At this point Old Glory, am thinkin' DC ![]() |
Akan Ubong ![]() As I stated in a prior thread, I am a blue-blooded conservative democrat. Maybe I should just say I am an independent. Basically, I am for max individual freedoms, but with a slight human touch. Even if I were a republican (which today, you can't really tell the difference as to me, both parties are all the same), it shouldn't be a problem as we need pple on both sides of the aisle. See, I like to see myself as the ordinary joe. I read a little here, a little there then I draw my own conclusions based on my independent reasoning. I am the kinda guy you go out drinking with (no beer though pls ) and end up spending 10 hours as the conversation is never boring.Howz that for size? LOL and u never answer the chocolate city question ![]() |
The ATL Shawtay, is goin' down ma neeg ![]() So, by chocolate city, r u in the "new" New Orleans? ![]() |
Alright guys, I am about to go for a meeting, so I will go ahead and answer the question. Hot-angel, this may be one for your much hated govt teacher ![]() The answer is false: The 15th amendment guarantees non-discrimination and not the right to vote. I quote (section 1): The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.Technically, no one has the right to vote in this country, but of course we all know who this was meant to protect ![]() Look at it this way: If blacks had a right to vote, would there have been a need for the Voters Rights Act (VRA) of 1965? In other words, if the point of the constitution and its amendments was to protect citizens from government, would there have been a need for the VRA nearly 100 years later in the first place? I hope I clarified the issue. By the way, key portions of the VRA are due to expire in August 2007. Send a message to your congress person to let them know that those provisions need to be extended, at the very least, for life. Expect another teaser tomorrow ![]() Thanks, |
Nah Old Glory, I always try to be like the sugar ant, aka "Nnuene akwa (nsuk udom, nsuk ufuut)" ![]() |
tru_mic, based on ur profile, it appears you are in the UK. This begs the question - y even bother posting here when the topic specifically mentions the US? What kind of scones did you have with your tea by the river thames today? LOL |
hot-angel, Yep, that is what I understand by that statement. Now, if only they will add major cities other than NYC like Atlanta, LA etc, it would be even better ![]() |
My bad hot-angel et al, I was referring to the US constitution plus its ammendments. So the question still stands. I will be taking answers for another 5 hours or so, so bring them on ![]() |
Following up on my "first president of the US" trivia question, here is another: The US constitution guarantees that people of color have the right to vote - True or False. Why? |
Their followers can all claim to sprout from the same root - Abraham |
smartsoft, I assume this is a comp, so eventually, you will convert this to actual code. If not true, then here's my 2 cents: 1) Convert nav tabs and text in contact us to text. Use CSS for rollovers. 2) Center text in contact us area 3) Change "a" to "the" in "at a click of a mouse" 4) In FireFox, login box is covering the "Register text" (I assume, u will be coding for both browsers). 5) In my opinion, no need for "home" in nav bar. If you/client insist, then move it to b4 "about us". Personally, I wouldn't have it, but rather convert the logo to a clickable image to go back to the home page (on pages other than the home page - you might want to think about using an include file for this, if not already). 6) No search function/footer/site map. That's it for now ![]() |
Again Afeni I agree with you 1000% I think at this point, we are splitting hairs here. I hereby yield the floor to others ![]() |
Mocha, Must be the west coast (wes-siiiiidee!! LOL) dubs that got your head over-heated. It was a joke man. Chill out and do the crip walk LOL In the end, we all learned something (hopefully). I will be posting similar questions from time to time. So watch out!! |
Exu u r right. In fact, facts (sorry about that) show that we are all Ibibio. It's politics that has resulted in the various dialects claiming to be actual languages/tribes. But I digress ![]() However, when it comes to the national interest, I am willing to set aside tribalism. The world is moving at rates faster than the speed of light courtesy of globalization. The sooner we drop all these internal squabbles, the sooner we hop on the train to wealth. In particular, I like what is being done with the Central Bank and with our national debt. It truly shows that regardless of where we are from, if we can just band together, we can go places. |
you said (and I am pretty sure I smoked the right crack this morning LOL): "wasnt he number 2?" You asked and I answered. So, yes he was number 2, but as defined by the constitution. zionchic, I will hv to think of something. Depending on where u r located, it may take a while ![]() |
Ibibio. Some argue that we were a part of Ibo. Some go as far as saying we were their slaves who later on rebelled. Far from it. We followed totally different migratory patterns from what some claim to be our starting point of Sudan. I've got the books. The one I read wasn't even written by a Nigerian. Of course I am sure you've got yours. So in the end, it boils down to whose is right. I would probably take that written by an independent person any day. Then again, what do I know? ![]() |
Very good zionchic ![]() George Washington was the first constitutionally elected president but definitely not the first president: http://www.marshallhall.org/hanson.html Even George Washington voted for Hanson ![]() Mocha, by that definition, John Adams wasn't even #2 either. Sorry ![]() Kudos!! |
Anyone care to take a swipe at this one? The answer is not as easy as you may think ![]() |
Technically, all the smaller groups are either Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa that failed to fully naturalize into their destiny.I don't think so. No offense, but a short trip down history lane would definitely dispell this one man ![]() |
I think the problem with our clear majority (and yes, I will be going there) is that they contribute nothing to the coffers of the nation, yet seek maximum benefit from it. Not to mention, especially after the civil war, that certain majority has felt that the presidency was their birthright. Also, in order to prevent another Biafra, they concentrate certain strategic resources in their region. So the others who seek equitable sharing of the national cake and get none, get agitated. Yet cos they are too small and not united, they can't come up with a united candidate to stick it to "the man". Result, the certain united majority keep on ruling. For the very same reasons, we couldn't even come up with a lingua franca some years ago. Coming to think of it, perhaps what would really work would be a revolving presidency, changing hands every 2 yrs or so. It worked in the early days of America prior to the constitution (anyone who tells me the first president of America, I go give am $20 ) and am sure it could work in our case. Of course, the question arises, who would go first? Simple - flip a coin, agree mutually, whatever. It can be done. |
ah Afeni, You forget - who will be part of these 3 regions? Will the smaller tribes want to be a part of it? Very complex indeed. Even if we had 250 regions, I can guarantee that someone in some village will find a reason to say he is being marginalized. Finally but unfortunately, cos of oil, such divisions wouldn't be attainable, and it cd b Biafra all over again. |
Afeni, I agree with you 100%. In fact I brought up something similar on another thread, but I didn't wanna bring it up here as I thought it would be off-topic ![]() On this thread, I decided to act as if there are no internal problems. In other words, I wanted to say what pple wanted to hear. Saying what I would really want to say: There should be no president of Nigeria cos Nigeria isn't a nation. A nation is a group of pple tied together by similar culture. Other than 419 and a few others, we aren't tied together by anything. We should go back to the way we were b4 - individual independent tribes (of course that won't happen).Yes, oyibo is responsible for the squabbles we are experiencing now. As someone once said, divided we fall, united we stand. Indeed, if the whole of Africa were united, oyibo no for get chance at allllll. Better for you Afeni? ![]() |
Where the person is from shdnt matter. What shd matter is that the person has Nigeria's (as opposed to his/her's) interest at heart. In my opinion, it is only when we c ourselves as Nigerians and not wa or zo or bia that Nigeria will be the country it once was and is destined to be. As always, my 2 cents |
hot, The only thing that comes to mind is you hooking up with someone you know overseas. Be it via paypal or credit card, you could then channel the payments through that person's account. Other than that, I am afraid you are limited to Int'l money order or Cash On Delivery, something some pple may not be willing to do as most including myself would find it an inconvenience. At least I tried ![]() |
I am sure it cd b argued either way, but this article sums it up nicely. I cdnt have said it better myself ![]() Basically dreamweaver vs frontpage is like wheat and chaff. Thatz my 2 cents anyway: http://www.pointafter.com/Archives/nl0202.htm Enjoy!! |
I believe he is playing for a greek club, olympiacos - http://www.uefa.com/footballEurope/Club=2610/domestic.html (scroll down to c him in the photo gallery). A quick google search should help out with this though ![]() At the time he moved, I believe he said he wanted a team where he could play in the first team and that had a chance to go for the one thing he doesn't have - champions league title. Am sure money had a part in it - He always wanted more money and few clubs were willing to part with it for him. Of course, that took him to greece, which in my opinion has virtually killed his international career. I hope this helps, |
This was just sent to me by a friend: http://www.africanheritagecity.com/ I don't think it is ready yet, but it is good to know. We don dey go far o! ![]() |
I hv been on various bridges in the lagos area and was naturally scared when I first witnessed the vibrations. I didn't think much of it until I noticed bridges/overpasses vibrating in the US. So naturally, I did a little reading. It turns out bridges (Engineers, sorry for boring you ) are built with expansion and contraction in mind. So, spaces are put b/w slabs (or whatever you call them) and supported by springs. That way, when it expands/contracts due to weather, the spaces are "filled" so to speak.Having said that, Nigeria is not known for its maintenance culture. There are roads I have been on there that were built before I was born and based on my last visit, look like they haven't been touched since. In the states, it is common to see the department of transportation decide to "maintain" a road that looks totally brand new, at least from my point of view as a nigerian. It would be nice to know when the bridge was built, and how many cars it was built for, just to mention a few. as always, my 2 cents |
I haven't been to naija in 2 years (man, I am in need of another visit, but I digress ) but from when I was there, I don't think there is anything to do there with kids in mind per se.There are places you can go to with your family - as Seun said - Olumo Rock, beaches, museums, Obudu cattle ranch, etc. What I would do is ask a family friend or relative over there for some tips. Depending on who u ask, they are usually very up-2-date. I hope ths helps |
from what i have read, such devices do emit low levels of radiation, low enough as is claimed, not to harm you in anyway. As with all things oyibo as I always say, I would take that with a grain of salt: - They never seem to mention what happens when you accumulate such low doses over time - The organizations that usually conduct the research are usually funded by the very same phone companies, which implies, at least to me, conflict of interest. I don't know how u would feel rays though. Bottomline, you will die of something - be it bluetooth rays, air pollution (smog as a result of cars etc), second-hand smoke, preservatives in processed food, etc. As I say, just utilize modern gadgetry in moderation. As a wise man once told me, "he who eats oyibo food, will get oyibo disease" - and he didn't even go to school ![]() I hope this helps |
There was a time, at least in the atlanta - USA area, that even mentioning frontpage on ur cv/resume wouldn't not even get you an interview ![]() I personally prefer neither. I want something that gives me *total* control - doesn't add fluff that I may not need, takes a long time to load up cos of all the widgets, some of which you may not even use. That means "down and dirty" notepad or Macromedia homesite. Yeah, I know, I am old school, but hey, it works for me ![]() If I had a gun to my head though, I would go for dreamweaver. What I like in particular is the preview which lets you click on a part of a page you are working on and it automatically takes you to the line of code in the source file. |
