jln115: Yes no doubt we will replace them, but I seriously doubt it will be within the next 5 years...besides Denels new truck still needs more developing, testing ect ect so even it won't be available for at least 3 years. Depends how serious the defence force needs the truck it can be fielded early next year. The development takes time during peaceful times. |

africaken254: does india have a presence on AAD 2016 expo,i would presume they would have also displayed their HAL Tejas jet Yes. No. Would have been a waste of funds if they did. The reason that Brazilian medium lift aircraft isn't here. The Super Mushak is here though. |

Denel Dynamics - Cheetah C-Ram missile
https://www.janes.com/images/assets/771/63771/p1691502.jpg
Rheinmetall to develop a missile that will be integrated with the Skyshield system to give it a counter rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) capability, it was announced during the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) show held in South Africa 14-18 September.
"The concept was born out of two factors: one it is a business opportunity that we have identified and secondly to counter a threat that has emerged in the [African] continent. The South African defence force has been deployed on peacekeeping missions and we realised that they are under threat from mortars and artillery at relatively close range, so we needed a quick way of protecting our soldiers," Tsepo Monaheng, the chief executive officer of Denel Dynamics told IHS Jane's .
http://www.janes.com/article/63800/super-quick-c-ram-missile-aad16d2
"The Cheetah C-RAM missile system is seamlessly integrated into the Oerlikon Skyshield for a very powerful, layered air defence system, comprising a command post, one Skyshield sensor unit, two Oerlikon twin guns and up to two Cheetah missile launchers containing up to 60 missiles each. The system has a high level of automation and requires only a handful of operators for deployment. It provides area protection for forward bases at a 2.5km radius and can engage targets at a range of up to 6km." Wonder if it'll be offered as part of Denel ISM's Sable system. Similar to the Lockheed Martin EAPS. The market isn't crowded yet. Looks like we'll never abandon the apartheid era naming of our weapon systems after animals. |

bidexiii: ON THE WATCHOUT.......... EW. Here we see men the of Nigerian army EW unit jamming and tapping into the communications of BH. The success of these operations has reduced BH tactical threat, as the group can't communicate and coordinate effectively. They are now reduced to using pigeons and human runners to communicate. |

frumentius: Good lord! Have I just persuaded you? BTW, I agree with you that Hornets are not optimal for direct action. But they pack enough punch to defend themselves. As proven in Bangui. Though, really, we should'nt have been utilising them in that scenario. They still performed suberbly: whilst taking fire 6 Hornets, their 12.7mm, 20mm, MLRS and 35 operators held off almost 2000 Seleka and 15 technicals with dushkas for almost 8 hours. Besides the point: SF are a strategic asset and should never fight like infantry; represents a strategic failure as far as our military and doctrine is concerned. Which then brings up another question:
If, as our latest defence review proposes, our parabats are to play a supplementary SOF/direct action role to SF, what vehicle is appropriate? Something like the REVA FAV would do nicely, much like the abandoned Jakkals used to. Come to think, STTEP somewhat did the same with your 72 MSF. Conceive it as a direct action unit that is. Though I'm now getting reports that momentum has not been maintained .\What
Pic 1 - 3: Jakkals in Para and para-rescue (7 med battalion) service;
Pic 4: Reva FAV. My problem with the paras is that we have one regular battalion. And already they support peace missions in company sized units on the continent. The army in my opinion needs another regular specialist fire force/light type of under strength battalion with SF assistance and influence. Able to deploy via air or land. 32 battalion should have been as part of the political transformation had it's name changed. |

frumentius: With good reason, for E&E. Prior to FIB deployment, we studied Ugandan, Zimbo, Namib, Angolan, Rwandese, Burundian, Sudanese and Chadian (don't ask me how we got them ) reports on their adventures in the DRC. A stand out for me was Lt. Enslin's E&E efforts when his Hawk was short down, and earned the Bronze Cross of Zimbabwe Medal for his tribulations. 21 at the time, and the 3rd Zim pilot to be shot down, the Rwandese shot him down at 1000 feet in his Hawk and he E&E'd for 5 days, because he didn't have the proper equipment. Through the jungle he maneuvered, and we in SA learned some lessons. Our Rooivalk pilots are accordingly equipped for lessons learned in earlier in Angola, Zim, insurgencies in the SADC region and the jungle warfare in the DRC.
Enslin now works as a senior officer instructing the Saudi Air Force. For the Zim cousins: @ngaduh et al: does the famed Zim Air Force Jungle Dustbin Trophy continue? Last I heard, then Lt. Midnight, now OC commanding our 2nd Squadron won it when last we went up to your neck of the woods.
P.S. For those who don't know what the "Dustbin Trophy" is: The Rhodesian air force was towards the end of the war almost had half of it's aircraft either South African or manned by Saffers. Sent up to be exposed to ops. Don't mention the Saudis. |

ViceAdmiral: Wait so SAPS has a counter assault unit,a TRT and the Special Task Force right? whats the difference between TRT, task force and counter assault unit in their employment? CAT belongs to the PPU. The STF and TRT differ in employment and training. The former is trained to deal with high risk situitions(Terror...ists, hostage etc). There's the NIU (National intervention unit) which supports the STF. Here's a simple analogy with regards to the military: STF = SF. NIU = Pathfinders. TRT = Paratroopers. When things get hot for the normal officers the TRT is called. |

gees9: Sounds like quite the logistical feat! All flossies or some private Ilyushins? Are these other nations comfortable outsourcing their security to SASF in that manner? Have PPU stopped their continental hubris of recent years? Was an incident in Ivory Coast where they transported pretty much the entire local convoy and had an overt dress code: police BDUs, R5s, UMPs etc. Was really embarrassing to watch and I know the SASFB are a different breed, but incidents like that dent our image continentally. Awesome photos btw. On the CSIR pod I don't know anything further, just saw it on a regular local defence commentator's feed. You're gonna have to help us out! I like the new camouflage of the counter assault unit.

frumentius: With current global economic conditions, DoD and Denel are at best overly optimistic or at worst naive. Now that they've come out publicly, I can confirm that an upgrade of the current MK1 to MK1.1 has been approved, within the next 5 years. The upgrades include sights and targeting sytems, work on the cannon, acquisition and integration of the FZ275 LGR : Semi-Active Laser (SAL) Guided Rocket (successfully tested on the Rooivalk last October and therefore Denel won't start integration work from scratch), improved payload and somework on the pylons, and better survivability etc. In the early 2000s there was talk of developing fire control radar for the Valkie. |

Two very different planes designed for the same role. L-15 for it's beauty. Back when we still needed fighters the Russians brought their SU-35 down for the AAD and exercised(dog fight) with our Cheetahs. |
