On using amex credit card

I used my amex credit card at the beginning of the month, my statement date is in a few days but each time I log in, it says payment not due at this time. When I tried to pay, it say you can only make on this date everyone...something along that line.

Please do I need to wait for my statement date before making payment?
If I made the payment on my statement closing date, would that be fine?

What does it mean by you can only make payment on this date...does that mean I can only pay on that date every month?

I have set up a direct debit for the account but I understand that having just set up the direct debit, I may still need to pay this bill myself before the direct debit will be activated.

Please help answer the questions above and kindly add other points you think will be useful for a new user

Thanks

Please elders how can I go about this, I bought something on Facebook marketplace on cash on delivery basis. It arrived all wrapped up and I paid. As soon as the driver left, I noticed one of the order was not included. I asked for refund they said they don't do refund, bring back my item, they said until they have another order to dispatch in my area and till now they've not delivered it. Is there a way I can resolve this please? The guy is no longer responding on chat but I have the driver's number.

I didn't carry last for this amex card application o. Thank you all for the information you keep sharing here. I applied, I was not approved immediately they asked me to provide proof of address and identity. I sent those, they sent another email that I should send a bank statement that shows my current address. I sent it. After sending and I didn't hear from them, I called their customer care. The person I spoke with reviewed the attachment I sent while on the call and approved 4k for me. Naso I take collect credit card in a little over a month of arriving here.

ProfJYK I used your referral code o, what are you sharing for your followers

Na to go dey read all the tips on managing credit card remain. Thanks everyone.

ProfJYK:

Yes You Can. I got my first one as a student barely 3 months in this country.

I recommend co-branded cards or loyalty card for starters as they demand less stringent requirements for beginers.

Try the free British Airways American Express card using this referral link below.

Please don't be shy to embellish your income small by entering something substantial to prevent rejection. You can put up 10 #19,000 in other income as well

Please ensure you pay your full outstanding monthly and don't carry over more than 30% credit limit utilisation at the statement close date. Anything above 30% reported to the registries has an adverse effect on credit score.

Ps. I am also a beginner in the UK.

Interest-free periods vary.
Some card issuers offer up to 2 1/2 years interest free.
There are also balance transfer cards, through which you can transfer accumulated debt from one card to another, some of which also offer long interest-free periods.

In theory, you could buy an item on a credit card (for instance brand new PCs, phones or the proverbial Nairaland student's car in the region of £1k, using a money transfer card) and not pay a penny in interest other than the minimum monthly payment/money transfer fee on that debt for up to 3 1/2 years if you really wanted to.

As has been previously pointed out, all credit is debt, so ......

@LagosismyHome Thank you, I've confirmed that they still do this, they worked out the 15 hours to be 2 and half days so I'll have to pay for the remaining days. I think 5 pounds per hour

I think private nursery take the 15hours. Some allow you to pay some extra hours to make it a full day or spread it across fewer days and longer hours but that only in private nursery and not primary school nursery..... for example there is no way I could do 15hours or 30hours. That would have been so stressful dropping a child for 3 hours,I just couldn't. The nursery worked the 30 hours to be 3 full day for my kids so I did that and paid for 2 extra days. Something like that so check with a private nursery in your area and see how they can structure 15hours but don't know if they still do that

Thank you so much for this. Make I swiftly go embrace the Catholic school. I will get to that driving matter with time. It still feels strange seeing the driver's seat on right hand side Thank God for the "road bells" on the road. I cross the road very consciously now make I no go enter mouth of oncoming vehicles When I Sabi how to walk for road, I will go back to driving God no go shame us.

Now weighing the option of taking my 3 year old to the school because taking them will be going in opposite directions every morning and noon plus the 3 year old is only eligible to 15 hours so will close earlier. Don't know if we have energy to do school runs 4 times a day and still manage to work. This obodo oyinbo is not for the faint hearted, I didn't realize how much soft life I was enjoying in naija, but not complaining, na we find them come

Mamatukwas post

From experience if they say no space they mean it. Put your 3year old in the school you want then take the older one to the Catholic school offered.

You might have a stronger chance of changing later when one child already goes to your 1st option. In the meantime find out if there is any provision by the council for school pickup and drop off. Over here in Scotland some councils arrange it for you if the school is more than 5 miles I think.

Sha check. Then start working on your driving asap so the kids will stop harassing you smiley

There are very strict rules that only 30 students to a class in the UK . Nobody goes against that rule and sadly with immigration , new visa coming out you have people relocating to the country daily . However if a school has 30 in that class, there is really nothing anybody can do and that is just it

You either accept the school given and maybe stay on waiting list or take the school given and move houses. Move somewhere closer to the school so just note . Once a class has 30 students , expect if a student is leaving there is absolutely nothing the school or council can do so bear that in mind . An appeal will not change the fact that there is no space , neither can they then drive another child to accommodate yours (because technically speaking that the only way to create space)

@Lagosismyhome thank you so much for the prompt feedback. I appreciate the insight.

Hello Papas and Mommas, please how do I resolve this - we applied for primary school mid year transfer for my child but the council just responded that the 3 schools we selected don't have space and suggested a catholic school not within trekking distance of our house. Even using bus, I've noted that we may take a bus or 2 if we don't want to trek for like 20 minutes. Since moving here, the only complaint the kids have had is the length of time we have to trek as it is not what they're used to and been asking us to go buy car again so I anticipate the long trekking to school will elicit some complaints from them. I'll like to avoid this if I can as it won't be convenient for us to dash to go pick them too.

I don't know if to take this school offered while trying to appeal for our preferred school and if the appeal process won't just be a waste of time.

Please apart from mentioning the inconvenience of commuting to the school and possibly preferring a school close to our house address, what other reasons can we site. Meanwhile, 2 of the 3 schools we reached out have a space for my 3 year old, it's only the older one we've not been able to find a school close to the house for yet.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this will be highly appreciated. Can't wait for the kids to settle into school so I can focus on work. Their energy level and distractions no be here.

We had previously mentioned that we're new in the area and country, will like a position in one of the 3 schools to enable us and the kids meet other kids and parents and integrate into the new environment. Also mentioned proximity.

Thank you in advance ☺

Yup, it's normal. TV License is not transferable so you can get yours by paying about £165 per Annum and it can be broken down to monthly. I usually advise people to just pay it instead of arguing that they don't have a TV because even if you watch Live programmes on any device (phone, tablet, etc) within the Apartment, you are still eligible so instead of keep proving periodically that yoh don't watch BBC or any other programme in the list, just close eye and pay for the license.

@Solumtoya thank you for the response

Being on tier 2 visa, please is my 3 year old eligible to free 15 or 30 school hours? Trying to play by the book so I don't do anything unknowingly to jeopardize processing my ILR later. Thank as you share your insight.

It’s a normal letter.
Call them tomorrow to tell them you don’t have any TV and you are not subscribing to and TV channel. They would cancel it from their side and send you a new letter confirming the cancellation

Oh ok, thank you for this.

Please help me reason this my question o, I just got an apartment barely settled in and TV license people sent a letter to say they've opened investigation to come visit the house and confirm we don't watch live TV.

As a background to the above, it appears there has been series of correspondence between the former tenant and TV license people which went unanswered before we moved in.
Thinking of calling them on phone to say we've only just moved into UK and not aware of the previous correspondence, and we opened this letter because it read legal occupier, and we are now the legal occupier and also to say we don't have TV, no plan of getting TV any time soon and we've not been watching live TV since arriving here. Is this OK to say

Please your opinions are highly welcome. Thanks

Uk is mostly current account for everyday activities. Savings is meant for savings . Lol. In summary it's totally fine

@lagosismyhome Thank you very plenty. I've now gone ahead to deposit some change into the account. I intially thought I clicked a wrong option that resulted in current account being opened for me.

I really appreciate everyone for their response. I only just arrived but feels like I don tey for here cos of the wealth of knowledge I've been soaking up from here. May God bless you all for your contributions!

I'm currently house hunting for me and my dependants and I found a 2 bedroom apartment a with a rent to buy option for 800pcm. It is unfurnished and i will have to do the flooring in the lounge and 2 bedrooms. The toilet and kitchen has been done already by the landlord. There is oven and hob but no freezer and washing machine.

I'm concerned about how much it will cost me to purchase all the things to make it comfortable and also do the floor which will be in addition to my monthly council tax, utility and other bills.

The attraction for me is that it is the closest house within walking distance that I have seen to my office and possibly the option of owning the apartment 5 years down the line with the option of rent to buy.

My other concern is that the 4 schools I saw close to the house are just good schools and one without rating. In the event that I want my kids to go to outstanding schools, is there a possibility for them being accepted in outstanding schools even if they are far from the house address? Please all the elders in the house, help me put mouth o. Is the house worth taking, what other things should I consider before concluding. I just booked a viewing appointment

But there are currently no appointment dates for B1/B2 category. If the husband is waiting to come through B1B2 visa, the wife may have completed her studies already before he will get the visa (maybe that is why they have been giving families recently). So is it not possible for them to leverage on that reason and just apply together. I have also read somewhere that if your spouse will be joining you, it's better to apply together.

I think she can package this and try to confidently present her case to the VO. There is no hard and fast rule about these things. I believe they can give it a try...my thoughts

To be honest?

You have a great profile. Married with Kids, excellent family ties (assuming you can demonstrate that clearly to the VO)

Okay, going with your 3 year old is reasonable and doesn't need much explanation, as young kids are dependent on their parents.

But then you're trying to raise a red flag where you really shouldn't. Your husband is your sponsor, but he's willing to abandon his business from which he supposedly sponsors you to go with you to the US 'to help you settle down and to come in and out just to check up on you'.
That is not the qualification for an F2 visa, and would lead to denial of your application.

It effectively turns your strong family ties here in Nigeria (your husband whom you're unwilling to abandon to abscond to the states) into a potential weakness (migrant family - Husband (sponsor) abandoning his business for an extended period of time for relatively frivolous reasons (ignoring the fact that that's not even the use of an F2 Visa).
If he can leave his business to follow you, then he has no ties to Nigeria, and him effectively leaving with you deletes your ties as well.

Go with your child. Explain to the V.O that you have to return because you will need to be with your husband in future, (of course also explain how the course will help your present or future career). Take advantage of that family tie.

If your husband wants to come 'check up' on you, let him apply for a B1/B2 in future. That way his business is a strength(financial ties), and 'visiting his wife and child who he hasn't seen in a while and miss so much' is a compelling reason which any VO will sympathize with.

If in future, you get a PhD and assistantship that can cover the funding for your whole family, then you can apply for an F2 visa for him.
