A Christian numerologist, David Meade has claimed that the world would end on Saturday, September 23rd when a planet will collide with Earth. Picking verses from the Christian Bible book of Luke 21:25-26, Meade attributes the recent natural disasters around the world as signs of the impending apocalypse. But NASA has debunked that claim as a ‘hoax’ siting several other conspiracy theories about the apocalypse, the most recent being the 2012 ‘prediction’... UK scientists find chance of high-grade prostate cancer rises by 21% with every 10cm increment in height Tall men are at greater risk of contracting aggressive prostate cancer and of dying from the disease, the findings of a large study suggest. British scientists found that every 10cm increment in height increased the chance of developing high-grade prostate cancer by 21% and the risk of death from the disease by 17%. They also found that obesity raised the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. The lead researcher, Dr Aurora Pérez-Cornago from Oxford University, said: “The finding of high risk in taller men may provide insights into the mechanisms underlying prostate cancer development – for example, related to early nutrition and growth. “We also found that a healthy body weight is associated with a reduced risk of high-grade prostate cancer and death from prostate cancer years later.” The study, published in BMC Medicine on Thursday, found that increased height was not associated with overall risk of contracting prostate cancer, but only with the aggressive forms of the disease. Total prostate cancer risk was found to be related to body mass index and waist circumference, but the latter is considered a better proxy for obesity as muscular people can have a high BMI. Every extra 10cm on the waistline was associated with a 13% greater likelihood of having high-grade prostate cancer and an 18% bigger risk of dying from the disease. Obesity has been linked to 11 common cancers, but the researchers believe their findings on weight could be – at least partially – a result of detection issues. They say obese men may be less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, because they have lower concentrations of prostate-specific antigens, are less likely to undergo a biopsy and tend to have larger prostates, making detection more difficult. A reduced likelihood of early detection and treatment might lead to greater incidence of aggressive disease and higher mortality, the researchers suggest. The analysis drew from data on 141,896 men, nearly all of whom were white, in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. After an average of 13.9 years of follow-up, there were 7,024 cases of prostate cancer, including 726 high-grade cases and 934 deaths from the disease. Dr Matthew Hobbs, deputy director of research at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “It is certainly interesting that, according to this research, certain physical characteristics appear to increase a man’s likelihood of developing aggressive prostate cancer, as it might provide pointers to help uncover certain genetic markers and early developmental processes which hold significance in terms of causing the disease to develop. “It also underlines once again the importance of living a healthy lifestyle to help defend against a host of diseases, including prostate cancer.” However, Hobbs stressed that the disease could affect men of all shapes and sizes. In 2014, there were 46,960 new cases of prostate cancer and 11,287 deaths from the disease in the UK, according to Cancer Research UK. Dr Jasmine Just, the charity’s health information officer, said maintaining a healthy weight could help men reduce the risk of contracting a number of different cancers, but that the link between obesity and aggressive prostate cancer was still unclear. “Further studies are also needed to understand if men who are overweight or obese might be at a higher risk of dying from prostate cancer and, if so, why,” she added. The Nollywood movie industry has evolved over the years to be an industry that can now boldly says it is competing with its American counterpart ‘Hollywood’. Movie making in the past simply involved hitting a particular location after putting a story together, all it involved basically was production and sales. However, today, movie making goes way beyond production, marketing and sales. It involves a whole lot of process which includes but is not limited to movie premieres! While the English sector of the industry has been adhering to the motive of a premiere not removing the essential glitz of the red carpet, we have realized that the same cannot be said for the Yoruba sector. Movie premieres in the Yoruba sector of the industry seem more like a ceremony, where there are live bands, dignitaries on the high table, and in many cases “Aso Ebi” (Uniforms), meanwhile, the movie itself doesn’t get a mention except when the ‘launching’ starts! Movie Premieres in the Nollywood industry is attached to a lot of glitz and glamour. The essential reason for a movie premiere is to show a new movie in preparation for it’s release either for sales or to the cinema. Just last weekend, there were two different premieres in the industry, Alter Ego by Omotola Jalade and Owo Naira Bet by Yoruba producer Lizzy Anjorin. Both movies were premiered on the same day at different venues and we can as well use them as the medium for this article. Alter Ego and Owo Naira Bet were premiered but only one movie was shown to the guests. Movie watchers have said that Yoruba premieres can as well be called a ‘launch’ and not a premiere. It is very peculiar with Yoruba premieres to have a live band and ‘dance dance dance’ section in the program of events, while the major peculiar thing with English premieres is the red carpet and the after party. Judging by so many premieres that have taken place in the industry, it is safe to say that Yoruba producers launch their movies not premiere. http://www.fab.ng/2017/07/see-difference-yoruba-movie-premiere-english-movie-premiere/

The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Monday upgraded the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, into Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUST). The Executive Secretary, NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, officially announced the take-off of the university in Abuja at the formal presentation of the school’s recognition letter to Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun. Rasheed said that the university would be recognised as the 45th State University in the country. According to him, the take-off of the university will mean that Ogun State will now have three state universities. “Ogun state is the intellectual capital of black Africa. “From the NUC records, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Tai Solarin University of Education are two state universities but the addition of the University of Science and Technology will make it three. “What this shows is that the governor is really doing well as he has the education of the state at heart. “Beginning from July 3, 2017, the Polytechnic has now been recognised as the 45th state university in Nigeria.” Rasheed also noted that the NUC did not just create the university for access alone but the integrity and sanctity of the degree in Nigeria university. He said an average graduate of Nigerian university with a very good average degree earned (2-2) in a good university in Nigeria and qualifies for any university in the world performs better. “Our qualities are of international standard, we have high standard in the quality of education in Nigeria. “We are still working to review our curriculum to make it more competitive and ensure that it is of international best standards to solve our problems. “We want to graduates students who are familiar with our culture, tradition, history, science; and we want those graduates to be citizens of the world who can fit in anywhere. “We want to assure Nigerians that the quality of our degree is quite okay and we are working to improve on it,” he said. He, however, called on other governors to take a cue from Ogun state governor and advance the course of the university system in the country. Gov. Ibikunle Amosun in his response said for any nation to get it right, the tertiary institutions must do well. Amosun said the upgrade of the Polytechnic to a university was done through the enabling law of the Ogun State House of Assembly. He added that the university would be a reference point as the government of the state was committed to leave no stone unturned to take the university to its greater height. He added that certain funds had been created for the funding of the university. “As we are upgrading the Polytechnic to a University, we are earlier in Kaduna today to establish a new Polytechnic because we don’t want the Polytechnic to die like that, so we are relocating the Polytechnic to Ipokia area of the state. “The university of science and technology will now be in Abeokuta. The governor said a technical committee had been brainstorming in the last six years on the way forward to bring this to fruition. He added that the university would also help to develop the human capital that would improve the industrial hub of the state. He, however, promised to provide science and technology solution to areas in health, security and environmental challenges bedeviling the country. The trend of African presidents traveling out of their countries for treatment abroad has been condemned since it speaks volumes about the state of healthcare facilities and the medical systems in their home countries. Some presidents have become known for doing this on regular basis. Below is a compiled list of some of them: 1. President Muhammadu Buhari President Buhari spent seven weeks in the UK between January and March receiving medical care for an undisclosed ailment, and returned there in May for further treatment. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, 60, has been running the country in his absence as Acting President. 2. Jose Eduardo Dos Santos Angola President, Dos Santos, who is 74, has held power since 1979, making him Africa’s second-longest serving leader after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. He’s spent most of this month in Spain on a private visit that Foreign Minister Georges Chikoti confirmed was taken for medical reasons, before returning to Angola on Monday. 3. President Robert Mugabe Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe is 93 years old and has held power since 1980. He is one the world’s oldest serving rulers who have refused to hand over power. Mugabe and his aides have said he’s as “fit as a fiddle,” but he’s visibly frail and has traveled frequently to Singapore to undergo medical treatment. The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has claimed that Lagos State is not part of Yoruba land. Akiolu’s statement is coming barely a week after he publicly humiliated the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi at an event. In a statement from Akiolu’s palace, the monarch traced the historical background of the state and why it should not be regarded as part of Yoruba land. The statement reads: “Coming from the palace, with what I was told by my late paternal grandmother who is a descendant of Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi and also reading from factual Historical books, let me share this Knowledge with you all on Eko/Lagos. “Modern day Lagos was founded by Prince Ado, the son of the Oba of Benin, Prince Ado was the first Oba of Lagos, the son of the Bini King, Prince Ado, named the town Eko until the Portuguese explorer Ruy de Segueira changed the Maritime town to Lagos, which at that time from 1942 was Portuguese expedition center down the African Coast. “It was a major centre of the slave trade until 1851. Lagos was annexed by Britain via the Lagos treaty of cession in 1861, ending the consular period and starting the British Colonial Period. The remainder of modern day Nigeria was seized in 1886 when the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established in 1914 Lagos was declared its capital due to the struggle of the Bini King. “Lagos experienced growth prior to the British Colonial rule and even more rapid growth during the Colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 70s, continued through the 80s and 90s till date. Thanks to the Awori’s, Bini’s, Yoruba’s, migrants across the nation and world at large, as no particular group of people can take the glory alone. “Lagos is made up of Lagoons and creeks. The Lagos lagoon, Lagos Harbour, five cowne creeks, Ebute-Metta creeks, Porto-Novo creeks, New canal, Badagry creeks, Kuramo waters and Light house creeks.” Source: http://www.fab.ng/2017/05/lagos-not-part-yorubaland-oba-akiolu/
