naijalander:It's not a matter of choice. Its a fact. Also india has more English speakers than either US or UK. So now the number of English speakers is a point of comparison ?

Meanwhile : Polio Rears Its Head Again In Africa Listen· 2:25 2:25 Queue Download Embed Transcript Google+ August 12, 201611:20 AM ET Heard on All Things Considered Jason Beaubien 2010 JASON BEAUBIEN Enlarge this image Ado Ibrahim carries his son Aminu through a village in northern Nigeria. Aminu was paralyzed by polio in 2012. David P. Gilkey/NPR Health officials in Nigeria are gearing up for a massive emergency polio immunization drive after two children were paralyzed by the disease. The two new polio cases in Nigeria are the first detected on the African continent in more than two years. Nigerian health officials plan to vaccinate nearly 5 million kids across the northeast of the country in an effort to contain this latest outbreak. Next Year Could Mark The End Of Polio GOATS AND SODA Next Year Could Mark The End Of Polio The re-emergence of polio in Nigeria is a major setback for global efforts to eradicate the disease. Prior to this week, the polio virus appeared to be on the verge of defeat: Afghanistan and Pakistan were the only countries reporting ongoing transmission of the virus. Including these two children who've been paralyzed in Nigeria, there've been only 21 polio cases reported anywhere in the world this year. The two Nigerian cases were found in the volatile northeastern state of Borno along the border with Chad. The area is a stronghold of Boko Haram, which has made routine immunization drives difficult. The terror group has publicly denounced the vaccination campaigns as a Western plot, killed immunizers and made it difficult for government health officials to even enter some parts of the country. Nigeria's health minister, Isaac Adewole, issued a statement saying that the cases were only detected because of a military offensive against the militant Islamist group. "The discovery and confirmation of the outbreak was as a result of strengthened surveillance due to improved accessibility which has been made possible by the recent military action in liberating more communities in the North-Eastern part of the country," according to the statement. Adewole added, "Our overriding priority right now is to rapidly boost immunity in the affected areas to ensure that no more children are affected by this terrible disease." The World Health Organization has also vowed to pour resources into Nigeria to try to make sure the virus is contained in the Nigeria/Chad border region and doesn't regain a foothold in Africa. Nigeria has been the Achilles' heel of polio eradication in Africa in the past. A decade and a half ago, religious leaders in some parts of Nigeria actively denounced polio vaccination as part of a Western plot to sterilize Muslim children. Even as other nations on the continent wiped out polio, Nigeria served as reservoir where the virus survived, sparking outbreaks throughout West Africa as travelers moved throughout the region. Just four years ago, Nigeria accounted for more than half of all the polio cases reported worldwide — 122 of the 223 global cases in 2012. Up until this week it appeared that Nigeria had successfully eliminated polio and was on track to be declared polio-free by the WHO next summer. It takes three years without a case to be eligible for the designation. UNICEF, which has been one of the lead agencies fighting polio in Nigeria, vowed to redouble efforts in the region and "not stop until we reach every child with polio vaccination." http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2016/08/12/489762952/polio-rears-its-head-again-in-africa |
naijalander:Why do / did you choose to live in Nairobi ? There are certainly plenty more better places in Africa with fewer idiots speaking with more acceptable (to you) accents such as Khartoum /Bangui /Mogadishu /Luanda /Kinshasa /Kampala etc etc. Why Nairobi? |
Bifwoli:Not only that, they very proudly stock water melons grown in South Africa. Where is the sense or pride in that? Let Nakumatt or Tuskys try that in Kenya and they will see a backlash like never before ! You forgot to add that those refineries are epileptic at best they now have to import fuel from Ghana. https://www.naij.com/998615-ghana-begins-fuel-exports-top-west-africa-countries-including-nigeria.html How does someone get the effrontery to lie they have "hundreds " of refineries, knowing full well that queuing for petrol is a time honoured tradition in 9ja, talk less of the sheer capital expenditure it would entail. Does he think we are daft? |
DriveByKiller:I must admit i am completely unaware of recent instability / civil war in Tanzania. Please enlighten me, gugu no be my friend today. |
Muafrika2:Don't waste your time trying to prove jack to a Nigerian who thinks everything African must also be Nigerian. Or in his masters language. We kenyans love to listen t our gospel tunes in african languages. For me : Xtine Shusho and Gloria Muliro. |
DriveByKiller:useless wannabe. Yuck. Go get stoned, its free as air. |
DriveByKiller:We are not 25 million people but 45 million you insecure simian. So where did you think numbers take you, abi? We see your kind all the time, its high time you get some factual sh1t in your head. |
LeSudAfricaine:sawubonani! |
naijalander:Travel is good if you know what to do with it. If i can't go to the mountain, the mountain must come to me, hence my participation in this and many other online fora. I wish God to add to my days and grant me the privilege of seeing your country. I want a chance to see the world, its people and learn from them. Many kenyans are labouring hard here on NL to present a fair picture of their country while you are busy steeped in unhelpful and ridiculous stereotypes about it, despite living there for 10 years as you say. We were hoping that the discussion would take a path unencumbered by prejudice and innuendo and focusing on factual information as opposed to an (biased) individual's opinion or experience that can never stand up to scrutiny. Please present us with reasoned debate and not knee jerk responses. It must be frustrating to be somewhere people have a 1 dimensional view of you, ignoring your personal attributes in favour of a generalization about you, clearly diminishing your worth. Such is life. Maybe now you understand how kenyans abroad feel when they are subjected to the tired skinny marathoner stereotype when 90% of us completely suck at it and for most of us, the only running we do is to improve our own lives. As for the drug dealer thing, am sorry but experience has proven that a disproportionate number of you happen to do these things when a guest in another country. Weed out the culture at home first. |
Coldplay89:The term "bantu" is a linguistic identifier not a racial one. Just the same way Germanic peoples includes english, german, dutch, danes, swedes etc Bantu includes groups from Cameroon to Kenya and all countries to the south of an imaginary line between those two countries. Take out a map of Africa and familiarize yourself with africa and its people. Also, there are very many dark skinned bantus as well as light skinned ones and all shades in between. There is no one typical bantu look or shade of skin colour. |
naijalander:i have simple question to ask : if we are such a shitty con3 to you, and we speak with shitty accents, why do you live amongst us? Why cant you go to Bangui or Khartoum or N'Djamena? Why do you choose nairobi? |
Fidha254:We all appreciate the big role 9ja troops played to end the BS in Liberia and SLeone. He should spare us the crap he is spewing about 9ja ending the more famous and more vicious Angolan civil war.The actors and their role in ending hostilities there is widely documented, he has the balls to tell a yellow bellied lie about 9ja role in it. The losing side were by all accounts a mean fighting force better than many national armies and only a major power could dare intervene in that arena. He better get real. |
Obas101:9ja people have a bad habit of trolling and snooping around the internet for the silliest of things. They even take screenshots of random kenyans on FB then have the effrontery to say WE are seeking attention. I mean WTF!! I guess it's you guys are idle and want to drive traffic up on your side and not the other way round. What's with y'all folks, chillax and mind your bizness just like kenyans are doing. Jeez!! |
Coldplay89:First things first. This gal is NOT a celebrity in Kenya. She happens to be well known amongst denizens of the social media and virtual world in Kenya, for nothing other than errm. ....her ample proportions. They call it yarnsh in 9ja if am not wrong. Well known, perhaps, but only to people who think that someone's posterior is newsworthy. If i understand your meaning of "black" - which i take to mean mahogany, obsidian or other similar dark skin tone- then no, not all kenyans are the same. And if you mean the racial sense of the word - taken to mean person of African descent - then yes, all african kenyans are blacks as well. And yes Kenya has several non African descent minorities such as Desis(people with origins in South asian sub continent ), whites(i have met very very few) and arabo-Swahili groups with very mixed parentage ( i have lived in Mombasa ) who predate even Kenya as an entity. All of them are kenyans. The different groups that make up Kenya / kenyans are the descendants of various groups, that have difference in phenotype as well as genotype (physical and genetic make up) hence the different shades of skin color that black kenyan people come in. You folks see kenyan runners winning races and say oh! see these " "black" people o running like gazelles. Little do they know they overwhelmingly come from one ethnicity in the country. Indeed they happen to be quite dark and lanky and we celebrate them because they are us. I say this because i have physically observed alot of people from 9ja do this and i immediately register that you folks dislike darker skinned africans and are inclined to diminish their worth because you are just projecting passed down prejudices. Change this dirty mindset, please. O the side of ethnic makeup of Kenya, you have it mostly right. Bantus, nilotes and cushites are the three main African races present in Kenya. You did not factor centuries of admixtures into your thinking, though. You have explicitly stated that black and bantu are mutually exclusive, by saying zimbos, angolans, rwandans, south africans etc cannot be black because they are predominantly bantu countries . WTF!!!!!! Are you a real person!!! I need a stiff drink. very stiff. |

lennymutai:yes, thanks |
naijalander:Kenya borrows on international finance markets to fund major infrastructure projects. They can do so because of their credit ratings from S&P and other agencies. Government spending is virtually fully internally generated - Kenya revenue authority raises more than its counterpart. We are 1/4 your pop,40% of land mass in km2 but with more than the giant in terms of revenue raised. How??! |
naijalander:Someone very close to me is in the dairy industry in Kenya. I see her work all the time and learn alot from her. As far as dairying is concerned, i can assure you the giant is waaaay behind ordinary kenya. Most of your powdered milk which is abomination to kenyans, is from Holland /Denmark /new Zealand imports. Are you aware Dangote has plans for a dairy plant in Kenya to export to 9ja as powdered milk? Kenya dairy industry is much much much larger than almost all African countries, they come to learn from us. It accounts for some 3.5-4% of GDP. Did you know that? There is a nigerian from agric section, i forget his name, he is a balanced individual and in the agricultural industry living here in kenya. He can expound on this better than me. |
NairobiWalker:a sad and annoying assumption from 9ja that they lead in everything in Africa when the indisputable facts suggest they are mostly in the middle or bottom percentiles on most indices of things. Imagine importing refined petroleum in an oil producing country. Its like Saudi importing petrol, lolest |
naijalander:Incorrect. The truth is that dairy industry is virtually non existent and milk(powdered) is imported. even toothpicks are imported |
naijalander:Does the giant produce more fresh milk than ordinary kenya? Ps. Your country still imports rice making Indonesian and Thai farmers very rich. |
Fidha254:Dammit!! Statistics are such a cold science |
naijalander:A small and ordinary country which only discovered crude oil less than 5 years ago is able to raise more government revenue than the giant. |
naijalander:And yet "small " and "ordinary " Kenya has a gov budget that exceeds that of the giant. How is that even possible? |
naijalander:And why do you think all that kenyans do all day long is run marathons? Btw am a very bulky kenyan : i played tough contact sports in my 20s. There goes your stupid stereotype of all kenyans being skinny. Most nigerians are efffing ignorant about other African countries such that when they land there its kinda a shock to their system. I don't hate you people, but a large % of the ones you meet in Nairobi are full of themselves, and are rude to locals. What is bringing you lot over here in large numbers Isnt 9ja the "big brother " aka "giant of Africa " lolest. We are not paradise, but we a certainly not hell. |
naijalander:A proud, self assertive and productive kenyan will not bend his knee upon sight of you. You seem to have expected them to do that while living amogst us. Sorry. Your people have built for themselves a nasty reputation that precedes them wherever they go. 90% of the time it happens to be spot on. Remember that. |
nivlark254:His type are into shady dealings |
Bifwoli:Na bado hajatembea eldy, ksm, kisii, meru etc etc na anasema ameishi kwetu miaka 10. Liar mkubwa na mshenzi hapendi lafudhi zetu, as if ya kwao ndio poa(loool!!). Mimi hawa wasee na dharau zao za 50 cts wanatuboa sanaaa hadi kero. |
