Editorialtimes:
Alleged Killers of PDP women leader, in Ochadamu paraded by the police in Lokoja.

The Kogi State Police Command has paraded Ocholi Edicha and five others for allegedly burning to death the PDP woman leader a day after the State Governorship Election.

Addressing Newsmen in his office, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Busari said the suspects would be arraigned in court very soon.

Ocholi Edicha, during interrogation confessed that he led the gang that burnt, Mrs Salome Abuh - the Police commissioner said.

He said the suspects further confessed that they were responsible for the series of armed robbery incidences in Ochadamu and its environment.

The Commissioner of Police condemned the killing of Mrs Salome, called for calm and assured that the perpetrators would not go unpunished, adding that efforts were being made to arrest other fleeing members of the gang.

Speaking on behalf of the gang, Ocholi Edicha confessed to slapping Mrs Salome Abuh on the day of the election, but denied the burning down of the house.

According to Ocholi Edicha, the burning down of the House of late Mrs Salome was carried out by members of the APC. He went further to explain that the members of the PDP earlier, were involved in a face-off with some members of the ruling party which led to the burning down of the house.

The news doesn't add up; in the same report, a paragraph said Ocholi Edicha confessed to leading others to burn the house, in another paragraph, he said it was APC supporters

Crime / Woman Fakes Her Kidnap To Extort Money From Husband In Kogi (full Story) by MosD: 1:09pm On Jun 26, 2019
As the criminal activities of kidnappers thrives unabated, a new dimension, which is self kidnapping, is beginning to become popular. Nigerians are still grappling with the report of a clergy man who faked his own kidnap to extort money from his church members in Ekiti State and here comes another of such scoundrelly act of a middle age woman of late 30s who ‘kidnapped’ herself to extort money from her husband in Kogi State.

Kabba town of Kogi State was thrown into frenzy on Monday, 24 June, 2019 with the revelation that a woman whom was kidnapped eleven days ago and the whole town in searched of actually kidnapped herself to extort money from her husband.

The Kidnap

Her staged kidnap was an unconventional one! She was reported to be sweeping outside her house around 5:30am on that fateful day with only wrapper tied when she was kidnapped.

The Negotiation

In what seemed a lone job, hours after she had been supposedly kidnapped, she sent a text message to her husband with her telephone line that she had been kidnapped. Later, she called to corroborate her earlier text message that she is in the hand of kidnappers.

Then began the real negotiation, but not before putting her husband, family and friends through three days emotional wreck of no communication.

As her family members, whom were totally in confused state, had come to accept, the kidnappers unusually negotiated through her and used her telephone line to communicate her people.

A such, she called, on the third day, that the ‘kidnappers’ are demanding for five million naira.

The negotiation lasted for days, with her family members haggling it until the ransom price got to one million naira, where she told her people that the kidnappers said they could not go below.

Meanwhile, occasionally, during some of her calls, she faked cry from torture, with words like, “please don’t beat me, my husband is yet to get the money he is expecting.”

The Ransom

After running around, the family was able to raise two hundred thousand naira. When the ‘kidnappers’ called through her, as usual, the family told the kidnappers the amount they had been able to raise thus far. she called back later to let them know that the ‘kidnappers’ were furious and would not take the amount. But that the kidnappers said the family can go ahead and deposit that amount for a start.

When the family sort to know where the money will be dropped, she said the kidnappers said they should deposit it in her account, that they know how to retrieve it.

As they say, the man with the gun is the boss, so the family did as ordered.

The Bust

The reason kidnapping crime is difficult to bust is because no family wants any of its member to be killed when it can go an extra mile to save such life. And so the husband went extra mile to source for another five hundred thousand naira.

He was able to get the money on Friday, 21 June, 2019. Armed with the money, the ‘kidnappers’ were again contacted to enquire how to get the money across. Again, the ‘kidnappers’ speaking through the kidnapped woman said the money should be deposited in her account.

As it was, time was of the essence, the bank had closed as at the time the money was ready.

In distress, the family rushed to the bank to confirm if there was any help that could be rendered to transfer the money.

While plea was still ongoing with the bank officials, a text message came in from the kidnappers telling them not to worry, that the payment could be left till on Monday.

Amongst those doing the running around was a younger brother to the husband. The text message pricked his intuition and he immediately excused himself.

He went and got telephone call tracker and the investigation began.

They called the kidnapped woman number and tracked it to Ilorin, Kwara state capital. Same younger brother took off to Ilorin, went to a police station and narrated the details.

Police swung into action and with the aid of a tracker, they were able to track the ‘kidnappers’ telephone call to the kidnapped woman’s elder sister’s house in Ilorin.

Police arrived the house and knocked, the door was locked and there seemed to be none at home. When enquiries were made from neighbours, they said the occupant of the house had traveled for over a week.

The police, however, got a break with a neighbour who said she saw the occupant’s younger sister arriving on the day she left, but she would not know if she had also left the house.

Apparently, that was all the police needed to hear. Reinforced, the police tried the more to see if there was someone in the house, but there seemed to be none. It was said that they even teargassed the environment in a bid to smoke the occupants out, yet, there was no sign of life.

Then the police decided to play it the waiting game. They kept watch of the house from Saturday, waiting for the occupant to slip.

Then came the slip on Sunday. A water seller, who, apparently was called to supply the house water, dropped the water and went to the back of the house to collect money as must had been directed, and phew, the supposedly kidnapped woman was apprehended by policemen!

As at the time of writing this piece, the elder sister, whom the ‘kidnapped’ woman must had been hand in glove with, is still at large.

Background check

ACEGIST investigation found out that the husband, who should be closer to seventy than sixty, married the woman few years back after staying single for over a decade following the loss of his wife.

It was also discovered that the man was expecting some money, hence, his wife’s means of getting a slice, and possibly a chunk of it.

The senator who shared the news on his twitter page, wrote:

“Nuhu Salisu AKA Small has died in questionable circumstances in police custody. He is one of the 2 suspects arraigned along with me in the case of conspiracy and illegal possession of fire arm. Both suspects have since denied b4 d court knowing me or getting any fire arm from me.”

Politics / There Is No Jibril In Aso Rock, Caesar Is Healthy – Shehu Sani by MosD: 10:14am On Nov 16, 2018
If the word of Senator Shehu Sani can be taken as gospel, then this should put to rest the back and forth argument about whether the number one manbin Aso Rock is the real Muhammadu Buhari or Jibril from Sudan.

Many have alleged that the nation is being scammed by some cabal in Aso Rock by presenting a cloned person to act as President Muhammadu Buhari.

But debunking such rumour, Sani said that is not true.

Sani tweet read:

There’s no one & nothing like Jibril El sudan.Caesar is healthy & has no double. But you can literally refer Jibrin as an imaginative and mythical character in Shakespearean Nigeria. Its natural to creatively invent characters & promote conjectures in our theatre of the absurd.

Politics / See Atiku's Response To Ben Bruce Outburst To Umahi's Reaction On Obi's Choice by MosD: 8:11am On Oct 17, 2018
Senator Ben Murray Bruce has angrily reacted to the dissatisfaction expressed by Eboyin State Governor, David Umahi, on the method used in selecting former Governor Peter Obi as the running mate of the Peoples Democratic party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2019 general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Umahi has said he has nothing against Obi, but due consultation of the Easterners should had been made by Atiku and those concerned on the choice of one of theirs before announcing him for such prospective exalted position.

Ben Bruce, on his twitter page, wrote:

“@Atiku has oompah and this is definitely his time. We in the @OfficialPDPNig do not need any body to jinx this momentum. Umahi should take a chill pill. Atiku and Peter Obi must be allowed to surf this wave all the way to power without any naysayers trying to stop the movement.”

However, in a surprised reply, Atiku played a fatherly role as he cautioned Ben Bruce.

He wrote:

Politics / The World Marks 31st Year Of Sankara’s Death, Can Nigeria Ever Produce His Kind? by MosD: 9:13am On Oct 16, 2018
The Nigeria political scene is currently being heated up with activities of who clinches what seat in the next general election, especially the number one seat of the nation, the president.

While Nigerians have been earnestly hoping for a messiah, especially since the return to democracy in 1999, AceGist's pertinent rhetorical question is, can Nigeria, with the depth of corruption amongst our politician, ever produce a Thomas Sankara?

But who is Thomas Sankara, and why is he being used as a model in this article. Let us take a peep into Sankara’s world and judge if he is such Nigeria needs at a time like this.

Read Also: Nigeria This Week In History: July 29, 1966 Coup D'etat (Nigeria Bloodiest Coup)

– Thomas Sankara was the former president of Burkina Faso who came into power at age 33 through a popularly supported coup organised by his friend, Blaise Compaore, on 4th August, 1983, with the goal of eliminating corruption and former French colonial power.

– Sankara renamed the country from French colonial Upper Volta to Burkina Faso (“Land of Upright Man”), a year after his accession with the aim of changing the mindset of his people.

– His government eschewed all foreign aid, as he said, “he who feeds you controls you.”
– He sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso then) the official service car of the ministers.

– He reduced salaries of well-off civil servants, including his own.

– Thomas Sankara’s domestic policies were focused on preventing famine with agrarian self sufficiency and land reform. He doubled their staple food – wheat – production.

– He prioritised education with a nationwide literacy campaign.

– Sankara promoted public health by vaccinating 2.5 million children in one week against meningitis, polio, yellow fever and measles. He was the first African leader to recognise AIDS as a threat to Africa.

– Thomas Sankara embarked on massive road and railway construction programme to “tie the nation together.”

Read Also: A Peep At The Disputed Jerusalem Following Trumps Declaration

– He had over 350 communities built schools with their own labour.

– Thomas Sankara embarked on large scale housing and infrastructural projects.

– All these were done without any foreign aid.
– Sankara prosecuted corrupt officers in popular Revolutionary Tribunals.

– Going by his popular saying, “…women hold up the other half of the sky,” Thomas Sankara was foremost women right emancipation who encouraged women to work outside the home and stay in school even if pregnant. He was the first in Africa to appoint women to major cabinet position and to recruit them actively for the military.

– Four years into his regime, on October 15, 1987, at age 37, Thomas Sankara was overthrown and assassinated by the same Blaise Compaore we earlier mentioned. Stating deterioration in relation with neighbouring countries as reason.

– A week before his death, he declared: “While revolutionary as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.”

– Thomas Sankara possessions at death were a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer.

Now you know whom Thomas Sankara was and the sacrifices he made to the point of death to make his country great.

It is worthy of note that Sankara met a decayed Burkina Faso as at the time he took over the mantle of leadership and it took him just four years - which is usually Nigeria politicians cliché; 'one term is not enough to fix a rotten state' - with lean resources, to turn a nation around.

The question again is; can Nigeria ever have a Thomas Sankara?

Politics / Update On Kogi West PDP Senatorial Ticket by MosD: 3:08pm On Sep 21, 2018
News have been making the rounds that a front line aspirant in the forthcoming People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Kogi West Senatorial Primary election, Honourable Tajudeen Yusuf, who is currently representing Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has stepped down for Senator Dino Melaye, who is the current senator representing the constituency.

The news said after extensive meeting with stakeholders and Kabba PDP leaders, Hon. T.J Yusuf has stepped down for Senator Dino Melaye and agreed to pick House of Representatives ticket instead.

But speaking with an aide of Hon.Yusuf through a telephone call, he told AceGist that contrary to the erroneous believe, Hon. T.J Yusuf did not step down for Dino Melaye.

Correcting the adulterated news making the rounds, the aide, who preferred to be anonymous said: “I have seen the news, it is not as presented.

“Putting the record straight, the national body of our great party, PDP, insisted that awarding the sitting National Assembly members’ returnees with return ticket was one of the agreement reached before they defected.

“Despite our insistence, they remain unmoved. So as a true party loyalist, Hon.T.J gave in to the superiority of the party’s demand.

“Consequently, status quo are to remain; while Dino gets the party’s Kogi West Senatorial ticket, Tee Jay retains the House of Representatives ticket.”

The aide added that this is what is obtainable nationally in the party and not peculiar to Kogi West alone.

Politics / Open Letter: The Height Of Injustice And Impunity By AEDC, Kabba by MosD: 9:26pm On Feb 26, 2018
Permit me to use this forum to bring to your notice and indeed that of all Nigerians, the inhuman act the Kabba, Kogi State branch of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) is meting out on Edumo, a community under their purview.

It started on Saturday, 24 February, when they carried out disconnection at Edumo. An ugly incident was said to have ensued between them and a household, thus leading to exchange of words and later, a claim from the AEDC agents that their car tire was deflated.

This led to the arrest of the person that had problem with them.

Then, in flexing their muscle further, the AEDC agents decided to disconnect the transformer of the entire community, thereby rendering about one thousand household that the transformer serve without light for three days running.

As if their injustice was not enough, a self acclaimed rich man in the community who took his own light directly from the transformer called the same AEDC agents on Sunday, only for them to come and connect only his own fuse. By implication, a transformer that serves about a thousand household now render service to only one household who could afford to 'settle,' what an impunity!

The questions begging for answers are:

- if the community was on prepaid metre, would AEDC had afford to willfully switch off an entirely community because of a grievance with one person?

- if it had been in a 'big man's' community, would AEDC had meted the same inhuman punishment?

- if it had been a community that is known for lawlessness, would AEDC had attempted such?

This country belongs to all of us, and until we start seeing it a such, injustice and impunity will continue to prevail and no matter how well our leaders try, their effort will count less.

Politics / Nigeria This Week In History: British Southern Cameroon Voted To Be Out Of Niger by MosD: 2:41pm On Feb 11, 2018
Have you ever imagined how the map of Nigeria would look like if the former British Southern Cameroon is still part of Nigeria? Given the opportunity to decide their fate though a plebiscite, the British Southern Cameroon opted for Cameroon, while the British Northern Cameroon stuck with Nigeria. Nigeria This Week In History analyses the event that led to the plebiscite.

The “Scramble for Africa” at the end of the 19th century saw to Germany claiming the present day Cameroon as a protectorate.

However, that did not last beyond 1919. After Germany lost the battle of World War 1, its former colony, Cameroon, was given to France and British through the League of Nations Mandate.

The French mandate was known as Cameroon and the British mandate was administered as two areas; Northern Cameroon and southern Cameroon. With the defunct of the League of Nations after the World War II, the British Cameroon came under the United Nations Trusteeship.

You may also like: Nigeria This Week In History: Ikeja Cantonment Bomb Blast

For ease of administration, the British Southern Cameroon was integrated into the Nigeria Eastern Region. This caused a lot of discontent on the side of the Southern Cameroonians as they felt marginalised by the Eastern Region of Nigeria which they complained made them look more of a colony to the Nigeria government than a mandate.

To redress the above complain by the Southern Cameroon, a conference was held in Ibadan in 1950 and this gave birth to a new constitution for Nigeria and the Southern Cameroon in July 1951.

As a result of the new constitution, the British Southern Cameroons was able to conduct the first Parliamentary Elections in the territory. The election brought the first Southern Cameroonian representatives in the Eastern House of Assembly in Enugu, Nigeria, and in the Federal House of Assembly in Lagos, Nigeria.

This did not however put an end to the complain of the British Southern Cameroon about the oppression of the Eastern Region of Nigeria. This led the British Southern Cameroonian representatives in the Eastern House of Assembly in Enugu to declare “benevolent neutrality” and walked out of the House in 1954.

Apparently for permanent solution, the British government at the London conference of 1954 agreed that the British Southern Cameroon should separate from the Eastern Region and enjoy autonomous self governance within the Nigeria federation.

This led to the creation of Southern Cameroonian parliament in 1954 with Dr. E.M.L. Endeley becoming its first premier.

However, with the French Cameroon becoming independent in January 1960 and that of Nigeria in the offing, the question of what to do with British territory of British Cameroons was raised.

Having ruled out independence for the British Southern and Northern Cameroons, a plebiscite was agreed to be held on either to join Nigeria or the French Cameroon. And it was held on 11 February, 1961.

Northern Cameroon, which is of Muslim majority voted to be integrated into Nigeria with 60% to 40%, while the Southern Cameroon which is of Christian majority voted to be integrated into Cameroon with 70.5% to 29.5%.

Northern Cameroon became a region of Nigeria on 31 May, 1961, while Southern Cameroon became part of Cameroon on 1 October, 1961.

Areas that were once part of Northern Cameroon include: Dikwa in Maiduguri, Gwozo in Borno state and Jalingo in Taraba.
