The first picture shows members of 5SAI with the rifle during urban training. They're deployed in DRC and second one is that of 6SAI whom were in the DRC.

Helghast: oh jah and about the R4, I don't how the only people I've seen so far with upgraded R4 are guys who are based in S.A, one would expect that the guys going on actual deployments would be the ones carrying new rifles.

You might have seen pictures of 5SAI soldiers during training in EC with the rifles. There aren't a lot of pictures of SANDF combat soldiers in operational areas.

Yes,the SANDF uses both upgraded R1 and R4 in the DM role. Snipers are usually found in the support elements of the force.
