HealthWhy You Must Have Sex Often by MRMICKMEN(op): 2:33am On Aug 27, 2013
Most people are aware of the health benefits that come with having sex. After all – sex is, in fact, exercise, and everyone can appreciate the fact that burning calories while enjoying sex is like a packaged deal. However, studies suggest that there are even more benefits that come with sex, beyond a healthier heart.

SEX IS AN IMMUNE BOOSTER

The first, and somewhat surprising, positive effect of sex is a healthier immune system. You see, doctors evaluate immune systems by assessing levels of the antigen immunoglobulin A, or IGa, which can help your body fight infections. IGa is found in saliva and mucosal linings, and it plays a vital role in the body’s immunity. In fact, IGa produces about 75% of the body’s total immunoglobulin.

Evidence connecting higher IGa levels to sex on a regular basis was found in a study conducted at Wilkes University. Participants in the study who had sex once or twice a week had IGa levels that were 30% higher than those participants who were abstinent. Careful though – participants who engaged in very frequent sex (three or more times a week) had IGa levels that were even lower than those who were abstinent. What’s the bottom line? This study proves that regular sex can boost your immunity.

SEX REDUCES PAIN

During sex, the body produces a hormone called oxytocin. Known as the “love hormone”, oxytocin escalations trigger the release of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers. Once the endorphins kick in, pain is numbed and you feel better for hours, and sometimes even days, after sex. If you suffer from frequent headaches, arthritis, or other reoccurring pain, remember that the act of sex can reduce your level of pain, thanks to oxytocin.

Where’s the proof? While there have been numerous studies performed on the positive effects of oxytocin, one study proves the connection between sex and pain reduction rather simply. The Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine published results of a study conducted in which participants received oxytocin vapors prior to having their fingers pricked with a needle – results established that their pain thresholds were cut in half. Furthermore, oxytocin helps the body sleep better, so it’s no surprise that sex corresponds with better sleep.

PROSTATE CANCER RISK LOWERED WITH SEX

Prostate cancer is a major worry for many men in the United States, and rightly so because it’s the second most common type of cancer in men. In fact, almost 29,000 men died from prostate cancer in 2009, so it’s no surprise that numerous studies have been performed about the diease. The prostate, a walnut –sized gland between a man’s bladder and penis, is directly related to men’s health and sexual performance.

Interestingly, studies have found a thought-provoking connection between frequent ejaculations in young men in their twenties and a lowered rate of prostate cancer. The most recent studies note that frequent sex and/or ejaculation can decrease the risk of prostate cancer by approximately 33%.

SEX SUPPORTS HEALTHY PELVIC FLOOR MUSCLES

Most women have heard of the pelvic floor strengthening exercise known as the kegel, which actually has health benefits for both men and women. In women, strong pelvic floor muscles are associated with greater sexual pleasure and a decreased chance of incontinence later on in life.

While these muscles are important, they have often been overlooked when it comes to women’s health and overall wellbeing. Healthy pelvic floor muscles are those that have an ideal blood supply and are strong and toned – without a healthy pelvic floor, women are susceptible to pelvic organ prolapse, frequent urinations throughout the day and night, loss of vaginal tone, and more.

Do you know of any additional surprising health benefits to having sex? We’d love to hear them! Please share them in the comments below
Health11 Nutrition Myths That Cause Weight Gain by MRMICKMEN(op): 4:24am On Aug 26, 2013
1. Going vegan is a healthy way to lose weight.

"While various research shows that vegetarians and vegans, on average, consume fewer calories and less fat than omnivores (a 2009 Oxford study found that vegetarians weigh 3 to 20 percent less than their meat-eating counterparts, and a National Cancer Institute study found that subjects who consumed four ounces or more of red meat weekly were 30 percent more likely to die of any cause than those who ate less), these numbers may be misleading," says Rania Batayneh, MPH, a certified nutritionist and owner of Essential Nutrition for You.

Going vegan solely for weight loss can backfire, big time. If you aren't vigilant with a vegan diet, it's easy to lack in vital nutrients, vitamins, and proteins, which give you energy and help keep your metabolism stoked. Many first-time vegans may also find themselves reaching for more processed foods like vegan cookies, chips, or even 'ice cream' more often with such a restricted diet, and many end up packing on the pounds instead.

If you do decide to adopt a vegan diet, be sure to keep the 'treats' to a minimum and plan balanced meals. "Aim to get about 10 to 20 percent of your calories from protein (or about 1 gram per kilogram of body weight), replacing animal protein with healthy plant proteins, like those found in beans, legumes, eggs, nuts, seeds, low-fat dairy, and soy products," Batayneh says. "And, whether you are vegan or not, eating more green, leafy vegetables is great for your health and your waistline."

2. Cut all carbs to shed pounds. Your body needs 'carbs' for energy, and many carbohydrate foods are rich in essential vitamins, nutrients, and dietary fiber that help you stay full and fuel your workouts. "Eliminating carbohydrates not only reduces whole grains, B vitamins, and a good source of fiber, but it also reduces your body's feel-good capacity (it's no wonder that most comfort foods are carbohydrate based)," Batayneh says.

Plus, cutting out food groups may only make you crave them more, and you may find yourself finishing off an entire bag of chips in a moment of weakness. "Starches and carbs are actually an important tool in weight management," Batayneh says. "They provide belly-filling fiber, complex carbohydrates to keep your engine running all day, and they stimulate the production of serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter that regulates mood."

Stay healthy, full, and happy while dropping the lbs. by swapping out processed carbs for fiber- and nutrition-filled foods like vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

3. Diet drinks are a good way to cut calories. You may think you're doing yourself a favor by sipping artificially sweetened drinks, but recent research says you may just be setting yourself up to crave sweets even more. 'Fake' sugar can trick our bodies, since we aren't actually providing it with any calories to back up the sweetness, causing a vicious cycle of cravings. "Artificial sweeteners tend to trigger your appetite-making you want more and more sugar-but without actually satisfying a desire for sweets like normal sugar does," Batayneh says. "Diet soda-drinkers may end up eating tons of sugary and fatty snacks in order to satisfy their cravings."

Case in point: One University of Texas study found that people who drink diet soda regularly (more than two per day) had a 70 percent greater waist circumference than those that don't. Not to mention, diet sodas are also often loaded with additives, including caramel coloring, which is made by reacting sugars with ammonia and sulfites, resulting in two compounds that have been found to cause lung, liver, and thyroid cancers in mice, Batayneh says.

4. Fat-free snacks are better for your waistline. "Reduced-fat versions of snacks typically have been stripped of one quarter of their original healthy monounsaturated fats, and to replace that flavor, the brand adds in fillings, additives, and sugar-all for the same amount of calories," Batayneh says. "Picking reduced-fat products may even end up hurting your waistline: in one study, average-weight participants ate 22 percent more calories if the food was labeled 'low fat' and overweight participants ate up to 50 percent more."

Your body needs fat to absorb vitamins, and it may also help you shed pounds-a recent Stanford University study found that people on a moderate-fat diet lost twice as much weight as subjects eating a low fat diet.

So skip the highly processed, fat-free snacks that are basically empty calories and fill up on healthy, whole foods that will help you stay satisfied on a lower-calorie diet such as avocados, nuts, and coconuts.

5. Fruit has too much sugar to be healthy for weight loss. With all the sugar that is added to processed foods, the sugar in fruit is the least of your worries. Getting rid of fruit means you are losing out on valuable vitamins and nutrients that your body absorbs easily since they're found in their natural, whole state.

"Eliminating fruit from your diet when trying to lose weight makes no sense," Batayneh says. You'll miss out on a whole lot of filling fiber, which studies have directly linked to long-term weight loss, and you may be more likely to reach for other processed, empty food items instead.

6. Protein shakes will help you lose weight. Drinking protein shakes alone can't help you lose weight, but replacing a meal with them could. The trouble is, many would-be dieters make the mistake of adding in a shake to their current daily intake, which can pack on the pounds (this is why bodybuilders trying to gain size use them often).

If you want to add protein shakes to your diet, look for a mix that is low in sugar and has a short ingredient list. Depending on the calorie count, and what you add to it (Batayneh recommends whey protein, milk, and fruit), you can substitute a shake for a snack or a meal to help move the scale down, not up.

7. A high-protein diet is the best way to shed fat. While protein is important for weight loss, eliminating other food groups (like carbs) for the sake of eating more protein could be setting you up for a carbo-loading binge later. Plus, you may be missing out on the fiber, vitamins, and minerals found in unprocessed carbohydrates, and you run the risk of eating too much fat in your diet, which can lead to high cholesterol and triglycerides, Batayneh says.

Skip the yo-yo cycle and round out your meals with a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. "When you have all three macro-nutrients in your diet, you are less likely to feel deprived and may experience less cravings."

8. Swear off all your favorite fattening foods to lose weight. Anyone who has ever sworn off pizza, chocolate, or chips knows that as soon as you tell yourself you can't have them, you start dreaming of swimming in gooey, cheesy pizza or rich, dark chocolate cake. "Moderation is key. We tend to be in 'all or nothing' mode when we diet. And while you can't have pizza, french fries, and chocolate cake all in the same day, with careful planning, you can still enjoy them in moderation," Batayneh says. Have your cake, and eat it too-just share it with a friend or save the other half for another day.

9. Eating after 8 p.m. makes you fat. Eating after a certain hour won't necessarily mean you'll pack on pounds, just as staying out after midnight won't turn you into a pumpkin. This Cinderella-esque fat fairy tale continues to exist, but the bottom line is that your metabolism doesn't know what time it is, Batayneh says.
Skip the mad rush to consume as much food as you can before the clock strikes 8:00.

"Calories are calories, no matter when you eat them, but what does matter is what and how much of it you eat. Late-night snacking gets a bad rap because often the foods that are consumed late at night are calorie-dense foods (chips, ice cream, pizza, and other junk food) and may be in excess calories to your daily caloric needs, which translates to weight gain."

10. You'll burn more fat if you don't eat before a workout. Exercise normally burns away your glycogen (carbohydrate) reserves, and when you're done burning those, you'll start dipping into your fat stores for energy. It's true that when you're already running on empty, you burn fat right away, but you'll likely run out of steam before your workout is over or end up ravenous and grabbing whatever food you can find in an attempt to refuel afterwards, Batayneh says.

"Energy comes from calories. A study from the University of Birmingham compared two groups of cyclists-some ate before their workout and the others fasted. While the group who fasted did end up burning more fat, the group who ate cycled at a much higher intensity than the fasting group, and burned more calories. A person needs fuel to run, just like a car, so find the foods that give you the energy to work out at your hardest."

11. You can eat whatever you want on weekends. If you do the math, eating 'whatever you want' Friday-Sunday adds up to 12 days-or almost half of a 30-day month! Not exactly the recipe for weight loss success. "When you throw caution to the wind on the weekends it can actually offset the consistency and success you had all week," Batayneh says. Instead of taking a no-holds-barred approach to your weekends, Batayneh recommends trying to scale back the little things that really add up like the bread basket and having a few extra glasses of wine during dinners out, along with mindless munching out of boredom.
HealthEuropean Experiments With Sex Drive-ins by MRMICKMEN(op): 3:50am On Aug 26, 2013
The Swiss city of Zurich is to open a sex drive-in on Monday approved by voters to help get prostitution off the streets.
Similar initiatives exist in Germany and Italy, while Belgium and the Netherlands have come up with a different approach. Here are some examples.
-- GERMANY --
- The cathedral city of Cologne established a drive-in brothel in October 2001 with eight rooms, called "sex-huts" or "performance boxes" into which motorists drive with prostitutes, as if in a garage or petrol station.
The site, which served as a model for Zurich, is equipped with an alarm button and toilet facilities.
Police keep watch and the Catholic Women's Welfare Service (SkF) provides care services for the several dozen prostitutes who work there.
Sabine Reichert of the SkF has been quoted by German media as saying that the system led to a "considerable decline in violent acts against the women."
- Dortmund, also in western Germany, installed "prostitute boxes" a few months before Cologne with the same aim of protecting sex workers and providing social and medical services.
Twenty boxes operated for several years but in 2007 they became a nexus of criminal gangs from eastern Europe and were closed in April 2011.
- Bonn installed six wood-walled spaces in January 2011 in a parking lot near the city. An official has been quoted as saying that 20-25 prostitutes work there on a regular basis.
-- ITALY --
Italy has several sex drive-ins, which are used by prostitutes and clients as well as by young couples who are still living at home.
Prostitution is legal in Italy, but solicitation and brothels are not, so while the sites are tolerated, they have sparked opposition from local residents and the Catholic Church.
- In Pozzuoli, near Naples, two entrepreneurs opened a "Love Park" in May with 32 places for cars separated by blue tarpaulin curtains for privacy.
The facility in a park was shut down by local authorities, re-opened, and has now been closed again. It charged a minimum fee of five euros ($6.70) for two hours, plus 1.5 euros for each additional hour.
- In Crema, near Milan, "Luna Parking" charges five euros an hour and 10 euros for the entire night. It has 38 open-air garage spaces and curtains for privacy, and reportedly hosts around 30 visits a day.
It too has been shut down several times, including by a former local parish priest who organised prayer vigils in the area.
- In Bari, southern Italy, the "Lovely Park" offers 50 spaces with less privacy for three euros an hour.
-- BELGIUM --
In Belgium, where prostitution is not legal, but tolerated, the eastern city of Seraing wants to build an pedestrian-only "Eros centre" that would cover 2,000 square metres (21,500 square feet) to provide prostitutes with 34 rooms and a clean and safe environment.
The design includes a discrete police locale and a 4,000 square-metre (43,000 square-foot) parking lot, which in theory would be off-limits for sex.
-- NETHERLANDS --
In Holland, where "window" prostitution has been legal since 2000, street-walking "Tipplezones" are tolerated in five towns, although Amsterdam closed such a site in late 2003.
Others have also shut down, often due to problems stemming from the use of hard drugs such as heroin.
In the central city of Utrecht, almost 100 so-called "sex house boats" were recently closed, with the city's mayor citing concerns over human trafficking.
In Groningen and Heerlen they are supervised and provide access to legal aid and free contraceptives, and in some cases walled drive-through corridors have been set up for more discretion.
AFP reporters in Berlin, Rome, Brussels and The Hague contributed to this story.

HealthThe Truth About Love And Romantic Chemistry by MRMICKMEN(op): 12:09pm On Aug 13, 2013
Q: In a nutshell, why do people fall in love?

Dr. Fisher: I’ve come to think that romantic love is one of three basic brain systems that evolved for reproduction. Each evolved for a reason: The libido evolved to get you out there looking for partners. Romantic love evolved to enable you to focus your energy on just one person at a time, conserving time and energy. And attachment, the feeling of security you can feel with a long-term partner, evolved to help you stay together long enough to raise your kids.

Q: Why does being in love feel so good?

Dr. Fisher: Because some of the most powerful brain circuits for pleasure are triggered. The main chemical involved is dopamine, which produces feelings of euphoria, energy, sleeplessness and focused attention on your beloved. Biologically speaking, you’re experiencing something similar to a high.

Q: Is there such a thing as love at first sight?

Dr. Fisher: Yes. It probably happens to men more than women because men are more visual, but I think we can all remember times when we felt an instant attraction to someone we barely knew. It has a practical purpose: in the animal kingdom you can’t spend three months discussing your résumé; you need to feel instant sparks to start the reproductive process.

Q: Is falling in love all about timing?

Dr. Fisher: Timing is important. The perfect partner can sit right next to you at a party and you might not notice him or her if you’re too busy at work, enmeshed in another relationship or otherwise preoccupied. But if you’ve just moved to a new city, recovered from an unsatisfying love affair, begun to make enough money to raise a family, are suffering through a difficult experience or have a good deal of spare time, you are ripe to fall in love.

Q: Is there anything we can do to make someone fall for us (or make ourselves fall for someone)?

Dr. Fisher: Do new things together. Novelty and excitement all drive up the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. These neurotransmitters are associated with energy, elation, focused attention and motivation — all central traits of romantic love. So as you do novel things, these chemicals hop into action and may just push you over the threshold to fall in love.

Q: Is there anything you can do to make yourself stop loving someone?

Dr. Fisher: Some people, especially women, tend to talk about a failed relationship so much that they re-traumatize themselves. Instead, get rid of your ex’s cards and letters. Don’t call or write. Get some sunshine and exercise, because both can change your brain chemistry.

Q: What’s the difference between love and lust?

Dr. Fisher: Lust generally dissipates after physical intimacy and returns hours or days later. You can feel it for several people at the same time and not necessarily feel jealous. But when you’re in love, you are very possessive. And romantic feelings don’t dissipate after becoming physical with someone; in fact, they can intensify.

Q: Does physical intimacy make people fall in love?

Dr. Fisher: It can trigger love — probably because afterwards, there’s a peak in dopamine activity. So watch out — you might unintentionally fall for someone.

Q: Do feelings of love die over time, and is there any way to bring them back?

Dr. Fisher: The first intense period of love can last one to three years. After that, these feelings subside. But if two people are compatible, there are many ways to renew a flagging partnership. Novelty can spur romance; physical intimacy can trigger it, too. Do some of the things that you used to when you were first dating.

Q: How important a role does chemistry play in love?

Dr. Fisher: I believe that when the chemistry of one personality meshes well with the chemistry of another, it will continually combust throughout the relationship — keeping both partners together and happy during dry spells when feelings of romance are low.

Q: How do men and women experience love differently?

Dr. Fisher: Men fall in love faster than women do. Women take longer because they have to create a “memory trail” of their mate’s behaviors. She has to remember what he promised, what he’s done for the partnership, and what he failed to do.

Q: What do men look for in a mate?

Dr. Fisher: Men are more likely to choose women who display signs of youth and beauty — the first time that they marry, men around the world tend to marry women who are three years younger than themselves. Men are also attracted to women who “need” them. Men want to be helpful.

Q: What do women look for in a mate?

Dr. Fisher: Women are attracted to partners with money, status and ambition — one study found that American women seek partners who offered financial security twice as frequently as men do. If men look for “arm candy,” then women look for “success magnets.”

Q: Can someone truly love more than one person?

Dr. Fisher: No. I think you can feel lust for more than one person, and feelings of attachment for more than one person. But not love. As the Indian aphorism goes, “The lane of love is narrow; there is room for only one.”

Q: What’s the biggest mistake people make when it comes to love?

Dr. Fisher: Some people fall in love before they really know their partner and marry in this state of romantic rapture. They should probably wait until that intense early phase wears off so they can see the flaws in the relationship before they dive in for good.

Q: Having reviewed so much scientific data on love, what would be the most important thing we’ve learned?

Dr. Fisher: To me, the most important thing that scientists have learned is that romantic love was not invented by the troubadours in 11th-century France. We have now found love poetry from the ancient Sumerians written some 4,000 years ago, as well as evidence of romantic love in over 150 societies. It’s given me a deep sense of connection to people everywhere: We’re all alike in some basic and beautiful ways.
HealthEating Raw Garlic Can Reduce Risk Of Lung Cancer By Nearly Half, Says Study by MRMICKMEN(op): 10:37am On Aug 09, 2013
According to a new study out of China, eating raw garlic at least twice a week can significantly reduce your chances of developing lung cancer — by up to 44 per cent overall, and even up to 30 per cent if you're a smoker.
Interviewing nearly 6,000 people (4,543 who were cancer free and over 1,424 who were suffering from lung cancer) between the years 2003 and 2010, the researchers surveyed them about their diet, their exposure to pollution, tobacco smoke (smoker and non-smoker), high-temperature cooking oils, and on their family history of cancer (they identified the leading causes as being cigarette smoke and fumes from high-temperature cooking oil). They found that those who reported eating raw garlic at least two times a week were only 56% likely to have lung cancer. When they specifically dealt with those who were smokers, the likelihood rose some, to 70%. Presumably, this is in comparison to those who did not consume garlic twice a week, and had developed lung cancer

The researchers apparently credit a chemical in garlic called allicin, which is released when the plant is cut, crushed or damaged (and it's what gives garlic its distinct smell). Allicin is the garlic plant's defense mechanism, as it's toxic to insects, as well as bacteria and other microorganisms. However, when it's released inside our bodies, it's known to reduce inflammation and act as an anti-oxidant. Inflammation of our cells due to irritants and toxins, as well as the oxidizing effects of 'free-radicals' — atoms that easily 'steal' electrons from the atoms that make up the cells in our bodies — can both cause damage to our DNA that results in cancer.
Cooked garlic, by comparison, may not have the same effect as this study reports. Allicin is an unstable chemical, breaking down on its own within about 16 hours at room temperature. As with many unstable chemicals, heating it to higher temperatures simply speeds up that process.

We've known about the healing properties of garlic for quite a long time, even if we didn't know exactly what it was in the garlic that did the healing. It contains vitamins such as C and B6. It's a good source of iodine, which is essential to our health. It is also thought to lower blood sugar levels and raises both insulin levels and insulin sensitivity (making it more effective). Garlic has already been linked to prevention of cancers that are more directly linked to eating it (ie: those in the gastrointestinal tract), but this is yet another study that shows how its general effects on our body have a more wide-ranging benefit.
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, it's estimated that over 180,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer in 2013, and lung cancer will likely account for over 26,000 of those cases.
In an interview with Global News, Robert Nuttall, the acting director of Cancer Control Policy at the Canadian Cancer Society, said "For lung cancer, the number one thing a person can do is not smoke, and we also know that healthy diets … with combinations of fruits and vegetables, can reduce the risk of cancer. And garlic is one component of that diet.

Health5 Foods That'll Make You Look Younger by MRMICKMEN(op): 4:06am On Aug 05, 2013
1. Sweet Potatoes

Beta-carotene, which makes these tubers orange, balances your skin's pH, helps combat dryness, and promotes cell turnover, all resulting in smoother skin

2. Wild Salmon

The pigment that makes the fish pink, astaxanthin, is a powerful foe of free radicals, rogue molecules that damage cell membranes and DNA and cause skin to age. A study found that eating one serving every five days can prevent actinic keratoses—ugly rough patches that are precancerous.

3. Tomatoes

The fruit's red pigment, lycopene, is a potent antioxidant that shields skin from sun damage—like sunscreen, but from the inside out. To best absorb lycopene, eat tomatoes with olive oil.

4. Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C is essential to building collagen, a vital component of young-looking skin, which starts breaking down in your twenties. Citrus also contains bioflavonoids, which protect skin from UV rays and help prevent cell death.

5. Leafy Greens

Spinach, kale, and other greens contain lutein, which protects skin from sun-induced inflammation and wrinkles.

Stay Away From White Foods

Need another reason to avoid white bread, pasta, rice, and other refined grain products? They're quickly broken down into the ultimate white food: sugar. Once in the bloodstream, sugar bonds with protein and creates advanced glycation end products (aptly abbreviated AGEs), which cause collagen to become inflamed and stiff, leading to wrinkles.

According to dermatologist Leslie Baumann, red wine contains skin-friendly grape-seed extract and resveratrol, two powerful antioxidants. Hops in beer, it turns out, may also offer antioxidant benefits.

HealthWomen Often Miss Easy Way To Increase Chances Of Getting Pregnant by MRMICKMEN(op): 6:24am On Jul 31, 2013
There's a simple, free step women can take to help them get pregnant, yet few women know about it, a new study shows.
Women who use the technique, known as cervical mucus monitoring, were more than twice as likely to conceive than women who did not track their cervical mucus.
"This technique can be used to help people get pregnant faster," said Dr. Anne Steiner, an ob-gyn at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and senior author of the paper. "It's exciting to potentially say this is a real way to help people; it's so cheap and easy."
Cervical mucus changes in viscosity throughout a woman's cycle. When an egg develops in the ovary, estrogen is released, making the mucus thinner and slippery. This enables sperm to swim to the egg more easily. After the egg is released, a spike in progesterone causes mucus to thicken and act as a barrier to other sperm. Thus, tracking the state of this cervical mucus gives insight into a woman's fertility.
The study followed 331 women ages 30 to 45 with no known fertility problems who had been trying to conceive for three months or less. Women were asked to categorize their cervical discharge as one of four types: type 1, dry or nonexistent; type 2, damp; type 3, thick and white or yellowish; and type 4, transparent and slippery.
Previous studies had found that women having intercourse on days when they had type 4 mucus were at least two to three times more likely to get pregnant than if they had intercourse on days when they had type 1 or type 2 mucus.
In the new study, the women who checked their cervical mucus consistently were 2.3 times more likely to get pregnant over a six-month period. [5 Myths About Fertility Treatments]
However, the researchers also found that very few women were actually diligent about monitoring it daily — only 6 percent did it consistently, whereas 54 percent of the women didn't bother to check their cervical mucus at all.
These women might be cheating themselves out of an effective and simple method of tracking their fertility, the researchers said. For example, simply counting the days between menses on the calendar can prove inexact, even for women with very regular cycles, and ovulation predictor kits, which track urinary levels of luteinizing hormone, can be expensive, costing between $20 and $40 per month.
Tracking body temperature to indicate ovulation also has limited usefulness because the signature temperature spike occurs after a woman has ovulated, giving retrospective information that only comes in handy for the next cycle, the researchers said.
Dr. Wendy Vitek, an ob-gyn at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, agreed that wider use of cervical mucus monitoring holds promise as a way to increase the odds of pregnancy.
"It makes intuitive sense that the women monitoring their cervical mucus more frequently had a better sense of when they're ovulating...You do need to make involved observations to know when you're at peak fertility," said Vitek, who was not involved in the study.
However, the technique may not be right for everyone.
"A lot of women may not see their cervical mucus externally," said Dr. Elizabeth Ginsburg, an ob-gyn at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
"My concern is, you tell a patient to look for this type of discharge, and [if] she doesn't see it, she may worry that she has fertility problems, when she's probably ovulating just fine," Ginsburg said.
The researchers suggest that women who are trying to conceive and who are able to observe their cervical mucus easily keep a daily record of the vaginal discharge, noting which category it falls into (1 through 4). On the days when they note type 4 discharge, it's probably the best time for women to try to conceive.
The study was published online July 12 in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

HealthWhy An Untreated Eating Disorder Might Keep You From Having Children by MRMICKMEN(op): 3:42am On Jul 29, 2013
Women who are ready to tackle the task of motherhood often try to implement healthy behaviors before they even try to get pregnant. Eating right, exercising and popping prenatal vitamins are often at the top of the to-do list. But now experts say some women should add one more item to the agenda: Getting help for untreated eating disorders.
Timing sex during ovulation is obviously the key to getting pregnant. Irregular and absent menstrual periods make it hard to predict ovulation-if you're ovulating at all. According to the Eating Recovery Center, an international center that provides treatment for eating disorders, one survey of women attending a fertility clinic with absent or irregular periods showed that 58 percent had an eating disorder. Another study showed that of women with unexplained infertility who restricted calories, even if they didn't meet the criteria for an eating disorder diagnosis, 73 percent conceived when they increased caloric intake and body weight.

Even with the clear connection between an eating disorder and an inability to conceive, women often hide disordered eating behaviors from their doctors and fertility specialists, says Ken Weiner, founding partner and CEO of Eating Recovery Center. Here are just a few things you should know if you're struggling with an eating disorder while wanting to conceive.

3 Things to Know About Eating Disorders and Fertility
1. Watch for triggers. While women try to be healthier by making changes to diet and exercise, if women have a family or personal history of eating disorders, these changes could trigger disordered eating behaviors for those with a predisposition toward the development of an eating disorder. Always check with your doctor before changing diet and exercise routines.
2. Disordered eating can affect fertility even if you're a normal weight. You don't have to have experienced major weight loss or be very low weight for irregular or absent periods to occur. While not all irregular or absent periods are caused by diet, weight or exercise, behaviors related to eating and exercise can impact the cycles, contributing to fertility challenges.
3. Talk to your doctor - honestly. Concerns and questions about the impact of diet and exercise on fertility should be directed to your OBGYN, fertility specialist or trusted doctor. Likewise, if you have concerns about your own eating and exercise behaviors, let your doctor in on your concerns. In addition to infertility and trouble conceiving, active eating disorders can also contribute to miscarriage and other complications for mother and child once conception does occur.
Because eating disorders impact not only the health of the mother but the health of the child as well, eating disorders and disordered eating behaviors deserve attention and support. Know the signs and symptoms of eating disorders so you can recognize the behaviors and urge those affected to get the help they need.
Health8 Bedroom Moves To Spice Up Your Life by MRMICKMEN(op): 4:02pm On Jul 25, 2013
No matter how intense and pleasurable your lovemaking sessions are, you will always feel the need to raise your performance bar. So, move beyond the three cliche steps- grab, grunt and fall asleep. And, try out some new moves to spice up your intimate moments. Make them sweet and romantic, and sometimes a bit raunchy too. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your time between the sheets.

Too much skin exposure in every act might ruin the excitement. Instead, keep your inner wear on. Start with pre-intimacy, teasing and stroking above the fabric. And, gradually remove each other’s bare essentials. This build-up of anticipation will drive your partner crazy. And, when you actually don your birthday suit, the lovemaking will be more intense and passionate.
Blow hot air

No matter how you like to do it, blowing hot air will enhance your pleasure. Exhale on each other’s ears, neck and face, and see how the magic works. This little hot air act will steam up your lovemaking session for sure.
Play a little rough

Well, all you ladies out there, this is a sure shot way to win over your partner. So, initiate the act by teasing and spanking him. Do all what he likes. Men like their women to be dominating in bed. While you are into the act, monitor the speed, change angles and at times nibble his ear lobes. This will definitely make him go wild and result in a thrilling session for sure.
Show your naughty side

Well, girls, here is another tip for you. Let go of your shyness and don a sexy look. Take out that lacy lingerie to entice him. And once you decide on your bare essentials, surprise him with an unusual place and a new move. This will surely leave you both with an explosive lovemaking.
Giving him the kiss treatment

Here is something to drive him crazy, just start the act with a gentle kiss on his forehead. Move on to kiss his eyelashes, his lips and work on his chest, until he starts craving for you. Now, undo the button of his jeans and move further south towards his treasure trail. Instead of coming to a halt there, work on his hip bones. This will guarantee him a ride to the pleasure town and lead to a great ‘thank you’ session.
Pamper the neglected boys

When your man is taking his pants off, your eyes are probably glued to his trump card, but do not neglect what makes the trump card functional. Give some importance to the supporting stars as well. Massage them softly and involve your tongue. This will arouse him like never before.
Keep her guessing

And, guys, it is your turn now. Unpredictability is what spices up the entire experience of lovemaking. Simply tease her by your incomplete movements. Slip in a little; refrain yourself from going all the way and give random thrusts. Keep her confused about your next move. This way your pleasure act will not only last longer, but will also break the monotony of the previous sessions.
Let her dominate

Well, all you men out there, we have a little secret to share. Your woman might agree to it or not, but she gains the utmost pleasure while being on top of you. So, set the stage tonight and surprise her by allowing her to rule you. Let her grab you and bite you. We guarantee that tonight will be a rocking night for you.
So, it is time you add some spice and drama into your bedroom, and enjoy those 'between the sheets' moments with your partner.
HealthSkipping Breakfast May Increase Heart Attack Risk by MRMICKMEN(op): 2:09am On Jul 24, 2013
A study of older men found those who regularly skipped breakfast had a 27 percent higher risk of a heart attack than those who ate a morning meal. There's no reason why the results wouldn't apply to other people, too, the Harvard researchers said.

Other studies have suggested a link between breakfast and obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other health problems seen as precursors to heart problems.

"But no studies looked at long-term risk of heart attack," said Eric Rimm, one of the study authors at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Why would skipping breakfast be a heart attack risk?

Experts aren't certain, but here's what they think: People who don't eat breakfast are more likely to be hungrier later in the day and eat larger meals. Those meals mean the body must process a larger amount of calories in a shorter amount of time. That can spike sugar levels in the blood and perhaps lead to clogged arteries.

But is a stack of syrupy pancakes, greasy eggs and lots of bacon really better than eating nothing?

The researchers did not ask what the study participants ate for breakfast, and were not prepared to pass judgment on whether a fatty, sugary breakfast is better than no breakfast at all.

Study: Skipping breakfast may raise risk of heart …
Other experts agreed that it's hard to say.

"We don't know whether it's the timing or content of breakfast that's important. It's probably both," said Andrew Odegaard, a University of Minnesota researcher who has studied a link between skipping breakfast and health problems like obesity and high blood pressure.

"Generally, people who eat breakfast tend to eat a healthier diet," he added.

The new research was released Monday by the journal Circulation. It was an observational study, so it's not designed to prove a cause and effect. But when done well, such studies can reveal important health risks.

The researchers surveyed nearly 27,000 men about their eating habits in 1992. About 13 percent of them said they regularly skipped breakfast. They all were educated health professionals — like dentists and veterinarians — and were at least 45.

Over the next 16 years, 1,527 suffered fatal or non-fatal heart attacks, including 171 who had said they regularly skipped breakfast.

In other words, over 7 percent of the men who skipped breakfast had heart attacks, compared to nearly 6 percent of those who ate breakfast.

The researchers calculated the increased risk at 27 percent, taking into account other factors like smoking, drinking, diet and health problems like high blood pressure and obesity.

As many as 18 percent of U.S. adults regularly skip breakfast, according to federal estimates. So the study could be important news for many, Rimm said.

"It's a really simple message," he said. "Breakfast is an important meal."
