I usually find the 'garri' comments irritating, inappropriate and irrelevant to the topic being discussed but i won't go as far as to call them terrorists. At other times, I actually find the comments quite amusing .

Ignore the garri people and they'll soon stop - though hopefully they wont move on to another stupid word/comment.

@Kobojunkie, you have very strong views on this and I admire that. Unfortunately, a lot of people (not just in Nigeria) have a strong desire for a male child and will go to any lengths to get one. However, as you say, they should think carefully before acting and also face up to the consequences rather than 'run away'.

Thanks Coogar...you have made your point very clear and will not back down; even when its clear that you're wrong. In this case, I will hold to what I know...sorry, I'm sure i'm the only one not convinced that ovary and ovum are the same thing. In fact, by your logic, we can say that the scrotum fertilises the ovary abi?. I'm sure intelligent people will take your word for it or better still, do some research and decide for themselves. coogar: the ovary chooses what fertilises it. the theory that the spermhead that wins the race to the ovary fertilises it is false. in actual fact, millions of spermheads get to the ovary at the same time and the ovaries assess what each has got and it carefully chooses what is compatible with it!

It is obvious that you are talking rubbish... last time I checked the ovum (egg) not the ovary is what is fertilised. The ovary is where the ovum is produced and fertilisation takes place after the ovum has been released from the ovary...please don't come here to broadcast your ....

BBC reporters have seen a cached version of the site and used the details to contact former agents of the State Security Service (SSS). "The publication has put me in danger," one former agent said. The agents contacted by the BBC said they had not been officially told about the leak.

The information published includes names, ID numbers, bank details and addresses. Next to the personal records was the comment: "We still have more to kill in the SSS." A previous posting reportedly carried a threat from Boko Haram, which has killed hundreds of people in a series of attacks over the past three years...

Well, I'll tell you what I think... parents can secure the lineage by making sure that the children are given a good platform/ foundation in life. A disciplined and well educated daughter who achieves greatness in life is better than a useless, druggie, illiterate, good-for-nothing son who will bring shame to the family. People should stop praying for a particular sex but rather pray that their child(ren) will be pillars in society, responsible and God-fearing, bringing pride to the family.

yeah...just read this as well and it sad that legitimate students will get caught up in this. The last paragraph of the article reads.... As general secretary Sally Hunt said: "No matter how this is dressed up, the damaging message that the UK deports foreign students studying at UK universities will reach all corners of the globe."... and this is true. How many people will want to study in a country where you can be kicked out at any time? I hope Nigerian Universities can take advantage of this and improve the quality of their services so that more Nigerians will study at home, and at the same time, attract foreign students (not the usual ones from Niger or togo!).

urban legend! The origin of the word picnic has nothing to do with slavery, it is derived from french 'pique nique' which describes outdoor meals usually eaten during hunting parties.

I'm not here to support white people, but I do not support bigotry or prejudice from anybody, be they white or black. As much as you may claim that 'white people dont love you', many black people do not like whites- as many comments here on NL show, so we have two sides to the coin and each side believes it is justified. Right now, Nigerians need to unite and work together to build a better community/ nation for future generation (your children, nephews and neices)- attacking each other online or through boko haram is not it. As we all know, a single broom stick/twig is easily broken but a bunch of sticks/twigs is more difficult to break. It is up to each host nation to decide how, who and what it includes in the ceremony and there will always be mixed reviews...when Nigeria gets the chance to host a major event, then you guys will get a chance to show the world how it's done. 'Till then, please try to support Brazil because this is the first time the Olympics will be held in South America... my hope is that Africa gets it's chance soon.

Life in Europe is very tough for illegal immigrants....I pity these cameroonians (if the story is true) because they'll be deported when they're caught or spend the rest of their lives running from the law. The wise ones should return home asap or make sure that they send their earnings back home and do not accumulate assets in Europe because deportees do not get the chance to pack their kaya.

Nlanders please try to get rid of the prejudice that is hindering logical and rational discussions on this site. Nlanders in Nigeria, not every positive comment about life outside of Nigeria is meant as criticism of Nigeria. Nlanders living outside of Nigeria, Nigeria is a developing country and things are not as bad as they were when you left home, things are getting better....

...anyway back to the point of this post.

Has anyone asked these retailers why they refuse to ship to Nigeria? Many of us have assumed that they do so out of prejudice, but maybe it's simply business reasons- e.g.they've contracted out their delivery services. Many of these retailers cannnot or are not willing to set up distribution offices in every country of the world. They can however, outsource distribution, but this means that they are restricted to/ by the capacities of the contractor. So if the courier does not already ship to Nigeria, this might cause probs especially if it has to incur more costs to ship to Nija (due to customs wahala, paying someone to track the package 24/7, etc), this will increase their charges to the retailer. The question then is, what is the value of sales to Nigeria and is it enough to offset the extra costs. Remember that these companies are there to make profit and if the sales to Nigeria is large enough for a decent profit margin, Nigeria's reputation (whatever that may be) cannot stop them from delivering to Nigeria.

Next time a retailer says no, please ask why... so that we can work at finding a solution.

Interesting topic...I've actually had a similar experience and I can honestly say it wasn't the best date I've ever been on. It was difficult to relax as I desperately tried to remember the relevant etiquette rules ( the right cutlery to use per course if you've got a set of 3 fork, spoon and knife; 2 wineglasses, etc). I don't eat much so portion size wasn't an issue... Anyway, as etiquette demanded, I offered to pay for my half of the bill but he refused so I said, the next one's on me -if you still want to ''hang out''. Obviously during the meal, we'd discussed what type of food we like and where we go to eat out. I slyly told him I prefered a few cheap(er) restaurants. So ofcourse when I offered to pay next time, I knew very well that it'll be in a place that I could afford(student no get plenty money). This is exactly what happened and by the end of the second date, I was no worse off than if I'd paid half on a cheaper first date and half again at the second date. And now we've more or less settled into a 'routine' if you take me out, you pay; if I take him out, I pay (though he usually ends up paying- because, as he says, 'he's the man and should be the provider'.

Michael Phelps has just won his 19th Olympic medal (15th olympic gold medal) as he swam the last leg of the 4 by 200 freestyle swimming relay at the London 2012 Olympics. He won 6 gold and 2 bronze in Athens 2004 and 8 gold in Beijing 2008 but so far has only won 2 silver and 1 gold at the current olympics.

Phelps overtakes Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina who won 18 medals in total between 1956 and 1964. He (Phelps) has previously been compared to olympic greats like Mark Spitz (swimming- won 9 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in total) and Carl Lewis (track and field- won 9 gold and 1 silver in total).

Phelps has now won more medals at the olympics than anyone else since 1894. It's anyone's guess when and where Phelps record will be broken.

I personally do not blame the girl for wanting to study.

First, this guy likes young girls so if she marries him now, it is almost certain that in a few years time, this girl will be outside the age group that he is attracted to and he will most likely dump her. Even if he sends her to uni, it may be this same guy, rather than the girl, who decides to end things- because he's found a new toy.

Second- many guys come on Nland and complain about girls sucking them dry. This girl wants a degree and I will presume that she wants to have a good chance of getting a job and generating some income. What is wrong with that? If things don't work out between her and Highbros, at least she will might have a career.

'Akotileta'... this is a yoruba description of someone who strips the family of its wealth/property and sells it on. This is what is happening in Nigeria today. The country's wealth is syphoned off to other countries where it is put to good use for the benefit of its citizens. The little wealth that remains in Nigeria is exploited by foreigners (particularly asians) whose actions are not properly regulated because they've cunningly settled the relevant people! In the words of Christ, 'it is not right to give the childrens' food to the dog'! I only hope that one day, we will go beyond talking and blaming 'polititians' to doing something about it... I think in terms of creativity and content London has it but in terms of execution and showmanship, Beijing wins. I know for sure that what was shown last night was not the best of British...last night, the good bits were brilliant and the bad bits were awful. The Brits forgot this was a global show and failed to use the well known icons that people recognise as british. Also, the good things they remembered, they failed to showcase properly e.g. shakespeare, the suffragets (fought for women's right to vote), focus on health and welfare would have been better portrayed by the Redcross.... I like the tribute to the fallen soldiers around the world (love the whistling as this added a bit of poignancy) and the tribute to the dead (though I thought Leona Lewis would have sung the hymn better). The forging of the rings and the lighting of the cauldron were the best bits and justifiably so as these are the two parts that people focus on the most at any opening ceremony.

People need to remember that civilisations rise and fall...persia, rome, etc...so all this talk about Britain and US fading away is just reality...mind you I said fading not failing. Even China was once a great civilisation that was overtaken by the west and is only just picking itself back up. Countries rise and fall, which one is Nigeria doing How many of you critics can envisage a time when Nigeria can put up a show that's even half as good as last night's? in 2020? 2024? when? How many King/Emir's palaces will get airtime? which of the globally recognised great Nigerian sportsman will light the cauldron? Will we do it without any foreign consultant's help? ...Please look to your own country and your own households.

Can I also add that last night's opening ceremony, as imperfect as it was, was a people's opening ceremony and not a 'photoshopped one like Beijing. London used deaf kids, hospital staff and inpatients at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Beijing would not let a cute healthy (not deaf and definitely not dumb) girl sing bbecause her teeth were crooked. They didn't even try to fix her teeth, they got another girl to mime the pre-recorded song!!!

A word to the wise: Don't leave Nigeria if you don't have the necessary papers for whichever country you are emigrating to. What good is it to pay tax in another country and amass a reasonable amount of wealth and then be deported without being given the chance to take anything with you? What kind of life is it to live in fear and worry everyday? And lets not forget that you cant apply for proper jobs or invest in legal businesses because these will increase your chances of being caught. My opinion is that the worry and stress you will experience will be more than what you'll experience by staying in Nigeria.

I've been expecting this topic for a while and here it is...finally. I've got very slim hips but a average size bum( or so i think). It's difficult to find skirts and dresses that fit well and am usually to be found in trousers. I'm a woman and want to dress feminine but have to trade feminity against looking good (overall). I've researched into drugs, creams, surgery, exercise and decided that I'd try exercise and see if those work. I wont recommend drugs, or surgery because of the high risk. Drugs cause homonal imbalance and can increase the risk of cancer etc; surgery is high risk as well and involves insertion of artificial materials or fat transfer (unfortunately, I'm not fat so have nothing to transfer!!!)

Also try reducing the circumference of your waist as this makes your hips/bum look bigger. I've got a flat tum so usually cinch in my waist with belts - this works for me because there's no excess flesh to spill above or below the belts)

Finally, don't expect miracles. It'll take weeks or months unless you go for surgery. So please stick with any option you decide on. I started exercising 3 weeks ago and my bum is firmer and more lifted. I haven't noticed any increase in size but as I said before, it will take time.
