SaharaReporters has just received information from students living in Birnin Gwaritown in Kaduna State to the effect that heavily armed bandits took over the Police Station in the area and burnt it down after about two hours of gun battle with troops. The police station is completely razed in an attack that started at midnight, according to the source. Banks and other public buildings were reportedly bombed along with the Police Station. The source who claimed to have witnessed the attack said the bandits also planted Improvised Explosive Devices(IEDs) that exploded simultaneously in addition to sporadic gun shots. The source also said that the whole area was sealed by the unidentified gunmen whose number could not be ascertained because of they came in the dark. Several police officers and some of the bandits are believed to have died in the attack which lasted about two hours. “We are trapped, and under fear, we need military support to, if not there is no certainty on our lives. As I speak, they are still firing”, he said. In October, 2012, bandits invaded the town killing some 20 worshippers leaving a Mosque in an early morning raid in the area. Calls made to spokespersonsof the army and police were not returned as at the time of this report. http://saharareporters.com/news-page/breaking-news-gunmen-invade-birnin-gwari-township-kaduna-state-bomb-police-station-and-ban |

Confusion over Mikel suspension Confederation of African Football official here at the Rustenburg centre, Mr Emmanuel Maradas could not throw light on Mikel Obi’s likely suspension from the quarter-finals last night. Mikel has bagged two yellow cards and could miss the quarter-final tie against Coted’Ivoire, but Maradas had nodefinitive answer when he was asked to clarify. “CAF will meet tomorrow (today) and deliberate on all outstanding issues concerning cards and other matters,” Maradas, a well-known publisher of an African football magazine, said. “If it was just one yellow card, I’m sure he wouldn’t be suspended, but with two, I’m not so sure.” Mikel has become an important part of the Eagles set-up after a slow start in the first game. And the team will be keen to have him available. Link- http://www.completesportsnigeria.mobi/readNewsItem1.php?nid=2627 |

Two of the people that kidnapped Nollywood actress, Nkiruka Sylvanus, in Imo State, were former cattle traders from the Northern part of Nigeria, security officials have said. The leader of the gang that carried out the kidnap is from Imo State and was a police officer with the mobile police unit. The six suspects that carried out the kidnap were paraded at the State Security Service, SSS, Headquarters in Abuja onTuesday at a joint press briefing by the SSS and the police. Ms. Sylvanus, actress and aide to the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, was kidnapped on December 15 at about 7:30 p.m. alongside two men- Uche Okoliand Kenneth Okoli- at Nworie Street, Akanchawa roundaboutarea of Imo State by three gunmen. By SaharaReporters, New York SaharaReporters has obtained an audio interview of a man, identified as Mujhahedeen Muhammad Marwana, who claims to be the second-in-command to Boko Haram leader Imam Abubakar Shekau, conducted in Hausa by phone in Bauchi State, by a foreign journalist. In it, Marwana speaks authoritatively about meetings between members of his group and some top Northerners, including Governor Sule Lamido, former Minister of Defence Bello Halliru, and Sheik Dahiru Bauchi. The translation, into English, did not provide any context to those meetings. According to the source which made the tape available, the interview was broadcast yesterday, January 28, but it is unclear when it was conducted and where it was broadcast. Translated into English, the interview shows Marwana dispelling any possible dialogue with the militants because the government has allegedly killed 47 Boko Haram emissaries in dialogue efforts that have never seen the light of day. In the interview, Marwanna also explained Boko Haram’s predicament in Kano, stating that four principal members of their group are being “unjustly” held there and must first be released as a pre-condition for any future developments. He indicated that there are others also being held in Abuja, Maiduguri and other locations in the North. He told his interviewer: “Many people have called us for dialogue many times but the government is fooling itself, thinking they are clever but [are] deceiving themselves. They are insisting they don’t know us, it is false, we have met their representatives many times but because of their evil plan they kept denying [us] because of their greed and wickedness.” Marwana also reiterated that Boko Haram is following Allah’s instruction to serve him and that his group is not attacking anyone unjustly. He asked: “Before they attack us, have you ever see us attacking them and their cronies from the beginning? Even pressmen we have no problem with them except where there were some plots,” he said. Apparently on the subject of treachery on the part of the government, he recalled “the first meeting” following the execution of former Boko Haram leader Mohammed Yusuf in Maiduguri. “We were six in Shehu’s Palace,” he recalled. “From there we were 40 that met in Damaturu and only three of us survived. We went to Kaduna and met in Arewa House; of 11 of us, 10 were killed by special squad of security agencies around Tafa on Abuja way, with all these, who is a cheat and want trouble? We sat with Governor Sule Lamido, former minister of defence, Bello Halliru and Sheik Dahiru Bauchi, this is what we want our Muslim Ummah to know.” http://saharareporters.com/news-page/another-boko-haram-figure-speaks-ruling-out-dialogue-nigeria-gov%E2%80%99t |

Arsenal bid £8m for Villa(Times) but Man City want Barca striker to replace Balotelli (Mirror) Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 David Villa to Arsenal, or another big club in England is the transfer story that just won’t go away! Despite the fact that Arsene Wenger said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Liverpool game that “Barcelona don’t want to sell David Villa and have made it clear,” the Spanish striker still features heavily in the back pages on Wednesday. The Times get the ball rolling with the claim that ”Arsenal have tested the resolve of Barcelona by lodging a bid of about £8 million for David Villa.” Gary Jacob and Tony Barrett in The Times point to an Arsene Wenger quote from the same press conference, where the Arsenal boss said:”We could do with top quality, one more, but you have to, find him.” Leaving aside the fact that 8 million pounds is woefully short for a top striker, who Barcelona seem to want to keep, Arsenal look to have challengers for the signature of David Villa. The back of the Daily Mirror on Wednesday leads with the headline: “Bye Bye Mario, Buy Buy Villa!” Suggesting Manchester City will launch their own bid for David Villa. It seems most likely that DavidVilla will stay at Barcelona until the summer, expect plenty of transfer gossip between now and the end of the January transfer window though. |
Russian tycoon and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly a huge admirer of Everton boss David Moyes and is likely to be lining up a move for the Scottish manager to succeed his team’s interim boss Rafa Benitez at the end of this season. The Daily Mail reports that Abramovich has been speaking highly of Moyes, who has made rapid stridesat Everton since his arrivalat Goodison Park in 2002. Moyes has not only managed to keep his side in the Premier League amidst their financial woes but also consistently challenged for a spot in Europe, mostly though in the Europa League. The news comes as a big jolt to Toffees fans who willnot want their manager to leave at any cost. There isnothing concrete yet though as Abramovich plans a post Rafa strategy to try and get his side more amongst the trophies next season after having adisappointing campaign so far this season. One can more or less be certain about Benitez’s axing after this season as the Spaniard has done nothing to keep his job withrespect to results thus far,not to mention the scant regard he has among fans of the West London club, whom he rubbed the wrong way during his time at Liverpool. It will be interesting to see whether a conservative and principled man like Moyes will take charge of Chelsea next summer, should an offer come knocking, especially given the way Abramovich likes to take centre stage in his team’s matters at times both on and off the field. |

After several months of delays, criminal charges will be filed against the former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Education, Farouk Lawan, the prosecutor, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), has informed THISDAY. Lawan, who was also the Chairman of the House Ad Hoc Committee on the Monitoring of the Fuel Subsidy Scheme, had been accused by the Chairman of Zenon Oil and Gas Limited, Mr. Femi Otedola, of demanding and accepting a bribe of $620,000 to alter the report of the committee, in which Zenon had been indicted. Speaking with this newspaper on the phone, Awomolo said that the delay in filing the charges was caused by the need to do a thorough investigation and block all loopholes to make sure that the prosecution presents a water tight case in court. According to him, the police have since carried out further investigations and came up with additional materials that could assist the prosecutor in the case. He explained that Lawan would have his day in court but said that the state could not be pushed into rushing to court only to have the case dismissed for lack of adequate preparation. Awomolo also reacted to the request by Lagos lawyer, Mr. Festus Keyamo, to prosecute the case, saying: “The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, under the constitution and the law carries with it both national and international responsibilities with respect to prosecution of offenders. “It appears there is a grand plan by some people to secure for the accused person cheap judgment of acquittal, because once this frivolous private prosecution fails, the accused will be discharged and acquitted and be free forever. “Then they will turn round to blame the AGF who has been diligent in handling the case. “Why the sudden interest? First, he (Keyamo) does not have any record of investigation by the police. Besides, there is no such law as Section 129(1)(a) of the ICPC Act. Keyamo wants to frustrate the prosecution. He is making a deliberate effort to frustrate the prosecution of Lawan. “He is also making attempts to frustrate justice and blackmail the AGF. There is no basis for what he is doing. “The law has moved away from Keyamo’s standpoint. The police have done more work and by next week, we will go to court. “The AGF appreciates the public interest generated by this matter and assures Nigerians that in the next few days, the prosecution will begin. It will be done diligently and professionally. The delay is in the interest of justice. “For the AGF as a leader of the bar and a leader of cabinet, it is important for him to act most diligently, observing the rule of law and all international protocols relating to prosecution. “He is not to be seen as a persecutor but a prosecutor. A persecutor goes to the press to blackmail, intimidate and bring to disrepute the suspect who is presumed to be innocent under our law. “Whereas a prosecutor must ensure that there is proper investigation with verifiable facts and evidence on the record before proceeding to court. “The AGF will not react to the noise of the market in order to bring a Nigerian to court for crimes because a criminal allegation has various dimensions: the accused person, his life and personality, his family and relation and associates, the interest of the general public which is represented by law, and lastly, the integrity of the administration of the criminal justice. “All these factors must be considered before bringing an accused person to court.” Awomolo insisted that AGF would not play to the gallery, adding that a criminal investigation is not a frivolous thing. “It is also not an opportunity to play to the gallery,” he stressed. Following the expiration of the ultimatum to the police to charge Lawan, Keyamo had last Wednesday prepared a draft charge against Lawan. The draft charge, which was sent to the AGF, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), was accompanied by a letter requesting the AGF to indicate whether he was prepared to prosecute or not. He had attached to the criminal charge proof of evidence, a recording of a telephone conversation between Lawan and Otedola contained in a memory card wherein Lawan had allegedly solicited or asked for gratification to doctor his report, and appealed to Otedola to keep it secret. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/prosecutor-farouk-lawan-s-trial-starts-this-week/137676/ |
