Don't forget number and fatality of road accidents and poor/ inadequate health care (type and availabiltiy of service, procedures and relevant drugs). I'd rather the government sorts out these problems before building new mega cities and planting trees! Don't get me wrong, these are nice things, but not more important than proper health service and safe roads- these are real problems that should be addressed cos they affect most, if not all, of the population.... This kept me quiet for sometime analyzing the outcome of the actions I might take. All actions led to physical contact but in anger I was like "to hell with it".
I met her later on and told her my mind and demanded an apology. It didn't go down well and as you might guess, there was a LOT of physical contact as I tried to get her to say sorry. I've told only half of the story....when school resumed, we had to write an essay which was 'a letter to your penpal' telling him/her what you did during the holidays...yeah, you're right! Most of the 'myths' we knew as kids were to instill ethics, and for health and safety reasons (don't catch cold, get pregnant, etc). Obviously, the older generation thought the best way to get kids to obey is to frighten them. However, some of them were just plain silly and were usually the result of childish conjecture by the younger ones.

Justwise, some people don't feel good about themselves until they put others down. It's mainly insecurity, prejudice and frustration. Unfortunately, cyberbullies have found their way here.

My comment wasn't about classes of fire (A,B...) but what you call them (domestic, industrial, etc). Nigeria does not have a proper aviation firefighting department so I do not expect you to know what that is. My cousin's husband works for a aviation fire service in australia and I'm sure that they (Australian's) would not call it so if aviation fire does not exist. There's a long list of procedures that must be taken to ensure a reasonable level of safety but these guys have done only one of the basics and are coming to boast about it? Ok so they've got rid of the really old ones but the remaing planes nko? Are they being maintained and serviced properly? Nigeria Airways flight 2120 crashed in 1991 killing all 261 people on board just because the tires were not properly inflated- so what guarantee are they giving us that the 'newer' planes will be 'accident free'?

Does this mean that they'd have continued using the old planes if last week's crash had not happened? I fear for Nija o!
These guys use the latest technology, drive the latest cars etc but expect others to make do with the most antiquated planes without any remorse or fear of the consequences. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, afterall this is the country where many rich people are completely blind to the needs and plights of the poor around them; a country where some will go to any lengths to become rich, even at the cost of human lives. This is really tragic. Lives have been lost and we can't even be comforted in the fact that a solution will be found so that their lives were not lost in vain. Haba, Nigeria where is the hope? I pray that this will mark a turning point for better and that people start insisting on transparency and accountability both from themselves and the people around them. Does anyone have evidence that the ATC gave the wrong advice .i.e there was a easier/ more assessible landing space for the plane? Would the control tower have given better responce? Please bear in mind that there are protocols for communication between pilots and airports so maybe someone can confirm that the 'reported' communication was not according to protocol or that a better one can be put in place. if we can identify a better way of doing things, hopefully these recommendations will reach the right people and will save lives in the future. May the victims' souls rest in peace!

PS: Everyone knows there's a high likelihood that the plane was not properly maintained but that is one issue; communication problem is another.

opribo: I thought pilots were heavily trained to handle any kind of air emergency situation. If both engines of an airplane fails simultaneously that certainly calls for a thorough look into the course because from my own naive understanding of airplane, the 2 engines cannot go bad at the same-time more so for the plane to have gotten to Lagos. I think the maneuverability of the plane for landing must have cracked up the engine because the plane was old and could not cope with the rigors of one more landing.

As you said, your comment is one of ignorance. Planes are machines and anything can go wrong, including dual engine failure. All you need is a series of events which on their own will not result in major problems but when combined will result in devastating consequences. Although very rare, dual engine failure can happen if the jet runs out of fuel, the pipes are blocked or the fuel pump is faulty. However, as Jakumo said, the plane can continue to fly (or glide) albeit at slower speed and lower altitude, depending on the glide ratio e.g for every mile of altitude, it can glide x amount of miles/km. The only thing a plane needs to fly is airspeed but without engines, speed is usually maintained at lower altitude so in this case, the plane will have descended to maintain speed and also to line up with the runway. The plane's glide ratio probably fell short of the runway and it's uunfortunate that there were tall buildings in the area because otherwise, the plane could have landed on a flat piece of land, probably the worst result is that the tires will snap, the plane skids and passangers are thrown around and will be badly bruised.

Why won't people be unhappy in marriage. All my friends are married and few of them are happy. In nigeria, people see marriage as a status symbol more or less the same as having a degree, house or car. But marriage is not like buying a car or choosing a career; you can move house or change your car/ career as often as you like, you can choose self employment and set up your own business but unfortunately, if your marriage does not work out, your life is changed forever. Even if you get divorced, you cannot completely move on because traces of your marriage remains, e.g. children, mutual friends, shared assets, etc.

100% agree. there's nothing as offputting as a guy who tries too hard. I find it funny when I deliberately say controversial or foolish things and the guy immediately agrees, I'm like WHAT!!! As for the DNA, it is never done for a pregnant woman, the baby must be delivered, and the result does not come immediately compare to a malaria test. If we advise they should carry out a DNA, whose gonna bear the cost of ante natal and other costs. My friend girls of nowadays after doing their rubbish with several guys, they won't know who ones the pregnancy, and now push it to an innocent rich and successful guy. Tunde you're quite right that there's too many insults flying around- unfortunately in Nigeria, you're guilty until proven innocent.
However, I have to point out that you are wrong that DNA tests are only postnatal. It is important that people know that there are lots of prenatal tests that can be carried out, maybe just not in nigeria; so if someone eles is in a similar situation and has access to these tests then you shouldn't give the impression that prenatal tests are impossible. My advise is this: If the guy is sure he's not guilty, let him find out if such tests are available nigeria and what the risks are and then decide how to proceed. If the pregnancy is in its early stages an ultrasound will show the baby's development and help determine the approximate time of conception. If she's 2 months along and he only gave her a lift 3 weeks ago, there's your proof.

There are prenatal DNA tests (CVS and amniocentesis) which can be carried out during pregnancies as early as the 10th week. Although the results are as accurate as post natal tests, the procedures involve some element of risk of miscarriage. A non-invasive prenatal DNA test is done by way of blood sample since a child's DNA enters the mother's blood through the walls of the placenta. I don't have details of cost but other people have hinted that it is very expensive. I also do not know if pre-natal tests are available in Nigeria but I should think so. Are we not the giant of africa?

I read somewhere that ultrasounds are also fairly accurate in showing the age of the embryo in the early stages of pregs; this might be useful if your friend remembers the day he gave her a lift.

New planes are expensive and airlines are not charities so expect to pay more if you want newer planes and this is no guarantee that the planes are accident free. I always say that planes are not like cars that you can park on a layby and call out the mechanic or recovery vehicle; if there's a problem, better pray that it is one that your pilot is skilled enough to handle and that your time on earth is not up.

Having said that, it is true that the average nija does not understand the importance of maintaining things. Proper regulation and policing of industries is practically non exisistent in nigeria( we would rather plant flowers and open new supermarkets!). Does anyone remember Nigeria airways flight 2120, in 1991, involving people returning from mecca? I'm sorry to bring this up but the accident occured when under-inflated tires burst and caught fire during take off. When the wheels were pulled up, the fire spread to the cargo hold and other parts of the plane. Tragically, on 2 separate occassions,attempts were made to inflate the tyres but each time it wasn't done because 'it would cause delays'... so next time your flight is delayed, don't harras the staff, instead pray that essential maintenance has been properly carried out.

If you've got time on your hands, check out Alsaska airline flight 261;reason for crash- inadequate maintenence leading to wear and tear and failure of the horizontal stabilizer control system. This is the airline that sold their planes to Dana. It is possible that the planes had existing faults which would have got worse over time and finally resulted in the Dana crash..., some faults don't immediately result in a crash (china airline flight 611- the crash happened 22 years after the poor maintenance was done)

Most plane crashes are avoidable and only occur because of poor maintenance.

I've been watching celebrations of Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee and one of the most striking things is the support given to her by Prince Phillip.
She's queen and so has more authority than he does (outside the home of course) and he has to walk 4-5 steps behind her when in public. He wasn't crowned king (I think parliament refused or something...can't remember the details) so is not her social equal. However, at home, I'm sure she's the wife and he get to wear the trousers. etc...So my question is, Nigerian men, what would you do if your wife was professionally or financially better off? centuries ago, when tribal wars were very much in existence, the victors would sell the captives as slaves and then take over the villages. The elites in society welcomed foreigners and were quite happy to give them what they want so long as they receive shinny toys in return. Their ill gotten wealth was used to terrorise and subdue others around them. This probably undermined the economy, political stability and social cohesion in africa while conversely enhancing development in other parts of the world where they had the time and wealth to experiment and innovate. They 'lived' while the slaves 'existed' and the pluundered societies struggled to recover from their loss.

Most of us do not recognise that slavery is still practised today. The elite in today's society syphon the country's resources and deposit/ spend them overseas where the money is used to develop those economies. They welcome foreigners into Nigeria and allow them liberties that nigerians can only dream off. Who cares? as long as they receive something that enables them to 'oppress' and 'outdo' those around them without realising that these people are only here to plunder. And the ordinary man on the street acts like foreigners are gods. Bowing and scrapping and kissing their feet...it's just disgusting to see. And to crown it all, we desperately want to be like them...bleach skin, eat, speak, dress like them, build houses like theirs, drive similar cars,brazillian hair, US designer clothes, italian shoes, chinese electronics and indian toothpicks. Everything must be made in the US, UK, Germany, even made in China is better than made in Nija ....HABA...let us start having some self worth and dignity otherwise foreigners will forever continue to take us for granted.

A preliminary independent inquiry into the Dana Air crash of Sunday June 3, 2012 reveals that Dana Air might have purchased an aircraft with a pre-existing safety issue and a troubling past safety record. The question therefore is whether the necessary due diligence was carried out on the aircraft in question prior to purchase and operation in Nigeria. Or whether the Nigerian aviation authorities were aware of this fact before allowing the said aircraft into service locally. Dana Air’s McDonnell Douglas - MD-83 - jet is part of a fleet that was sold off by Alaskan Airlines in 2008 as the company upgraded its existing fleet to include more fuel-efficient aircrafts.

However, prior to this deal Alaskan Airlines has had several incidents with some of its MD-83 aircrafts, at least one of such incidents resulted in a fatal air crash. The air crash occurred on January 31st 2000, when Alaskan Airlines 261, crashed into the Pacific Ocean killing two pilots, three cabin crewmembers, and 83 passengers... With regards to the specific Dana aircraft in question, which flew within the Nigerian airspace under registration number 5N-RAM, it was discovered that this aircraft was previously registered to Alaskan Airlines with FAA N-number N944AS. The Construction Number (CN) of the plane was 53019/1783.

Checks with the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) revealed that the ill-fated aircraft, which first flew in 1990, had a previous aircraft incident within US airspace. The incident occurred on the August 20th 2006 and is listed in NTSB records as incident LAX06IA301. On that day, the plane landed without incident, but while taxiing to parking, the cabin crew intimated their colleagues on the flight crew about an smelly smoke from an electrical spark , which had permeated the cabin area... Although the actual cause of Sunday’s air crash is yet to be determined, the question remains as to whether the problems of this aircraft were resolved satisfactorily and whether the eventual buyers of the plane (Dana Air) and the Nigerian Ministry of Aviation were aware of this fact and took necessary measures to ensure that the aircraft was safe enough to operate within Nigeria’s airspace.

While we wait for an official explanation, following the promised"a thorough investigation” from aviation authorities, we will take the necessary steps to conduct a more comprehensive independent investigation in the short-term lest this become another victim of a quickly forgotten tragedy.
