Humans were created from clay... which to me is compatible with "modern humans emerged from a more basic form".

From a purely agnostic point of view, the Bible describes creation and evolution in terms that were understandable to humans at the time. If the Bible were to be rewritten today, perhaps it would talk more about genes and microbiology (which are understandable to today's humans). If it had been written 100,000 years ago, I doubt we'd even see some of the relatively modern concepts like "manger" or "being a shepherd" since humans were not keeping animals at that time.
