Politics / Dame Patience Jonathan. Why The Title? by MisterMan(m): 7:19pm On Sep 05, 2014
Dame Patience Jonathan. Why the title? Every time this woman is being referred to, I keep hearing the title Dame. Is she really a Dame or people just don’t know the meaning of Dame? For avoidance of doubt, here are the different meanings of Dame:
noun
1. (initial capital letter)
1. the official title (emphasis mine) of a female member of the Order of the British Empire, equivalent to that of a knight.
2. the official title (emphasis mine) of the wife of a knight or baronet.
2. (formerly) a form of address to any woman of rank or authority.
3. a matronly woman of advanced age; matron.
4. Slang: Sometimes Offensive. a term used to refer to a woman:
Some dame cut me off and almost caused an accident.
5. Ecclesiastical. a title of a nun in certain orders.
6. a mistress of a dame-school.
7. Archaic. the mistress of a household.
8. Archaic. a woman of rank or authority, especially a female ruler.

Source: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dame
Note that definitions 2 thru 8 do NOT apply because this is a title; just like Mrs. Etc. The question is: Has Oga Jonathan been conferred with the title of knight. Perhaps my memory failed me, maybe she was a member of Order of the British Empire.
Religion / Pastor Oyakhilome’s Wife Files For Divorce In London Court, Citing Adultery by MisterMan(m): 4:06pm On Aug 30, 2014
The dissolution of the marriage between Christ Embassy Church founder, Pastor Christian Oyakhilome, and his wife, Rev. Anita Odegwa Oyakhilome, has entered the final phase, TheCable can report. Pastor Chris and Anita Oyakhilome undergoing divorce

The wife is seeking divorce on the grounds of “unreasonable behaviour” and “adultery”. She outlined several allegations against the pastor which TheCable cannot publish for legal reasons. The divorce case, with Suit No FD14D01650, was filed on April 9, 2014 at Divorce Section A, Central Family Court, First Avenue House, High Holborn, London, UK, on Anita’s behalf by Attwaters Jameson Hill Solicitors, a full-service law firm with expertise in commercial law and a strong consumer focus in family, wills and estate, personal injury law and medical negligence.

Efforts to reconcile the popular couple, whose church is one of the biggest denominations in Nigeria and has branches all over world, have failed. They have two teenage daughters, Sharon and Charlyn. Oyakhilome is the president of Believers’ Love World Inc, the registered name of the Christian ministry, while his wife is the vice-president. The pastor, according to an elder of the church, has denied allegations of adultery and believes his wife is being influenced by “bad friends” who are intent on destroying their home. While Anita believes she has been relegated in the scheme of things in the church, her husband has reportedly accused her of trying to usurp power and authority above her seniors in the ministry.

Sources told TheCable that the pastor had been making efforts to avoid divorce in the hope that the wife would eventually have a change of mind. However, TheCable can also report that the decree nissi was served on the charismatic pastor in his hotel room during a recent visit to the UK. Decree nissi, in legal terms, is like a yellow card in a football match which is a precursor to a red card (“decree absolute”) if no new evidence is provided to stall proceedings. Church insiders said Oyakhilome had been hoping for rapprochement, but he was left with no option than to receive the papers when the lawyers cornered him at his hotel in London. The decree absolute, which will effectively end the marriage, is expected to be issued soon while terms of the divorce will be worked out by the lawyers on both sides.

TheCable learnt Anita recently wanted to go public with the details of her allegations against the husband but reached an informal agreement to sheathe her sword in the interest of the church. Oyakhilome is regarded as one of the richest and most influential pastors in Nigeria, and co-authors the fast-selling Christian daily devotional, Rhapsody of Realities, with the wife. However, following the strain in the marriage, the wife had been complaining to friends that her husband had stopped the payment of royalties due her from the devotional literature. “She complained of being deliberately starved of funds, perhaps to bring her to her knees in the belief that she would eventually return to her matrimonial home and mend things,” a church member told TheCable in the UK.

A wealthy Zimbabwean businessman, who is into telecoms, is one of the biggest financiers of the London branch of the church which Anita pastors along with other branches in Europe. When the crisis got to a head, the Zimbabwean stopped funding the church ─ some said in solidarity with Oyakhilome, his close friend and neighbour in Johannesburg, South Africa. However, Oyakhilome was said to have been shocked when the wife announced at a fundraiser that she was sowing a “seed” (donation) of $1 million ─ despite her assumed lack of access to funds. Matters got to a head on Sunday, July 13, 2014, when some relatives of Anita locked up the London branch of the church to protest against the “humiliation” being meted out to their sister ─ who had not overseen services at the branch since November 2013.

Some church members had sometime in May 10, 2014 launched facebook campaign, asking: “Where is Rev. Anita Oyakhilome?” They said Pastor Chris and Rev. Anita must unite “for the sake of the gospel, the church and their two beautiful daughters”. They quoted Malachi 2:16 in the Message Bible: “I hate divorce, says the God of Israel.” The facebook page, which has over 3,300 “likes”, was opened with a stated mission: “This is a Call to Prayer for all believers who understand God’s heart concerning marriage and a Call to Action by Pst. Chris. #DoWhatYouPreach”. Officials of the church quickly moved to deny any rift between the pastor couple. One official, Kenneth Achumasara, told the media last June: “I can tell you authoritatively that there is no issue between Pastor Chris and his wife, Anita… If you go to the UK now you will see her along with the kids. She is still with him and there is no issue between them. I have been with him for 22 years and the Pastor Chris I know cannot even utter such words as reported. He will never address such a gathering. She will soon be in Nigeria for a programme and I will definitely invite you to have access to her.”

cap28: I wish these two faced hypocritical western leaders would leave this man's family to mourn him in peace.

The only head of state that should be given the honour of attending Madiba's funeral should be Castro who helped fund and train the armed wing of the ANC, the likes of Obama, Cameron and Netanyahu should be banned from attending this ceremony as their countries were staunch supporters of aparthied. they also still beleive in white supremacy and still practice racism in their own countries with Israel openly practising its own aparthied system.

Mba Biko. In his life time, Madiba FORGAVE ALL. That is one of those things that made his truly great. To do that will reduce his stature. 91 Heads-of-state for his funeral! There is no man on earth taht has this 'record'. We Africans should stand tall and proud that an African was this great

Career / Re: Encouragement And Advice For Graduate Jobseekers by MisterMan(m): 2:45pm On Nov 25, 2013
I have read thru the topics. Things are not as bad as it seems. A lot of people are so pessimistic that they already have this bad attitude. There are many problems with job seekers. Here I will try and analyse some. Before I go on, please do NOT misunderstand me. I am not saying the jobs are plentiful, but the main problem in most cases is that job seekers are inadequate in the most basic things: writing good resumes and horrible preparation to interview.
Resume Writing: When you see what applicants put together as resume, you will be embarrased. The purpose of resume is to sell yourself as a product. The resume they put together tells employer NOT
to call them for interview. Same goes for cover letter. If you can't get these things straight, the possibility of being called for interview is virtually zero.
While reading this thread, I remembered an old thread and I had to go and dig it out. Please take your time to read the thread, from beginning, you will be doing yourself a lot of good, and it is very funny, though I am not talking about the entertainment value. Here is the link to it:

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-129847.64.html

The above link is the page 3 of it and I will quote, for your convenience, what somebody wrote (she should know because she is in human resources department

Whilst reading all the posts here, I couldn't help but laugh and feel horrified at the same time.

The other day, someone told me what a multinational company MD said about Nigerian graduates and I honestly couldn't help but agree. He said the jobs are there that in fact they really need people seriously in their firm but they just couldn't get capable people to fill in the positions. (Emphasis mine)I agree with him because:

1. I have had experience with recruiting and its really really tough getting someone with adequate capabilities
2. Going by the experiences highlighted so far, its easy to see why.

So, here's my own two naira worth of advice to you interviewees:

1. When you are attending any interview, read up as much as you can about the organisation, don't wait until you are called a day before the interview, do this as soon as you send out your cv, if you are really serious. You ask how many companies you want to study on? Well, you don't have to study on any of them, just seek information on them (almost any serious organisation has a website), print out a page or so on the company and keep it, then keep it until a day or two before your interview. When I was going for my interview, I found some bit of information about the organisation in a magazine and i just wrote it down and filed it away, such that at the interview, i appeared to know something about the company. It always amazes me when I ask interviewees who the MD of the company they want to enter is and they have absolutely no idea. It tells me they are not serious. And more than likely I would not pencil them down for the next level.
People simply need to sit up and get things going. A lot of people feel they cannot get jobs because they don't know anybofy. That is not always true. Some people are simply inadequate. Read through some of the horrible sentence some people emit out. Here is what people should do.

1. Learn how to write a first-grade resume. The internet is a very good place to make reasearch with minimum effort. Nairaland is a great place to become more knowledgeable. Here are some articles about writing good resume and cover letter

Be honest; always be able to back up what you say with evidence and specific examples from your experience.
Be positive in tone, choice of words and expectations; convey your self confidence, enthusiasm and professionalism.
Here is a template cover letter document that you can use as guide to writing your own killer cover letter.
The Header
Here's the basic format for the header of a cover letter:
To the right, give your address and the date. Immediately below that, specify the recipient's address and a brief salutation.
The Body
Begin the body of the letter by expressing your interest in the position, the title of the position (and any identifying code listed in the job ad) and where you saw the position advertised.
After this brief intro, begin a new paragraph and spell out in clear, simple and brief sentences how your experience parallels that of the job description. As you're doing this, be sure to refer to your resume.
The Closing
Closing the body of your letter is pretty standard fare.
Specify how you can easily be contacted, the most convenient being your email address, and thank the recruiter for his time. Below is a sample cover letter
Jobs/Vacancies / Cover Letter: Doing It Right by MisterMan(m): 12:10pm On Nov 25, 2013
The cover letter is every bit as important as your resume. In fact, many employers will not even look at your resume if the cover letter is poorly written, disorganized or difficult to read and understand. To under score its importance, I saw somewhere on the internet that over 80 per cent of recruiters surveyed by the Society for Human Resources Management said cover letters are a "necessity" and would not even read a resume without cover letter. And of course, if your resume isn't even read, the chance of getting an interview is virtually zero.
A lot of job seekers do make the mistake; sending resume without accompanying cover letter. Sometimes ago, I was discussing with a younger friend of mine, who has been sending resumes without cover letter. I guess a lot of people have this wrong opinion because, usually the ad might say, send your resume to … Anytime you see something like this, make sure cover letter is sent as well.
Doing a cover letter poorly is bad as well. A whopping 76 per cent of recruiters surveyed said they would not consider applicants who had errors in their cover letters. This shows you are not detailed oriented and you have poor communication skill. Therefore, it is important to give the same careful consideration and attention to the preparation of cover letters as you gave to your resume.
General Guidelines and Suggestions for Preparing Cover Letters
Show what you can do for the reader, not what you want the reader to do for you; keep the focus on your qualifications as they relate to the position you are seeking.
Write clearly and simply; avoid jargon and overly complex or lengthy sentences; say what you have to say directly and succinctly.
Business letters are formal rather than informal communications
Keep it brief; a one-page letter of 3 - 4 paragraphs is sufficient; your cover letter should never be more than one page long. It is important to feature only the strongest points in your cover letter, as the letter should be no longer than one page. Almost one quarter of recruiters surveyed by the Society for Human Resources Management said they would not consider applicants who submitted cover letters that exceeded a page.
Mention one or two specific accomplishments or strengths that demonstrate your expertise or proficiency and make the reader want to know more, then refer the reader to your resume for more information.
Always keep the reader in mind; make your letters easy to read and keep to the point; demonstrate that you understand and can use sound business writing principles in your communications.
Produce high quality, error-free copy; follow the guidelines used in preparing your resume and be sure to proofread carefully; use the same font and pitch used in your resume, and make your letter look as much like your resume as possible.
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by MisterMan(m): 10:39am On Nov 20, 2013
To all the doctors in the house, thanks to you all. I am very grateful.
In software development, we have a saying: if it ain't broke, don't fix. I think I will leave things as they are. It is not life threatning. It will be really irresponsible to have to go on with that, knowing the state of our health facilities in Nigeria. From my personal experience, about 75% of people who die should not die if things are 'normal' in Nigeria. How I wish she could meet you in person. She would be very proud of you. And by the way, she wants to study medicine.
ziga:

Since you suggested that the lump is slow growing and the CT doesn't show anything life threatening, your decision whether or not to proceed with surgery should depend on
- how severe the problem is. If she is having disabling headaches frequently.
- how easy the surgery will be (you don't want your daughter to undergo major surgery for a problem that is not life threatening)
- how comfortable the surgeon is with removing the lump. Ask politely how many of these conditions he has seen and have him explain the surgery and its possible complications to you.
- your concerns about cosmetic implications on your daughter as she grows older.

From your description, it doesn't sound like it is a major problem, so I would suggest that you get her eyes checked, avoid reading in poor light or using computers and phones for long periods, make sure she doesn't have any dental problems that might give her headaches.

Bottom line, make sure there is nothing else to explain the headaches, if the headaches become bad, go ahead with surgery, but discuss the details of the surgery with your doctor.

I don't really have anything to say. The reason why I am replying is just to say thanks. God bless all of you

I think I have already addressed that. I would love to put my email here so that anybody can communicate with me, but the problem is the issue of spammers. At the end of the day, it is most likely that legit mails like yours will be buried in the maze of junks I will be getting. Hello, come and buy viagra etc will clutter up my mail box. While it is most likely that I missed it, what most people would think is that 'Ah Misterman is arrogant. Misterman doesn't reply mails.'
The simplest think to do is to send me a private mail as I said above.
MisterMan: ... To get in touch, please send private mail
While you won't be able to write any message initially, when I see it, I will reply and then communiction can commence. Don't know how to do that? Very simple. Click on my username; it takes you to View Misterman's Profile. Scroll down. You will see Send Message to Misterman
I am doing this to make life better for others. I will try and respond as quickly as possible, but please note that I have to put food on the table as well, and there will be many people wanting help from me.

Hi docs,
This case concerns my daughter. Let me say something upfront. I appreciate the fact that you have not seen her to examine her properly. There is a bulge in her forehead, as if she fell down, but she didn't fall down. I can't remember when I noticed it but it was years ago, and I don't think she had it at birth. A few months ago, she started complaining about headache, and after some consultations, we were advised to see a doctor. The doctor said we should do CT brain scan. Here is the result of the scan.

There is an expansile isodense lesion involving the frontal sinus with associated patchyareas of hyperdensity (HU=180). No intracranial extension is seenbut there is erosion of the inner table on the left. The rest of the paranasal sinuses and the orbits are within normal limits.
CONCLUSION: BENIGN FRONYAL SINUS. DIFFERENTIALS INCLUDE:
1. FRONTAL SINUS MUCOCOELE
2. INVERTED PAPILLOMA
3. FRONTAL SINUS OSTEOMA

The doctors say she will need to undergo some operation.

I am not sure, but it seems this headache used to occur when she studies hard (I am coaching her in Maths). What is generally your opinion (don't be afraid to give me the hard facts). Thanks for taking the time to read and offer your valued opinion

Other details can go here
He has wisely included course work because it has direct relationship with what he is employed to teach. Knowing that he would be teaching in school and they might likely need such skills such as knowledge of Peachtree and Microsoft Money, he included these. These are the things that will differentiate him from scores of other applicants. He has also included attributes such as being focused, goal-oriented, excellent analytical abilities, numerate and trust-worthy. Though no attributes were specified, he has wisely included these; who would not want to hire somebody that is trustworthy?
Here are some things not to put in a resume
• The word ‘Resume’ or ‘CV’ at the top of the resume
• Fluffy rambling objective
• Salary information (except when specifically asked, which is very rare)
• Full address of former employers
• Reasons for leaving a job

Further Tips: Show you are result oriented wherever possible. Employers are not only interested in your job responsibilities but more importantly in what you accomplished in that duty post. Indicate results of work done, and quantify these accomplishments whenever appropriate. To do this, use what is referred to as Power Verbs: accomplished, achieved, acquired, acted, activated, adapted, added etc. here is an example: Initiated and directed complete automation of the personnel department, resulting in time-savings of over 25%. There is a very good resume we saw on the internet, log on to our website here: www.getemployedquickly.com?source=attractiveresume&website=Nairaland where you will see a download link. Click on the link to download. It is a MS-Word document by a company called Vault. Read it carefully, and most especially the corrected version towards the end. Hopefully, this contribution and the articles I mentioned will go a long way in educating people on how to write effective resumes

There are some things we want you to note. The ad says the candidate must possess good communication skill to work with public, must be outgoing, friendly, enthusiastic, vibrant and financially motivated. Look at what he wrote as his attributes:
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, outgoing, friendly, good communication skill, team player, enthusiastic, good interpersonal skills, and vibrant. Try as much as possible to include the attributes the company is looking for. This is a case, as the Yoruba people would say: 2 ge 4 or ‘eni to feku pade eni to ma pa’. you are saying, in essence that you possess the attributes the company wants. Remember you are advertising yourself. If a company says they want people who sleep very well, know how to eat stone, tell them that your best food is granite and you can sleep for a century at a stretch.
Specifying the class will really boost his chances, so he has rightfully included it.
Note that he did not bother to specify the course he took in school. Specifying that has no advantage whatsoever.

Another important fact: to really write an effective resume, you should personalize as much as possible. This means if you are applying for 5 different positions, you should have five slightly different resumes. This is not as difficult as it seems because of MS-Word and other powerful word processors around. The more of it you do the more adept you become as it is in most things.
To make things clearer, let us look at a job opening. This is an actual job opening that I got when I went to Jobberman, so as to illustrate

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How To Write An Attractive Resume(need Help Pls)! by MisterMan(m): 5:48pm On Nov 09, 2013
This is a pretty old thread that I just stumbled on. This is the sort of thread that doesn’t get many responses because not too many people know the know-how of it. Before I delve into the subject matter, I just want us to know that there are 3 basic resume formats: Chronological, Functional and Combo: the combination of the features of the first two. Each of the first two has their advantages and disadvantages, so what the combo does is to combine the advantages of the two, though at the end of the day, it has its own disadvantages. When the OP talks about attractive (though I prefer the word effective), I presume s\he was talking about chronological resume which is by far the commonest, and in my view, the easiest to read.
In chronological resume, there are some subtle differences in the arrangement for the young and experienced applicants. The inexperienced are relying on their education, whereas the experienced are relying on the experience they have gathered over the years. For the young in the job market, here is the right flow of thought:
Objective
Career Summary
Core Skills
Soft Skills
Class
Courses taken
Institutions Attended
Work Experience
Others
Note that for the inexperienced applicant, class obtained, courses taken at school comes before work experience. Why? The applicant is relying more on his\her training in school rather than experience, which is virtually none. For experienced applicant, it should be ordered in this format:
Objective
Career Summary
Work Experience
School Attended
Others
In the second place, s\he is relying more on experience rather than what was taught. Note that things like courses taken should not be included for the experienced.

Unfortunately, it is true. I like you for having the gut to point out our short comings. I do tell people, we have not seen anything yet. You wonder when Principals and teachers come together to commit examination malpractices. Students would be forced to pay co-operation fees. When I wrote JAMB, there was nothing like post JAMB, because it never leaked. I am a strong apostle of post JAMB. Why conduct exam when it is all farce!
My elder once told me a true story. A husband took his wife’s car for repairs, and he asked the mechanic to embellish the charges with his own. Husband to wife, for God’s sake. Sometimes ago, I read of a man who arranged a kidnap of himself so that he would be able to fleece his siblings.

I do tell people that I am NOT a prophet of doom, but Nigeria is likely to be worse off in the next 10-15 years. 30 years ago was better than 20, 20 better than 10. What with the crop of criminals we are producing now. Parents encourage their children to cheat, schools actively encourage it, and the so called invigilators and supervisors are into it.
I tried to discourage my children from it. About 2 years ago when my son was doing his JSS exam, one of his teachers was beating him because he refused to accept the expo he was being given. The teacher was doing that because he thought he was doing me and his mother a favour by giving him espo. It is this crop of young people who will become judges, governors and military personnel tomorrow. Can we expect anything good in those that have been taught that cheating is good? I remember when I was in University, we have many Indians and Cameroonians studying. I am not sure if we can find a single one now. We have run everything down. What makes us think that everything will be better? As the poster has rightly said, change starts with you and me.

iyatrustee: *yawns* sorry i dozed off. but are you tru now grin grin grin grin
Must you post if you don't have any sensible thing to say?

I am in the same situation. I just copied all the don'ts above. I can't think of ANY that I am guilty off. The last post or thereabout that I think I posted before I saw the ban is this: https://www.nairaland.com/1494100/new-virus-out-beware-dont. Is it an offense to warn Nairaland members of what I saw on the internet and that will be useful to them? Virus do spread fast, and those in US who are made to pay some amount of Naira knows where it hurts. Transalting $700 to Naira amounts to some tidy sum of money. It is not a must that I should be a member of Nairaland anyway. You don't know who the members of this forum are. It will NOT be out of place if the Senior IT Manager of GTB or Shell is a member. If s\he sees this thread and alerts the company, who will get the kudo? Nobody will remmeber Misterman. Everybody will say I saw it on Nairaland. This kind of thing is really annoying. I hate people being rude, I have NEVER being rude to anybody. You can check all my posts; this is very easy to do: just search on Misterman. I never knew about this banning of a thing until afetr trying so much I just decided to search. The annoying thing is that there are some people I would love to share some ideas with and they will be waiting for my post.
Mavor: What a lousy idiotic site nairaland is turning into.
I tend to agree with what the poster said

Mynd_44: just click on your username and you will see why you were banned and when the ban will be over.

It is that simple

I clicked but I didn't see anything
