That information is wrong.

1 South Africa 49 million people
2 Egypt 84 million people
3 Algeria 34 million
4 Morocco 30 million
5 Nigeria over 150 million
6 Libya

Population does not mean economy power. China 1 billion people is less rich than the USA 300 million

Becomrich, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THAT ALGERIA AND MOROCCO HAVE GDPS HIGHER THAN THAT OF NIGERIA

this brings me back to the actual subject of the thread

i think the will be the first part of Nigeria to develop, and it's already being seen in Rivers which is miles ahead of the rest of the country in HDI, and i think it will be the least focused on social welfare programs because is a very un-igbo concept.

That's true, and the development of Nigeria's states is something that is quite commendable, but, without true federalism, resource control and federalized police forces, state development is bound to be limited.

To be more serious guys, what are WE doing to make a difference, to improve the situation or are we just going to wait for the government to do everything?? there are alot of NGO's in this sector but they lack funding, have WE helped them out??
during our NYSC days, did we teach them appropriately and implement the SEED of hard work and confidence in them??
little things like that can make a difference!!!(remember: a drop of water wil one day make an ocean).

That's one thing I don't like about Nigerians. We can talk, talk and talk until our mouths fall off, but when we get into the position to actually do something, to make a tangible change, we always seem to forget our people. Its kinda disappointing.

I dont think that there is extreme hunger as such in Nigeria. Yeah some people will eat very little for one day, but nobody really dies of starvation, do they?

Politics / Fg Trying To Ease Foreign Investment In The Mining Industry by MShittu: 8:25pm On Oct 18, 2010

Oct. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Nigeria is planning tax incentives and improvements to infrastructure in order to attract foreign investors to the country's mining industry, Mines Minister Musa Sada said.

The government "will offer a three-year tax holiday to new companies," Sada told reporters in the capital, Abuja, today. They will also cut the capital gains tax to 10 percent, from 20 percent and companies' profit tax to 30 percent, from 35 percent, he said.

Nigeria, Africa's top oil producer, has reserves of iron ore, gold and coal, among other minerals, according to the ministry's website. Foreign investment in the industry is part of the government's plan to boost revenue from other sources and cut its dependence on oil earnings.

Regulations on health, safety and the environmental impact of mining industries are being planned for next year, Sada said.

The West African nation is also planning to improve access roads to remote mines, he said.

Politics / Nigeria Won't Break Up - U.S.! by MShittu: 5:32pm On Oct 18, 2010

The United States of America (USA), at the weekend, denied that it believed that Nigeria would disintegrate in some years from now.

The new US Consular General to Nigeria, Mr Joseph D. Stafford, stated this on Friday, when he visited the Executive Director of an Ekiti State-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), New Initiative for Social Development, Mr. Abiodun Oyeleye, as part of his familiarisation tour of states of the country.

Stafford said it would amount to doomsday prediction for anybody to say that Nigeria would break or that its oil resources would dry up, adding that the country was strategic, not only to West Africa or the entire continent, but also the whole world.

He added that based on the belief of the USA in Nigeria, he cared, as new world power’s  Consular General to Nigeria and that was why he decided to familiarise himself with states of the country.

He said the United States government was putting in place measures to make accessibility to US visa less stressful, adding that the country was also strengthening bilateral relationships with Nigeria.

“It is doomsday prediction for anybody to say Nigeria will disintegrate. The US does not believe in that. In fact, we are strengthening bilateral relations with the country.

“Nigeria is highly important, not only to the West African sub-region and the entire continent, but also to the entire globe. We are interested in the Niger Delta and the overall security of Nigeria.

GEJ isnt that bad, but these days he just seems to be making a few mistakes. Like the bomb blasts for example. He keeps on going back and forth with 'MEND', attacking Dokpesi and Okah and its all just very confusing. And his inaction with Abia state. I mean, come on! Its as bd as it has always been. And the fact that he hasnt been prosecuting corrupt leaders. Who remembers what happened with the Halliburton case? I don't, I really don't.
But he is doing some good, somehow.

Business / Nigerian Business Ideas by MShittu: 5:30pm On Oct 09, 2010
I was thinking for a little while and came to the quite obvious realization that Nigerians really aren't all that entrepreneurial. I mean we keep complaining about how the gov't doesn't support us and stuff, when the reality is that we should be supporting ourselves. And, as such, I came up with a few kind of simple business ideas that I think might be very successful in this country of ours. I'm too young to do these, and I'm not in Nigeria, but I think that these can be really successful. Please note, however, that these aren't get-rich-quick schemes, but, rather, are ideas that one could follow to attain a rather significant amount of money over a period of time that might be about two to five years

No. 1
I guess some of you remember Moh'd bah Abba's cooling pots. Y'know, the one that he recieved the rolex prize for. Somebody could use that idea, but on a much larger scale, helping the 70% of Nigeria's population with jobs in agriculture while getting some serious money.

Here are the statistics that I have in my head at the moment
Nigeria is a country of about 150 million, and 70% of those 150 million, 105 million, have jobs in agriculture. Now Moh'd Bah Abba sells those pots of his at 40 cents each, and if somebody can get a loan from a bank or something, one can make those pots, which in reality, dont cost that much to make, I guess, and sell them, at abut half a dollar a piece, to Nigeria's agricultural society. If one is successful, one can expect to get fifty-two million five hundred thousand dollars back. And considering that each agricultural worker is gna need about two, or maybe even more, one can expect to become a centi-billionaire in a rather short amount of time!

No. 2
So now you're a centi-millionaire, and you want more money. Go back to the agric industry. Look at the rather deplorable condition of Nigerian farms, then look at the Shonga farms in Kwara. Start making some Shonga farms all over the nation, working with farmers and forming formal arrangements with them to build those farms and take some of the resulting profit. If we can have modernized farms in the country, we can expect food production to increase rapidly, meaning that we can export food to our African neighbors. MORE CASH.

A good idea here is hydroponics, a system through which plants are grown in nutrient an water solution instead of soil. Hydroponically grown plants have been proven to grow at rates much faster than conventional plant growth methods, and also use less water (check attached file). SO they can be quite useful

No 3.
So you're very quickly approaching your first billion. You're fat and rich, and you want more. What do you do? Reform the Markets.
I hate Nigerian markets. Those fly-plagued stalls in the middle of roads absolutely and completely suck, as there's much too much disorganization and waste in 'em. There's a solution though. Indoor markets. With gens, air-conditioning, waste-bins and toilets. You cant take suya indoors, so have some small outposts around the larger market complex that sell suya!
And do so all over Nigeria!!!!
$$$$$$$$$$$ rooooollllls in.
No 4.
3 billion USD (hypothetically). And you need to expand. Start decreasing business costs, and do so with electricity.
It has been estimated that about 30% of all nigerian business costs stems from bad electricity. So you can save costs and save money through the creation of private power companies that tend to homes, businesses and the like all over the nation. Establish yourself as a philanthropist by decreasing prices in rural and poorer areas!

No 5.
You dont want Nigeria to fail, do you? So do more as a philanthropist. Sponsor exceptional Nigerian students and send them abroad to educate themselves. Create low-cost, quality private schools EVERYWHERE! See how your market base increases!

Note: If you're going to export, export globally, and never import, because the country has too many raw materials for you to do so.
Please comment and try (if you can) to carry these ideas out!!!!!
We need to succeed!

Politics / Orji Uzor Kalu Declares For Presidency! by MShittu: 8:51pm On Oct 07, 2010
Abuja — Amidst mounting political intrigues foreshadowing the 2011 presidential election, former governor of Abia State, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu entered the fray yesterday, declaring that he will run for the top job under the platform of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).

In the unfolding presidential scenario which has pitched the north against the south, Kalu's entry is seen to have opened a significant third front and also represents the first definitive voice from the South-east zone to challenge for the presidency ahead of 2011.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday, Kalu said he had the best credential of all the aspirants jostling for the plum job, adding that he was running to represent the oppressed people of Nigeria and the deprived and marginalized Igbo people living in Onitsha, Aba, Enugu, Ebonyi and all parts of Nigeria who are still feeling that the civil war has not formally ended going by their alienation in the national scheme of things.

"Nobody has thought that in 20 years since the relocation of the seat of power from Dodan Barracks, Lagos to Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, no Igbo man has lived in either the upper or the lower level. Is that justice?', he asked rhetorically. 'We are the salt of the nation. When you go to anywhere from Birnin Kebbi to Nembe; that is, from Sahara desert to Atlantic ocean, you will see canoes and the people you see living there are Igbos. We are the salt of the nation. We are the only people who go to one part of the nation and we start building our houses and make that place our home. So, why don't you make us president? I ask this question as a matter right; that it is our right today to produce the president of this country."

Kalu said given his pedigree as a successful entrepreneur, he has what it takes to turn the poverty of the country to posterity. His words: "Everybody just wants to be president and they have no idea of what it takes to be a president. I am a Nigerian Chief Executive Officer (CEO). I see myself as a CEO.

Politics / Boko Haram Kills Anpp Leader In Borno State by MShittu: 5:13pm On Oct 07, 2010
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Members of a radical Muslim sect shot and killed a political leader in northern Nigeria, the latest attack by a group that engineered a massive prison break last month, a police commissioner said Thursday.
Police commissioner Ibrahim Abdu told The Associated Press that investigators believe members of the feared Boko Haram sect shot and killed Awana Ngala, the leader of the state's ruling All Nigeria People's Party. The attack came only three hours after suspected group members shot two security agents stationed Wednesday night outside the home of the speaker of Borno state's House of Assembly.
Ngala's killing could mark the 11th slaying by the Boko Haram sect in recent weeks. The group has lately been responsible for a rash of killings committed by Kalashnikov-carrying men riding motorcycle taxis, and Ngala's death fits that profile.
Many of the killings targeted those who testified against group members in open court after a 2009 riot that sparked a security crackdown that left more than 700 people dead.
Abdu said no arrests have been made.
"We have intensified our investigations on the serial attacks and killings," Abdu said.
Boko Haram — which means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language — has campaigned for the implementation of strict Shariah law. Nigeria, a nation of 150 million people, is divided between the Christian-dominated south and the Muslim-held north. A dozen states across Nigeria's north already have Shariah law in place, though the area remains under the control of secular state governments.
In recent months, rumors about the group rearming have spread throughout northern Nigeria, though its former leader died in police custody after the 2009 riot in what human rights activists described as an extrajudicial killing. A video recording released in late June showed a Boko Haram leader calling for new violence as the one-year anniversary of their attack neared.
In September, the sect launched a coordinated attack on a federal prison in Bauchi that held many of its followers arrested following last year's riot. The raid freed about 750 prisoners — many of whom were members of the sect that still remain at large.

Politics / Re: Igbo Most Marginalised by MShittu: 7:09pm On Oct 02, 2010
I don't think that you can blame the FG for the marginalization of anybody, as this is a FEDERAL republic. The states should be like countries, and should empower their own people, and LGAs should do the same, I think that its just a general lack of incompetence in our leadership that leaves certain individuals feeling that way, as if the North was able to turn to sharia law, then every other state should be able to change any aspect of themselves that they wish to, as long as they stick to being part of Nigeria.

Lets put it this way. You are upset with your dad and started acting rudely and being destructive.
You have already assumed the kind of hard response your dad would come up with and you are prepared for it. But instead of calling you a bad son, your dad says you are a good boy and you only just missed your way a bit. Whatever anger that may be boiling inside you would just melt away. The bible says a soft answer melt great wrath.

But the thing is Goodluck didn't do that. He just went all out and said 'They didn't do it'. It would have been better if he had said 'We will discuss this matter with them and punish the individuals responsible for this atrocity'. But he gave them the green light and now they have virtually been given permission to go around bombing everywhere they feel like just because they know GEJ wont react positively.

Politics / Re: Nigeria At 50: We Should Decentralise Powers – Ibb ! by MShittu: 6:54pm On Oct 02, 2010
I don't say this very often, but the old man knows what he's saying. All this talk about tribal marginalization could be prevented if states have the autonomy that they're supposed to have. The thing is that the federal government should have no say in defining state laws, and I don't think they do, as the North sharia-ized itself without any external interference, and if they could undergo such radical change, all other states can as well. So the issue of power decentralization should be an intra-state one rather than a national one, and if the peoples of a state feel marginalized, they should look to their own LGAs and State gov'ts before they start criticizing the FG.
