All of this argument because of me, please oo @ monsieurcoder, I made my findings before considering a Msc program in computational linguistics..

Thank you@ kolping I will check right away. God bless you sir

Sighs. Don't mind me. I should not have been arguing with someone whose greatest acheivement is getting an American Visa.

Here is what I am trying to say in essence.

Computational Linguistic is Computer Science discipline not a Linguistic discipline. That does not mean you cannot do it with your linguistic degree. No! I am trying to say moving from Linguistic to Computational science you will be switching fields. Emphasis on switching. At the end of the program you would be a Computer scientist (with specialisation in computational linguistic) This would require to take a lot of solid computer science background courses before you can proceed to computational linguistic as a specialisation. Not a big deal, people switch fields everyday. I am stressing on it because for most people, moving from Linguistic to Computer Science is a huge paradigm shift and they are unable to cope--I know someone who took a similar path but dropped out of the program. This does not mean you can't. Hell No! People do it everyday.

In the formal languages of computer science and linguistics, the Chomsky hierarchy is a containment hierarchy of classes of formal grammars. This hierarchy of grammars was described by Noam Chomsky. Guess what? Noam Chomsky is a linguist and he laid the bedrock for Formal Language which is the foundation of computational linguistic. So yes! You can.

If you want to have an idea of Formal language as it used in Computational linguistic, there is a course online offered by Jeff Ullman, a professor at Stanford, you can find it here https://online.stanford.edu/courses/soe-ycsautomata-automata-theory I seriously suggest you take a look at the course. It would give you a glimpse of what you would be doing and it is free. I think it is also on coursera. Took the class sometime ago, it is really good.

I really hope I am clearer now.

You simply went off when you said computational linguistics is done by computer scientists not linguists. and I simply corrected you and you have since then been going off point Mr man stay on track

it's an area which uses linguistics rules to model natural language to be processed by software this mean you don't need to have a background in CS though it would be an added advantage to be able to program in a couple higher level language, let say Java

grin grin grin grin

Computational linguistics is the scientific and engineering discipline concerned with understanding written and spoken language from a computational perspective, and building artifacts that usefully process and produce language, either in bulk or in a dialogue setting.
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/computational-linguistics/

When did Linguistic become a Science and Engineering discipline?

You said "it's an area which uses linguistics rules to model natural language to be processed by software"

Where did you get this definition from? grin

You said "you don't need to have a background in CS though it would be an added advantage"

Where did you also get this from? grin grin grin

Stop fooling yourself. If it's difficult for you to understand English then let me explain it to you like a kindergarten teacher: When I said she had her masters in computational linguistics without background in CS I mean prior to her admission she never did a computer science course. You argue so blindly and you have never even been to the States before, why are some Nigerians like this?

grin grin grin grin grin grin

Is that all you have got?

computational linguistics courses often don't require any computer science background at all.

So you made this statement but you don't know a single school in America and you are there live grin grin grin

Someone that has been to America does not know that when you are switching fields you are always going to spend your first year taking Background and preliminary courses before proceeding to your Masters grin grin grin

I am done with you sha. You have nothing offer. Next time look before you leap.

This is a statement you made.

Infact My fiancée was a linguist graduate and she didn't do any computer science course before she started her Msc in computational linguistics. computational linguistics courses often don't require any computer science background at all.

Back it up or you are a bloody liar. Name one school that does computational linguistic without Computer Science background. I am waiting for you o.

Oga what does that bolded statement mean ?

It means that you MUST have a computer science background before you do Computational Linguistics. Whether you take CS courses before or during your M.S. is irrelevant. People change fields everyday.

Show me ANY school that does MS in Computation Linguistic without Background in CS. I am waiting.

Infact My fiancée was a linguist graduate and she didn't do any computer science course before she started her Msc in computational linguistics. computational linguistics courses often don't require any computer science background at all.

Where did I say you can't do Ms in in computational linguistics with a BS in linguistic?

My Post: Computational Linguistics is a Computer Science discipline not a Linguist discipline. It takes concepts from linguistic but is done by computer scientists not linguists.

Your Post: This is not true.

Oga you are being corrected but you remain inexorable. You can't generalize that statement it depends on how the school department set it up. Now tell me what Is computational linguistics? @ miracleadeyeye you can contact the graduate school of Brandeis university I believe they offer funding opportunities in computational linguistics and your BA degree in linguistics is just fine for MSc in computational linguistics

The Brandeis MA Program in Computational Linguistics is a specialized degree offered by and housed in the Department of Computer Science.

The First Year

All first-year students take LING 131: Programming for Linguistics in the Fall of the first year, and COSI 114: Fundamentals of Computational Linguistics in the Spring. Additional courses for the year are chosen by each student in consultation with the computational linguistics advising faculty, with the final schedule tailored to individual student needs and academic interests.

The goal is for all students to emerge from the first year with:

a strong foundation in the basics of both computer science and formal linguistics
facility and comfort with the fundamental techniques, goals, and methodology of computational linguistics, natural language processing, and corpus linguistics.

Any additional room in the first-year schedule is devoted to developing and strengthening the student's computer programming abilities, along with taking other computer science or linguistics electives of interest to the particular student.

Computer Science Background Courses

COSI 11 Programming in Java and C
COSI 12 Advanced Programming Techniques
COSI 21a Data Structures and the Fundamentals of Computing (required, but can be taken in the second year)
COSI 21b Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (recommended)
LING 160 Mathematical Methods in Linguistics

Hello house,

I'm a newbie I stumble upon this page while searching for ways to get funding for my msc program in the US. I have been trying to get first hand info on how to get funding but no success yet, I also tried to lookup info on this page that will be related to my discipline but I can't seem to find anything related to "Linguistics" I am considering a MSc program in computational linguistics . Please Anybody, I will to know what GRE score would be sufficient enough to fund a MSc program in Computational linguistics and considering the fact that I'm not a maths oriented student. (The GRE quantitative seems to be more easier for the mathematics oriented students)...

I'm presently in my final semester in a university here in Nigeria and my present undergraduate GPA is 4.3

Please anybody

Please I am in a dilemma here and I need your advice especially those who have gone through the application process before

I am a prospective Computer Science Fall 2019 applicant. Two of my papers have been accepted to an IEEE conference [No. 1 publisher in my field]. But the registration fees and expenses to attend the conference will set me back around 150k. Do you guys think it is worth the cost?

EDIT: To add, conference is in India so I will not be attending to reduce cost. Someone else will go on my behalf [an indian]. Also, I am on a very small budget. No sponsorship whatsoever, just personal savings

Please stick to your initial title. It will give your work more attention. "Seeking Europe" is too generic. There is nothing special about seeking Europe. What makes your story special is How you did so: Do well to highlight that.

Scimago is just a research group that takes most of its information from scopus to rank some journals. It's not an indexing database or coverage.

Take note: you don't need to pay kobo for any quality publications in standard journal provided you are not choosing open access (not necessary).

To find quality journals, kindly check major publishers like Elservier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, British societies, IOP, IEEE etc. Just type any of above on google, then search for their journals you will find quality journals.

To check the index of any journals kindly visit the Master Journal List under CLARIVATE ANALYTICS and to check their Quartiles (Q1-Q4), visit web of science.

Thank you. I really appreciate the work you are doing here.

International Journal of Computer Science Issues
Not a good journal for now. Cannot be found in WEB OF SCIENCE (WOS). No Impact factor. Not indexed/abstracted in respected and acceptable international database such as SCI, SCI-e no part of emerging source science, Not in Scopus. Charges Publication Fee of 190USD.

#Note: That journal is not good or standard and also charges money to publish grin...Above suggested Journals in Computer Science are well respected and does not charge KOBO to publish.

Thanks for taking your time to write this up for me. Really appreciated.

[s]I went through their website and did not see anything on publication fee. Where did you see that? I must have missed it.[/s] Never mind, seen it.

I also saw the journal indexed here http://www.scimagojr.com/journalsearch.php?q=21100469675&tip=sid&clean=0 so I thought it was a good journal. Is scimagojr.com not a good place to find indexed journals? Sorry for my numerous questions, I am embarking on this without any supervision or guidance from anyone.

Did you ask what exactly makes PhD program in Federal universities in Nigeria slower or lengthy? If the major reasons are known, may be before you start anywhere in Nigeria you can first tackle such issues.

I did not study in Nigeria but I have co-supervised some master and Phd students with some Nigerian professors.

What I realized (personal observation),is that majority of those supervisors lack research capabilities, less experience with research formulations (they can appear experience), creativity is low, mostly think inside the box, equipments and laziness.

But they blame it on ASUU, pastors, Imams, Fulani herdsmen, IPOB, native doctors.

When I saw your previous post on Lecturers in Nigeria publishing in unknown venues and their excuse being "they thought publishing in Top Journals and Conferences would be expensive" I just LOLed and liked your post grin. I wanted to say something but I thought since you didn't school in Nigeria, you would be totally clueless and naive about of how things worked here but with this your post I can infer you have an idea albeit a nascent one.

Those Lecturers that gave "ignorance" as an excuse are just full of shit. They knew, I am 100% sure of that. But since Universities in Nigeria don't care where you publish, as long as you "publish", they don't care. They know how rigorous it is to publish in the likes of IEEE Xplore, Elsevier, A.C.M., T. and F. and so on so they don't bother; Why should they? When they can submit their bullshit work to an unknown journal and still get same promotion? The system is a vicious cycle of mediocrity. They will be roaming about answering "Prof" and "Doctor" with ego's bigger than Mount Everest, feeling like gods, frustrating students, self acclaimed "experts" in their field, who dare question these Supreme Beings here?

You need to take a look at their Ph.D thesis, you will literally puke. This is not the first time I am hearing a story of how they applied for lecturing positions abroad and were bounced. Other stories were very similar to yours. Those that have up to 2 to 4 publications in SCI, SCI-e, SSCI are the very brilliant ones. You need to meet the others.

Jobs/Vacancies / My Email Correspondence With A GNLD Interviewer by MonsieurCoder: 4:52pm On Aug 04, 2017
Yesterday, I got an email about a supposed job interview. I recently applied for about 2 jobs so it didn’t really come as a surprise. I perused the email and immediately sensed something was off. I am in an esoteric field so interview invites in my field are usually more specific and not generic like this.

First red flag, they didn’t state the position I was applying for, which is unlike any interview invite I have ever received. Second red flag, they were too many damn typos for an email coming from a supposedly “Human Capital Management team”. I am usually quite picky about jobs I apply for so this was just off. Third red flag, No company name. Probably not unusual, but since I usually applied directly to companies via their official email addresses, this was very suspicious and to make it worse, email came from a *gmail.com address and not *companyname.com or *recruitername.com as I would expect.

First thing that came to my mind, GNLD!. This people have found me o! I hear a lot of these stories on Nairaland and never thought it would get to me one day. So out of curiosity I decided to search the venue of the interview online.

Boom! I was right. I thought of ignoring the mail, I actually did for a while. I then thought of the numerous desperate job seekers out there who would waste their little funds and time going for this interview without doing little investigation like I did. I am not even in Lagos—a lot of job seekers might reside outside Lagos state and would spend a lot of money attending this fraudulent job interview.
I was really pissed because the email had gotten my hopes high and I decided to make them feel my pain and my emotions got the better of me.

I replied.

I didn’t even expect a reply, but to my surprise, they did reply me.

Ouch! It seems like I hit a nerve. Lol.

I replied

I aplogise for the unsavoury messages. I was just pissed.
