You may not need a technical knowledge on programming. While it is good and very necessary, try to build yourself towards the project management side. This way, you head and manage developers. Having a knowledge of the working principles of the code is very necessary to adapt to the industry.

So whichever way you choose to. I work in the IT industry and I don't have any coding knowledge. Learn more of Java, python, html or you can be a front end web developer. Most developers are back end developers making the front end developers scarce. Currently, we are needing a frond end developer and no one to be found now.

A good friend of mine, studied Biology at undergraduate level and ended up with a 2nd class lower. She immediately decided to take courses in Project Management. She later got a job in a pharmaceutical firm before moving to a telecoms company, where she worked her way through the ranks. Exactly. The point is that most graduates or youths have a skewed view of the real world out there. They only know about engineering, law, medicine, and pharmacy jobs.

Like you rightly said, a project manager in a pharmaceutical firm will earn more than a pharmacist in that firm. So if a physicist sees himself as a teacher, then such person will end up earning 30-50k and end up average in the society.

Nigerian's are not crying due to high rate of unemployed physics graduate but unemployed graduates across all disciplines.

You are studying one of the best course ever in the world, even in Nigeria, don't be discouraged and make sure you have either a 1st class or 2:1 out of the university then I can assure you, you are fit to work anywhere even in the oil company

I studied physics too and I graduated several years ago, I have been working in the Telecommunication company, I do a lot of things, I also have many friends who studied physics and are working in mtn, Etisalat and Glo......

all I need you to do is to be focus and determined and make sure you have a very good grade, just 1st class or 2:1 is enough

if you wish to choose telecommunication line just like I did then my advice is this

when you are serving (NYSC) register for CCNA go for the ccna lectures and write the exam if you pass then I can assure you, a job in any telecommunication company or even bank is certain

you can do CCNP, CWNA, CWNP ITIL and so on,

trust, you are very fine studying physics, you will be competing with electrical / electronics student

What do you expect when most comments come from unemployed or low earning people who are very comfortable earning below 80k.

What they do not know is that most NPOWER applicants are not physics graduates but those from the social sciences. Again, they are more unemployed engineering graduates than physics graduates. Most physics teachers in secondary schools are engineering graduates not even physics graduates.

Lovely post I must say. As a graduate from this great Citadel of Learning, I have been trying to schedule a time to visit Lautech in order to orientate present undergraduates. Physics as a course has a lot in common with Electrical & Electronic Engineering, a course I was blessed to study. I presently work with Huawei in Lagos and I must tell you telecommunications industry is always in need of graduates with experience in the field, especially in the Radio Frequency (RF) section. My advise to you and other undergraduates studying both Physics and EEE is to use both your SIWES and I.T periods to learn at least one of the following softwares used in Drive Test before your graduation, such as TEMS Investigation, Genex Probe, Map info. Knowledge of any of these, by God's grace, gives you an automatic job even before you go for service as this part of telecommunications really needs more hands. A senior colleague from Lautech that trained me is a graduate of Physics. To know what a Drive Test is, kindly use Google search engine. Physics is a good course.

It is not a must that you work as an engineer or physicists after your studies in the university. The pedagogy of learning is such that you become well trained such that you can apply what you have learned in physics to banking, IT industries, Oil and gas, etc. There are many courses like Project management, Business Analysis, Data Analysis, etc that has no direct relationship to courses being taught in the universities. These professional courses pays more than medicine and surgery, engineering, law, etc.

People should be taught to be versatile in learning such that they can adapt to different environments. Good radio presenters did not study mass communication and the list goes on.

I am not here to tell the OP anything about opportunities in Physics. He should go and make research on his own. That is why we are still backward in this country. We seek advice here and there and end up following nonsense. Thereafter we blame the government or village people. Why do we have internet? If the OP really wants to know whats up about physics, he should make research online on his own. If he finds what he really likes, then he can build a career around that area or a related field.

What is even laughable is the fact that most posts are made by low income earners. Physics graduates are SMART and those that know themselves will always excel. Just like other courses, they are dumb physics graduates too.

Listen, I am not hear to boast or whatsover. I finished an got a work as physics graduate 3 months after NYSC. I work and even earn more than an entry level Medicine and surgery graduate. I got my job without knowing anyone.

There's this one thing about a physics graduate which you guys fails to understand. Physics graduates are highly analytical and logical. This skill alone can get them any way and they are highly sought for especially in IT industry where I work.

Private school directors/owners are very wicked and can be likened to satan. Apart from the fact they make you teach from SS1 to SS3, sometimes, you will be a visiting teacher to Primary 3 students, they also pay peanut.

Very wicked, in villages, some private schools pay as low as N6k/month. While their principals are paid N20-25k/month.

The education ministry is yet to shine it's dead torchlight to private schools and see the ugly plight of teachers there. Things have gotten out of hand in private schools. The worst is that any corper that passed out is looking to teach in private school as he/she searches for a better offer.
