Judea and Samaria. So what are you talking about? The Christians in Judea and Samaria (West Bank) are not the ones fighting Israel because they know the truth and history of the land, as contained in the Bible. It is the Islamic fundamentalists among the Palestinians that are fighting Israel and Israel is also fighting back. |
Toluway:You are not entirely wrong. But in this context, we are discussing if N200m is a really big sum of money assuming you still need to build or buy a house from it and continue living fine as an average Nigerian |
Shalom428:My brother, I appreciate your point. For me, N200m was huge money up to 2023. But the way things are going now with successive govts, N200m may not be that big anymore. Just ask yourself: how much will remain after you build or buy a 4-bedroom bungalow flat or duplex? |
SarkinYarki:Oando got to as high as N90 so why didn't the people who bought 15 years ago sell and make profit? I bought Oando at N5 some years back and I am happy I did. Just limit yourself to what you know personally from experience and not generalized loose comments. |
BreakingNews21:I think they already have a subsidiary that is going into mining. |
Toluway: ![]() Remember N200m is not up to $150,000 any more ooo. If you buy one house (a 4 bedroom flat bungalow or duplex) from the N200m or N150m, how much would remain assuming you decide to retire? Remember that some people also borrowed to invest and they have to repay the loan from the gains. We thank God for his mercies; N200m may sound huge but the actual value has dropped. |
Payunsin:Just follow the market and monitor the prices. Access Bank seems underpriced right now, but you have to be very patient for the long term. |
GeeKudi:It is not only because of the retrospective application, which Taiwo Oyedele himself agrees to be unfair, unreasonable, punitive and insensitive. It is also because they have increased the pre-existing CGT rate for companies from 10% to 30%; and then introduced PAYE tax rate on gains made by individuals, which may be as high as 24%. How does a a struggling investor risk his/her life savings to make N200m and then give govt N48m? |
KarlTom:EFCC should not complain when this dude makes his several billions in NGX. Dude has been paying his dues selflessly to this forum and humanity! Oando, Aradel, Seplat, Conoil must vomit the billions! |
Prigidypogodo:You ignore Osinbajo who made the statement and the journalist the published the news. But their ethnicity/tribe is what you want to attack.? Interesting |
Potvalor:Excellent! Any Eurobond issuance by a relatively stable democracy in Africa with 8%-10% yield would be oversubscribed at the moment because yields are low in US Europe, Asia.etc |
AfahaAbia: |
AfahaAbia:If you really bought Oando shares and also follow or monitor news about the company, AGM, and read their financial reports then this should not be news to you. All these have been mentioned or highlighted by Oando several months ago before now. |
Agbalowomeri: ![]() Until these people made Agba annoyed! The annoyance dey go round small small! ![]() |
KarlTom:Do you take this Senate under Akpabio very serious? In Akpabio's own words, you can continue to take them serious while ''Akpabio continues to eat"! How does a nation that produces and relies heavily on oil revenue for almost everything make this kind of law? Jokers! |
peekspot:See the kind of dress the British woman is putting on! Spits! |
Prof, please calm down. If you don't mind, can I open the fridge and bring some couple of cold bottles?.....you know what I mean now? ![]() |
Namaster:Don't mind Taiwo and other promoters of the new law. They just copied and pasted laws that they don't have the right infrastructure and environment to implement. My intended discussion with my stock brokers is only to ensure that I don't miss out on units of the particular stocks when I want to repurchase it in future. But I will pay all the brokerage fees, NGX commission, VAT on the transaction etc. If it is permissible by NGX/SEC rules, the FIRS would not do jack! All that would be required is to pay the right taxes, if any. |
awesomeJ:Theoretically, you are correct. There was a similar 10% CGT in Finance Act 2021 which was never implemented. So let's see what happens The main focus was on 15% VAT which was later reversed to 7.5% by NASS. The whole law was more or less smuggled and rushed in after the govt got the political class to support it after VAT increment was dropped. Most Nigerians were not aware of the 30% CGT and other aspects. |
While it makes sense for us to have backup strategies to avoid or minimize the impact of the CGT, let us all add our voice to condemn it on every forum and support the move to get it suspended, reversed or scrapped if possible. We have nothing to lose, but everything to gain if we are able to do that. |
awesomeJ:Yes, that is correct. But in my case, I will be fine selling about 35% of my portfolio before Jan 2026. The remaining 65% is strategic investment. I can even afford to sell below the N10m gain annually to beat the CGT law. But I will also discuss with my brokers if I can arrange some cross-deals with them to beat the CGT law if possible. |
The shallow and hollow argument some people make sometimes is to compare taxes being paid in developed countries and say the same must be paid here, without putting things in proper context. They are not even able to demand accountability from those who collect and embezzles the taxes and public funds. Sometimes, they even support the looters. Developed countries provide jobs to their graduates and qualified citizens. They provide unemployment benefits, housing and accommodation., They take good care of the aged, elderly and sick ones. Their president and politicians live a modest lifestyle, and some even use public transport to go to work on daily basis. Over here, graduates roam the streets for 5 years without a job, no unemployment benefits, no govt housing or accommodation, your parents are old and sick with no govt support. The politicians are living an ostentatious lifestyles. An illiterate Councilor or LG chairman is earning more than medical doctors , lecturers and professors. You provide accommodation, water, electricity, neighbourhood security, roads etc. by yourself. The additional responsibilities and services that you provide is more than 35% additional tax to the govt. |
pluto09:I cannot sell EVERYTHING in my portfolio. E get why! But I can sell SOME for my strategic needs and projections, while I keep the rest because I know this govt and CGT cannot last forever. |
pluto09:The CGT will affect everyone because prices will drop drastically when liquidity evaporates in the market. I can only sell based on my strategic needs and projections, for now. Every investor is not the same. I cannot just sell off everything just because a clueless and gullible govt. has come to disrupt the market because they want to extort investors. |
Agbalowomeri: ![]() Really? You mean only the ''rich'' have stocks that would fall in price? It is the so called ''rich people'' who trade in large volumes (i.e. provide liquidity) in the market that enables the ''not-so-rich people'' to also trade and make profits and gains. Once a section of the market is affected, others will be affected too. It is not only about the CGT. It is also because prices and trades will fall drastically |
Agbalowomeri: ![]() You better join us to tell Taiwo and his master that they better suspend that CGT thing before it is too late! Otherwise, the ''kasala'' go reach city, town, village and hamlet....everybody everywhere |
Agbalowomeri:Does it mean you don't have any stocks in your NGX portfolio that has fallen in price, so far? If there is, then you are also in the red. |
The CGT tax kicks in whenever an investor attempts to cash out. Rolling over from Dec to the following year does not exempt anyone as long as the proceeds exceed N150m or the gain exceed N10m. The historical purchase costs will be deducted from the sales proceeds and then the relevant CGT tax rate will be applied. Unless this law is suspended or reversed, it would affect the NGX very badly. |
Agbalowomeri:Orun ya bo, kii se oro enikan! When heaven falls, everyone will be affected. |
