ROSSIKE:

How exactly is anything going to be done to ''repair the damage done to the region'', when war, conflict, and kidnappings keep breaking out there

If the brainless foools can put down their weapons for at least 4 years, and then after that time, if nothing has been done, THEN they can fight.

But this idea of signing ceasefire agreements and then after 3 months or 6 months, you pick up guns because ''nothing has been done'' is just plain stuppid and ignorant.

Does it take 3 months or 6 months to develop a whole region?? How? Where?
I think that even in these six months, progress has been made. Its just a few greedy people down there causing all the problems and now the JTF is very rapidly wiping them out.

Politics / Lagos Doctors May Call Off Strikes by MShittu: 5:23pm On Nov 20, 2010

Lagos State doctors, under the aegis of Medical Guild, may, today, call off their three-month strike.
It was gathered that the congress of the doctors would deliberate on the concessions given by the state government regarding their Federal Government-approved consolidated salaries, otherwise known as CONMESS.
This is coming after the expanded executive of the guild, on Thursday agreed to suspend the strike, pending when the state government cleared some grey areas in their negotiation.

Mr. Richard Akinnola, an activist in the last two weeks, facilitated the negotiation.
While the doctors, as part of their demands, are still insisting on the recall of their former chairman, Dr Olaifa, who was sacked many months ago by the state government, sources close to the government said that would be a tall order, as the doctor has joined partisan politics on the platform of Peoples Democratic party(PDP).

The government source alleged political manipulation of the leadership of the doctors, adding: “No state government has invested heavily in the health sector like Lagos State in the past three years. Last year, the governor increased their salaries without promptings from the doctors, ordered 200 cars for them because of the uniqueness of their calling, yet he is being blackmailed over salary structure that was packaged by the Federal Government.”

Politics / Lagos Students Create A Fuel-less Power Generator! by MShittu: 4:46pm On Nov 20, 2010

Two students of Doregos Private Academy, Lagos, Olajumoke Adebayo and Eniola Adewale has invented a fueless power generator. The invention was showcased at the Pan-African Women Inventors & Innovators Network Symposium, Expo & Awards at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja.
The event titled Innovative Women with Innovative Solutions for Africa was witnessed by the minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, and Mrs Josephine Anenih., minister for Women Affairs, It was indeed a commemdation galore for the students as other youths were advised to emulate them.
The students both in SS3 and members of the Junior Engineers, Technicians & Scientists (JETS Club) said the idea was born out of a need to minimize the cost spent of the usage of fuel generators as an average amount of N10, 000 is spent on fuel weekly adding that their invention does not emit any toxic and poses no threat to human health.
According to them, the idea was conceived through the JETS club to which they belonged as coordinators. “We used magnetic flux to generate electricity which the conventional magnet cannot. It consists of a shaf fixed with eight neodymium magnets which rotates when an initial current is passed through the field coils. The electricity is then passed from the copper coil to a step-up transformer which steps up the power voltage from 32 volts to 200 volts to power the output of the generator”. They said.
The young stars noted that JETS club afforded them a vantage avenue to think, analyze and work on scientific research before embarking on the project based on their scientific knowledge that a generator can still exist without using fuel. They stated that it is possible to produce cheaper and more dependable source of electricity for both domestic and industrial use.
The invention the students admitted was not an easy scale through as they had to make several presentations and seminars on the project to the audience comprising their teachers and the school authority before they were finally selected to defend the significance of their project.
Both students hinted that they intend pursuing a career in Engineering in the near future, to develop a bigger generator that can power the whole school.” This is just a prototype to showcase our endowments and potentials.”
The materials used for the invention according to them are a locally fabricated step up transformer, capacitors with total capacity 400,000 uf, neodymium magnets, copper wires transistors battery, oscillators, bulbs and several other materials.
The coordinator Junior Engineers, Technicians & Scientists (JETS Club), of the academy, Mr Lawal Olaide noted that the problem of high cost usage of fuel generators and unemployment in the country coupled with the burning desires of the students to make something unusual was responsible for the feat. according to him, “the main objective of this project is to produce a generator that can produce cheap and sustainable electric power to solve the problem of power supply permanently in the country, adding that it is also of great importance as it does not emit any waste (toxic) products as with conventional generators”.
The Principal of the academy, Mr Jide Adebayo said the school is committed to its mission of creating a learning environment which maximizes individuals’ potentials to meet the challenges of education and life.

I do not support criminality and I also do not support a war in my backyard. This whole action is insincere.
There is insecurity in the north with boko haram killing people at will.

Why do we not have a permanent task force to hunt them down?

The reason is that there is oil in the creeks.
I thought that the JTF was up North as well . In fact, I read an artilce on allafrica.com that said that although the JTF had practically locked down both Bauchi and nother state (really can't remember now) Boko Haram members had made their way into Plateau state.
I'm thinking its just that news spreads more slowly up North.

Yes ooooooooooo, we did play a very important part in the war and managed to help introduce democracy to Liberia, but our soldiers' conduct is questionable. Some of them would rape everything in sight and up till today, some Nigerians go all the way to Liberia to sell drugs to the Liberian people who then get high off said drugs and commit numerous crimes.

Politics / Our Governors Are To Blame by MShittu: 4:31am On Nov 15, 2010
One thing I've noticed here on Nairaland is that we like to criticize our Federal Government for all our ills. The Nigerian presidential elections are, indeed, the most closely observed and the Nigerian Federal Government does possess a large amount of executive power, but what I believe is that our governors, state senators and LGA chairmen should be the ones to blame for our current problems. I believe that one only needs to look to states such as Edo and Lagos to see the kinds of positive changes good governors can make to an entire state's infrastructure and to states such as Jigawa, which the world bank recently lauded for economic reforms that make it extremely easy for individuals to set up and run small to medium sized companies in the state, stating that if Jigawa's reforms were initiated nationwise, Nigeria would be 52 places higher than it currently is on the World Bank's ease of doing business report (http://234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/Money/Business/5641887-147/odds_against_doing_business_in_nigeria.csp). While the presidency is an extremely important seat, I believe that we should begin to direct some of our focus to our state governors, as they possess the executive power to turn our country around for ever.

This news almost inevitably brings one to ask the question: Are these 'kidnappers' real kidnappers or a bunch of scapegoats? I think Osisikankwu would like us to believe the latter, but the Nigerian gov't seems positive that these arrests are legitimate ones.
Politics / 449 Kidnappers Arrested In 7 Weeks by MShittu: 6:41pm On Nov 14, 2010

ABA, Nigeria — Nigeria's special joint military force has arrested over 400 suspected kidnappers in four oil-producing states in the Niger Delta in under seven weeks, an army spokesman said on Sunday.
"From the start of our operation on September 28, 2010 to date, a total of 449 suspected kidnappers were arrested in different locations in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Imo and Rivers States," Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said in Aba.
The Joint Task Force (JTF) has transferred 95 suspects to the police and state security service agents for further investigation and possible prosecution, he said.
The JTF still has 183 suspects in custody while 171 others who were cleared after questioning have been freed, he said.
He said the special force -- set to fight kidnapping, attacks on oil workers and installations in the oil-rich Niger Delta region -- had managed to restore law and order to Aba city, the southeast region's main commercial city, after months of violence, kidnappings and other crimes.
Banks, finance houses, shops and schools were mostly closed at the height of the violence when armed gunmen, kidnappers, militants and other criminals laid siege to the city and the surrounding area.
The JTF recovered some 25 vehicles, assorted arms and ammunition from the arrested suspects, and destroyed many of their local arms manufacturing factories, said Musa, who also speaks for the force in the region.
A joint army and police operation on October 1 freed 15 pupils who were kidnapped from their bus four days earlier on the outskirts of Aba, located in Abia State.
"Within the first one month of our operation in Abia, we rescued 15 pupils of Aba international school, four female national youth corps members, and many other men and women kidnapped," Musa said.
The Nigerian military on Saturday warned armed gangs in the region that militants' camps would no longer be tolerated, with many of them already located and destroyed in recent weeks.
Kidnappings have turned into big business in the Niger Delta and southeast as abductors often demand ransoms from their victims or their families.

Politics / Militants Strike In Ph City! by MShittu: 3:45pm On Nov 14, 2010

LAGOS — Gunmen burst into a burial vigil outside Nigeria's oil city of Port Harcourt, firing shots and kidnapping four people, police spokesman Akin Fakorede said on Sunday.
"The incident occurred at 01:00 am on Saturday in Ihuaba community (outside Port Harcourt, capital of southern Rivers State) during a vigil for a burial. The gunmen shot sporadically and made away with four men", he said.
"Police have launched a manhunt for the kidnappers," said Fakorede.
Kidnappings and attacks on oil installations are rife in the oil-rich Niger Delta where Rivers State is located.
The Nigerian military on Saturday warned armed gangs in the region that militants' camps would no longer be tolerated, with many of them already located and destroyed in recent weeks.
"These people are criminals and will be treated as such," chief of defence staff, Air Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, said in a statement. Their camps in Niger Delta creeks "will no longer be tolerated," he said.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has carried out scores of attacks in the region in recent years.
It claimed responsibility for twin car bombings on independence day October 1 that killed at least 12 people, the first such attack in the capital Abuja.
The group claims to be fighting on behalf of local people in the deeply impoverished Niger Delta, but it has also been seen as an umbrella organisation for criminal gangs.

Politics / Boko Haram Kills Soldier! by MShittu: 3:41pm On Nov 14, 2010

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — A Nigerian soldier has been killed and another wounded in a suspected attack by a radical Muslim sect in northeastern Nigeria.
Borno state Police Commissioner Mohammed Abubakar on Sunday said the attack on the soldiers came early Saturday morning as the two men ate at a local restaurant. A witness told The Associated Press that the assailants fired a Kalashnikov rifle at the soldiers from a motorbike.
Authorities believe it is another attack by members of Boko Haram, a Muslim sect whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language. The group's members have emerged recently from hiding after starting a July 2009 riot, which led to a security crackdown that left 700 people dead.
Authorities accuse them of killing local officials in recent weeks.

ABUJA — The Nigerian military on Saturday warned armed gangs in oil-rich Niger Delta saying that it would not tolerate their criminal acts, including kidnappping and brigandage, and would clear out their camps.
"We have observed with concern some criminal acts within the past few days, by some people claiming to be militants," chief of defence staff, Air Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, said in a statement.
"We are all aware of the kidnappings, illegal boarding of oil rigs and other acts of brigandage that have been committed by these criminals, These people are criminals and will be treated as such," he said.
He said that many of these militants hide in camps in the Niger Delta creeks, adding that these camps "will no longer be tolerated."
Petirin warned all law abiding citizens who live around the camps to leave "immediately. Enough is enough".
"All effort will be made to assist those who may need to relocate temporarily until the clearing of these den of common criminals have been concluded," he also said.
The military have in the past weeks located and destroyed tens of militant camps.
A statement purporting to be from Nigeria's main militant group MEND on Friday named seven foreign hostages it said were taken in an offshore attack this week in southern Akwa Ibom State.
The statement also said the militants decided to release three French oil workers and a Thai national seized in September "owing to their generally poor state of health."
The seven foreign workers -- two Americans, two French, two Indonesians and one Canadian -- were captured when gunmen attacked a rig and support vessel off Nigeria on Monday.
The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has carried out scores of attacks in the region in recent years.
It also claimed responsibility for twin car bombings on independence day October 1 that killed at least 12 people, the first such attack in the capital Abuja.

Politics / Gej Loses Patience With Nd Militants! by MShittu: 5:09pm On Nov 13, 2010

Nov 13 (Reuters) - Nigeria's military warned on Saturday it would take action against armed gangs in the creeks of the oil-producing Niger Delta after a spate of recent kidnappings and other criminal acts.

Seven expatriate workers were kidnapped from an oil rig off the Niger Delta almost a week ago, while the home of President Goodluck Jonathan's main adviser on the region was attacked with explosives late on Thursday. [ID:nLDE6AB0L5] [ID:nLDE6AB0RL]

"We have observed with concern some criminal acts within the past few days by some people claiming to be militants , Many of these criminals are known to be hiding in camps within the creeks of the Niger Delta," Chief of Defence Staff Oluseyi Petinrin said in a statement.

"These camps will no longer be tolerated. To avoid any collateral damage, we are seizing this opportunity to instruct all law-abiding citizens who live around the vicinity of these camps to leave immediately," the statement said.

Any major offensive by the armed forces would be the first in the Niger Delta since an amnesty programme brokered by Jonathan began in August 2009. I think that if someone wants to make money off the electricity crisis in Nigeria, all that one needs to do is:
1- Build a factory
2- Import fsome solar panels
3- Use the solar panels to power the factory
4- Create solar panels in the factory
5- Sell them solar panels!!!!!!!!
