Marco Verratti may be available. He wouldn't be my 1st option, but a midfielder with strong technical qualities, but most importantly plays with intelligence, so rare to see that in 20 year old. Not exactly the steel, energy and burst some may want, but if some were happy with us supposedly signing Thiago, then Verratti is even better suited. Would be a natural partner or replacement for Carrick in terms of setting the tempo from midfield. PSG spending spree's, his miniscule wages and possible lack of playing time may push him out. Though Napoli would be in pole position considering they long registered interest and new found cash. We might be smart to make a move if things continue souring.

@ Dademola. Best performing over the season, where did I say best gk? Where did I say he wasn't still a work in progress? Some were on the list undeservedly abi, okay if DDG was undeserved make your case for who should have been with facts not opinion. This is what Elampiro failed to do when we had this debate at the end of last season, instead resorting to posting hit pieces written by pundits with a vendetta. How is Hart established, because he has English blood? The same way Sczeny was established until he fell apart last season.

@ Coogar. I have resolved never to argue with any DDG doubters again. Most of them have formed their opinions already and will dismiss all positives and exaggerate, if not invent weaknesses just to keep finding fault and arguing. I can understand those whom are just tough critics or those who opposed the idea of bring in a young developing goalie (e.g Starboard), but when they start using Hart and others to try and run him down I just don't bother. I taught Begovic was all that, doesn't look like anyone is breaking down Stoke's door to get him.

Elampiro is okay unless the issue becomes Rooney and/or DDG. When you have to be running down Kagawa, RVP even CR7 and Messi just to raise Rooney, you have lost objectivity. When you are still running down a goalie, who was acknowledge by his colleagues as the best performing over the season and then claiming a Joe Hart, who dropped more jaw dropping clangers last season than DDG has throughout his time in England is better and more reliable, who have lost objectivity.

Its all good, most posters here have certain players they will strenuously defend and others they are more harsh towards.

40m for one guy who won't even solve all our midfield issues. If Barca agree, this signing will turn out like Veron, just that this time it will damage us going forward. Unlike Veron's which didn't hurt because we already had a loaded central midfield before adding him.

it would be foolish of barca to let BOTH thiago and fabregas go in the same transfer window,i really don't see it happening.

This is why I said earlier that it looks like Woodward and Moyes are still finding their feet on transfers, which is disappointing when one considers one of the main selling points of Moyes was how smooth a transition it would be and continuity. Typically when we identify a player, we move in quickly and not waste unnecessary time. This summer though its clear we are missing the prompt manner of David Gill and certainty of SAF. Hopefully we still get the quality we need, but not at stupid fees. God knows how much we would have ended up paying for the likes of Kagawa, Hernandez, Zaha, Smalling e.t.c if we had this type of approach when signing them.

unless rooney puts in an official transfer request, goes on strike and a foreign club come in with a strong offer, he will not be sold. he can pull a Mikel and we still won't sell to Chelsea unless for mad money (50m+). just like dortmund are doing with lewandoski and we have done in the past with heinze and mikel, we will not be forced to sell a player to a local rival regardless of inconvenience or loss we may suffer, unless it suits us and we over compensated.

I certainly don't or didn't expect him to walk into the side, but after 2 seasons he has barely made any in roads to starting on even a regular basis. yet we should spend 35+m after Barca spent 29m to get him.

remember we still have financial constraints on us, in the form of debts and accompanying interest. we aren't bayern (cash rich & debt free) or madrid (who can use political influence to get a tax write off or refund).

what are these too nice excuses. fact is that dillish likes to tease and also likes to flirt. it doesn't make her a bad person or justify nando's lecherous conduct or anybody else for that matter. but lets not deny or whitewash what is clearly apparent either. just like some people are introverts and others extroverts, while some are open and others guarded. dillish has a propensity for flirtation and teasing. she has said so numerous times herself and that steven her bf knows she likes to flirt. this isn't just a matter of being too nice, the girl enjoys flirtation and it is not a crime. even melvin warned her about her propensity for it when she was screaming "I like bassey" before he came to diamonds but then refused to allow her play her games with him. we all have different character traits and one of dillish's traits is that she is a natural at flirting and enjoys it. that most certainly doesn't make her a bad person.

^ I disagree. xavi, iniesta busquet are worth that. vidal, bastien, martinez, yaya are worth that. players whom are starters, major contributors at club and/or national level are worth that. if fabregas was worth that and more he would have made further in roads to starting eleven at his natural position.

I am with coogar in opposing this signing, if this costs anything north of 30m. I would rather get 2 reasonable central midfielders, one with high developmental upside, than pay a massive premium on a player who doesn't solve all our midfield problems.

that barca were willing to pay that is their own damned business. so far he has not justified the sum they spent, so it is not out of place to wonder if he is worth such an outlay and whether it is wise to pay a similar sum.
if a player is signed for 30m and his subsequent performance doesn't justify the fee, it is common sense that any purchasing club will evaluate the wisdom of paying a similar fee, or even more.

afrodoc: paulinho just moved to spurs and dembele n cabaye are both CM types so i dont think getting both would be a good option.dont think cabaye is of the quakity we want and i dont see spurs selling dembele for less than crazy money.
we need a CM with some dynamism,skill,passing and vision e.g fabregas,MODRIC etc and a DM who is a useful passer of the ball e.g ......?

I didn't mean those players specifically. I mean similar type of signings. Spurs picked up Sigurdsson, Paulinho & Dembele on the cheap after they had shown potential at other levels, rather than blowing the huge some they wanted to on Coutinho and others they were chasing at the time.

Rather than plunking down close to £40m on a player that doesn't even fixed all our problems and has recently raised questionmarks about his ability to function at mega clubs where expectation is high. Why not spend £15-18m on a Cabaye type and then pick up another decent talented central midfielder who has reasonable potential e.g Kondogbia, Mendy, Fer e.t.c.

Is Fabregas worth in excess of £35m? Would sooner use half that to bring in a Cabaye type and use what left to buy a developmental prospect e.g Sigurdsson, Dembele, Paulinho e.t.c.

Melvin should consider a career in diplomacy if this entertainment stuff doesn't work out for him.
