ProgrammingRe: Google Chrome Os And The Third World(why It Will Fail) by MisterMan(m): 1:55pm On Jul 20, 2009
Why it will fail? In Nigeria (Not talking about Africa, but I am sure what applies here applies allover), How many pple bought MS Office, MS Windows? How many of us are advertising on Google? The fact is: they (any serious software company, except maybe those Indian Banking Software Companies) will not factor Africa into their profit margin. If Google releases any software, they just won't have Africa at the back of their mind. That is the simple but painful truth
Nairaland GeneralNairaland.com And nairaland.+net. Any Connection? by MisterMan(op): 1:28pm On Jul 20, 2009
Recently I was trying out Bing (The new Search site by MS) - to compare with Google. In order to test it out, I typed Nairaland (out of nothing to really 'Bing': http://www.bing.com/search?q=nairaland&go=&form=QBLH&qs=n. One of the things that came out is nairaland.+net. I guess the two do not really have anything together. I quickly scanned thru. I guess it was a immitation. To comfirm further, I typed my username and password. Of course, it said it was wrong. I guess this has to do with the popularity that nairaland.com possess.

The only thing I found annoying is the too similarity between the two byline. For .net it is:
Welcome to nairaland.+net for Nigerians and Friends of Nigeria
It is too similar.
PoliticsRe: Discuss The Obama Speech In Ghana by MisterMan(m): 5:52pm On Jul 11, 2009
"No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or if police can be bought off by drug traffickers," Obama said. But is that not true. I remember a time when companies were checking out of Nigeria in droves, most especially during Abacha era. Why? Because of corruption and other things. Our champions and the richest men are those thieves pretending to be our leaders. He also said, and I quote: "No business wants to invest in a place where the government skims 20 percent off the top, or the head of the Port Authority is corrupt. No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of brutality and bribery". In all sincerity, what he said is the absolute truth. Customs Officers lobby to be posted to Seme boarders. Policemen bribe their superiors to be posted to check points, with the understanding of bringing returns. Do you know that people are now rushing to 'common' Ghana (permit the world. I am NOT putting down our dear brothers in Ghana.) I am saying that in relation to resources available to the two countries.

"That is not democracy, that is tyranny, even if occasionally you sprinkle an election in there," he said, "and now is the time for that style of governance to end." Do we have democracy in Nigeia?

Foreign AffairsObama To Africans: End Tyranny, Corruption by MisterMan(op): 4:12pm On Jul 11, 2009
America's first black president spoke with a bluntness that perhaps could only come from a member of Africa's extended family.

"No country is going to create wealth if its leaders exploit the economy to enrich themselves, or if police can be bought off by drug traffickers," he said

"No business wants to invest in a place where the government skims 20 percent off the top, or the head of the Port Authority is corrupt. No person wants to live in a society where the rule of law gives way to the rule of brutality and bribery.

"That is not democracy, that is tyranny, even if occasionally you sprinkle an election in there," he said, "and now is the time for that style of governance to end."

To me, he scores a hit. The problem with us is this coruption of a thing. For too long, we blame the west for our problems. This is one of the reason I never joined 'How Europe under-developed Africa' bus. He had Nigeria on his mind, or what do you think?
ComputersRe: Google Announces Own OS (Google Chrome OS) by MisterMan(op): 7:52am On Jul 11, 2009
That is the sensible thing to do anyway. As it is now, you cannot even get it RIGHT NOW even if you wanted to. It will NOT be available to manufacturing until 2nd Quarter of next year. Some people have been saying this is MS killer but I doubt it. From what I have read, it is going to be a lightweight OS (no unneccessary graphics), directly competing with Windows 7.

As it is, it is a straight fight between Google and MS. I bet MS will win. The good thing about this kind of competition is that we developrs and users win. No more buggy code, see what Firefox did to IE. Better products is the result of all these competitions. At the end of the day, who wins. It is neither MS, Google or any of the companies out there. It is we the users.
ComputersGoogle Announces Own OS (Google Chrome OS) by MisterMan(op): 1:39pm On Jul 10, 2009
Ouch. Just as Microsoft was poised to continue its netbook dominance with Windows 7, Google on Wednesday announced an OS of its own, Google Chrome OS, which will run on both x86 and ARM systems.

The emphasis of the OS is the same as what netbooks were originally designed for: light, Web-based computing. Obviously, Windows XP wasn't designed for such a scenario, but its relative light weight, low cost, and familiarity have made it a big hit with netbook buyers.

Google's new open-source OS will almost certainly beat XP and Windows 7 on cost, and will be lighter weight, but there's no telling how it will be to actually use. The relative dearth of Linux on netbooks also shows that people tend to prefer a more Windows-like environment. Google's blog entry about the OS says:

"The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the Web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work."

According to Google, the Chrome OS runs "within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel," and will eventually run on everything from netbooks to full desktop PCs. That's the key differentiator between the full-blown Chrome OS and Google's Android, which will start appearing in netbooks in the next few months (Google says there will be areas of overlap for the two operating systems, netbooks being the main one).

From a developer standpoint, the Chrome OS is good news, because there's basically no new platform to write for—any browser-based app will work with Chrome, just as it will in any browser on any OS.

It remains to be seen how the Chrome OS will affect companies like DeviceVM, which provides a quick-boot Linux-based environment that can be quickly loaded before Windows. DeviceVM, and rival Phoenix Technologies, provide access to the Web and multiple apps in seconds, far less time than Windows needs to load.

"The announcement of the Google OS further validates Splashtop's value proposition to consumers who are demanding instant-on, easy to use, secure computing," said Mark Lee, co-founder and chief executive of DeviceVM, in a statement provided to PCMag.com. "The market has been moving towards an instant-on model for several years now, and DeviceVM has already seen tremendous success in the space, with tens of millions of consumers already using Splashtop today, and 8 of the top 10 PC OEMs shipping Splashtop on devices this year.

Google says it is already talking with "multiple OEMs," and that we can expect Chrome netbooks to hit store shelves in the second half of 2010—yup, you've got a year to wait. Will you have Windows 7 on your netbook by then?

What is the insult there? Do you think the guy can handle a mouse? The DHTML you think may not be the same DHTML he is talking about. There are many slangs around. That picture comes from a thread: Ugly Britain or something like that. I have never been to Britain, but I know their economy is not that bad that a programmer cannot earn a decent living. Their Universities are also top-rated that they produce competent programmers.

I am definitely interested in your service. However, I need more information. This is what I copied from the website (emphasis mine):
Either as an individual developer, a team developer or a software company, use your PayXpress account to log into this section and access your developer page where you can check on sales of your already listed softwares or simply list new ones.

Put yourself in the position of a developer who is NOT in any way assopciated with the service. Does it give you much information to want to use that service? As soon as you click on the hyperlink, it goes to the sign-up page. Tell me how does it work. What is going to be your own cut, I mean the rate. Spill out the whole bean. However, dont expect too much from the Nigerian programmers here. Most don't have working demos. If you put out enough info, pple like kpac with his banking application and a few other guys may be interested.

I hope and I pray that you will succeed in this venture. Cheers

This guy is one of the few programmers/developers that say sensible things always. In fact, he is one of the few I take serious. This post attests to that. Please keep up the good job. While posting a reply, I just decided to take a trip to the site b4 I say senceless things. I have not been able to go thru it carefully because I am short of time (will go back later) There are some questions I want to ask:

1. How much does it cost?
2. How do I get this your pay express account?

There has been an idea that has been on my mind which I was hoping to bring on board. This has to do with helping users making purchase decisions. In saner countries, you have things like Best Buy Award, Editors' Choice etc. This has the effect of making users buy intelligently because of recommendations. This can be started in Nigeria. here on Nairaland, we can have something like MVP or Most Valauable Program/package or something like Best of Breed. On your website, I see that you have your products as Top Selling. This is the kind of thing I am talking about. However, if you want to be taken serious, you shouldn't have listed your products as Top Selling. We want to help make your site a definitive site for unbiased place for information on buying software. If it succeeds, we developers can channel our efforts into developing our greatest and best, knowing that people take you serious when they need packages.

If you succeed (I pray that you do, you are one hell of a fine dude, and have something upstair, it rubs on us as well. So I won't have to bang my head about marketing my wares when I know there is a place where users go for such a thing. Everybody wins. I win because I spend little on advertising and I am able to develop faster and better. The user is a winner because they buy best of breed and you win because more traffic and more money flows into your pocket.

If you want to list your packages (naturally you will want to), let us try and find a way which makes it transparent and honest.

I will still go back there and there and see more stuffs.

You are my man. Keep up the good job.

Some accept and some do not. You just have to try it. My first experience was with IXWebhosting.com. They rejected it. I tried it with another web host. They accepted it after a little delay, which I think was because they were cross-checking or what evev. Take a look at the following:

The bottom line is that you need to try it out. As I said, I have one issued by Intercontinental Bank. Some rejected it while others accepted it. My candid opinion is: try it out.

What kind of question is this? You mean programming language? If that is your question, learn C#. I can c that a lot of folks around Nairaland are coding in VB.NET. That is a good language too. In fact, there is hardly anything that you can do in C# that cannot be done in VB. In fact, one of the stated goals of Microsoft is to bring the two of them to parity and end the 'sibling-rivalry' btw them

Please don't take me serious. I don't really know. This is the chicken-egg problem. Nobody will really know what the Original language was. Most xtians will tell you it is Hebrew because they are xtians. Most muslims will tell you it is Arabic because they are muslims. Why don't you look for a more logical project to work on. No matter how long or far you Google or search, NOBODY, and I repeat NOBODY can tell you what the original language is.

Come to think about it, nobody was there now that heard the first language. As somebody who is very intelligent has pointed out, most people will tell you their answer based on the their 'created' God.

I quite understand what yall have said, intentions also play a major role in this matter.
Moreover, what is needed in most situations is wisdom coupled with understanding. I too have been somewhat dishonest b4, and I knew it in my heart that I was not telling the truth even when I intended not to do so.

Thanks man. It is hard NOT to feel offended. Look at this statement critically: By the way, it is not what you taught your children that they responds to, but they are more influenced by subconscious stuff and by other things inside your own very heart. What does the bold statement mean? A man without integrity or truth. You showed some maturity.

Taken:
God Forbid that I should experience such events. Moreover, I seem to have noticed that I will stand up for human rights back in those days while in high school.
And will still do that today. In most cases, if someone is in danger and I am in the position to stand up and defend such, I will readily do so - even if it involves close contact battle.
But to answer you question above, I may choose not to answer their question or I might even appear foolish in their sight, and there are other wise ways to answer their question beside falsifying any information. The truth still stands tall!
God forbid. I hope and pray that it never happened to you (to to any one else for that matter. We are just discussing 'what if?' so at to bring out some points. And for your comment about helping somebody in danger is quite different from what we are saying. They have nothing in common if i may add. The English word for that is chivalry. Being chilvarous is completely different from honesty. I am even more stumped by your introduction of Human Rights.

I have noticed a lot of people emphasising I will own up if I did something. I tell you, a lot of people will not do what they cannot own up to. When we talk about honesty here, a lot of people quickly think in terms of not being dubious. To me there is more to it than that. A very good case is that of a poster who posted about a man and his wife turning up against the man's friend simply because he was 'honest'. That showed that it happened before and it can happen again. I am sure if a similar situation arises again, the man will think twice before opening his mouth wide.

@Zaragoza
Im not a saint. Far from it. If im not able to defend or own up to somethin i did, i just dont do it. Its easy as pie really. undecided
The mistake most people are making is that they are personalising some of these issues. Nobody is actually talking about whay YOU did od dis NOT do. We are NOT saying would you be able to defend what you did. With this thread, we are talking about how would you react to what SOMEBODY else did. It has nothing with YOU in particular. Some other people I guess, got it wrong because of the word: Honesty. Zaragoza, perhaps should have re-phare it to have diplomacy instead. This is the reason (most likely) why Taken said and I quote "By the way, it is not what you taught your children that they responds to, but they are more influenced by subconscious stuff and by other things inside your own very heart.
Until you and I are ready to change, we should altogether forget about Nigeria becoming a better nation.
". I teach my children all the good stuff in life: Honesty, respect, hard-work. These are virtues that I have inculcated over the years. If I am NOT honest, there is no way I can teach my children that. I spanked them if they are not truthful. At times I get insulted by some of these threads. What the hell does he mean when he said "but they are more influenced by subconscious stuff and by other things inside your own very heart", implying that at heart I am dishonest?

I will tell you something: This thread is more than one some people think it is. It has to do with one's belief, and to some extent, culture. Zaragoza simply use a cheating man. What if I have a best friend who has a cheating wife. Will I confirm it if he asks me? Of course I will. I won't even wait for him to ask me before telling him.

Before some people get things wrong let me say this: my mother is well stricken in years and my dad is late. Assuming my mother is cheating on my father, will I confirm to my father if he suspected and he asked me? Of course yes. I will let him know the moment I got to know about it. What will I do if my father cheats on my mother? Depends. Depends on so may factors. My brother-in-law once cheated on my sister and I got to know. Thankfully, my sister was not aware of it. If she was aware and she asked me, my reaction (confirmation) would depend on the circumstance. If it were my brother that was being cheated on by his wife and I got to know. Do you think I won't tell my brother if I got to know? Of course, I would. Some of these things depend on so many things. I don't expect an American or European to understand my actions, just as most likely I wont be able to understand their own reaction. Really, as I said the other time, it really is not about honesty as much as diplomacy, belief and culture. I tell you, I will NEVER embezzle money neither take things that do not belong to me. Those people that I deal with in business know the kind of person I am. For some other people to start posting implying that I am dishonest is taking things too far
RomanceRe: Is Honesty Always The Best Policy? by MisterMan(m): 10:02am On Jan 22, 2009
I love this kind of thought-provoking threads. Is honesty ALWAYS the best policy? I have kids and I do tell them all the time that they should tell the truths always. Infact, when they do something wrong and they own up or tell the truth, they don’t get spanked and I go out of my way to let them know they were not punished because they spoke the truth. But I tell you kids’ world is different from real world. To the kids, the color is either white or black. But in the real world, there are shades of gray. I will never be in and tell my kids to say that daddy is out.

To the kids, I will tell them that honesty is the best policy. They don’t know the nuances and complexities of the world. They are too innocent to understand. But to the adults, I will tell you that honesty is NOT always the best policy. If you tell the truth so save situation or NOT to worsen situation (irreparable damage anyway), I will concur.

A very good situation is the scenario painted above by the author of this thread. I can lie to save the marriage (think about the consequences; the innocent children involved). To me, the important point is the motive behind the lie.

Have you forgotten the ‘No, she is my sister’ saga of our revered Abraham and Isaac his son? Some people will counter that in the case of AB, he did not lie but told half truth. But then, he imlied lied becos he DECEIVED the king into believing that Sarah was NOT his wife. Apostle Peter in which the church was built lied not only once or twice but three good times. He still went ahead to become chief of the apostles.

Will I lie to save my marriage or my friend’s marriage? Yes. Now, let us consider the following: Assuming my best friend’s fiancée is SS or AS and told my friend the fact. Now, let’s assume my friend is SS or AS and lied that he is AA. Will I lie that he is AA if I were asked so that he can get get married to the person he loved? No. Think about the future regrets, the heart breaks and the innocent lives that will suffer. Now assuming the girl is my blood sister and she is in ‘quarter to’, very despereate to get married. Will I lie so that she can fulfill her heart’s desires? Of course not. I simply won’t cover her up.

Assuming there is a religious riots in the North and there is reprisal attacks here in the south. It happens that my neigbour, who is a Muslim from Kano happens to run into my house for protection, and is being hunted down. If I were asked for her whereabouts. You should guess what I will say: “Oloriburuku Olosi ti gba ibi salo”, meaning ‘The stupid and irresponsible man ran away taking this route’ and meanwhile he is safely tucked away in my house. In this case, would I still insist that honesty is ALWAYS the best policy? In this case, I guess it is ok to lie.

Assuming I am in Bauchi and there is once again religious riots I am surrounded my hoodlums wielding petrol, clubs, machete and dagger. If I were asked if I am a Christian or muslim. Of course, I will say I am a muslim. Am I being a coward? No. Am I truthful? Of course not. I am being wise. Joy to the wise. Joy to me. I refuse to be foolish.

When is the next greatest and best OS of yours coming out? I will be interested in buying one. You make some sensible suggestions this time out. We Nigerian programmers have to do something achievable. It is not impossible to create virtual company in which we can create software. With Soludo's vision of former community banks, I think that is an area where we Nigerian programmers can come in. They don't have enough financial muscle to go to India for their purchase.

I think the media can also assist. Serious Magazines and newspapers can always test Nigerian developed packages and award Best Buy / Editors' choice award as it is done in overseas. This will instill some meature of confidence in the buyers. Nothing stops us from producing accounting packages and being tested by ICAN and ANAN. You can be sure if ICAN can award best buy award, companies like Zinox will want to bundle this on their systems. Everybody will benefit. But to start writing another OS that will compete will Windows. Forget it. It is not 'do-able'. You have some nice ideas now.

They have learnt that they can't make all the softwares themselves! Or think again about their new campaign "Windows Vs Walls". I am just using this to say that it is time we Nigerian Software Developers take the bulls by the horns and start creating engaging and interactive softwares. Who knows the time of the mouse, keyboard or touch screen might be over! Who would make the next interactive tool? Nigerian Software Developers, lets do this!!!!!! wink
What are your suggestions? But please say something reasonable and don't give me this crap about we Nigerian developers beating Microsoft in software development. Or are your not the guy who was 'recruiting software army'? huh shocked. That post was one of the most stupid thread (my opinion please. I don't mean to be disrespectful. I am sorry if you feel insulted). Here, I am asking for your valued opinion. What do you think is the way forward? See what Indians are doing? Can we replicate that?
