Two times prior, I had deliberately missed my flight cos the return was way too early in the morning and I couldn't be bothered. I was flying with United and I knew they always operate multiple flights from Houston, so I wasn't bothered. The last time I did it, It nearly backfired As usual, we booked an early morning ticket cos it was cheaper and I was still snoozing when my flight was taking off. Okay oo, I go airport, na so I jam Asian at the ticketing counter. And Asian ladies ehn She refused pointblank, even after I don cook my regular story and even complimented her horrible wristwatch Say the most she can do I put me on a waitlist oo

Okay, she put me on a waitlist and I went to the gate to wait. 6 hours at Dallas Fort Worth isn't a good experience , I dey monitor the board and saw my name as number one on waitlist. Cool. Flight came and the normal people boarded.. something just made me glance at the board and I saw my name on number 6 on the waitlist and another Asian at the check-in counter had done some miracles and checked in 5 people who were below me on the waitlist and pushed me to number 6. Trust Naija girl, see shouting for the woman. I'm sure the lady must have been scared I might start shoting or something. Jejely, she looked for a seat(extra legroom seat with blankets and screens o) for me and allow me go. See speed I vamoozed before she changed her mind.

That one teach me lesson, but e no mean say I no go miss my flight again. I'm a serial offender I'm still waiting for the day I will miss my flight and they will upgrade me to first class on the next flight. It's gon be epic! Enough booze and all the perks of flying first class


I have also been stranded in DC before because KLM delayed my flight from Amsterdam and I had missed my connecting flight from DC. I spent the night in Dulles, in the airport lounge and it was damn cold. It was later that I realized I should have gone back to the KLM counter and demanded they put me in a hotel and pay f or my flight the next morning

He doesn't have anything against those who have lived outside Nigeria for an extended period of time, and he even gave an illustration of his cousin who has lived in America for a greater part of his life and as such has two accents. The Op's grouse is with those who have never travelled abroad, or perhaps stayed abroad for a short period, yet speak with the contrived accents.

No I didn't. He talked about those that lived abroad for a few and dumped their Nigerian accents and also those that didn't stay long enough to have acquired the accent. He also mentioned those who haven't been outside of Africa

A lot can be said about the accent thing, but it is what is it. If you live outside Nigeria for a couple of years, your accent and pronunciation are bound to change but I won't change completely except you migrated at an earlier age (sage 16years), anything after that, your vocal cords are fully developed and you can't change your accent completely.

At least that's understandable. What about OAPs in Nigeria who haven't stepped out of Nigeria yet they speak through their noses??! But cut people who have lived outside of Nigeria some slack OP. The accent is bound to change definitely. If not completely but partially. I for one can switch between the Nigerian Accent and the American Accent easily. My American accent isn't flawless but it is definetely different from the Nigerian. Why do I have two accents? Well try speaking on the phone to an American with your Nigerian accent and goodluck trying to get him to understand you. Or you could try instructing a room full of undergrads in school with your Nigerian accent. You can't even get them to stop telling you to repeat yourself despite the fact that you're speaking as clearly and as slowly as possible. Some of those kids are still brats.

So Mr OP, there's absolutely nothing wrong in having two accents. Your sounding insecure or even resenting of the accent. Your wife and relatives probably lived among fellow Nigerians which is why they retained their accents. If they had lived in a white dominated state or community or even Akata dominated they will speak like them too. I chose to speak like an American but that doesn't mean I can blow your head off in Yoruba, typical of the Ibadan girl that I am
